3.25.20 அஸங்க்யேயாஸ்து ராமஸ்ய
ஸாயகாஸ்சாபமண்டலாத் ।
விநிஷ்பேதுரதீவோக்ரா
ரக்ஷ:ப்ராணாபஹாரிண: ॥
asaṅkhyēyāstu rāmasya
sāyakāṡcāpamaṇḍalāt ।
viniṣpēturatīvōgrā
rakṣaḥprāṇāpahāriṇaḥ ॥
Innumerable were the extremely terrible arrows
that emerged from the Rāma's
bow that was bent into a semi-circle,
taking the lives of the Rākshasas.
3.25.21-22a தைர்தநூம்ஷி த்வஜாக்ராணி
வர்மாணி ச ஸிராம்ஸி ச ।
பாஹூந்ஸஹஸ்தாபரணாந்
ஊரூந்கரிகரோபமாந் ।
சிச்சேத ராமஸ்ஸமரே
ஸதஸோऽத ஸஹஸ்ரஸ: ॥
tairdhanūṃṣi dhvajāgrāṇi
varmāṇi ca ṡirāṃsi ca ।
bāhūnsahastābharaṇān
ūrūnkarikarōpamān ।
cicchēda rāmassamarē
ṡataṡō'tha sahasraṡaḥ ॥
With those arrows, Rāma, in that fight,
cut off, by the hundreds and thousands,
bows, the tops of pennants, armor,
heads, arms decorated with ornaments,
and thighs that resembled the trunk of an elephant.
3.25.22b-23 ஹயாந்காஞ்சநஸந்நாஹாந்
ரதயுக்தாந்ஸஸாரதீந் ।
கஜாம்ஸ்ச ஸகஜாரோஹாந்
ஸஹயாந்ஸாதிநஸ்ததா ।
பதாதீந்ஸமரே ஹத்வா
ஹ்யநயத்யமஸாதநம் ॥
hayānkāńcanasannāhān
rathayuktānsasārathīn ।
gajāṃṡca sagajārōhān
sahayānsādinastathā ।
padātīnsamarē hatvā
hyanayadyamasādanam ॥
He sent away to the abode of Death
horses with gold trappings yoked to chariots
along with the charioteers,
elephants and the elephant-riders,
horses and the horse-riders
and also the foot-soldiers.
3.25.24 ததோ நாலீகநாராசை:
தீக்ஷ்ணாக்ரைஸ்ச விகர்ணிபி: ।
பீமமார்தஸ்வரம் சக்ரு:
பித்யமாநா நிஸாசரா: ॥
tatō nālīkanārācaiḥ
tīkṣṇāgraiṡca vikarṇibhiḥ ।
bhīmamārtasvaraṃ cakruḥ
bhidhyamānā niṡācarāḥ ॥
Shot by pipe-shaft arrows,
iron-shaft arrows, and twisted-head arrows,
the night-rovers let deafening wails in agony.

3.25.25 தத்ஸைந்யம் நிஸிதைர்பாணை:
அர்திதம் மர்மபேதிபி: ।
ராமேண ந ஸுகம் லேபே
ஸுஷ்கம் வநமிவாக்நிநா ॥
tatsainyaṃ niṡitairbāṇaiḥ
arditaṃ marmabhēdibhiḥ ।
rāmēṇa na sukhaṃ lēbhē
ṡuṣkaṃ vanamivāgninā ॥
That army, harrowed by Rama’s sharp arrows
that pierced their vitals, could find no respite,
like a dry patch of woods that caught fire would not.
3.25.26 கேசித்பீமபலாஸ்ஸூரா:
ஸூலாந்கங்காந்பரஸ்வதாந் ।
ராமஸ்யாபிமுகம் கத்வா
சிக்ஷிபு: பரமாயுதாந் ॥
kēcidbhīmabalāṡṡūrāḥ
ṡūlānkhaṅgānparaṡvadhān ।
rāmasyābhimukhaṃ gatvā
cikṣipuḥ paramāyudhān ॥
Only a few mighty strong warriors
went towards Rāma and threw
the best of their weapons,
the spears, the swords and the Paraṡus.
