Baala Kaanda - Sarga 76
In this Sarga, Rāma mounts an arrow on the bow of Vishṇu. Rāma, the son of Jamadagni realizes that Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha is none other than Vishṇu himself. After Rāma’s arrow takes away his privilege of higher Lōkas that he attained through Tapa, he returns to mount Mahēndra.
1.76.1
ஸ்ருத்வா தஜ்ஜாமதக்ந்யஸ்ய வாக்யம் தாஸரதிஸ்ததா ।
கௌரவாத்யம்ந்த்ரிதகத: பிதூ ராமமதாப்ரவீத் ॥
ṡrutvā tajjāmadagnyasya vākyaṃ dāṡarathistadā ।
gauravādyaṃntritakatha: pitū rāmamathābravīt ॥
On hearing the words of the son of Jamadagni,
the son of Daṡaratha, out of respect to his father
spoke in a restrained voice:

ஸ்ருதவாநஸ்மி யத்கர்ம க்ருதவாநஸி பார்கவ! ।
அநுரும்த்யாமஹே ப்ரஹ்மந் பிதுராந்ருண்யமாஸ்திதம் ॥
ṡrutavānasmi yatkarma kṛtavānasi bhārgava! ।
anuruṃdhyāmahē brahman piturānṛṇyamāsthitam ॥
O descendent of Bhṛgu!
I am well aware of what you have done!
O Brahman! Congratulations on
redeeming (the murder of) your father!
1.76.3
வீர்யஹீநமிவாஸக்தம் க்ஷத்ரதர்மேண பார்கவ! ।
அவஜாநாஸி மே தேஜ: பஸ்ய மேऽத்ய பராக்ரமம் ॥
vīryahīnamivāṡaktaṃ kṣatradharmēṇa bhārgava! ।
avajānāsi mē tēja: paṡya mē'dya parākramam ॥
But you slight me as if I am a weakling and
unfitting of my Kshatra Dharma!
O descendent of Bhṛgu! You shall
now see my power and prowess!
1.76.4
இத்யுக்த்வா ராகவ: க்ருத்தோ பார்கவஸ்ய ஸராஸநம் ।
ஸரம் ச ப்ரதிஜக்ராஹ ஹஸ்தால்லகுபராக்ரம: ॥
ityuktvā rāghava: kruddhō bhārgavasya ṡarāsanam ।
ṡaraṃ ca pratijagrāha hastāllaghuparākrama: ॥
The angry prince of Raghu dynasty, saying thus,
effortlessly snatched the bow from
the hands of the descendant of Bhṛgu along with the arrow.
1.76.5
ஆரோப்ய ஸ தநூ ராமஸ்ஸரம் ஸஜ்யம் சகார ஹ ।
ஜாமதக்ந்யம் ததோ ராமம் ராம: க்ருத்தோऽப்ரவீத்வச: ॥
ārōpya sa dhanū rāmaṡṡaraṃ sajyaṃ cakāra ha ।
jāmadagnyaṃ tatō rāmaṃ rāma: kruddhō'bravīdvaca: ॥
After bending the bow and stringing it,
Rāma mounted the arrow on it and said to
Rāma, son of Jamadagni, in wrath:
1.76.6
ப்ராஹ்மணோऽஸீதி பூஜ்யோ மே விஸ்வாமித்ரக்ருதேந ச ।
தஸ்மாச்சக்தோ ந தே ராம மோக்தும் ப்ராணஹரம் ஸரம் ॥
brāhmaṇō'sīti pūjyō mē viṡvāmitrakṛtēna ca ।
tasmācchaktō na tē rāma mōktuṃ prāṇaharaṃ ṡaram ॥
Because you are a Brāhmaṇa and related to Viṡwāmitra,
you deserve to be respected.
Hence I cannot release this arrow upon you,
which can take away your life.
1.76.7
இமாம் பாதகதிம் ராம! தபோபலஸமார்ஜிதாம் ।
லோகாநப்ரதிமாந்வா தே ஹநிஷ்யாமி யதிச்சஸி ॥
imāṃ pādagatiṃ rāma! tapōbalasamārjitām ।
lōkānapratimānvā tē haniṣyāmi yadicchasi ॥
O Rāma! Hence I would destroy
either the speed of your movement
or your privilege to the unparalleled Lōkas
that you acquired through your power of Tapa!

1.76.8
ந ஹ்யயம் வைஷ்ணவோ திவ்யஸ்ஸர: பரபுரஞ்ஜய: ।
மோக: பததி வீர்யேண பலதர்பவிநாஸந: ॥
na hyayaṃ vaiṣṇavō divyaṡṡara: parapurañjaya: ।
mōgha: patati vīryēṇa baladarpavināṡanaḥ ॥
This divine arrow of Vishṇu,
that can destroy all the cities of the enemies,
and hubris and arrogance as well,
cannot go for naught.
