Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 18
After entering his father’s inner apartment, in this Sarga, Rāma sees him miserable and unable to speak a word. He fails to fathom the reason and asks queen Kaikēyee for the reason.
Kaikēyee tells him in no uncertain terms, what the king could not. She tells him about the two boons and she asks him to leave to the forest immediately, so that the arrangements made for his consecration could be used for Bharata’s consecration and he would make his father a keeper of his word.
2.18.1 ஸ ததர்ஸாஸநே ராமோ நிஷண்ணம் பிதரம் ஸுபே ।
கைகேயீஸஹிதம் தீநம் முகேந பரிஸுஷ்யதா ॥
sa dadarṡāsanē rāmō niṣaṇṇaṃ pitaraṃ ṡubhē ।
kaikēyīsahitaṃ dīnaṃ mukhēna pariṡuṣyatā ॥
Rāma saw his father seated on an splendid couch
along with Kaikēyee, looking miserable,
his face parched with grief.
2.18.2 ஸ பிதுஸ்சரணௌ பூர்வமபிவாத்ய விநீதவத் ।
ததோ வவந்தே சரணௌ கைகேய்யா ஸ்ஸுஸமாஹித: ॥
sa pituṡcaraṇau pūrvamabhivādya vinītavat ।
tatō vavandē caraṇau kaikēyyā ssusamāhitaḥ ॥
With utmost humility and composure,
he offered respects to his father’s feet
and then to the feet of Kaikēyee.
2.18.3 ராமேத்யுக்த்வா து வசநம் பாஷ்பபர்யாகுலேக்ஷண: ।
ஸஸாக ந்ருபதிர்தீநோ நேக்ஷிதும் நாபிபாஷிதும் ॥
rāmētyuktvā tu vacanaṃ bāṣpaparyākulēkṣaṇaḥ ।
ṡaṡāka nṛpatirdīnō nēkṣituṃ nābhibhāṣitum ॥
‘O Rāma!’ said he, with tears in his eyes.
He could say no more, and was not able to
even glance at him, overtaken by grief!
2.18.4 ததபூர்வம் நரபதேர்த்ருஷ்ட்வா ரூபம் பயாவஹம் ।
ராமோऽபி பயமாபந்ந: பதா ஸ்ப்ருஷ்ட்வேவ பந்நகம் ॥
tadapūrvaṃ narapatērdṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ bhayāvaham ।
rāmō'pi bhayamāpannaḥ padā spṛṣṭvēva pannagam ॥
Having never seen him in such a terrible shape,
Rāma was seized with fear,
like one who had stepped on a serpent.
2.18.5-6 இந்த்ரியைரப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டைஸ்தம் ஸோகஸந்தாபகர்ஸிதம் ।
நிஸ்ஸ்வஸந்தம் மஹாராஜம் வ்யதிதாகுலசேதஸம் ॥
ஊர்மிமாலிநமக்ஷோப்யம் க்ஷுப்யந்தமிவ ஸாகரம் ।
உபப்லுதமிவாதித்யமுக்தாந்ருதம்ருஷிம் யதா ॥
indriyairaprahṛṣṭaistaṃ ṡōkasantāpakarṡitam ।
niṡṡvasantaṃ mahārājaṃ vyathitākulacētasam ॥
ūrmimālinamakṣōbhyaṃ kṣubhyantamiva sāgaram ।
upaplutamivādityamuktānṛtamṛṣiṃ yathā ॥
There is no sign of joy in any of his senses
of that king of kings.
He was wilting under the fire of grief and sighing deeply.
His mind was perturbed by immense grief.
Unshakable ocean that he was,
he then convulsed like a ocean with a series of tides.
He was like the sun eclipsed and
like a Ṛshi who had uttered a lie.
2.18.7 அசிந்த்யகல்பம் ஹி பிதுஸ்தம் ஸோகமுபதாரயந் ।
பபூவ ஸம்ரப்ததர ஸ்ஸமுத்ர இவ பர்வணி ॥
acintyakalpaṃ hi pitustaṃ ṡōkamupadhārayan ।
babhūva saṃrabdhatara ssamudra iva parvaṇi ॥
Thinking of that unfathomable grief of his father,
he became agitated like the ocean on a full moon day.
2.18.8 சிந்தயாமாஸ ச ததா ராம: பித்ருஹிதே ரத: ।
கிம் ஸ்விதத்யைவ ந்ருபதிர்ந மாம் ப்ரத்யபிநந்ததி ॥
cintayāmāsa ca tadā rāmaḥ pitṛhitē rataḥ ।
kiṃ svidadyaiva nṛpatirna māṃ pratyabhinandati ॥
Rāma, who wished all well for his father,
was at his wit’s end, in spite of being as discerning as he was,
as to why the king did not greet him with delight as usual!
2.18.9 அந்யதா மாம் பிதா த்ருஷ்ட்வா குபிதோऽபி ப்ரஸீததி ।
தஸ்ய மாமத்ய ஸம்ப்ரேக்ஷ்ய கிமாயாஸ: ப்ரவர்ததே ॥
anyadā māṃ pitā dṛṣṭvā kupitō'pi prasīdati ।
tasya māmadya saṃprēkṣya kimāyāsaḥ pravartatē ॥
“He used to regain his good humor
even if he was angry, on seeing me.
Why is he feeling so sad seeing me today?”
