    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 12
In this Sarga, Daṡaratha, the grief stricken King, responds to Kaikēyee’s unreasonable, fear driven, misguided demand of the two boons of crowning Bharata and sending Rāma to Vana.

He laments. He pleads. He curses. He explains the repercussions for Rāma, Bharata, himself, herself, Kousalyā, Seetā, the Ikshwāku dynasty and all others. He speaks of his inability to comply. He pleads for mercy.

Ramayana is called a Kāvya not without a reason. It is moving scenes like these, of a perfectly sane person driven completely insane for no fault of his own, finding no source of comfort, that dot throughout its course that justify the glory this poem receives in the literary circles and in popular mind.

Hit by the bolt of lightning, of the boons asked by Kaikēyee, Daṡaratha goes through bouts of grief swinging from consciousness to unconsciousness and back, speaking half logically and half emotionally.

He responds to Kaikēyee as a husband who has been wronged, as a king whose dignity has been put at stake, as a father whose beloved son will be deprived of minimum comforts that even a common man in a rural place enjoys, and as a destitute who finds no recourse whatsoever out of the predicament except seeing himself die.

It is for no simple reason that this Sarga has moved the hearts of people for millennia!

On hearing those terrible words of Kaikēyee, the great King
became engulfed in grief and felt stupefied for a moment.

“Am I dreaming or under a delusion?
Is my faculty of experience failing me?
    Is my mind severely impaired?”
Thinking thus, the king could find no comfort.

It took a while for him to regain consciousness,
after thus being lashed by the words of Kaikēyee.
He was troubled and fazed like
a deer that had caught sight of a tigress.
Collapsed on the bare floor, he heaved a long sigh
like a virulent viper that was charmed into submission by Mantras!
With his senses impaired by tides of grief,
saying “Wretchedness!”, he fell into a bout of delusion again!

Indra took the form of a hawk and Agni took the form of a pigeon. The hawk chased the pigeon, its prey. The pigeon flew to King Ṡaibya and sought refuge. King Ṡaibya gave his own flesh, equal to the weight of the pigeon, to save it from being a meal to the hawk!

Note: Ṡaibya is also known as Ṡibi.

    Alarka’s story:

A blind Brāhmaṇa approached King Alarka and asked for his eyes, in order to regain his eye sight. King Alarka, without a second thought, donated his eyes immediately to that Brāhmaṇa.