3.25.27 தேஷாம் பாணைர்மஹாபாஹு:
ஸஸ்த்ராண்யாவார்ய ராகவ: ।
ஜஹார ஸமரே ப்ராணாந்
சிச்சேத ச ஸிரோதராந் ॥
tēṣām bāṇairmahābāhuḥ
ṡastrāṇyāvārya rāghavaḥ ।
jahāra samarē prāṇān
cicchēda ca ṡirōdharān ॥
Rāghava of the mighty arm warded off
their weapons with his arrows, in that fight,
and slew them by severing their necks.
3.25.28 தே சிந்நஸிரஸ: பேது:
சிந்நவர்மஸராஸநா: ।
ஸுபர்ணவாதவிக்ஷிப்தா
ஜகத்யாம் பாதபா யதா ॥
tē chinnaṡirasaḥ pētuḥ
chinnavarmaṡarāsanāḥ ।
suparṇavātavikṣiptā
jagatyāṃ pādapā yathā ॥
They tumbled to the ground,
with their heads, armors and bows cut off,
like trees uprooted by the
gush of wind from the wings of Suparṇa.
Suparṇa is another name for Garuda.
3.25.29 அவஸிஷ்டாஸ்ச யே தத்ர
விஷண்ணாஸ்ச நிஸாசரா: ।
கரமேவாப்யதாவந்த
ஸரணார்தம் ஸரார்திதா: ॥
avaṡiṣṭāṡca yē tatra
viṣaṇṇāṡca niṡācarāḥ ।
kharamēvābhyadhāvanta
ṡaraṇārthaṃ ṡarārditāḥ ॥
The night-rovers that were left there
ran in despair to Khara seeking refuge,
harrowed by the arrows.
3.25.30 தாந்ஸர்வாந்புநராதாய
ஸமாஸ்வாஸ்ய ச தூஷண: ।
அப்யதாவத காகுத்ஸ்தம்
க்ருத்தோ ருத்ரமிவாந்தக: ॥
tānsarvānpunarādāya
samāṡvāsya ca dūṣaṇaḥ ।
abhyadhāvata kākutsthaṃ
kruddhō rudramivāntakaḥ ॥
Dūshaṇa consoled them and rallying them again,
dashed towards Kakutstha in great anger
like the god of death towards Rudra.
3.25.31 நிவ்ருத்தாஸ்து புநஸ்ஸர்வே
தூஷணாஸ்ரயநிர்பயா: ।
ராமமேவாப்யதாவந்த
ஸாலதாலஸிலாயுதா: ॥
nivṛttāstu punassarvē
dūṣaṇāṡrayanirbhayāḥ ।
rāmamēvābhyadhāvanta
sālatālaṡilāyudhāḥ ॥
All of them, finding leadership in Dūshaṇa
turned back and dashed towards Rāma
armed with pine trees, palm trees and boulders.
3.25.32-33a ஸூலமுத்கரஹஸ்தாஸ்ச
சாபஹஸ்தா மஹாபலா: ।
ஸ்ருஜந்தஸ்ஸரவர்ஷாணி
ஸஸ்த்ரவர்ஷாணி ஸம்யுகே ॥
த்ருமவர்ஷாணி முஞ்சந்த:
ஸிலாவர்ஷாணி ராக்ஷஸா: ॥
ṡūlamudgarahastāṡca
cāpahastā mahābalāḥ ।
sṛjantaṡṡaravarṣāṇi
ṡastravarṣāṇi saṃyugē ॥
drumavarṣāṇi muńcantaḥ
ṡilāvarṣāṇi rākṣasāḥ ॥
The Rākshasas, wielding spears, Mudgaras and bows
fought, raining showers of arrows,
Ṡastras, trees and boulders.