2.18.10 ஸ தீந இவ ஸோகார்தோ விஷண்ணவதநத்யுதி: ।
கைகேயீமபிவாத்யைவ ராமோ வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
sa dīna iva ṡōkārtō viṣaṇṇavadanadyutiḥ ।
kaikēyīmabhivādyaiva rāmō vacanamabravīt ॥
Racked by grief, and feeling miserable,
Rāma asked Kaikēyee with a sad, lack-luster face
as he made his prostrations to her:
2.18.11 கச்சிந்மயா நாபராத்தமஜ்ஞாநாத்யேந மே பிதா ।
குபிதஸ்தந்மமாசக்ஷ்வ த்வம் சைவைநம் ப்ரஸாதய ॥
kaccinmayā nāparāddhamajñānādyēna mē pitā ।
kupitastanmamācakṣva tvaṃ caivainaṃ prasādaya ॥
Have I unwittingly offended my father?
Please tell me why he is angry with me!
You alone can make him become graceful towards me!
2.18.12 அப்ரஸந்நமநா: கிந்நு ஸதா மாம் ப்ரதி வத்ஸல: ।
விவர்ணவதநோ தீநோ ந ஹி மாமபிபாஷதே ॥
aprasannamanāḥ kinnu sadā māṃ prati vatsalaḥ ।
vivarṇavadanō dīnō na hi māmabhibhāṣatē ॥
He is always affectionate towards me.
Why is he unhappy? Why is he not speaking?
Why is he so depressed? Why is his face so pale?
2.18.13 ஸரீரோ மாநஸோ வாபி கச்சிதேநம் ந பாததே ।
ஸந்தாபோவாऽபிதாபோ வா துர்லபம் ஹி ஸதா ஸுகம் ॥
ṡarīrō mānasō vāpi kaccidēnaṃ na bādhatē ।
santāpōvā'bhitāpō vā durlabhaṃ hi sadā sukham ॥
Is he suffering from bodily pain or mental anguish?
For it is not given to anyone to be all right all the time!
2.18.14 கச்சிந்ந கிஞ்சித்பரதே குமாரே ப்ரியதர்ஸநே ।
ஸத்ருக்நே வா மஹாஸத்த்வே மாத்ரூணாம் வா மமாஸுபம் ॥
kaccinna kiñcidbharatē kumārē priyadarṡanē ।
ṡatrughnē vā mahāsattvē mātrūṇāṃ vā mamāṡubham ॥
I hope no misfortune has befallen on the pleasing Bharata
or on the mighty strong Ṡatrughna or on any of my mothers!
2.18.15 அதோஷயந்மஹாராஜமகுர்வந்வா பிதுர்வச: ।
முஹூர்தமபி நேச்சேயம் ஜீவிதும் குபிதே ந்ருபே ॥
atōṣayanmahārājamakurvanvā piturvacaḥ ।
muhūrtamapi nēcchēyaṃ jīvituṃ kupitē nṛpē ॥
If I were to make the lord of kings unhappy,
or were to not fulfill the word of my father,
or even to gain the displeasure of the king,
I would not wish to live even for a moment!
2.18.16 யதோமூலம் நர: பஸ்யேத்ப்ராதுர்பாவமிஹாத்மந: ।
கதம் தஸ்மிந்நவர்தேத ப்ரத்யக்ஷே ஸதி தைவதே ॥
yatōmūlaṃ naraḥ paṡyētprādurbhāvamihātmanaḥ ।
kathaṃ tasminnavartēta pratyakṣē sati daivatē ॥
How else can any son be with one’s father
who is the very source of one’s own existence
and who is like a god right in front of the eyes?
2.18.17 கச்சித்தே பருஷம் கிஞ்சிதபிமாநாத்பதிதா மம ।
உக்தோ பவத்யா கோபேந யத்ராஸ்ய லுலிதம் மந: ॥
kaccittē paruṣaṃ kiñcidabhimānātpatitā mama ।
uktō bhavatyā kōpēna yatrāsya lulitaṃ manaḥ ॥
I hope you have not spoken harshly to my father
from the self-indulgence his love gives you,
or in anger, wounding his feelings?
2.18.18 ஏததாசக்ஷ்வ மே தேவி தத்த்வேந பரிப்ருச்சத: ।
கிம் நிமித்தமபூர்வோயம் விகாரோ மநுஜாதிபே ॥
ētadācakṣva mē dēvi tattvēna paripṛcchataḥ ।
kiṃ nimittamapūrvōyaṃ vikārō manujādhipē ॥
I ask you, O queen, tell me everything as it is!
What is the reason for the ruler of the people
to be disoriented like this, as never before?
2.18.19 ஏவமுக்தா து கைகேயீ ராகவேண மஹாத்மநா ।
உவாசேதம் ஸுநிர்லஜ்ஜா த்ருஷ்டமாத்மஹிதம் வச: ॥
ēvamuktā tu kaikēyī rāghavēṇa mahātmanā ।
uvācēdaṃ sunirlajjā dhṛṣṭamātmahitaṃ vacaḥ ॥
To that question of Rāghava, the Mahatma,
Kaikēyee had the face to say these selfish words,
without the slightest shame:
2.18.20 ந ராஜா குபிதோ ராம! வ்யஸநம் நாஸ்ய கிஞ்சந ।
கிஞ்சிந்மநோகதம்த்வஸ்ய த்வத்பயாந்நாபிபாஷதே ॥
na rājā kupitō rāma! vyasanaṃ nāsya kiñcana ।
kiñcinmanōgataṃtvasya tvadbhayānnābhibhāṣatē ॥
O Rāma! Neither the king is angry
nor is he suffering from any pain!