1.76.9-10
வராயுததரம் ராமம் த்ரஷ்டும் ஸர்ஷிகணாஸ்ஸுரா: ।
பிதாமஹம் புரஸ்க்ருத்ய ஸமேதாஸ்தத்ர ஸங்கஸ: ॥
கந்தர்வாப்ஸரஸஸ்சைவ ஸித்தசாரணகிந்நரா: ।
யக்ஷராக்ஷஸநாகாஸ்ச தத்த்ரஷ்டும் மஹதத்புதம் ॥
varāyudhadharaṃ rāmaṃ draṣṭuṃ sarṣigaṇāssurā: ।
pitāmahaṃ puraskṛtya samētāstatra saṅghaṡa: ॥
gandharvāpsarasaṡcaiva siddhacāraṇakinnarā: ।
yakṣarākṣasanāgāṡca taddraṣṭuṃ mahadadbhutam ॥
All the Dēvas led by the Progenitor
along with Ṛshis, Gandharvas, Apsaras,
Siddhas, Rākshasas and Nāgas assembled
to see that marvelous spectacle of
Rāma armed with that superb weapon.
1.76.11
ஜடீக்ருதே ததாऽலோகே ராமே வரதநுர்தரே ।
நிர்வீர்யோ ஜாமதக்ந்யோऽஸௌ ராமோ ராமமுதைக்ஷத ॥
jaḍīkṛtē tadā'lōkē rāmē varadhanurdharē ।
nirvīryō jāmadagnyō'sau rāmō rāmamudaikṣata ॥
Rāma, the son of Jamadagni, watched
Rāma (the son of Daṡaratha) holding
that superb bow, in awe,
as the worlds were rendered motionless,
and he himself was rendered impotent.
1.76.12
தேஜோபிஹதவீர்யத்வாஜ்ஜாமதக்ந்யோ ஜடீக்ருத: ।
ராமம் கமலபத்ராக்ஷம் மந்தம் மந்தமுவாச ஹ ॥
tējōbhihatavīryatvājjāmadagnyō jaḍīkṛta: ।
rāmaṃ kamalapatrākṣaṃ mandaṃ mandamuvāca ha ॥
After that mighty prowess destroyed
his strength and rendered him motionless
the son of Jamadagni spoke slowly and gently
to Rāma, the lotus eyed:
1.76.13
காஸ்யபாய மயா தத்தா யதா பூர்வம் வஸுந்தரா ।
விஷயே மே ந வஸ்தவ்யமிதி மாம் காஸ்யபோऽப்ரவீத் ॥
kāṡyapāya mayā dattā yadā pūrvaṃ vasundharā ।
viṣayē mē na vastavyamiti māṃ kāṡyapō'bravīt ॥
A long time ago, when the entire lands
on the earth were given to Kāṡyapa by me
he made it clear that I should not
live in any part within that area.
This Ṡlōka illustrates the meaning of true giving without any strings, whatsoever, attached.
1.76.14
ஸோऽஹம் குருவச: குர்வந் ப்ருதிவ்யாம் ந வஸே நிஸாம் ।
க்ருதா ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா காகுத்ஸ்த! க்ருதா பூ: காஸ்யபஸ்ய ஹி ॥
sō'haṃ guruvaca: kurvan pṛthivyāṃ na vasē niṡām ।
kṛtā pratijñā kākutstha! kṛtā bhū: kāṡyapasya hi ॥
O prince of Kākutstha lineage!
I vowed to him so, and in deference to
those words of my Guru,
I would not like to spend the night on this earth!
1.76.15
ததிமாம் த்வம் கதிம் வீர ஹந்தும் நார்ஹஸி ராகவ ।
மநோஜவம் கமிஷ்யாமி மஹேந்த்ரம் பர்வதோத்தமம் ॥
tadimāṃ tvaṃ gatiṃ vīra hantuṃ nārhasi rāghava ।
manōjavaṃ gamiṣyāmi mahēndraṃ parvatōttamam ॥
O Veera! Hence please do not hamper my speed.
O prince of Raghu dynasty! I will now depart
instantaneously, with the speed of mind,
back to that great mount Mahēndra!
1.76.16
லோகாஸ்த்வப்ரதிமா ராம நிர்ஜிதாஸ்தபஸா மயா ।
ஜஹி தாந் ஸரமுக்யேந மா பூத்காலஸ்ய பர்யய: ॥
lōkāstvapratimā rāma nirjitāstapasā mayā ।
jahi tān ṡaramukhyēna mā bhūtkālasya paryaya: ॥
O Rāma! May you hence target,
with that exceptional arrow
my privilege to the exceptional Lōkas,
which has been won by me with Tapa,
without any further delay!
