    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 41



    This Sarga describes the gloom that descended up on the king’s palace and the city of Ayōdhyā, after Rāma’s departure.
    2.41.1 தஸ்மிந்ஸ்து புருஷவ்யாக்ரே விநிர்யாதி க்ருதாஞ்ஜலௌ ।
    ஆர்தஸப்தோऽஹி ஸஞ்ஜஜ்ஞே ஸ்த்ரீணாமந்த:புரே மஹாந் ॥
    tasminstu puruṣavyāghrē viniryāti kṛtāñjalau ।
    ārtaṡabdō'hi sañjajñē strīṇāmantaḥpurē mahān ॥
    As that tiger among men,
    with palms joined in reverence, departed,
    a great cry of distress broke out
    from the women in the inner quarters.
    2.41.2 அநாதஸ்ய ஜநஸ்யாஸ்ய துர்பலஸ்ய தபஸ்விந: ।
    யோ கதிஸ்ஸரணம் சாஸீத்ஸ நாத: க்வ நு கச்சதி ॥
    anāthasya janasyāsya durbalasya tapasvinaḥ ।
    yō gatiṡṡaraṇaṃ cāsītsa nāthaḥ kva nu gacchati ॥
    Ah! where does he, the master, go,
    he, the refuge and protector of all these people
    who are drained, weak and recourseless now!
    2.41.3 ந க்ருத்யத்யபிஸப்தோऽபி க்ரோதநீயாநி வர்ஜயந் ।
    க்ருத்தாந்ப்ரஸாதயந்ஸர்வாந் ஸமது:க: க்வ கஜ்சதி ॥
    na krudhyatyabhiṡaptō'pi krōdhanīyāni varjayan ।
    kruddhānprasādayansarvān samaduḥkhaḥ kva gajchati ॥
    Ah! where does he,
    the man of equipoise at times of comfort and hardship go,
    he, who never gets angry even when accused falsely,
    condones even acts that should be met with indignation,
    consoles even those who are bitter!
    2.41.4 கௌஸல்யாயாம் மஹாதேஜா யதா மாதரி வர்ததே ।
    ததா யோ வர்ததேऽஸ்மாஸு மஹாத்மா க்வ நு கச்சதி ॥
    kausalyāyāṃ mahātējā yathā mātari vartatē ।
    tathā yō vartatē'smāsu mahātmā kva nu gacchati ॥
    Ah! Where does he, the supremely radiant Mahātma, go,
    he, who treats all of us in the same manner that
    he treats his own mother Kousalyā!
    2.41.5 கைகேய்யா க்லிஸ்யமாநேந ராஜ்ஞா ஸஞ்சோதிதோ வநம் ।
    பரித்ராதா ஜநஸ்யாஸ்ய ஜகத: க்வ நு கச்சதி ॥
    kaikēyyā kliṡyamānēna rājñā sañcōditō vanam ।
    paritrātā janasyāsya jagataḥ kva nu gacchati ॥
    Ah! Where does he,
    the protector all the world and its inhabitants, go,
    he, who is troubled by Kaikēyee
    and ordered by the king to live in Vana!
    2.41.6 அஹோ! நிஸ்சேதநோ ராஜா ஜீவலோகஸ்ய ஸம்ப்ரியம் ।
    தர்ம்யம் ஸத்யவ்ரதம் ராமம் வநவாஸே ப்ரவத்ஸ்யதி ॥
    ahō! niṡcētanō rājā jīvalōkasya sampriyam ।
    dharmyaṃ satyavrataṃ rāmaṃ vanavāsē pravatsyati ॥
