    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 22
    In the previous Sarga, Rāma reasoned with Kousalyā why it is the right thing to do for him to go to Vana.


    In this Sarga, Rāma addresses the sad and angry Lakshmaṇa, explaining why such a sudden reversal could only be an act of god and Kaikēyee is not the one to be blamed for it. He urges Lakshmaṇa to unwind the preparations for the consecration and to reconcile with the reality just as he did.


    This Sarga is, perhaps, the most pivotal Sarga in Rāmāyaṇa. It establishes the character of Rāma. It conveys the central message of all traditions of the world. Bhagavad Geeta says that we only have the privilege of action and not the power over results. Christianity says that God has a purpose behind everything. Islam says everything happens according to the will of God.


    This Sarga takes it one step further and provides additional clarification. It provides a practical example, rather than the abstract message. It says that we should not blame God for everything. Rather, we should take the responsibility for our actions. But, when something happens all of a sudden and in a completely unexpected manner, it must be reconciled as nothing but an act of god. We should not find fault with the mere mortals who happen to be involved in the process.
    2.22.1-2 அத தம் வ்யதயா தீநம் ஸவிஸேஷமமர்ஷிதம் ।
    ஸ்வஸந்தமிவ நாகேந்த்ரம் ரோஷவிஸ்பாரிதேக்ஷணம் ॥
    ஆஸாத்ய ராமஸ்ஸௌமித்ரிம் ஸுஹ்ருதம் ப்ராதரம் ப்ரியம் ।
    உவாசேதம் ஸ தைர்யேண தாரயந்ஸத்த்வமாத்மவாந் ॥
    atha taṃ vyathayā dīnaṃ saviṡēṣamamarṣitam ।
    ṡvasantamiva nāgēndraṃ rōṣavisphāritēkṣaṇam ॥
    āsādya rāmassaumitriṃ suhṛdaṃ bhrātaraṃ priyam ।
    uvācēdaṃ sa dhairyēṇa dhārayansattvamātmavān ॥
    The composed Rāma, holding strongly on to his resolve,
    then approached and spoke to the son of Sumitrā,
    his loving and well meaning brother,
    whose eyes were red and bulged in indignation,
    who looked pitiful out of distress on the one hand,
    and was hissing like a cobra with anger on the other hand:
    2.22.3-4 நிக்ருஹ்ய ரோஷம் ஸோகம் ச தைர்யமாஸ்ரித்ய கேவலம் ।
    அவமாநம் நிரஸ்யேமம் க்ருஹீத்வா ஹர்ஷமுத்தமம் ॥
    உபக்லுப்தம் ஹி யத்கிஞ்சிதபிஷேகார்தமத்ய மே ।
    ஸர்வம் விஸர்ஜய க்ஷிப்ரம் குரு கார்யம் நிரத்யயம் ॥
    nigṛhya rōṣaṃ ṡōkaṃ ca dhairyamāṡritya kēvalam ।
    avamānaṃ nirasyēmaṃ gṛhītvā harṣamuttamam ॥
    upakluptaṃ hi yatkińcidabhiṣēkārthamadya mē ।
    sarvaṃ visarjaya kṣipraṃ kuru kāryaṃ niratyayam ॥
    Please hold your anger and grief.
    Call only upon your strength and courage.
    Put this insult behind and become cheerful.
    Forget about all the preparations done for my consecration.
    Focus immediately on what
    should be done next and make it painless.
    2.22.5 ஸௌமித்ரே! யோऽபிஷேகார்தே மம ஸம்பார ஸம்ப்ரம: ।
    அபிஷேகநிவ்ருத்த்யர்தே ஸோऽஸ்து ஸம்பாரஸம்ப்ரம: ॥
    saumitrē! yō'bhiṣēkārthē mama sambhāra sambhramaḥ ।
    abhiṣēkanivṛttyarthē sō'stu saṃbhārasambhramaḥ ॥
    O son of Sumitrā! Divert your enthusiasm now,
    from making the arrangements for my consecration
    to preparing everything for stopping the consecration!
    2.22.6 யஸ்யா மதபிஷேகார்தே மாநஸம் பரிதப்யதே ।
    மாதா மே ஸா யதா ந ஸ்யாத்ஸவிஸங்கா ததா குரு ॥
    yasyā madabhiṣēkārthē mānasaṃ paritapyatē ।
    mātā mē sā yathā na syātsaviṡaṅkā tathā kuru ॥
    Do it in such a way that mother Kaikēyee,
    who is worried about my getting consecrated
    would not doubt that anything would happen
    that would be contrary to her wish!