He is just scared to say what is on his mind to you!
2.18.21 ப்ரியம் த்வாமப்ரியம் வக்தும் வாணீ நாஸ்யோபவர்ததே ।
ததவஸ்யம் த்வயா கார்யம் யதநேநாஸ்ருதம் மம ॥
priyaṃ tvāmapriyaṃ vaktuṃ vāṇī nāsyōpavartatē ।
tadavaṡyaṃ tvayā kāryaṃ yadanēnāṡrutaṃ mama ॥
His tongue is not cooperating to spell out
words that are unkind to a person whom he loves.
But you must do without fail what he has promised to me.
2.18.22 ஏஷ மஹ்யம் வரம் தத்த்வா புரா மாமபிபூஜ்ய ச ।
ஸ பஸ்சாத்தப்யதே ராஜா யதாऽந்ய: ப்ராக்ருதஸ்ததா ॥
ēṣa mahyaṃ varaṃ dattvā purā māmabhipūjya ca ।
sa paṡcāttapyatē rājā yathā'nyaḥ prākṛtastathā ॥
This king, out of great regard, had given me a boon in the past.
But now he repents for it like any other common creature.
2.18.23 அதிஸ்ருஜ்ய ததாநீதி வரம் மம விஸாம்பதி: ।
ஸ நிரர்தம் கதஜலே ஸேதும் பந்திதுமிச்சதி ॥
atisṛjya dadānīti varaṃ mama viṡāṃpatiḥ ।
sa nirardhaṃ gatajalē sētuṃ bandhitumicchati ॥
Having promised me the boon, the king now futilely attempts
to build a dam after the water has drained off.
2.18.24 தர்மமூலமிதம் ராம! விதிதம் ச ஸதாமபி ।
தத்ஸத்யம் ந த்யஜேத்ராஜா குபிதஸ்த்வத்க்ருதே யதா ॥
dharmamūlamidaṃ rāma! viditaṃ ca satāmapi ।
tatsatyaṃ na tyajēdrājā kupitastvatkṛtē yathā ॥
Keeping one’s word is the cornerstone of Dharma
as any sane minded person can tell.
I hope this angry king would not
renege on his word because of you.
2.18.25 யதி தத்வக்ஷ்யதே ராஜா ஸுபம் வா யதி வாऽஸுபம் ।
கரிஷ்யஸி ததஸ்ஸர்வமாக்யாஸ்யாமி புநஸ்த்வஹம் ॥
yadi tadvakṣyatē rājā ṡubhaṃ vā yadi vā'ṡubham ।
kariṣyasi tatassarvamākhyāsyāmi punastvaham ॥
If you are ready to do whatever the king would say,
regardless of it being good or bad for you,
I shall tell you everything in detail.
2.18.26 யதி த்வபிஹிதம் ராஜ்ஞா த்வயி தந்ந விபத்ஸ்யதே ।
ததோऽஹமபிதாஸ்யாமி ந ஹ்யேஷ த்வயி வக்ஷ்யதி ॥
yadi tvabhihitaṃ rājñā tvayi tanna vipatsyatē ।
tatō'hamabhidhāsyāmi na hyēṣa tvayi vakṣyati ॥
If what the king would say will not go in vain,
I shall tell it to you, for he would not be able to!
2.18.27 ஏதத்து வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா கைகேய்யா ஸமுதாஹ்ருதம் ।
உவாச வ்யதிதோ ராமஸ்தாம் தேவீம் ந்ருபஸந்நிதௌ ॥
ētattu vacanaṃ ṡrutvā kaikēyyā samudāhṛtam ।
uvāca vyathitō rāmastāṃ dēvīṃ nṛpasannidhau ॥
Hearing those well laid out words of Kaikēyee,
the troubled Rāma responded to that lady,
in the presence of the king, saying:
2.18.28-29 அஹோ திங்நார்ஹஸே தேவி வக்தும் மாமீத்ருஸம் வச: ।
அஹம் ஹி வசநாத்ராஜ்ஞ: பதேயமபி பாவகே ॥
பக்ஷ்யேயம் விஷம் தீக்ஷ்ணம் மஜ்ஜேயமபி சார்ணவே ।
நியுக்தோ குருணா பித்ரா ந்ருபேண ச ஹிதேந ச ॥
ahō dhiṅnārhasē dēvi vaktuṃ māmīdṛṡaṃ vacaḥ ।
ahaṃ hi vacanādrājñaḥ patēyamapi pāvakē ॥
bhakṣyēyaṃ viṣaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ majjēyamapi cārṇavē ।
niyuktō guruṇā pitrā nṛpēṇa ca hitēna ca ॥
What a pity, O Queen, that you speak like this!
I will even jump into fire to honor the word of the king!
I will consume deadly poison or drown in the ocean,
if I were commanded to do so by the king,
who is my respected father and well wisher!
2.18.30 தத்ப்ரூஹி வசநம் தேவி ராஜ்ஞோ யதபிகாங்க்ஷிதம் ।
கரிஷ்யே ப்ரதிஜாநே ச ராமோ த்விர்நாபிபாஷதே ॥
tadbrūhi vacanaṃ dēvi rājñō yadabhikāṅkṣitam ।
kariṣyē pratijānē ca rāmō dvirnābhibhāṣatē ॥
Hence, O queen, please tell me what the king wants!