    Alas! This senseless king is sending Rāma,
    the darling of all living beings,
    the devotee of Dharma and the adherent of truth,
    away to the Vana !
    2.41.7 இதி ஸர்வா மஹிஷ்யஸ்தா விவத்ஸா இவ தேநவ: ।
    ருருதுஸ்சைவ து:கார்தா: ஸஸ்வரம் ச விசுக்ருஸு: ॥
    iti sarvā mahiṣyastā vivatsā iva dhēnavaḥ ।
    ruruduṡcaiva duḥkhārtāḥ sasvaraṃ ca vicukruṡuḥ ॥
    Thus all the queens of the king,
    like cows that had lost their young,
    wept and wailed aloud in unison, overcome by grief.
    2.41.8 ஸ தமந்த: புரே கோரமார்தஸப்தம் மஹீபதி: ।
    புத்ரஸோகாபிஸந்தப்த: ஸ்ருத்வா சாஸீத்ஸுது:கித: ॥
    sa tamantaḥ purē ghōramārtaṡabdaṃ mahīpatiḥ ।
    putraṡōkābhisantaptaḥ ṡrutvā cāsītsuduḥkhitaḥ ॥
    The ruler of the world, who was already
    fried by the grief on account of his son,
    plunged in to deeper distress hearing those
    terrible and desolate cries from the inner quarters.
    2.41.9 நாக்நிஹோத்ராண்யஹூயந்த நாபசந் க்ருஹமேதிந:
    அகுர்வந்ந ப்ரஜா: கார்யம் ஸூர்யஸ்சாந்தரதீயத ॥
    nāgnihōtrāṇyahūyanta nāpacan gṛhamēdhinaḥ
    akurvanna prajāḥ kāryaṃ sūryaṡcāntaradhīyata ॥
    No fire rituals and oblations were made.
    No householder cooked food.
    None of the public services were attended to.
    And the sun also disappeared. I cannot stop sharing my joy at this beautiful transition of the scene into the night by Vālmeeki with the last sentence of the Ṡlōkas here.
    2.41.10 வ்யஸ்ருஜந் கபலாந்நாகா காவோ வத்ஸாந்ந பாயயந் ।
    புத்ரம் ப்ரதமஜம் லப்த்வா ஜநநீ நாப்யநந்தத ॥
    vyasṛjan kabalānnāgā gāvō vatsānna pāyayan ।
    putraṃ prathamajaṃ labdhvā jananī nābhyanandata ॥
    Elephants did not touch their portions.
    Cows did not suckle their young.
    Even women who gave birth to their first son
    could not feel the joy.
    2.41.11 த்ரிஸங்குர்லோஹிதாங்கஸ்ச ப்ருஹஸ்பதிபுதாவபி ।
    தாருணா ஸ்ஸோமமப்யேத்ய க்ரஹாஸ்ஸர்வே வ்யவஸ்திதா: ॥
    triṡaṅkurlōhitāṅgaṡca bṛhaspatibudhāvapi ।
    dāruṇā ssōmamabhyētya grahāssarvē vyavasthitāḥ ॥
    The celestial being Triṡanku and the red planet Kuja,
    and also Bṛhaspati and Budha
    and all the other dreadful planets
    balefully beset upon the moon.
    Bṛhaspati is Jupiter and Budha is Mercury. We use the word ‘planet’ for ‘Graha’, for lack of a better alternative, but it should be noted that they are not identical.


