Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 25
In this Sarga, the defiant Seetā, persecuted by the Rākshasis, cries over her helpless situation, wherein she cannot even take her own life!

பருஷம் தாருணம் பஹு ।
ராக்ஷஸீநாமஸௌம்யாநாம்
ருரோத ஜநகாத்மஜா ॥
atha tāsāṃ vadantīnām
paruṣaṃ dāruṇaṃ bahu ।
rākṣasīnāmasaumyānām
rurōda janakātmajā ॥
Those vicious Rākshasis went on saying
many harsh and cruel words and
the daughter of Janaka cried bitterly.

ராக்ஷஸீபிர்மநஸ்விநீ ।
உவாச பரமத்ரஸ்தா

rākṣasībhirmanasvinī ।
uvāca paramatrastā
bhāṣpagadgadayā girā ॥
When the Rākshasis badgered her thus,
the terribly scared and sensitive Vaidēhi said,
her throat choked by tears:

பார்யா பவிதுமர்ஹதி ।
காமம் காதத மாம் ஸர்வா

na mānuṣī rākṣasasya
bhāryā bhavitumarhati ।
kāmaṃ khādata māṃ sarvā
na kariṣyāmi vō vacaḥ ॥
A human cannot be the wife of a Rākshasa.
All of you, eat me, if you choose,
but I will not do what you want!

ஸீதா ஸுரஸுதோபமா ।
ந ஸர்ம லேபே து:கார்தா

sā rākṣasīmadhyagatā
sītā surasutōpamā ।
na ṡarma lēbhē duḥkhārtā
rāvaṇēna ca tarjitā ॥
Threatened by Rāvaṇa,
surrounded by Rākshasis,
the distressed Seetā, who was
like a daughter of the Dēvas,
found no source of comfort.

விஸந்தீ வாங்கமாத்மந: ।
வநே யூதபரிப்ரஷ்டா

vēpatē smādhikaṃ sītā
viṡantī vāṅgamātmanaḥ ।
vanē yūthaparibhraṣṭā
mṛgī kōkairivārditā ॥
Like a doe that had strayed from the herd
in the forest and was harried by wolves,
Seetā trembled violently, and
all her limbs seemed to sink into herself.

ஸாகாமாலம்ப்ய புஷ்பிதாம் ।
சிந்தயாமாஸ ஸோகேந

sā tvaṡōkasya vipulām
ṡākhāmālambya puṣpitām ।
cintayāmāsa ṡōkēna
bhartāraṃ bhagnamānasā ॥
Holding on to a big bough of
Aṡōka tree that was in full bloom,
she, with her heart broken,
wept, thinking of her husband.

ஸ்தநௌ நேத்ரஜலஸ்ரவை: ।
சிந்தயந்தீ ந ஸோகஸ்ய
ததாந்தமதிகச்சதி ॥
sā snāpayantī vipulau
stanau nētrajalasravaiḥ ।
cintayantī na ṡōkasya
tadāntamadhigacchati ॥
With her flowing tears bathing
her ample bosom, she kept on brooding,
finding no end to her grief.

ப்ரவாதே கதலீ யதா ।
ராக்ஷஸீநாம் பயத்ரஸ்தா

pravātē kadalī yathā ।
rākṣasīnāṃ bhayatrastā
vivarṇavadanā'bhavat ॥
Frightened by the Rākshasis,
she shook like a banana plant that
fell on the ground in high winds,
and her face became pale and lifeless.

வேபந்த்யா பரமஸ்த்ரியா: ।
தத்ருஸே கம்பிநீ வேணீ

tasyāḥ sā dīrghavipulā
vēpantyā paramastriyāḥ ।
dadṛṡē kampinī vēṇī
vyālīva parisarpatī ॥
As that noble woman shivered,
her thick and long plait swung
reminding one of a sidewinding female snake.

ஸோகோபஹதசேதநா ।
ஆர்தா வ்யஸ்ருஜதஸ்ரூணி

sā niḥṡvasantī duḥkhārtā
ṡōkōpahatacētanā ।
ārtā vyasṛjadaṡrūṇi
maithilī vilalāpa ca ॥
Maithili, feeling helpless and distressed,
cried bitterly, shedding tears and heaving sighs,
her heart broken by grief.

ஹா புநர்லக்ஷ்மணேதி ச ।
ஹா ஸ்வஸ்ரு மம கௌஸல்யே

hā rāmēti ca duḥkhārtā
hā punarlakṣmaṇēti ca ।
hā ṡvaṡru mama kausalyē
hā sumitrēti bhāminī ॥
That lovely woman, overcome with grief, wailed,
saying ‘O Rāma!’ and then saying, ‘O Lakshmaṇa!’,
‘O my mother-in-law Kousalyā!’ and ‘O Sumitrā!’

