vardhatē mama bhakṣaṇē ।
na ca māṃ sādhu bubudhē
mama vā vikṛtaṃ kṛtam ॥
She also widened her
terrible-looking mouth to devour me.
But she knew the least who I am
or the scheme I contrived for her.

Then I, in a split-second,
shrunk my huge size, grabbed her heart
and sprang into the sky.

nikṛttahṛdayā satī ॥
With her heart thus torn by me,
that mountainous and horrid-looking one
fell into the salty ocean
with her hands stretched and flinging.

Then I heard, the sky-bound
Siddhas and Cāraṇas saying,
‘The Rākshasi Simhika is
killed by Hanumān in a snap!’

லங்கா யத்ர ச ஸா புரீ ॥
tāṃ hatvā punarēvāham
kṛtyamātyayikaṃ smaran ।
gatvā cāha mahadhvānam
paṡyāmi nagamaṇḍitam ।
dakṣiṇaṃ tīramudadhēḥ
laṅkā yatra ca sā purī ॥
Again, after killing her,
thinking of the urgency of the mission,
I continued on my long journey
till I saw the southern shore of the ocean
that was splendid with tree cover,
where the city of Laṅkā was situated.

rakṣōbhirbhīmavikramaiḥ ॥
I entered the city, the abode of Rākshasas,
after the sun had set,
without those Rākshasas of formidable prowess
taking notice of me.

aṭṭahāsaṃ vimuńcantī
nārī kāpyutthitā puraḥ ॥
As I was entering, some woman,
who looked like a cloud that would
engulf everything at the end of the Kalpa,
arose in front of me, letting off a terrific yell.

பீதயாऽஹம் தயோதித: ॥
jighāṃsantīṃ tatastāṃ tu
jvaladagniṡirōruhām ।
savyamuṣṭiprahārēṇa
parājitya subhairavām ।
pradōṣakālē praviṡam
bhītayā'haṃ tayōditaḥ ॥
When she, her hair rising like
blazing tongues of fire,
became ready to kill me,
I knocked her down with the
clenched fist of my left hand
and entered the city in the twilight.
Scared, she then told me:

nirjitā vikramēṇa tē ।
yasmāttasmādvijētāsi
sarvarakṣāṃsyaṡēṣataḥ ॥
I am the city of Laṅkā!
With your prowess, O Veera, you will destroy
all of the Rākshasas, with no one spared,
just as you have knocked me down!

I searched for the daughter of Janaka the entire night.
I went even into the inner quarters of Rāvaṇa,
but could not find that lady of beautiful waist.

Then, not finding Seetā
in the house of Rāvaṇa,
I sank into an ocean of grief,
the end of which I could hardly see.

kāńcanaṃ kadalīvanam ॥
Jumping over that wall, I saw many trees,
and a huge Ṡiṃṡupa tree in the
midst of the pleasance of Aṡōka trees.
Climbing up that tree, I saw a
golden grove of plantains.

ஸோகஸந்தாபதீநாங்கீம்
ஸீதாம் பர்த்ருஹிதே ஸ்திதாம் ।
ராக்ஷஸீபிர்விரூபாபி:
க்ரூராபிரபிஸம்வ்ருதாம் ।
மாம்ஸஸோணிதபக்ஷாபி:
வ்யாக்ரீபிர்ஹரிணீமிவ ॥
adūrē ṡiṃṡupāvṛkṣāt< br>paṡyāmi varavarṇinīm ।
ṡyāmāṃ kamalapatrākṣīm
upavāsakṛṡānanām ।
tadēkavāsassaṃvītām
rajōdhvastaṡirōruhām ।
ṡōkasantāpadīnāṅgīm
sītāṃ bhartṛhitē sthitām ।
rākṣasībhirvirūpābhiḥ
krūrābhirabhisaṃvṛtām ।
māṃsaṡōṇitabhakṣābhiḥ
vyāghrībhirhariṇīmiva ॥
Then, not too far from there,
I saw a woman of lovely complexion
in the prime of her youth, whose
eyes were (wide) like lotus petals.
Her face was worn out from fasting
and she was wrapped in a single piece of cloth.
Her hair was disheveled, with dust covering it.
Every limb of hers was in a pitiable state,
and she was burnt out by grief.
She was surrounded by ugly and cruel Rākshasis
who lived on flesh and blood,
like a deer surrounded by female tigers.
It was Seetā, who is staunch
in upholding her lord’s interest!