I promise to fulfill it! Rāma does not speak in two voices!
2.18.31 தமார்ஜவஸமாயுக்தமநார்யா ஸத்யவாதிநம் ।
உவாச ராமம் கைகேயீ வசநம் ப்ருஸதாருணம் ॥
tamārjavasamāyuktamanāryā satyavādinam ।
uvāca rāmaṃ kaikēyī vacanaṃ bhṛṡadāruṇam ॥
The ignoble Kaikēyee then spoke these
utterly ruthless words to Rāma,
who was honest to the core and
unwavering adherent of truth:
2.18.32 புரா தைவாஸுரே யுத்தே பித்ரா தே மம ராகவ ।
ரக்ஷிதேந வரௌ தத்தௌ ஸஸல்யேந மஹாரணே ॥
purā daivāsurē yuddhē pitrā tē mama rāghava ।
rakṣitēna varau dattau saṡalyēna mahāraṇē ॥
Once upon a time, O Rāghava,
in the dreadful battle between Dēvas and Asuras,
your father, who was badly hit by arrows
was protected by me and he then gave me two boons!
2.18.33 தத்ர மே யாசிதோ ராஜா பரதஸ்யாபிஷேசநம் ।
கமநம் தண்டகாரண்யே தவ சாத்யைவ ராகவ ॥
tatra mē yācitō rājā bharatasyābhiṣēcanam ।
gamanaṃ daṇḍakāraṇyē tava cādyaiva rāghava ॥
Hence, O Rāghava, I asked the king for
the consecration of Bharata
and your exile to the forest of Daṇḍaka right away!
2.18.34 யதி ஸத்யப்ரதிஜ்ஞம் த்வம் பிதரம் கர்துமிச்சஸி ।
ஆத்மாநம் ச நரஸ்ரேஷ்ட! மம வாக்யமிதம் ஸ்ருணு ॥
yadi satyapratijñaṃ tvaṃ pitaraṃ kartumicchasi ।
ātmānaṃ ca naraṡrēṣṭha! mama vākyamidaṃ ṡṛṇu ॥
If you want to make yourself and your father
the keepers of your words,
O best among men, listen to my words:
2.18.35 ஸந்நிதேஸே பிதுஸ்திஷ்ட யதா தேந ப்ரதிஸ்ருதம் ।
த்வயாऽரண்யம் ப்ரவேஷ்டவ்யம் நவ வர்ஷாணி பஞ்ச ச ॥
sannidēṡē pitustiṣṭha yathā tēna pratiṡrutam ।
tvayā'raṇyaṃ pravēṣṭavyaṃ nava varṣāṇi pañca ca ॥
Abide by your father's command!
In accordance with his promise,
go to the forest for nine and five years!
2.18.36 பரதஸ்த்வபிஷிச்யேத யதேததபிஷேசநம் ।
த்வதர்தே விஹிதம் ராஜ்ஞா தேந ஸர்வேண ராகவ! ॥
bharatastvabhiṣicyēta yadētadabhiṣēcanam ।
tvadarthē vihitaṃ rājñā tēna sarvēṇa rāghava! ॥
May everything that is arranged by the king
for your consecration be used for the consecration of Bharata!
2.18.37 ஸப்த ஸப்த ச வர்ஷாணி தண்டகாரண்யமாஸ்ரித: ।
அபிஷேகமிமம் த்யத்த்வா ஜடாஜிநதரோ வஸ ॥
sapta sapta ca varṣāṇi daṇḍakāraṇyamāṡritaḥ ।
abhiṣēkamimaṃ tyattvā jaṭājinadharō vasa ॥
Forsaking this consecration,
may you live in Daṇḍaka forest for seven and seven years
with hair unkempt and clad in deer-skin!
2.18.38 பரத: கோஸலபுரே ப்ரஸாஸ்து வஸுதாமிமாம் ।
நாநாரத்ந ஸமாகீர்ணாம் ஸவாஜிரதகுஞ்ஜராம் ॥
bharataḥ kōsalapurē praṡāstu vasudhāmimām ।
nānāratna samākīrṇāṃ savājirathakuñjarām ॥
May Bharata rule this earth
that is splendid with all varieties of gems
and full of horses, chariots and elephants,
from this city of the kingdom of Kōsala!
2.18.39 ஏதேந த்வாம் நரேந்த்ரோऽயம் காருண்யேந ஸமாப்லுத: ।
ஸோகஸம்க்லிஷ்ட வதநோ ந ஸக்நோதி நிரீக்ஷிதும் ॥
ētēna tvāṃ narēndrō'yaṃ kāruṇyēna samāplutaḥ ।
ṡōkasaṃkliṣṭa vadanō na ṡaknōti nirīkṣitum ॥
That is the reason why this lord of peoples
is feeling pity for you
and his face is filled with grief
and he is unable to look at you straight!
2.18.40 ஏதத்குரு நரேந்த்ரஸ்ய வசநம் ரகுநந்தந ।
ஸத்யேந மஹதா ராம தாரயஸ்வ நரேஸ்வரம் ॥
ētatkuru narēndrasya vacanaṃ raghunandana ।
satyēna mahatā rāma tārayasva narēṡvaram ॥
Carry out the King’s promise, O scion of the Raghu dynasty,
and help the lord of men, O Rāma, to redeem himself
by such exemplary adherence to truth!