1.76.17
அக்ஷய்யம் மதுஹந்தாரம் ஜாநாமி த்வாம் ஸுரேஸ்வரம் ।
தநுஷோऽஸ்ய பராமர்ஸாத் ஸ்வஸ்தி தேऽஸ்து பரம்தப! ॥
akṣayyaṃ madhuhantāraṃ jānāmi tvāṃ surēṡvaram ।
dhanuṣō'sya parāmarṡāt svasti tē'stu paraṃtapa! ॥
From your ability to handle this bow,
I realize that you are none other than the
imperishable lord of Dēvas, the slayer of Madhu!
O tormentor of foes! May all bode well for you!
Madhu is one of the Rākshasas killed by lord Vishṇu.
1.76.18
ஏதே ஸுரகணாஸ்ஸர்வே நிரீக்ஷந்தே ஸமாகதா: ।
த்வாமப்ரதிமகர்மாணமப்ரதித்வந்த்வமாஹவே ॥
ētē suragaṇāssarvē nirīkṣantē samāgatā: ।
tvāmapratimakarmāṇamapratidvandvamāhavē ॥
All the assembled Dēvas are watching you, who are
of stupendous deeds and without a rival in fight.
1.76.19
ந சேயம் மம காகுத்ஸ்த! வ்ரீலா பவிதுமர்ஹதி ।
த்வயா த்ரைலோக்யநாதேந யதஹம் விமுகீக்ருத: ॥
na cēyaṃ mama kākutstha! vrīlā bhavitumarhati ।
tvayā trailōkyanāthēna yadahaṃ vimukhīkṛta: ॥
O prince of Kākutstha lineage!
It is indeed no matter of shame for me,
to be defeated by the lord of the three worlds!
1.76.20
ஸரமப்ரதிமம் ராம! மோக்துமர்ஹஸி ஸுவ்ரத! ।
ஸரமோக்ஷே கமிஷ்யாமி மஹேந்த்ரம் பர்வதோத்தமம் ॥
ṡaramapratimaṃ rāma! mōktumarhasi suvrata! ।
ṡaramōkṣē gamiṣyāmi mahēndraṃ parvatōttamam ॥
O Rāma! O highly disciplined!
You may now release that exceptional arrow!
After you release that arrow,
I will go back to mount Mahēndra,
the best among mountains!
1.76.21
ததா ப்ருவதி ராமே து ஜாமதக்நயே ப்ரதாபவாந் ।
ராமோ தாஸரதிஸ்ஸ்ரீமாந் சிக்ஷேப ஸரமுத்தமம் ॥
tathā bruvati rāmē tu jāmadagnayē pratāpavān ।
rāmō dāṡarathiṡṡrīmān cikṣēpa ṡaramuttamam ॥
When Rāma, the son of Jamadagni spoke thus,
the valiant Rāma, son of Daṡaratha,
deployed that exceptional arrow.
1.76.22
ஸ ஹதாந் த்ருஸ்ய ராமேண ஸ்வாம்ல்லோகாம்ஸ்தபஸார்ஜிதாந் ।
ஜாமதக்ந்யோ ஜகாமாஸு மஹேந்த்ரம் பர்வதோத்தமம் ॥
sa hatān dṛṡya rāmēṇa svāṃllōkāṃstapasārjitān ।
jāmadagnyō jagāmāṡu mahēndraṃ parvatōttamam ॥
Seeing the privilege to all the Lōkas
gained by the merit of Tapa
having thus been destroyed,
the son of Jamadagni left for the
exceptional mount Mahēndra.
1.76.23
ததோ விதிமிராஸ்ஸர்வா திஸஸ்சோபதிஸஸ்ததா ।
ஸுரா ஸ்ஸர்ஷிகணா ராமம் ப்ரஸஸம்ஸுருதாயுதம் ॥
tatō vitimirāssarvā diṡaṡcōpadiṡastathā ।
surā ssarṣigaṇā rāmaṃ praṡaṡaṃsurudāyudham ॥
Then the darkness in every direction
and in-between was cleared.
All the Dēvas along with the host of Ṛshis
lauded Rāma, who was wielding that exceptional weapon.
1.76.24
ராமம் தாஸரதிம் ராமோ ஜாமதக்ந்ய: ப்ரஸஸ்ய ச ।
தத: ப்ரதக்ஷிணீ க்ருத்ய ஜகாமாத்மகதிம் ப்ரபு: ॥
rāmaṃ dāṡarathiṃ rāmō jāmadagnya: praṡasya ca ।
tata: pradakṣiṇī kṛtya jagāmātmagatiṃ prabhu: ॥
Rāma, the son of Jamadagni also lauded
Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha.
After performing Pradakshiṇa to him,
he left for his destination.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
பாலகாண்டே ஷட்ஸப்ததிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
bālakāṇḍē ṣaṭsaptatitamassarga: ॥
Thus concludes the seventy sixth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
We completed reading 2210 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
