  • 5 easy ways to take care of oily skin this summer!

Sobiya N. Moghul, Health Me Up

The summer brings hot and sunny days, making everyone's skin more oily and greasy. But this summer, you can avoid getting weather-related side effects on your skin.

HMU expert and dermatologist Dr. Kiran Lohia, MD gives us 5 easy ways to manage your oily skin this summer.
    Avoid the sun!
Being out in the sun will only make you sweatier, while also exposing you to the harmful effects of UV rays. Additionally, the sun can cause a paradoxical increase in oil secretion, making your skin even greasier! During the hours of 10AM - 3PM, the sun is at its strongest, emitting almost unbearable light and heat. So avoid the sun particularly during this time. Also, try to cover your head and wear sunglasses. Finally, always remember your sunblock, and look for at least SPF30++ for the best sunscreen effect!

    Look for salicylic acid!
Salicylic Acid is a great naturally derived active that works by exfoliating the oil producing glands and the follicles. It also reduces the amount of oil secreted by the skin! Using this ingredient will help prevent and treat oily skin, blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and even prickly heat! So, look for a face wash and a cream with this miracle active for clearer and less oily skin! Also, a body wash with Salicylic Acid and Triclosan will help ensure that your body breakouts disappear!
    Don't over wash!
Although we feel sweatier during the hot weather, it is not healthy to shower or wash your face more than twice a day. When you over wash, your skin loses much needed moisture, making it believe that it should produce more oil to give it back its hydration. So, in actuality, you end up getting more oil production over time instead of less! If you really feel sweaty and just need to take an extra shower, then use only cold water without the body wash for no more than 5 minutes. The same goes for washing your face!

    Change your routine!
In the winters we tend to add extra products to give back moisture to our skin such as cold creams and serums. Stop those extra products and use light moisturizing lotions or gels instead. You will feel more refreshed and your skin will be less oily as well! Also, make sure your products are certified as Non-Comedogenic and Oil-Free to help prevent your pores from getting clogged!

    Reduce the makeup!
While it may feel like you can't live without your foundation, in the summer weather, its best to go without. Foundation will only get runny in the hot and sunny outside conditions, resulting in it thinning and running down your face. Also, extra products on an already sweaty face can only serve to increase the clogged pores, making your skin more pimple-prone. Instead, stick to powders, tinted moisturizers or just plain concealer. Your skin will thank you at the end of the summer when your skin is clear and glowing!