2.18.41 இதீவ தஸ்யாம் பருஷம் வதந்த்யாம்
ந சைவ ராம: ப்ரவிவேஸ ஸோகம் ।
ப்ரவிவ்யதே சாபி மஹாநுபாவோ
ராஜா து புத்ரவ்யஸநாபிதப்த: ॥
itīva tasyāṃ paruṣaṃ vadantyāṃ
na caiva rāmaḥ pravivēṡa ṡōkam ।
pravivyathē cāpi mahānubhāvō
rājā tu putravyasanābhitaptaḥ ॥
Such terrible words uttered by her
could not make Rāma succumb to any sort of grief,
but the noble king suffered a lot,
agonized by the misfortune that had befallen on his son.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே அஷ்டாதஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē aṣṭādaṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the eighteenth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.

2.18.4 ததபூர்வம் நரபதேர்த்ருஷ்ட்வா ரூபம் பயாவஹம் ।
ராமோऽபி பயமாபந்ந: பதா ஸ்ப்ருஷ்ட்வேவ பந்நகம் ॥
tadapūrvaṃ narapatērdṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ bhayāvaham ।
rāmō'pi bhayamāpannaḥ padā spṛṣṭvēva pannagam ॥
Having never seen him in such a terrible shape,
Rāma was seized with fear,
like one who had stepped on a serpent.
2.18.5-6 இந்த்ரியைரப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டைஸ்தம் ஸோகஸந்தாபகர்ஸிதம் ।
நிஸ்ஸ்வஸந்தம் மஹாராஜம் வ்யதிதாகுலசேதஸம் ॥
ஊர்மிமாலிநமக்ஷோப்யம் க்ஷுப்யந்தமிவ ஸாகரம் ।
உபப்லுதமிவாதித்யமுக்தாந்ருதம்ருஷிம் யதா ॥
indriyairaprahṛṣṭaistaṃ ṡōkasantāpakarṡitam ।
niṡṡvasantaṃ mahārājaṃ vyathitākulacētasam ॥
ūrmimālinamakṣōbhyaṃ kṣubhyantamiva sāgaram ।
upaplutamivādityamuktānṛtamṛṣiṃ yathā ॥
There is no sign of joy in any of his senses
of that king of kings.
He was wilting under the fire of grief and sighing deeply.
His mind was perturbed by immense grief.
Unshakable ocean that he was,
he then convulsed like a ocean with a series of tides.
He was like the sun eclipsed and
like a Ṛshi who had uttered a lie.
2.18.7 அசிந்த்யகல்பம் ஹி பிதுஸ்தம் ஸோகமுபதாரயந் ।
பபூவ ஸம்ரப்ததர ஸ்ஸமுத்ர இவ பர்வணி ॥
acintyakalpaṃ hi pitustaṃ ṡōkamupadhārayan ।
babhūva saṃrabdhatara ssamudra iva parvaṇi ॥
Thinking of that unfathomable grief of his father,
he became agitated like the ocean on a full moon day.
2.18.8 சிந்தயாமாஸ ச ததா ராம: பித்ருஹிதே ரத: ।
கிம் ஸ்விதத்யைவ ந்ருபதிர்ந மாம் ப்ரத்யபிநந்ததி ॥
cintayāmāsa ca tadā rāmaḥ pitṛhitē rataḥ ।
kiṃ svidadyaiva nṛpatirna māṃ pratyabhinandati ॥
Rāma, who wished all well for his father,
was at his wit’s end, in spite of being as discerning as he was,
as to why the king did not greet him with delight as usual!
2.18.9 அந்யதா மாம் பிதா த்ருஷ்ட்வா குபிதோऽபி ப்ரஸீததி ।
தஸ்ய மாமத்ய ஸம்ப்ரேக்ஷ்ய கிமாயாஸ: ப்ரவர்ததே ॥
anyadā māṃ pitā dṛṣṭvā kupitō'pi prasīdati ।
tasya māmadya saṃprēkṣya kimāyāsaḥ pravartatē ॥
“He used to regain his good humor
even if he was angry, on seeing me.
Why is he feeling so sad seeing me today?”
2.18.10 ஸ தீந இவ ஸோகார்தோ விஷண்ணவதநத்யுதி: ।
கைகேயீமபிவாத்யைவ ராமோ வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
sa dīna iva ṡōkārtō viṣaṇṇavadanadyutiḥ ।
kaikēyīmabhivādyaiva rāmō vacanamabravīt ॥
Racked by grief, and feeling miserable,
Rāma asked Kaikēyee with a sad, lack-luster face
as he made his prostrations to her:
2.18.11 கச்சிந்மயா நாபராத்தமஜ்ஞாநாத்யேந மே பிதா ।
குபிதஸ்தந்மமாசக்ஷ்வ த்வம் சைவைநம் ப்ரஸாதய ॥
kaccinmayā nāparāddhamajñānādyēna mē pitā ।
kupitastanmamācakṣva tvaṃ caivainaṃ prasādaya ॥
Have I unwittingly offended my father?
Please tell me why he is angry with me!
You alone can make him become graceful towards me!
