I am giving the answers from my experience not yet found any authentication.
Generally we know that Mahalaya Paksham is meant of Pitrus as Visesha punya Kaalam to worship them by doing Tarpanam or shradhham etc. Out of this Paksham 16days - More important Punya Kaalams are defined with some title and for a special reason.
Maha Bharani, Madhyashtami, Gaja chaya are most important punya kaalams than other days out of this pitru paksham.
In addition few important days are given for pitrus of special gategories.
Hint : Doing Mahalayam Tarpanam on the above Punyakalam is many times better than doing on one's father's thithi.
1. Avithava Navami is preferable for Sumangalies
2. Sanyastha Mahalayam is Visesham for Sanyasis
3. Maha vyadhipadham is also an important punyakalam because Vydhipadham is taken as a punyakaalam of every month and instructed to do tarpanam on it evry month under shannavathi shradhdham. While it takes place on the pitru paksham it gets more importance.
