    Butterfly and caterpillar तितली / बटरफ्लाई और केटरपिलर

    Butterflies breed on leaves. Various words for butterfly can be traced to the Sanskrit word PATRA.PRAJI that means leaf-bred! However, the etymologists trace the origin of the word butterfly in a belief that witches in disguise of butterfly steal butter!

We often travel in the time machine and meet our prehistoric ancestors. We witness the origin and evolution of words. We come back and consult the dictionaries to compare the written words with our personal experiences. However, each time, someone tells us thatour so-called personal experiences are nothing but flights of fancy. We are advised not to fly. We are advised instead to consult the dictionaries and etymologies. Weaccept the advice today. Before starting on todays' time-travel we shall consult the written words.

No one knows about the origin of the word Hindi word TITALI (butterfly). However, many scholars know about the etymology of the English word butterfly. As in case of other words, the experts have flown quite a few fancy butterflies in search of its etymology. According to the etymology dictionary Etymonline, it is believed that witches disguised as butterflies come to steal butter. Hence the name buttorfleoge in ancient English that got corrupted to butterfly. Another possibility is that the butterfly is called so because both the butter and the butterfly are yellow! It is also proposed that the Dutch word boterschijte that means butterfly excreta is the origin of the English word butterfly since boterschijte is also yellow! And what about caterpillar? The Etymonline says that word caterpillar comes from French word chatepelose which literally means hairy cat! I know that, like me, you do not believe in the 'accepted' etymologies of butterfly and caterpillar.

Never mind. Let's travel again in our time machine, to a time and place where our ancestors are curious about butterflies and caterpillars to coin new words for them.

    "Wow. So many JYOTIN !"
Jibha and Bhashi are running after butterflies.
There were no lamps or torches in sight. I asked, "Where are theJYOTIN?"
"Look at these. The JYOTIN areflying."

I said, 'Good. Very good. Like name, like property. Sanskrit word jyoti means light. Therefore jyotin would mean bright. Butterflies arebright indeed. But you may call any brightly colored thing as jyotin or dyotin. You must give a specific name for this flying light."
Jibha and Bhashi thought for a moment before beginning their game of coining new words ...

    jyoti (Light, bright in Sanskrit) ज्योति (संस्कृत में प्रकाशवान)
    jyotin ज्योतिन
    dyotin (shining, brilliant in Sanskrit) द्योतिन (संस्कृत में चमकीला)
    tyotin त्योतिन
    tyotil त्योतिल
    tyitil त्यितील
    tytali त्यतली
titali (Hindi word for butterfly) तितली (हिन्दी)

    Dyotin (shining, brilliant in Sanskrit) द्योतिन (संस्कृत में चमकीला)
    tyotin त्योतिन
    tyotil त्योतिल
    tyotir त्योतिर
    t'it'eṙ (Armenian word for butterfly) त्यतेर t'it'eṙ (आर्मेनिअन में तितली)

Jibha and Bhashi have plucked a twig full of caterpillars. Some butterflies are also trapped in the twig. Both proceed to their cave. I ask them: 'What is it?'
    Bhashi replies: "Our Projects."
    "What? A project!"
"Yes. Ma and Pa do not answer our questions. We ask them that a doe gives birth to calves, a hen gives eggs from which chick hatches, but how is the butterfly born? Mother scolded and sent us away. Pa went out for hunting, and now mother has also gone out to collect tubers, roots and fruits. We will find it out ourselves about the birth of butterflies"
    "How?"
"Look at this twig. Each leaf is infested with 'parNa.katri' (Sanskrit words parNa (leaf) and katri (cutter)."
    I heard Jibha using a Sanskrit word for caterpillar 'parNa.katri.' But this word 'parNa.katri' is not found in any Sanskrit dictionary. Is 'parNa.katri' a lost Sanskrit word for caterpillar? My mind began playing the Jibha-Bhashi game:

    katirpelar > catyrpel (Mid. English) कतिरपेलर > कतिरपेल (मध्य युगीन अँग्रेजी)
    katarpilar कतरपिलर
    Caterpillar (English) कटरपिल्लर (अंग्रेज़ी)
Bhashi shook me by hand. "Where are you? Lost?"
"I ..well I was trying to find the hairy cat of the dictionaries in in the caterpillars. But all I got was a leaf eater." I whispered.
Bhashi was not interested in what I said. She continued, "we have observed that each morning the butterflies fly from the twigs infested with caterpillars. We think that the butterflies are born on leaves. We are carrying this twig full of caterpillars to our cave. If our theory is right, butterflies will be born on these leaves in our cave."
I am fascinated at the talent of the stone age child scientists. I ask them, "Will you give another name to butterfly if it is really born on leaves?
"Yes. We have decided about it. If it is born (praj in Skt.) on parna (Skt. Leaf) or patra (Skt leaf) it should be called patra.praji or parna.praji (Sanskrit). Bhashi said.
Jibha aded, "we may also call it patraja (born from leaf)"
    Jibha and Bhashi continued to play with words….

    I was a little perplexed that none of the Sanskrit dictionaries has recorded the words patrapraji, parnaparaji or patraja for butterfly. But their modified versions are present in European, Afro-Asian and American languages. Have the original Sanskrit words become extinct? Soon I got the answer to my question in the next game played by Jibha and Bhashi. Indian languages have indeed conserved the modified version of the word prajapatri!

Jiba and Bhashi have continued to play with the words in the same manner. Words have been mutating in the manner of the DNA of living beings. New words and new organism continue to evolve. जीभा और भाषी शब्दों से इसी तरह खेलते रहे। शब्दों में भी जीवों के डीएनए की तरह ही म्यूटेशन (mutation) होते गए। नए शब्द और नए जीव बार-बार जन्म लेते गए।

How do you find this word game of Jibha and Bhashi? आपको जीभा और भाषी का यह खेल कैसालग रहा है?