    2.22.7 தஸ்யாஸ்ஸங்காமயம் து:கம் முஹூர்தமபி நோத்ஸஹே ।
    மநஸி ப்ரதிஸம்ஜாதம் ஸௌமித்ரேऽஹமுபேக்ஷிதும் ॥
    tasyāṡṡaṅkāmayaṃ duḥkhaṃ muhūrtamapi nōtsahē ।
    manasi pratisaṃjātaṃ saumitrē'hamupēkṣitum ॥
    O son of Sumitrā! I will not take any distress
    of hers born out of such doubt, lightly,
    even if it happens to be only for a moment.
    2.22.8 ந புத்திபூர்வம் நாபுத்தம் ஸ்மராமீஹ கதாசந ।
    மாத௄ணாம் வா பிதுர்வாऽஹம் க்ருதமல்பம் ச விப்ரியம் ॥
    na buddhipūrvaṃ nābuddhaṃ smarāmīha kadācana ।
    māt ṇāṃ vā piturvā'haṃ kṛtamalpaṃ ca vipriyam ॥
    I cannot recall doing anything hurtful in the past,
    ever so slightly, to our father or to our mothers.
    2.22.9 ஸத்யஸ்ஸத்யாபிஸந்தஸ்ச நித்யம் ஸத்யபராக்ரம: ।
    பரலோகபயாத்பீதோ நிர்பயோऽஸ்து பிதா மம ॥
    satyassatyābhisandhaṡca nityaṃ satyaparākramaḥ ।
    paralōkabhayādbhītō nirbhayō'stu pitā mama ॥
    Let our father, who always adheres to truth
    and worthy of his repute for his prowess,
    continue to be a man of truth!
    Let he, who worries about a blemished afterlife
    be free of such worry!
    2.22.10 தஸ்யாऽபி ஹி பவேதஸ்மிந்கர்மண்யப்ரதிஸம்ஹ்ருதே ।
    ஸத்யம் நேதி மநஸ்தாபஸ்தஸ்ய தாபஸ்தபேச்ச மாம் ॥
    tasyā'pi hi bhavēdasminkarmaṇyapratisaṃhṛtē ।
    satyaṃ nēti manastāpastasya tāpastapēcca mām ॥
    He will be troubled, if his word
    in this matter of withdrawal (of the consecration)
    turns out to be untrue.
    And his worry will be worrisome for me.
    2.22.11 அபிஷேகவிதாநம் து தஸ்மாத்ஸம்ஹ்ருத்ய லக்ஷ்மண! ।
    அந்வகேவாஹமிச்சாமி வநம் கந்துமித:புந: ॥
    abhiṣēkavidhānaṃ tu tasmātsaṃhṛtya lakṣmaṇa! ।
    anvagēvāhamicchāmi vanaṃ gantumitaḥpunaḥ ॥
    O Lakshmaṇa! Hence I would like to stop
    the proceedings of consecration immediately
    and head to the Vana right from here!
    2.22.12 மம ப்ரவ்ராஜநாதத்ய க்ருதக்ருத்யா ந்ருபாத்மஜா ।
    ஸுதம் பரதமவ்யக்ரமபிஷேசயிதா தத: ॥
    mama pravrājanādadya kṛtakṛtyā nṛpātmajā ।
    sutaṃ bharatamavyagramabhiṣēcayitā tataḥ ॥
    With my departure, the daughter of the king (Kaikēyee)
    would have her wish fulfilled.
    She could then consecrate Bharata
    without any further apprehensions.
    2.22.13 மயி சீராஜிநதரே ஜடாமண்டலதாரிணி ।
    கதேऽரண்யம் ச கைகேய்யா பவிஷ்யதி மநஸ்ஸுகம் ॥
    mayi cīrājinadharē jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇi ।
    gatē'raṇyaṃ ca kaikēyyā bhaviṣyati manassukham ॥
    Only when I leave for the forest
    with matted locks, wearing deer skin,
    would Kaikēyee find peace in her heart.
    2.22.14 புத்தி: ப்ரணீதா யேநேயம் மநஸ்ச ஸுஸமாஹிதம் ।
    தம் து நார்ஹாமி ஸம்க்லேஷ்டும் ப்ரவ்ரஜிஷ்யாமி மா சிரம் ॥
    buddhiḥ praṇītā yēnēyaṃ manaṡca susamāhitam ।
    taṃ tu nārhāmi saṃklēṣṭuṃ pravrajiṣyāmi mā ciram ॥
    I should not bring any more misery on father, who,
    in the best of considerations, has made this decision.
    I shall go in exile without delay.
    2.22.15 க்ருதாந்தஸ்த்வேவ ஸௌமித்ரே! த்ரஷ்டவ்யோ மத்ப்ரவாஸநே ।
    ராஜ்யஸ்ய ச விதீர்ணஸ்ய புநரேவ நிவர்தநே ॥
    kṛtāntastvēva saumitrē! draṣṭavyō matpravāsanē ।
    rājyasya ca vitīrṇasya punarēva nivartanē ॥
    O son of Sumitrā!