பத்மிநீவ ஹிமாகமே ।
ராவணாத்விநிவ்ருத்தார்தா
மர்தவ்யக்ருதநிஸ்சயா ।
கதஞ்சிந்ம்ருகஸாபாக்ஷீ
தூர்ணமாஸாதிதா மயா ॥
sā mayā rākṣasīmadhyē
tarjyamānā muhurmuhuḥ ।
ēkavēṇīdharā dīnā
bhartṛcintāparāyaṇā ।
bhūmiṡayyā vivarṇāṅgī
padminīva himāgamē ।
rāvaṇādviniv ą ›ttārthā
martavyakṛtaniṡcayā ।
kathańcinmṛgaṡābākṣī
tūrṇamāsāditā mayā ॥
Thus I found her in the middle of Rākshasis
who were threatening her again and again.
Her hair braided into a single plait,
her limbs turned lifeless,
having the bare ground for her bed,
and lost in the thoughts of her husband,
she was in a pitiable state.
She was like lotus vine
at the onset of winter,
resolved in her mind to die,
having rejected Rāvaṇa’s temptations.
I somehow managed to quickly
reach her, of the gazelle eyes.

tāṃ dṛṣṭvā tādṛṡīṃ nārīm
rāmapatnīṃ yaṡasvinīm ।
tatraiva ṡiṃṡupāvṛkṣē
paṡyannahamavasthitaḥ ॥
Seeing her, the wife of Rāma of great renown
in that condition, I remained
on the Ṡiṃṡupa tree, watching.

rāvaṇasya nivēṡanē ॥
Then I heard quite a great hubbub
emanating from Rāvaṇa’s house,
mixed with the jingling of girdles and anklets.

ஸ்வம் ரூபம் ப்ரத்யஸம்ஹரம் ।

tatō'haṃ paramōdvignaḥ
svaṃ rūpaṃ pratyasaṃharam ।
ahaṃ tu ṡiṃṡupāvṛkṣē
pakṣīva gahanē sthitaḥ ॥
Then, extremely worried,
I shrunk myself considerably
and remained on the Ṡiṃṡupa tree
like a bird in the dense foliage.

rāvaṇaṡca mahābalaḥ ।
taṃ dēṡaṃ samanuprāptā
yatra sītā'bhavat sthitā ॥
Then Rāvaṇa of immense strength and
his wives arrived at that place where Seetā was.

sītā rakṣōgaṇēṡvaram ।
saṅkucyōrūstanau pīnau

On seeing the lord of the Rākshasa hosts,
Seetā of beautiful Kaṭee crouched on her
haunches, hiding her ample breasts with her arms.

பஹுமந்யஸ்வ மாமிதி ॥
vitrastāṃ paramōdvignām
vīkṣamāṇāṃ tatastataḥ ।
trāṇaṃ kińcidapaṡyantīm
vēpamānāṃ tapasvinīm ।
tāmuvāca daṡagrīvaḥ
sītāṃ paramaduḥkhitām ।
avākcirāḥ prapatitō
bahumanyasva māmiti ॥
The Ten-headed, getting down
on to the ground and bowing his head,
said to pitiful Seetā who was terrified,
greatly agitated, extremely sad,
looking all around shaking,
and seeing no one coming to her rescue,
‘please deem me worthy of your regard!’

nābhinandasi garvitē ।
dvau māsāvantaraṃ sītē
pāsyāmi rudhiraṃ tava ॥
O Seetā! O proud one!
If you, in your haughtiness,
do not show me proper respect,
I shall drink your blood
after the passing of two more months.