2.18.12 அப்ரஸந்நமநா: கிந்நு ஸதா மாம் ப்ரதி வத்ஸல: ।
விவர்ணவதநோ தீநோ ந ஹி மாமபிபாஷதே ॥
aprasannamanāḥ kinnu sadā māṃ prati vatsalaḥ ।
vivarṇavadanō dīnō na hi māmabhibhāṣatē ॥
He is always affectionate towards me.
Why is he unhappy? Why is he not speaking?
Why is he so depressed? Why is his face so pale?
2.18.13 ஸரீரோ மாநஸோ வாபி கச்சிதேநம் ந பாததே ।
ஸந்தாபோவாऽபிதாபோ வா துர்லபம் ஹி ஸதா ஸுகம் ॥
ṡarīrō mānasō vāpi kaccidēnaṃ na bādhatē ।
santāpōvā'bhitāpō vā durlabhaṃ hi sadā sukham ॥
Is he suffering from bodily pain or mental anguish?
For it is not given to anyone to be all right all the time!
2.18.14 கச்சிந்ந கிஞ்சித்பரதே குமாரே ப்ரியதர்ஸநே ।
ஸத்ருக்நே வா மஹாஸத்த்வே மாத்ரூணாம் வா மமாஸுபம் ॥
kaccinna kiñcidbharatē kumārē priyadarṡanē ।
ṡatrughnē vā mahāsattvē mātrūṇāṃ vā mamāṡubham ॥
I hope no misfortune has befallen on the pleasing Bharata
or on the mighty strong Ṡatrughna or on any of my mothers!
2.18.15 அதோஷயந்மஹாராஜமகுர்வந்வா பிதுர்வச: ।
முஹூர்தமபி நேச்சேயம் ஜீவிதும் குபிதே ந்ருபே ॥
atōṣayanmahārājamakurvanvā piturvacaḥ ।
muhūrtamapi nēcchēyaṃ jīvituṃ kupitē nṛpē ॥
If I were to make the lord of kings unhappy,
or were to not fulfill the word of my father,
or even to gain the displeasure of the king,
I would not wish to live even for a moment!
2.18.16 யதோமூலம் நர: பஸ்யேத்ப்ராதுர்பாவமிஹாத்மந: ।
கதம் தஸ்மிந்நவர்தேத ப்ரத்யக்ஷே ஸதி தைவதே ॥
yatōmūlaṃ naraḥ paṡyētprādurbhāvamihātmanaḥ ।
kathaṃ tasminnavartēta pratyakṣē sati daivatē ॥
How else can any son be with one’s father
who is the very source of one’s own existence
and who is like a god right in front of the eyes?
2.18.17 கச்சித்தே பருஷம் கிஞ்சிதபிமாநாத்பதிதா மம ।
உக்தோ பவத்யா கோபேந யத்ராஸ்ய லுலிதம் மந: ॥
kaccittē paruṣaṃ kiñcidabhimānātpatitā mama ।
uktō bhavatyā kōpēna yatrāsya lulitaṃ manaḥ ॥
I hope you have not spoken harshly to my father
from the self-indulgence his love gives you,
or in anger, wounding his feelings?
2.18.18 ஏததாசக்ஷ்வ மே தேவி தத்த்வேந பரிப்ருச்சத: ।
கிம் நிமித்தமபூர்வோயம் விகாரோ மநுஜாதிபே ॥
ētadācakṣva mē dēvi tattvēna paripṛcchataḥ ।
kiṃ nimittamapūrvōyaṃ vikārō manujādhipē ॥
I ask you, O queen, tell me everything as it is!
What is the reason for the ruler of the people
to be disoriented like this, as never before?
2.18.19 ஏவமுக்தா து கைகேயீ ராகவேண மஹாத்மநா ।
உவாசேதம் ஸுநிர்லஜ்ஜா த்ருஷ்டமாத்மஹிதம் வச: ॥
ēvamuktā tu kaikēyī rāghavēṇa mahātmanā ।
uvācēdaṃ sunirlajjā dhṛṣṭamātmahitaṃ vacaḥ ॥
To that question of Rāghava, the Mahatma,
Kaikēyee had the face to say these selfish words,
without the slightest shame:
2.18.20 ந ராஜா குபிதோ ராம! வ்யஸநம் நாஸ்ய கிஞ்சந ।
கிஞ்சிந்மநோகதம்த்வஸ்ய த்வத்பயாந்நாபிபாஷதே ॥
na rājā kupitō rāma! vyasanaṃ nāsya kiñcana ।
kiñcinmanōgataṃtvasya tvadbhayānnābhibhāṣatē ॥
O Rāma! Neither the king is angry
nor is he suffering from any pain!
He is just scared to say what is on his mind to you!
2.18.21 ப்ரியம் த்வாமப்ரியம் வக்தும் வாணீ நாஸ்யோபவர்ததே ।
ததவஸ்யம் த்வயா கார்யம் யதநேநாஸ்ருதம் மம ॥
priyaṃ tvāmapriyaṃ vaktuṃ vāṇī nāsyōpavartatē ।
tadavaṡyaṃ tvayā kāryaṃ yadanēnāṡrutaṃ mama ॥
His tongue is not cooperating to spell out
words that are unkind to a person whom he loves.
But you must do without fail what he has promised to me.
