    Baala Kaanda - Sarga 9
    This Sarga starts with the story of Ṛṡyaṡṛṅga, the first of the many sub-stories that fill Bāla Kāṇḍa.

    What do children like? Among many other things, they like to hear stories. So, it is only appropriate to have Bāla Kāṇḍa filled with stories. Isn't it?

    Throughout Bāla Kāṇḍa, we will read many stories which may or may not be directly related to the main story of Rāmāyaṇa. But they are the stories Rāma heard growing up.
    1.9.1
    ஏதச்ச்ருத்வா ரஹ: ஸூதோ ராஜாநமிதமப்ரவீத் ।
    ருத்விக்பிருபதிஷ்டோऽயம் புராவ்ருத்தோ மயா ஸ்ருத: ॥
    ētacchrutvā rahaḥ sūtō rājānamidamabravīt ।
    ṛtvigbhirupadiṣṭō'yaṃ purāvṛttō mayā ṡrutaḥ ॥
    Hearing what had been said, the charioteer (Sumantra)
    told the king in private:
    “There is an ancient legend, which I
    have also heard from the Ṛtviks”

    1.9.2
    ஸநத்குமாரோ பகவாந் பூர்வம் கதிதவாந் கதாம் ।
    ருஷீணாம் ஸந்நிதௌ ராஜந் தவ புத்ராகமம் ப்ரதி ॥
    sanatkumārō bhagavān pūrvaṃ kathitavān kathām ।
    ṛṣīṇāṃ sannidhau rājan tava putrāgamaṃ prati ॥
    Bhagawan Sanat Kumara, had foretold to the Ṛshis
    about the offspring that you would be getting in future.
    1.9.3
    கஸ்யபஸ்ய து புத்ரோऽஸ்தி விபண்டக இதி ஸ்ருத: ।
    ருஸ்யஸ்ருங்க இதி க்யாதஸ்தஸ்ய புத்ரோ பவிஷ்யதி ॥
    kaṡyapasya tu putrō'sti vibhaṇḍaka iti ṡrutaḥ ।
    ṛṡyaṡṛṅga iti khyātastasya putrō bhaviṣyati ॥
    Kāṡyapa has a son by name Vibhanḍaka, who is well known.
    He is going to have a son by name Ṛṡyaṡṛṅga,
    who will be well-known on his own right.
    1.9.4
    ஸ வநே நித்யஸம்வ்ருத்தோ முநிர்வநசர: ஸதா ।
    நாந்யம் ஜாநாதி விப்ரேந்த்ரோ நித்யம் பித்ரநுவர்தநாத் ॥
    sa vanē nityasaṃvṛddhō munirvanacaraḥ sadā ।
    nānyaṃ jānāti viprēndrō nityaṃ pitranuvartanāt ॥
    That Muni and one of the best Brāhmaṇas
    would live in the Vana along with his father
    and would not happen to come in contact with any one else.
    1.9.5
    த்வைவித்யம் ப்ரஹ்மசர்யஸ்ய பவிஷ்யதி மஹாத்மந: ।
    லோகேஷு ப்ரதிதம் ராஜந் விப்ரைஸ்ச கதிதம் ஸதா ॥
    dvaividhyaṃ brahmacaryasya bhaviṣyati mahātmanaḥ ।
    lōkēṣu prathitaṃ rājan vipraiṡca kathitaṃ sadā ॥
    He would be losing his innocence and serene celibacy
    that is praised by many Brāhmaṇas
    and noted by everyone in the world.

    The phrases like 'known by everyone in the world', obviously should not be taken literally. It is the poetic 'everyone', meaning 'everyone indicated by the context'.