Hearing those words of the evil-minded Rāvaṇa,
Seetā became very angry and said these spirited words:

கதம் ந பதிதா தவ ॥
rākṣasādhama rāmasya
bhāryāmamitatējasaḥ ।
ikṣvākukulanāthasya
snuṣāṃ daṡarathasya ca ।
avācyaṃ vadatō jihvā
kathaṃ na patitā tava ॥
O Rākshasa scum, how is it that
your tongue does not fall down when
you address the daughter-in-law of Daṡaratha,
the wife of Rāma, the lord of the
Ikshwāku lineage of immense splendor,
with such outrageous words?

yō māṃ bharturasannidhau ।
apahṛtyā''gataḥ pāpa
tē nādṛṣṭō mahātmanā ॥
O ignoble sinner! Trifle is your valor
with which you carried me off
in the absence of my husband,
unseen by that Mahātma!

na tvaṃ rāmasya sadṛṡō
dāsyē'pyasya na yujyasē ।
yajńīyassatyavādī ca
raṇaṡlāghī ca rāghavaḥ ॥
You are no comparison to Rāma.
You are not even fit to be his servant.
Rāghava performs Yajńas, upholds truth
and is admired on the battle field.

ஏவமுக்தோ தஸாநந: ।

ēvamuktō daṡānanaḥ ।
jajvāla sahasā kōpāt
citāstha iva pāvakaḥ ॥
No sooner had he heard Jānaki’s harsh words,
than the Ten-headed blazed in wrath
like the fire of the funeral pyre.

முஷ்டிமுத்யம்ய தக்ஷிணம் ।

vivṛtya nayanē krūrē
muṣṭimudyamya dakṣiṇam ।
maithilīṃ hantumārabdhaḥ
strībhirhāhākṛtaṃ tadā ॥
Rolling his cruel eyes,
lifting his clenched right fist,
he was ready to kill Maithili,
when the women began to wail.

tasya bhāryā durātmanaḥ ।
varā mandōdarī nāma
tayā sa pratiṣēdhitaḥ ॥
Rising from their midst,
a good woman by name Mandōdari,
wife of that evil-minded one,
came up to him and held him back.

tayā sa madanārditaḥ ।
sītayā tava kiṃ kāryam
mahēndrasamavikramaḥ ॥
Then he, who was tormented by lust,
was spoken to in a sweet voice by her,
‘What do you, an equal to Mahēndra
in prowess, have to do with her?’

yakṣakanyābhirēva ca ।
sārdhaṃ prabhō ramasvēha
sītayā kiṃ kariṣyasi ॥
Sport, my lord, with the
youthful women of Dēvas, Gandharvas
and Yakshas here. Why bother about Seetā?’

prasādya sahasā nītō
bhavanaṃ svaṃ niṡācaraḥ ॥
Then those women, together, pacified
that night-rover of immense strength
and took him back quickly to his palace.

She also widened her
terrible-looking mouth to devour me.
But she knew the least who I am
or the scheme I contrived for her.

laṅkā yatra ca sā purī ॥
Again, after killing her,
thinking of the urgency of the mission,
I continued on my long journey
till I saw the southern shore of the ocean
that was splendid with tree cover,
where the city of Laṅkā was situated.

taking notice of me.

When she, her hair rising like
blazing tongues of fire,
became ready to kill me,
I knocked her down with the
clenched fist of my left hand
and entered the city in the twilight.

I am the city of Laṅkā!
With your prowess, O Veera, you will destroy
all of the Rākshasas, with no one spared,
just as you have knocked me down!

but could not find that lady of beautiful waist.

Jumping over that wall, I saw many trees,
and a huge Ṡiṃṡupa tree in the
midst of the pleasance of Aṡōka trees.
Climbing up that tree, I saw a
golden grove of plantains.

upavāsakṛṡānanām ।
tadēkavāsassaṃvītām
rajōdhvastaṡirōruhām ।
ṡōkasantāpadīnāṅgīm
sītāṃ bhartṛhitē sthitām ।
rākṣasībhirvirūpābhiḥ
krūrābhirabhisaṃvṛtām ।
māṃsaṡōṇitabhakṣābhiḥ
vyāghrībhirhariṇīmiva ॥
Then, not too far from there,
I saw a woman of lovely complexion
in the prime of her youth, whose
eyes were (wide) like lotus petals.
Her face was worn out from fasting
and she was wrapped in a single piece of cloth.
Her hair was disheveled, with dust covering it.
Every limb of hers was in a pitiable state,
and she was burnt out by grief.
She was surrounded by ugly and cruel Rākshasis
who lived on flesh and blood,
like a deer surrounded by female tigers.
It was Seetā, who is staunch
in upholding her lord’s interest!