    The reversal of the award of the kingdom as well as my exile
    must be seen as the will of Providence. It takes no less than Rāma to see the big picture!
    2.22.16 கைகேய்யா: ப்ரதிபத்திர்ஹி கதம் ஸ்யாந்மம பீடநே ।
    யதி பாவோ ந தைவோऽயம் க்ருதாந்தவிஹிதோ பவேத் ॥
    kaikēyyāḥ pratipattirhi kathaṃ syānmama pīḍanē ।
    yadi bhāvō na daivō'yaṃ kṛtāntavihitō bhavēt ॥
    If it were not an act of Providence,
    why would it occur to Kaikēyee
    to bring such difficulty upon me?
    2.22.17 ஜாநாஸி ஹி யதா ஸௌம்ய ந மாத்ருஷு மமாந்தரம் ।
    பூதபூர்வம் விஸேஷோ வா தஸ்யா மயி ஸுதே ऽபி வா ॥
    jānāsi hi yathā saumya na mātṛṣu mamāntaram ।
    bhūtapūrvaṃ viṡēṣō vā tasyā mayi sutē 'pi vā ॥
    My dear! You very well know that
    just as I made no differentiation among mothers,
    she never differentiated between me and her son in the past!
    2.22.18 ஸோऽபிஷேகநிவ்ருத்த்யர்தைப்ரவாஸார்தைஸ்ச துர்வசை: ।
    உக்ரைர்வாக்யைரஹம் தஸ்யா நாந்யத்தைவாத்ஸமர்தயே ॥
    sō'bhiṣēkanivṛttyarthaipravāsārthaiṡca durvacaiḥ ।
    ugrairvākyairahaṃ tasyā nānyaddaivātsamarthayē ॥
    I cannot see any reason other than an act of god
    behind her unspeakably harsh words and
    this exile and the cancellation of the consecration!
    2.22.19 கதம் ப்ரக்ருதிஸம்பந்நா ராஜபுத்ரீ ததாகுணா ।
    ப்ரூயாத்ஸா ப்ராக்ருதேவ ஸ்த்ரீ மத்பீடாம் பர்த்ருஸந்நிதௌ ॥
    kathaṃ prakṛtisampannā rājaputrī tathāguṇā ।
    brūyātsā prākṛtēva strī matpīḍāṃ bhartṛsannidhau ॥
    How else could such a noble minded woman, a daughter of a king,
    speak such harrowing words to me
    in the presence of her husband, like an ordinary woman?
    2.22.20 யதசிந்த்யந்து தத்தைவம் பூதேஷ்வபி ந விஹந்யதே ।
    வ்யக்தம் மயி ச தஸ்யாம் ச பதிதோ ஹி விபர்யய: ॥
    yadacintyantu taddaivaṃ bhūtēṣvapi na vihanyatē ।
    vyaktaṃ mayi ca tasyāṃ ca patitō hi viparyayaḥ ॥
    What Providence does is beyond our comprehension!
    Nothing can be done about what
    it has in store for any being.
    It is clear that both she and I are on the
    wrong side of Providence now!
    2.22.21 கஸ்சித்தைவேந ஸௌமித்ரே! யோத்துமுத்ஸஹதே புமாந் ।
    யஸ்ய ந க்ரஹணம் கிஞ்சித்கர்மணோऽந்யத்ர த்ருஸ்யதே ॥
    kaṡciddaivēna saumitrē! yōddhumutsahatē pumān ।
    yasya na grahaṇaṃ kińcitkarmaṇō'nyatra dṛṡyatē ॥
    O son of Sumitrā!
    Which man will try to fight against the will of God?
    The only way out of this is to abide by it!
    2.22.22 ஸுகது:கே பயக்ரோதௌ லாபாலாபௌ பவாபவௌ ।
    யச்ச கிஞ்சித்ததாபூதம் நநு தைவஸ்ய கர்ம தத் ॥
    sukhaduḥkhē bhayakrōdhau lābhālābhau bhavābhavau ।
    yacca kińcittathābhūtaṃ nanu daivasya karma tat ॥
    Happiness or misery, fear or anger,
    loss or gain, birth or death,
    or any such other thing,
    occur only by the will of God!