3.25.33b-34a தத்பபூவாத்புதம் யுத்தம்
துமுலம் ரோமஹர்ஷணம் ।
ராமஸ்ய ச மஹாகோரம்
புநஸ்தேஷாம் ச ரக்ஷஸாம் ॥
tadbabhūvādbhutaṃ yuddhaṃ
tumulaṃ rōmaharṣaṇam ।
rāmasya ca mahāghōraṃ
punastēṣāṃ ca rakṣasām ॥
And then the fight between Rāma and Rākshasas
became chaotic and terribly gruesome,
raising one's hair on its end
and holding one in amazement.
3.25.34b-36 தே ஸமந்தாததிக்ருத்தா
ராகவம் புநரப்யயு: ।
தைஸ்ச ஸர்வா திஸோ த்ருஷ்ட்வா
ப்ரதிஸஸ்ச ஸமாவ்ருதா: ।
ராக்ஷஸைருத்யதப்ராஸை:
ஸரவர்ஷாபிவர்ஷிபி: ।
ஸ க்ருத்வா பைரவம் நாதம்
அஸ்த்ரம் பரமபாஸ்வரம் ।
ஸம்யோஜயத காந்தர்வம்
ராக்ஷஸேஷு மஹாபல: ॥
tē samantādatikruddhā
rāghavaṃ punarabhyayuḥ ।
taiṡca sarvā diṡō dṛṣṭvā
pradiṡaṡca samāvṛtāḥ ।
rākṣasairudyataprāsaiḥ
ṡaravarṣābhivarṣibhiḥ ।
sa kṛtvā bhairavaṃ nādam
astraṃ paramabhāsvaram ।
saṃyōjayata gāndharvaṃ
rākṣasēṣu mahābalaḥ ॥
They attacked Rāghava
from all sides, in all fury.
Seeing the Rākshasas with raised Prāsas
hem from all the four sides and in between,
raining down showers of arrows,
he of immense strength
let off a terrifying shout and
cast the blazing Gandharva Astra
on those Rākshasas.
3.25.37 ததஸ்ஸரஸஹஸ்ராணி
நிர்யயுஸ்சாபமண்டலாத் ।
ஸர்வா தஸ திஸோ பாணை:
ஆவார்யந்த ஸமாகதை: ॥
tataṡṡarasahasrāṇi
niryayuṡcāpamaṇḍalāt ।
sarvā daṡa diṡō bāṇaiḥ
āvāryanta samāgataiḥ ॥
Then a flood of thousands of arrows
emerged from the bow that was bent to a semi-circle.
Then all the ten directions
were covered with those arrows. This is the first time we get to witness Rāma's larger than life fury, strength and his extra-ordinary weapons.
3.25.38 நாததாநம் ஸராந்கோராந்
நமுஞ்சந்தம் ஸிலீமுகாந் ।
விகர்ஷமாணம் பஸ்யந்தி
ராக்ஷஸாஸ்தே ஸரார்திதா: ॥
nādadānaṃ ṡarānghōrān
namuńcantaṃ ṡilīmukhān ।
vikarṣamāṇaṃ paṡyanti
rākṣasāstē ṡarārditāḥ ॥
The Rākshasas, harried by the arrows,
could not see him taking those deadly arrows
or drawing the string or shooting them.
3.25.39 ஸராந்தகாரமாகாஸம்
ஆவ்ருணோத்ஸதிவாகரம் ।
பபூவாவஸ்திதோ ராம:
ப்ரவமந்நிவ தாஞ்சராந் ॥
ṡarāndhakāramākāṡam
āvṛṇōtsadivākaram ।
babhūvāvasthitō rāmaḥ
pravamanniva tāńcharān ॥
The darkness caused by the arrows
blotted out the sky and the sun.
It seemed as if Rāma was spewing out the arrows.
3.25.40 யுகபத்பதமாநைஸ்ச
யுகபச்ச ஹதைர்ப்ருஸம் ।
யுகபத்பதிதைஸ்சைவ
விகீர்ணா வஸுதா பவத் ॥
yugapatpatamānaiṡca
yugapacca hatairbhṛṡam ।
yugapatpatitaiṡcaiva
vikīrṇā vasudhā bhavat ॥
The earth was entirely filled
at once with those that were falling,
those that had already fell and
those that were long dead.