தூர்ணமாஸாதிதா மயா ॥
sā mayā rākṣasīmadhyē
tarjyamānā muhurmuhuḥ ।
ēkavēṇīdharā dīnā
bhartṛcintāparāyaṇā ।
bhūmiṡayyā vivarṇāṅgī
padminīva himāgamē ।
rāvaṇādviniv ą ›ttārthā
martavyakṛtaniṡcayā ।
kathańcinmṛgaṡābākṣī
tūrṇamāsāditā mayā ॥
Thus I found her in the middle of Rākshasis
who were threatening her again and again.
Her hair braided into a single plait,
her limbs turned lifeless,
having the bare ground for her bed,
and lost in the thoughts of her husband,
she was in a pitiable state.
She was like lotus vine
at the onset of winter,
resolved in her mind to die,
having rejected Rāvaṇa’s temptations.
I somehow managed to quickly
reach her, of the gazelle eyes.

Seeing her, the wife of Rāma of great renown
in that condition, I remained
on the Ṡiṃṡupa tree, watching.

emanating from Rāvaṇa’s house,
mixed with the jingling of girdles and anklets.

Then, extremely worried,
I shrunk myself considerably
and remained on the Ṡiṃṡupa tree
like a bird in the dense foliage.

taṃ dēṡaṃ samanuprāptā

Then Rāvaṇa of immense strength and
his wives arrived at that place where Seetā was.

On seeing the lord of the Rākshasa hosts,
Seetā of beautiful Kaṭee crouched on her
haunches, hiding her ample breasts with her arms.

vitrastāṃ paramōdvignām
vīkṣamāṇāṃ tatastataḥ ।
trāṇaṃ kińcidapaṡyantīm
vēpamānāṃ tapasvinīm ।
tāmuvāca daṡagrīvaḥ
sītāṃ paramaduḥkhitām ।
avākcirāḥ prapatitō
bahumanyasva māmiti ॥
The Ten-headed, getting down
on to the ground and bowing his head,
said to pitiful Seetā who was terrified,
greatly agitated, extremely sad,
looking all around shaking,
and seeing no one coming to her rescue,
‘please deem me worthy of your regard!’

O Seetā! O proud one!
If you, in your haughtiness,
do not show me proper respect,
I shall drink your blood
after the passing of two more months.

Hearing those words of the evil-minded Rāvaṇa,

ikṣvākukulanāthasya
snuṣāṃ daṡarathasya ca ।
avācyaṃ vadatō jihvā
kathaṃ na patitā tava ॥
O Rākshasa scum, how is it that
your tongue does not fall down when
you address the daughter-in-law of Daṡaratha,
the wife of Rāma, the lord of the
Ikshwāku lineage of immense splendor,
with such outrageous words?

O ignoble sinner! Trifle is your valor
with which you carried me off
in the absence of my husband,
unseen by that Mahātma!

na tvaṃ rāmasya sadṛṡō
dāsyē'pyasya na yujyasē ।
yajńīyassatyavādī ca
raṇaṡlāghī ca rāghavaḥ ॥
You are no comparison to Rāma.
You are not even fit to be his servant.
Rāghava performs Yajńas, upholds truth
and is admired on the battle field.

ēvamuktō daṡānanaḥ ।
jajvāla sahasā kōpāt
citāstha iva pāvakaḥ ॥
No sooner had he heard Jānaki’s harsh words,
than the Ten-headed blazed in wrath
like the fire of the funeral pyre.

muṣṭimudyamya dakṣiṇam ।
maithilīṃ hantumārabdhaḥ
strībhirhāhākṛtaṃ tadā ॥
Rolling his cruel eyes,
lifting his clenched right fist,
he was ready to kill Maithili,
when the women began to wail.

tasya bhāryā durātmanaḥ ।
varā mandōdarī nāma
tayā sa pratiṣēdhitaḥ ॥
Rising from their midst,
a good woman by name Mandōdari,
wife of that evil-minded one,
came up to him and held him back.

sītayā tava kiṃ kāryam
mahēndrasamavikramaḥ ॥
Then he, who was tormented by lust,
was spoken to in a sweet voice by her,
‘What do you, an equal to Mahēndra
in prowess, have to do with her?’

sārdhaṃ prabhō ramasvēha

Sport, my lord, with the
youthful women of Dēvas, Gandharvas
and Yakshas here. Why bother about Seetā?’