    2.22.23 ருஷயோऽப்யுக்ரதபஸோ தைவேநாபிப்ரபீடிதா: ।
    உத்ஸ்ருஜ்ய நியமாம்ஸ்தீவ்ராந்ப்ரஸ்யந்தே காமமந்யுபி: ॥
    ṛṣayō'pyugratapasō daivēnābhiprapīḍitāḥ ।
    utsṛjya niyamāṃstīvrānbhraṡyantē kāmamanyubhiḥ ॥
    Even Ṛshis who undertake fierce Tapa,
    when taken to unkindly by gods,
    succumb to passion and anger
    and lose their severe discipline, and fall!
    2.22.24 அஸங்கல்பிதமேவேஹ யதகஸ்மாத்ப்ரவர்ததே ।
    நிவர்த்யாரம்பமாரப்தம் நநு தைவஸ்ய கர்ம தத் ॥
    asaṅkalpitamēvēha yadakasmātpravartatē ।
    nivartyārambhamārabdhaṃ nanu daivasya karma tat ॥
    Whatever stops something that has already begun,
    coming from nowhere all of a sudden,
    is certainly an act of none other than the gods!
    2.22.25 ஏதயா தத்த்வயா புத்த்யா ஸம்ஸ்தப்யாத்மாநமாத்மநா ।
    வ்யாஹதேऽப்யபிஷேகே மே பரிதாபோ ந வித்யதே ॥
    ētayā tattvayā buddhyā saṃstabhyātmānamātmanā ।
    vyāhatē'pyabhiṣēkē mē paritāpō na vidyatē ॥
    I have reconciled myself
    by thinking thus deeply about this.
    I no more feel unhappy,
    even though my consecration has been thwarted.
    2.22.26 தஸ்மாதபரிதாபஸ்ஸம்ஸ்த்வமப்யநுவிதாய மாம் ।
    ப்ரதிஸம்ஹாரய க்ஷிப்ரமாபிஷேசநிகீம் க்ரியாம் ॥
    tasmādaparitāpassaṃstvamapyanuvidhāya mām ।
    pratisaṃhāraya kṣipramābhiṣēcanikīṃ kriyām ॥
    Hence may you also, like me, give up your resentment
    and plan on unwinding immediately
    all the activities related to the consecration!
    2.22.27 ஏபிரேவ கடை ஸ்ஸர்வைரபிஷேசநஸம்ப்ருதை: ।
    மம லக்ஷ்மண! தாபஸ்யே வ்ரதஸ்நாநம் பவிஷ்யதி ॥
    ēbhirēva ghaṭai ssarvairabhiṣēcanasambhṛtaiḥ ।
    mama lakṣmaṇa! tāpasyē vratasnānaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥
    O Lakshmaṇa! May these very pots meant for the consecration
    be used for my bath of commencement to the discipline of Tapa!
    2.22.28 அதவா கிம் மமைதேந ராஜத்ரவ்யமயேந து ।
    உத்த்ருதம் மே ஸ்வயம் தோயம் வ்ரதாதேஸம் கரிஷ்யதி ॥
    athavā kiṃ mamaitēna rājadravyamayēna tu ।
    uddhṛtaṃ mē svayaṃ tōyaṃ vratādēṡaṃ kariṣyati ॥
    Or may be, I should not have anything to do
    with this water that belongs to the kingdom.
    I shall myself fetch water freshly for
    the commencement of my Vrata!
    2.22.29 மா ச லக்ஷ்மண! ஸந்தாபம் கார்ஷீர்லக்ஷ்ம்யா விபர்யயே ।
    ராஜ்யம் வா வநவாஸோ வா வநவாஸோ மஹோதய: ॥
    mā ca lakṣmaṇa! santāpaṃ kārṣīrlakṣmyā viparyayē ।
    rājyaṃ vā vanavāsō vā vanavāsō mahōdayaḥ ॥
    O Lakshmaṇa! Do not fret about this reversal of fortune!
    Between life in the Vana and holding the reins of the kingdom,
    I consider the former to be more worthy!
    2.22.30 ந லக்ஷ்மணாஸ்மிந்கலு கர்மவிக்நே
    மாதா யவீயஸ்யதிஸங்கநீயா ।
    தைவாபிபந்நா ஹி வதத்யநிஷ்டம்
    ஜாநாஸி தைவம் ச ததா ப்ரபாவம் ॥
    na lakṣmaṇāsminkhalu karmavighnē
    mātā yavīyasyatiṡaṅkanīyā ।
    daivābhipannā hi vadatyaniṣṭaṃ
    jānāsi daivaṃ ca tathā prabhāvam ॥
    Our younger mother should not be blamed,
    O Lakshmaṇa, for this impediment!
    She must have spoken these unpleasant words
    under the influence of some gods.
    You know very well the power of the will of gods!
    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அயோத்யாகாண்டே த்வாவிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ayōdhyākāṇḍē dvāviṃṡassargaḥ ॥
    Thus concludes the twenty second Sarga
    in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.