3.25.41 நிஹதா: பதிதா: க்ஷீணா:
சிந்நா பிந்நா விதாரிதா: ।
தத்ர தத்ர ஸ்ம த்ருஸ்யந்தே
ராக்ஷஸாஸ்தே ஸஹஸ்ரஸ: ॥
nihatāḥ patitāḥ kṣīṇāḥ
chinnā bhinnā vidāritāḥ ।
tatra tatra sma dṛṡyantē
rākṣasāstē sahasraṡaḥ ॥
The Rākshasas in their thousands,
were seen all over the place
hit, fallen, losing life,
torn apart and broken apart.
3.25.42-45 ஸோஷ்ணீஷைருத்தமாங்கைஸ்ச
ஸாங்கதைர்பாஹுபிஸ்ததா ।
ஊருபிர்ஜாநுபிஸ்சிந்நை:
நாநாரூபைவிபூஷணை: ।
ஹயைஸ்ச த்விபமுக்யைஸ்ச
ரதைர்பிந்நைரநேகஸ: ।
சாமரைர்வ்யஜநைஸ்சத்ரை:
த்வஜைர்நாநாவிதைரபி ।
ராமஸ்ய பாணாபிஹதை:
விசித்ரைஸ்ஸூலபட்டிஸை: ।
கங்கை கண்டீக்ருதை: ப்ராஸை:
விகீர்ணைஸ்ச பரஸ்வதை: ।
சூர்ணிதாபிஸ்ஸிலாபிஸ்ச
ஸரைஸ்சித்ரைரநேகஸ: ।
விச்சிந்நைஸ்ஸமரே பூமி:
விகீர்ணாऽபூத்பயங்கரா ॥

vicchinnaissamarē bhūmiḥ
vikīrṇā'bhūdbhayaṅkarā ॥
The battle ground was a
terrible sight, strewn thick
with heads with turbans on,
arms with their armlets,
and hacked thighs and knees
adorned with various ornaments,
with horses, excellent elephants and broken chariots;
with many kinds of fly-whisks and fans,
umbrellas, pennants, assorted spears and Paṭṭisas
and swords and Prāsas broken into pieces,
and Paraṡus scattered all around,
and boulders smashed into powder
and arrows broken out of shape,
hit by Rāma's arrows.

rākṣasēṣu mahābalaḥ ॥
They attacked Rāghava
from all sides, in all fury.
Seeing the Rākshasas with raised Prāsas
hem from all the four sides and in between,
raining down showers of arrows,
he of immense strength
let off a terrifying shout and
cast the blazing Gandharva Astra
on those Rākshasas.
3.25.37 ததஸ்ஸரஸஹஸ்ராணி
நிர்யயுஸ்சாபமண்டலாத் ।
ஸர்வா தஸ திஸோ பாணை:
ஆவார்யந்த ஸமாகதை: ॥
tataṡṡarasahasrāṇi
niryayuṡcāpamaṇḍalāt ।
sarvā daṡa diṡō bāṇaiḥ
āvāryanta samāgataiḥ ॥
Then a flood of thousands of arrows
emerged from the bow that was bent to a semi-circle.
Then all the ten directions
were covered with those arrows. This is the first time we get to witness Rāma's larger than life fury, strength and his extra-ordinary weapons.
3.25.38 நாததாநம் ஸராந்கோராந்
நமுஞ்சந்தம் ஸிலீமுகாந் ।
விகர்ஷமாணம் பஸ்யந்தி
ராக்ஷஸாஸ்தே ஸரார்திதா: ॥
nādadānaṃ ṡarānghōrān
namuńcantaṃ ṡilīmukhān ।
vikarṣamāṇaṃ paṡyanti
rākṣasāstē ṡarārditāḥ ॥
The Rākshasas, harried by the arrows,
could not see him taking those deadly arrows
or drawing the string or shooting them.