    1.9.6
    தஸ்யைவம் வர்தமாநஸ்ய கால: ஸமபிவர்தத ।
    அக்நிம் ஸுஸ்ரூஷமாணஸ்ய பிதரம் ச யஸஸ்விநம் ॥
    tasyaivaṃ vartamānasya kālaḥ samabhivartata ।
    agniṃ ṡuṡrūṣamāṇasya pitaraṃ ca yaṡasvinam ॥
    He would be celibate for long time
    spending time serving his renowned father
    and performing fire rituals.
    1.9.7
    ஏதஸ்மிந்நேவ காலே து ரோமபாத: ப்ரதாபவாந் ।
    அங்கேஷு ப்ரதிதோ ராஜா பவிஷ்யதி மஹாபல: ॥
    ētasminnēva kālē tu rōmapādaḥ pratāpavān ।
    aṅgēṣu prathitō rājā bhaviṣyati mahābalaḥ ॥
    There would be, at the same time, a valorous and strong king
    by name Rōmapāda, ruling the land of Aṅga.
    1.9.8
    தஸ்ய வ்யதிக்ரமாத்ராஜ்ஞோ பவிஷ்யதி ஸுதாருணா ।
    அநாவ்ருஷ்டிஸ்ஸுகோரா வை ஸர்வபூதபயாவஹா ॥
    tasya vyatikramādrājńō bhaviṣyati sudāruṇā ।
    anāvṛṣṭissughōrā vai sarvabhūtabhayāvahā ॥
    It would happen that he transgresses the boundaries of Dharma
    and his kingdom would experience dreadful and devastating famine
    that grips every being in fear and despair.
    1.9.9
    அநாவ்ருஷ்ட்யாம் து வ்ருத்தாயாம் ராஜா து:கஸமந்வித: ।
    ப்ராஹ்மணாந் ஸ்ருதவ்ருத்தாம்ஸ்ச ஸமாநீய ப்ரவக்ஷ்யதி ॥
    anāvṛṣṭyāṃ tu vṛttāyāṃ rājā duḥkhasamanvitaḥ ।
    brāhmaṇān ṡrutavṛddhāṃṡca samānīya pravakṣyati ॥
    The famine would make the king worried
    and he would request the presence of
    Brāhmaṇas, who are experts in Vēdas, and would ask:
    1.9.10
    பவந்த: ஸ்ருததர்மாணோ லோகசாரித்ரவேதிந: ।
    ஸமாதிஸந்து நியமம் ப்ராயஸ்சித்தம் யதா பவேத் ॥
    bhavantaḥ ṡrutadharmāṇō lōkacāritravēdinaḥ ।
    samādiṡantu niyamaṃ prāyaṡcittaṃ yathā bhavēt ॥
    "You are aware of many Dharmas and about the ways of the world.
    Please tell me if there is any remedial measure for this (famine)."
    1.9.11
    வக்ஷ்யந்தி தே மஹீபாலம் ப்ராஹ்மணா வேதபாரகா: ।
    விபண்டகஸுதம் ராஜந் ஸர்வோபாயைரிஹாநய ॥
    vakṣyanti tē mahīpālaṃ brāhmaṇā vēdapāragāḥ ।
    vibhaṇḍakasutaṃ rājan sarvōpāyairihānaya ॥
    The Brāhmaṇas, experts in Vēdas, would advice the King,
    "Please bring the son of Vibhanḍaka here by some means."
    1.9.12
    ஆநாய்ய ச மஹீபால ருஸ்யஸ்ருங்கம் ஸுஸத்க்ருதம் ।
    ப்ரயச்ச கந்யாம் ஸாந்தாம் வை விதிநா ஸுஸமாஹித: ॥
    ānāyya ca mahīpāla ṛṡyaṡṛṅgaṃ susatkṛtam ।
    prayaccha kanyāṃ ṡāntāṃ vai vidhinā susamāhitaḥ ॥
    "After giving him due respects, and with full trust,
    give your daughter, Ṡānta, to him in marriage
    in a customary manner."
    1.9.13
    தேஷாம் து வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ராஜா சிந்தாம் ப்ரபத்ஸ்யதே ।
    கேநோபாயேந வை ஸக்யமிஹாநேதும் ஸ வீர்யவாந் ॥
    tēṣāṃ tu vacanaṃ ṡrutvā rājā cintāṃ prapatsyatē ।