பண்டிதை: ஸமுதாஹ்ருத: ।
அகாலே துர்லபோ ம்ருத்யு:
ஸ்த்ரியா வா புருஷஸ்ய வா ।
யதஹமேவம் க்ரூராபீ
ராக்ஷஸீபிரிஹார்திதா ।
ஜீவாமி ஹீநா ராமேண
முஹூர்தமபி து:கிதா ॥
lōkapravādaḥ satyō'yam
paṇḍitaiḥ samudāhṛtaḥ ।
akālē durlabhō mṛtyuḥ
striyā vā puruṣasya vā ।
yadahamēvaṃ krūrābhī
rākṣasībhirihārditā ।
jīvāmi hīnā rāmēṇa
muhūrtamapi duḥkhitā ॥
The common saying in the world,
which is oft quoted by the matured
that there is no such thing as
death for men or women before
its time comes, must be true;
or else, how is it possible that
I live even for an hour without Rāma,
crying and enduring torture like this
inflicted by these cruel Rākshasis?

விநஸிஷ்யாம்யநாதவத் ।
ஸமுத்ரமத்யே நௌ: பூர்ணா
வாயுவேகைரிவாஹதா ॥
ēṣā'lpapuṇyā kṛpaṇā
vinaṡiṣyāmyanāthavat ।
samudramadhyē nauḥ pūrṇā
vāyuvēgairivāhatā ॥
I, with little Puṇya left,
shall perish in my misery,
with no one to care for me,
like a fully loaded ship in
mid-sea, hit by the speed of the winds.

ராக்ஷஸீவஸமாகதா ।
ஸீதாமி கலு ஸோகேந
கூலம் தோயஹதம் யதா ॥
bhartāraṃ tamapaṡyantī
rākṣasīvaṡamāgatā ।
sīdāmi khalu ṡōkēna
kūlaṃ tōyahataṃ yathā ॥
Fallen into the clutches of the Rākshasis
and seeing no sign of my husband,
I shall collapse in grief,
like a bank hit by rushing waters.

ஸிம்ஹவிக்ராந்தகாமிநம் ।
தந்யா: பஸ்யந்தி மே நாதம்

taṃ padmadalapatrākṣam
siṃhavikrāntagāminam ।
dhanyāḥ paṡyanti mē nātham
kṛtajñaṃ priyavādinam ॥
Blessed indeed are those who get to see
my lord of lotus petal-like eyes,
whose gait is like that of a lion,
whose speech is always pleasant
and who never forgets a favor done to him.

ராமேண விதிதாத்மநா ।
தீக்ஷ்ணம் விஷமிவாஸ்வாத்ய
துர்லபம் மம ஜீவிதம் ॥
sarvathā tēna hīnāyā
rāmēṇa viditātmanā ।
tīkṣṇaṃ viṣamivāsvādya
durlabhaṃ mama jīvitam ॥
Without Rāma, who has absolute clarity about himself,
I, by no means, can hang on to this life,
like one who has consumed dreadful poison.

மயா ஜந்மாந்தரே க்ருதம் ।
யேநேதம் ப்ராப்யதே து:கம்
மயா கோரம் ஸுதாருணம் ॥
kīdṛṡaṃ tu mahāpāpam
mayā janmāntarē kṛtam ।
yēnēdaṃ prāpyatē duḥkham
mayā ghōraṃ sudāruṇam ॥
What kind of sin must I have committed
over the course of my many births,
to be subject to this dreadful
and extremely terrible misery!

ஸோகேந மஹதா வ்ருதா ।
மயா நாவாப்யதே காமோ
ராக்ஷஸீபி: ஸுரக்ஷிதா ॥
jīvitaṃ tyaktumicchāmi
ṡōkēna mahatā vṛtā ।
mayā nāvāpyatē kāmō
rākṣasībhiḥ surakṣitā ॥
Engulfed in this terrible misery,
I only wish to give up this life;
but, guarded well by these Rākshasis,
my wish will not come true.

திகஸ்து பரவஸ்யதாம் ।
ந ஸக்யம் யத்பரித்யக்தும்

dhigastu khalu mānuṣyam
dhigastu paravaṡyatām ।
na ṡakyaṃ yatparityaktum
ātmacchandēna jīvitam ॥
Dhik, being a human!
Dhik, getting in the hands of others, and
being unable to take my own life as I wish!
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே பஞ்சவிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē pañcaviṃṡassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the twenty fifth Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