3.25.39 ஸராந்தகாரமாகாஸம்
ஆவ்ருணோத்ஸதிவாகரம் ।
பபூவாவஸ்திதோ ராம:
ப்ரவமந்நிவ தாஞ்சராந் ॥
ṡarāndhakāramākāṡam
āvṛṇōtsadivākaram ।
babhūvāvasthitō rāmaḥ
pravamanniva tāńcharān ॥
The darkness caused by the arrows
blotted out the sky and the sun.
It seemed as if Rāma was spewing out the arrows.
3.25.40 யுகபத்பதமாநைஸ்ச
யுகபச்ச ஹதைர்ப்ருஸம் ।
யுகபத்பதிதைஸ்சைவ
விகீர்ணா வஸுதா பவத் ॥
yugapatpatamānaiṡca
yugapacca hatairbhṛṡam ।
yugapatpatitaiṡcaiva
vikīrṇā vasudhā bhavat ॥
The earth was entirely filled
at once with those that were falling,
those that had already fell and
those that were long dead.
3.25.41 நிஹதா: பதிதா: க்ஷீணா:
சிந்நா பிந்நா விதாரிதா: ।
தத்ர தத்ர ஸ்ம த்ருஸ்யந்தே
ராக்ஷஸாஸ்தே ஸஹஸ்ரஸ: ॥
nihatāḥ patitāḥ kṣīṇāḥ
chinnā bhinnā vidāritāḥ ।
tatra tatra sma dṛṡyantē
rākṣasāstē sahasraṡaḥ ॥
The Rākshasas in their thousands,
were seen all over the place
hit, fallen, losing life,
torn apart and broken apart.
3.25.42-45 ஸோஷ்ணீஷைருத்தமாங்கைஸ்ச
ஸாங்கதைர்பாஹுபிஸ்ததா ।
ஊருபிர்ஜாநுபிஸ்சிந்நை:
நாநாரூபைவிபூஷணை: ।
ஹயைஸ்ச த்விபமுக்யைஸ்ச
ரதைர்பிந்நைரநேகஸ: ।
சாமரைர்வ்யஜநைஸ்சத்ரை:
த்வஜைர்நாநாவிதைரபி ।
ராமஸ்ய பாணாபிஹதை:
விசித்ரைஸ்ஸூலபட்டிஸை: ।
கங்கை கண்டீக்ருதை: ப்ராஸை:
விகீர்ணைஸ்ச பரஸ்வதை: ।
சூர்ணிதாபிஸ்ஸிலாபிஸ்ச
ஸரைஸ்சித்ரைரநேகஸ: ।
விச்சிந்நைஸ்ஸமரே பூமி:
விகீர்ணாऽபூத்பயங்கரா ॥
sōṣṇīṣairuttamāṅgaiṡca
sāṅgadairbāhubhistathā ।
ūrubhirjānubhiṡchinnaiḥ
nānārūpaivibhūṣaṇaiḥ ।
hayaiṡca dvipamukhyaiṡca
rathairbhinnairanēkaṡaḥ ।
cāmarairvyajanaiṡchatraiḥ
dhvajairnānāvidhairapi ।
rāmasya bāṇābhihataiḥ
vicitraiṡṡūlapaṭṭisaiḥ ।
khaṅgai khaṇḍīkṛtaiḥ prāsaiḥ
vikīrṇaiṡca paraṡvathaiḥ ।
cūrṇitābhiṡṡilābhiṡca
ṡaraiṡcitrairanēkaṡaḥ ।
vicchinnaissamarē bhūmiḥ
vikīrṇā'bhūdbhayaṅkarā ॥
The battle ground was a
terrible sight, strewn thick
with heads with turbans on,
arms with their armlets,
and hacked thighs and knees
adorned with various ornaments,
with horses, excellent elephants and broken chariots;
with many kinds of fly-whisks and fans,
umbrellas, pennants, assorted spears and Paṭṭisas
and swords and Prāsas broken into pieces,
and Paraṡus scattered all around,
and boulders smashed into powder
and arrows broken out of shape,
hit by Rāma's arrows.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே பஞ்சவிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