    kēnōpāyēna vai ṡakyamihānētuṃ sa vīryavān ॥
    Upon hearing those words, the king would think
    about the means to bring that great person to his kingdom.
    1.9.14
    ததோ ராஜா விநிஸ்சித்ய ஸஹ மந்த்ரிபிராத்மவாந் ।
    புரோஹிதமமாத்யாம்ஸ்ச தத: ப்ரேஷ்யதி ஸத்க்ருதாந் ॥
    tatō rājā viniṡcitya saha mantribhirātmavān ।
    purōhitamamātyāṃṡca tataḥ prēṣyati satkṛtān ॥
    After consulting with his ministers, the king would
    ask the Purōhitas and the ministers to do accordingly.
    1.9.15
    தே து ராஜ்ஞோ வச: ஸ்ருத்வா வ்யதிதா விநதாநநா: ।
    ந கச்சேம ருஷேர்பீதா அநுநேஷ்யந்தி தம் ந்ருபம் ॥
    tē tu rājńō vacaḥ ṡrutvā vyathitā vinatānanāḥ ।
    na gacchēma ṛṣērbhītā anunēṣyanti taṃ nṛpam ॥
    They, being apprehensive and fearful of approaching Vibhanḍaka
    would beg their inability to carry on the task.
    1.9.16
    வக்ஷ்யந்தி சிந்தயித்வா தே தஸ்யோபாயாம்ஸ்ச தத்க்ஷமாந் ।
    ஆநேஷ்யாமோ வயம் விப்ரம் ந ச தோஷோ பவிஷ்யதி ॥
    vakṣyanti cintayitvā tē tasyōpāyāṃṡca tatkṣamān ।
    ānēṣyāmō vayaṃ vipraṃ na ca dōṣō bhaviṣyati ॥
    Then, they would think through it and tell the king
    that they would bring the Brāhmaṇa, without any problem.
    1.9.17
    ஏவமங்காதிபேநைவ கணிகாபிர்ருஷே: ஸுத: ।
    ஆநீதோऽவர்ஷயத்தேவ: ஸாந்தா சாஸ்மை ப்ரதீயதே ॥
    ēvamaṅgādhipēnaiva gaṇikābhirṛṣēḥ sutaḥ ।
    ānītō'varṣayaddēvaḥ ṡāntā cāsmai pradīyatē ॥
    With the help of courtesans, the king of the land of Aṅga
    will succeed in bringing the son of the Ṛshi.
    Ṡānta would be given to him in marriage,
    and the god of rain would send showers.
    1.9.18
    ருஸ்யஸ்ருங்கஸ்து ஜாமாதா புத்ராந் தவ விதாஸ்யதி ।
    ஸநத்குமாரகதிதமேதாவத்வ்யாஹ்ருதம் மயா ॥
    ṛṡyaṡṛṅgastu jāmātā putrān tava vidhāsyati ।
    sanatkumārakathitamētāvadvyāhṛtaṃ mayā ॥
    Ṛṡyaṡṛṅga, that son-in-law,
    will help you with having sons.
    So I heard as told by Sanat Kumara.
    1.9.19
    அத ஹ்ருஷ்டோ தஸரத: ஸுமந்த்ரம் ப்ரத்யபாஷத ।
    யதர்ஸ்யஸ்ருங்கஸ்த்வாநீதோ விஸ்தரேண த்வயோச்யதாம் ॥
    atha hṛṣṭō daṡarathaḥ sumantraṃ pratyabhāṣata ।
    yatharṡyaṡṛṅgastvānītō vistarēṇa tvayōcyatām ॥
    King Daṡaratha, felt very happy hearing what Sumantra said,
    and asked him to expand on the details of
    how Ṛṡyaṡṛṅga was brought (to the kingdom of Aṅga).

    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே நவம: ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē navamaḥ sargaḥ ॥
    Thus concludes the ninth Sarga
    in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.

    We completed reading 328 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