2.18.22 ஏஷ மஹ்யம் வரம் தத்த்வா புரா மாமபிபூஜ்ய ச ।
ஸ பஸ்சாத்தப்யதே ராஜா யதாऽந்ய: ப்ராக்ருதஸ்ததா ॥
ēṣa mahyaṃ varaṃ dattvā purā māmabhipūjya ca ।
sa paṡcāttapyatē rājā yathā'nyaḥ prākṛtastathā ॥
This king, out of great regard, had given me a boon in the past.
But now he repents for it like any other common creature.
2.18.23 அதிஸ்ருஜ்ய ததாநீதி வரம் மம விஸாம்பதி: ।
ஸ நிரர்தம் கதஜலே ஸேதும் பந்திதுமிச்சதி ॥
atisṛjya dadānīti varaṃ mama viṡāṃpatiḥ ।
sa nirardhaṃ gatajalē sētuṃ bandhitumicchati ॥
Having promised me the boon, the king now futilely attempts
to build a dam after the water has drained off.
2.18.24 தர்மமூலமிதம் ராம! விதிதம் ச ஸதாமபி ।
தத்ஸத்யம் ந த்யஜேத்ராஜா குபிதஸ்த்வத்க்ருதே யதா ॥
dharmamūlamidaṃ rāma! viditaṃ ca satāmapi ।
tatsatyaṃ na tyajēdrājā kupitastvatkṛtē yathā ॥
Keeping one’s word is the cornerstone of Dharma
as any sane minded person can tell.
I hope this angry king would not
renege on his word because of you.
2.18.25 யதி தத்வக்ஷ்யதே ராஜா ஸுபம் வா யதி வாऽஸுபம் ।
கரிஷ்யஸி ததஸ்ஸர்வமாக்யாஸ்யாமி புநஸ்த்வஹம் ॥
yadi tadvakṣyatē rājā ṡubhaṃ vā yadi vā'ṡubham ।
kariṣyasi tatassarvamākhyāsyāmi punastvaham ॥
If you are ready to do whatever the king would say,
regardless of it being good or bad for you,
I shall tell you everything in detail.
2.18.26 யதி த்வபிஹிதம் ராஜ்ஞா த்வயி தந்ந விபத்ஸ்யதே ।
ததோऽஹமபிதாஸ்யாமி ந ஹ்யேஷ த்வயி வக்ஷ்யதி ॥
yadi tvabhihitaṃ rājñā tvayi tanna vipatsyatē ।
tatō'hamabhidhāsyāmi na hyēṣa tvayi vakṣyati ॥
If what the king would say will not go in vain,
I shall tell it to you, for he would not be able to!
2.18.27 ஏதத்து வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா கைகேய்யா ஸமுதாஹ்ருதம் ।
உவாச வ்யதிதோ ராமஸ்தாம் தேவீம் ந்ருபஸந்நிதௌ ॥
ētattu vacanaṃ ṡrutvā kaikēyyā samudāhṛtam ।
uvāca vyathitō rāmastāṃ dēvīṃ nṛpasannidhau ॥
Hearing those well laid out words of Kaikēyee,
the troubled Rāma responded to that lady,
in the presence of the king, saying:
2.18.28-29 அஹோ திங்நார்ஹஸே தேவி வக்தும் மாமீத்ருஸம் வச: ।
அஹம் ஹி வசநாத்ராஜ்ஞ: பதேயமபி பாவகே ॥
பக்ஷ்யேயம் விஷம் தீக்ஷ்ணம் மஜ்ஜேயமபி சார்ணவே ।
நியுக்தோ குருணா பித்ரா ந்ருபேண ச ஹிதேந ச ॥
ahō dhiṅnārhasē dēvi vaktuṃ māmīdṛṡaṃ vacaḥ ।
ahaṃ hi vacanādrājñaḥ patēyamapi pāvakē ॥
bhakṣyēyaṃ viṣaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ majjēyamapi cārṇavē ।
niyuktō guruṇā pitrā nṛpēṇa ca hitēna ca ॥
What a pity, O Queen, that you speak like this!
I will even jump into fire to honor the word of the king!
I will consume deadly poison or drown in the ocean,
if I were commanded to do so by the king,
who is my respected father and well wisher!
2.18.30 தத்ப்ரூஹி வசநம் தேவி ராஜ்ஞோ யதபிகாங்க்ஷிதம் ।
கரிஷ்யே ப்ரதிஜாநே ச ராமோ த்விர்நாபிபாஷதே ॥
tadbrūhi vacanaṃ dēvi rājñō yadabhikāṅkṣitam ।
kariṣyē pratijānē ca rāmō dvirnābhibhāṣatē ॥
Hence, O queen, please tell me what the king wants!
I promise to fulfill it! Rāma does not speak in two voices!
2.18.31 தமார்ஜவஸமாயுக்தமநார்யா ஸத்யவாதிநம் ।
உவாச ராமம் கைகேயீ வசநம் ப்ருஸதாருணம் ॥
tamārjavasamāyuktamanāryā satyavādinam ।
uvāca rāmaṃ kaikēyī vacanaṃ bhṛṡadāruṇam ॥
The ignoble Kaikēyee then spoke these
utterly ruthless words to Rāma,
who was honest to the core and
unwavering adherent of truth:
2.18.32 புரா தைவாஸுரே யுத்தே பித்ரா தே மம ராகவ ।
ரக்ஷிதேந வரௌ தத்தௌ ஸஸல்யேந மஹாரணே ॥
purā daivāsurē yuddhē pitrā tē mama rāghava ।
rakṣitēna varau dattau saṡalyēna mahāraṇē ॥
Once upon a time, O Rāghava,
in the dreadful battle between Dēvas and Asuras,
your father, who was badly hit by arrows
was protected by me and he then gave me two boons!