    Graha is a generic term for any object that moves in the skies against the backdrop of stationary star constellations, which includes even the Sun and the Moon.


    A planet, on other hand, at least in the modern sense, is used in the specific sense of a large body that orbits a star in general and Sun in particular.


    Neither is right or wrong, but just different.




    2.41.12 நக்ஷத்ராணி கதார்சீம்ஷி க்ரஹாஸ்ச கததேஜஸ: ।
    விஸாகாஸ்து ஸதூமாஸ்ச நபஸி ப்ரசகாஸிரே ॥
    nakṣatrāṇi gatārcīṃṣi grahāṡca gatatējasaḥ ।
    viṡākhāstu sadhūmāṡca nabhasi pracakāṡirē ॥
    The stars lost their glitter and planets their radiance.
    The shine of the star constellation of Viṡākha
    was dimmed by smog in the sky.
    Special mention of Viṡākha was made
    because it was the star of Kōsala country.
    2.41.13 காலிகாநிலவேகேந மஹோததிரிவோத்தித: ।
    ராமே வநம் ப்ரவ்ரஜிதே நகரம் ப்ரசசால தத் ॥
    kālikānilavēgēna mahōdadhirivōtthitaḥ ।
    rāmē vanaṃ pravrajitē nagaraṃ pracacāla tat ॥
    Just as a mighty ocean would swell in turbulence
    fanned by the tearing winds of apocalypse,
    the entire city was shaken
    by the departure of Rāma to the Vana.
    2.41.14 திஸ: பர்யாகுலாஸ்ஸர்வாஸ்திமிரேணேவ ஸம்வ்ருதா: ।
    ந க்ரஹோ நாபி நக்ஷத்ரம் ப்ரசகாஸே நகிஞ்சந ॥
    diṡaḥ paryākulāssarvāstimirēṇēva saṃvṛtāḥ ।
    na grahō nāpi nakṣatraṃ pracakāṡē nakiñcana ॥
    The cardinals became disoriented, clouded by darkness.
    Nothing, not even the stars or planets, could be seen shining.
    2.41.15 அகஸ்மாந்நாகரஸ்ஸர்வோ ஜநோ தைந்யமுபாகமத் ।
    ஆஹாரே வா விஹாரே வா ந கஸ்சிதகரோந்மந: ॥
    akasmānnāgarassarvō janō dainyamupāgamat ।
    āhārē vā vihārē vā na kaṡcidakarōnmanaḥ ॥
    In no time, everyone in the
    city fell into a depressing gloom.
    And no one had the mind to eat or play.
    2.41.16 ஸோகபர்யாயஸந்தப்தஸ்ஸததம் தீர்கமுச்சவஸந் ।
    அயோத்யாயாம் ஜநஸ்ஸர்வஸ்ஸுஸோச ஜகதீபதிம் ॥
    ṡōkaparyāyasantaptassatataṃ dīrghamucchavasan ।
    ayōdhyāyāṃ janassarvaṡṡuṡōca jagatīpatim ॥
    Everyone in Ayōdhyā, tormented by grief,
    heaving long sighs, felt sorry for the lord of the land.
    2.41.17 பாஷ்பபர்யாகுலமுகோ ராஜமார்ககதோ ஜந: ।
    ந ஹ்ருஷ்டோ லக்ஷ்யதே கஸ்சித்ஸர்வ ஸ்ஸோகபராயண: ॥
    bāṣpaparyākulamukhō rājamārgagatō janaḥ ।
    na hṛṣṭō lakṣyatē kaṡcitsarva ṡṡōkaparāyaṇaḥ ॥
    The faces of the people on the royal pathway
    swelled with tears. No happiness could be seen anywhere.
    Everyone was overwhelmed by grief.
    2.41.18 ந வாதி பவநஸ்ஸீதோ ந ஸஸீ ஸௌம்யதர்ஸந: ।
    ந ஸூர்யஸ்தபதே லோகம் ஸர்வம் பர்யாகுலம் ஜகத் ॥
    na vāti pavanaṡṡītō na ṡaṡī saumyadarṡanaḥ ।
    na sūryastapatē lōkaṃ sarvaṃ paryākulaṃ jagat ॥
    Neither was the breeze cool,
    nor the moon pleasant and
    nor was the sun was able to warm up the world.
    The entire world was agitated.
    2.41.19 அநர்திநஸ்ஸுதா: ஸ்த்ரீணாம் பர்தாரோ ப்ராதரஸ்ததா ।
    ஸர்வே ஸர்வம் பரித்யஜ்ய ராமமேவாந்வசிந்தயந் ॥
    anarthinassutāḥ strīṇāṃ bhartārō bhrātarastathā ।
    sarvē sarvaṃ parityajya rāmamēvānvacintayan ॥
    Neither the sons, nor the husbands
    were thinking of the women.
    Nor were the brothers thinking of each other.
    Everyone gave up everything,
    thinking of nothing but Rāma.
    2.41.20 யே து ராமஸ்ய ஸுஹ்ருதஸ்ஸர்வே தே மூடசேதஸ: ।
    ஸோகபாரேண சாக்ராந்தாஸ்ஸயநம் ந ஜஹுஸ்ததா ॥
    yē tu rāmasya suhṛdassarvē tē mūḍhacētasaḥ ।
    ṡōkabhārēṇa cākrāntāṡṡayanaṃ na jahustadā ॥
    As for all the friends of Rāma,
    with minds stupefied and overwhelmed by grief,
    they could not even move from their beds.
    2.41.21 ததஸ்த்வயோத்யா ரஹிதா மஹாத்மநா
    புரந்தரேணேவ மஹீ ஸபர்வதா ।
    சசால கோரம் பயஸோகபீடிதா
    ஸநாகயோதாஸ்வகணா நநாத ச ॥
    tatastvayōdhyā rahitā mahātmanā
    purandarēṇēva mahī saparvatā ।
    cacāla ghōraṃ bhayaṡōkapīḍitā
    sanāgayōdhāṡvagaṇā nanāda ca ॥
    Ayōdhyā, bereft of that Mahātma,
    rocked frightfully under the
    shock of fear and grief,
    along with the elephantry, cavalry and infantry
    as the earth with its mountains might,
    bereft of the protection by Indra.
    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அயோத்யாகாண்டே ஏகசத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ayōdhyākāṇḍē ēkacatvāriṃṡassargaḥ ॥
    Thus concludes the forty first Sarga
    in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.