2.18.33 தத்ர மே யாசிதோ ராஜா பரதஸ்யாபிஷேசநம் ।
கமநம் தண்டகாரண்யே தவ சாத்யைவ ராகவ ॥
tatra mē yācitō rājā bharatasyābhiṣēcanam ।
gamanaṃ daṇḍakāraṇyē tava cādyaiva rāghava ॥
Hence, O Rāghava, I asked the king for
the consecration of Bharata
and your exile to the forest of Daṇḍaka right away!
2.18.34 யதி ஸத்யப்ரதிஜ்ஞம் த்வம் பிதரம் கர்துமிச்சஸி ।
ஆத்மாநம் ச நரஸ்ரேஷ்ட! மம வாக்யமிதம் ஸ்ருணு ॥
yadi satyapratijñaṃ tvaṃ pitaraṃ kartumicchasi ।
ātmānaṃ ca naraṡrēṣṭha! mama vākyamidaṃ ṡṛṇu ॥
If you want to make yourself and your father
the keepers of your words,
O best among men, listen to my words:
2.18.35 ஸந்நிதேஸே பிதுஸ்திஷ்ட யதா தேந ப்ரதிஸ்ருதம் ।
த்வயாऽரண்யம் ப்ரவேஷ்டவ்யம் நவ வர்ஷாணி பஞ்ச ச ॥
sannidēṡē pitustiṣṭha yathā tēna pratiṡrutam ।
tvayā'raṇyaṃ pravēṣṭavyaṃ nava varṣāṇi pañca ca ॥
Abide by your father's command!
In accordance with his promise,
go to the forest for nine and five years!
2.18.36 பரதஸ்த்வபிஷிச்யேத யதேததபிஷேசநம் ।
த்வதர்தே விஹிதம் ராஜ்ஞா தேந ஸர்வேண ராகவ! ॥
bharatastvabhiṣicyēta yadētadabhiṣēcanam ।
tvadarthē vihitaṃ rājñā tēna sarvēṇa rāghava! ॥
May everything that is arranged by the king
for your consecration be used for the consecration of Bharata!
2.18.37 ஸப்த ஸப்த ச வர்ஷாணி தண்டகாரண்யமாஸ்ரித: ।
அபிஷேகமிமம் த்யத்த்வா ஜடாஜிநதரோ வஸ ॥
sapta sapta ca varṣāṇi daṇḍakāraṇyamāṡritaḥ ।
abhiṣēkamimaṃ tyattvā jaṭājinadharō vasa ॥
Forsaking this consecration,
may you live in Daṇḍaka forest for seven and seven years
with hair unkempt and clad in deer-skin!
2.18.38 பரத: கோஸலபுரே ப்ரஸாஸ்து வஸுதாமிமாம் ।
நாநாரத்ந ஸமாகீர்ணாம் ஸவாஜிரதகுஞ்ஜராம் ॥
bharataḥ kōsalapurē praṡāstu vasudhāmimām ।
nānāratna samākīrṇāṃ savājirathakuñjarām ॥
May Bharata rule this earth
that is splendid with all varieties of gems
and full of horses, chariots and elephants,
from this city of the kingdom of Kōsala!
2.18.39 ஏதேந த்வாம் நரேந்த்ரோऽயம் காருண்யேந ஸமாப்லுத: ।
ஸோகஸம்க்லிஷ்ட வதநோ ந ஸக்நோதி நிரீக்ஷிதும் ॥
ētēna tvāṃ narēndrō'yaṃ kāruṇyēna samāplutaḥ ।
ṡōkasaṃkliṣṭa vadanō na ṡaknōti nirīkṣitum ॥
That is the reason why this lord of peoples
is feeling pity for you
and his face is filled with grief
and he is unable to look at you straight!
2.18.40 ஏதத்குரு நரேந்த்ரஸ்ய வசநம் ரகுநந்தந ।
ஸத்யேந மஹதா ராம தாரயஸ்வ நரேஸ்வரம் ॥
ētatkuru narēndrasya vacanaṃ raghunandana ।
satyēna mahatā rāma tārayasva narēṡvaram ॥
Carry out the King’s promise, O scion of the Raghu dynasty,
and help the lord of men, O Rāma, to redeem himself
by such exemplary adherence to truth!
2.18.41 இதீவ தஸ்யாம் பருஷம் வதந்த்யாம்
ந சைவ ராம: ப்ரவிவேஸ ஸோகம் ।
ப்ரவிவ்யதே சாபி மஹாநுபாவோ
ராஜா து புத்ரவ்யஸநாபிதப்த: ॥
itīva tasyāṃ paruṣaṃ vadantyāṃ
na caiva rāmaḥ pravivēṡa ṡōkam ।
pravivyathē cāpi mahānubhāvō
rājā tu putravyasanābhitaptaḥ ॥
Such terrible words uttered by her
could not make Rāma succumb to any sort of grief,
but the noble king suffered a lot,
agonized by the misfortune that had befallen on his son.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே அஷ்டாதஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē aṣṭādaṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the eighteenth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
