    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 50
    In this Sarga, Rāma travels beyond the borders of Kōsala kingdom and reaches the banks of river Gaṅga, at Ṡṛṅgibērapura.


    Guha, the tribal king of that region and a good friend of Rāma hears about Rāma’s arrival there and receives him with due hospitality. Rāma respectfully refuses the offerings brought by Guha, accepting only the fodder for the horses.


    Rāma takes rest, along with Seetā, underneath a tree for the night. Lakshmaṇa, Sumantra and Guha provide him with vigil overnight.
    2.50.1 விஸாலாந் கோஸலாந் ரம்யாந் யாத்வா லக்ஷ்மணபூர்வஜ: ।
    அயோத்யாபிமுகோ தீமாந் ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
    viṡālān kōsalān ramyān yātvā lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ ।
    ayōdhyābhimukhō dhīmān prāñjalirvākyamabravīt ॥
    Having crossed the vast and beautiful regions of Kōsala,
    the brilliant elder brother of Lakshmaṇa
    turned towards Ayōdhyā and with joined palms said:
    2.50.2 ஆப்ருச்சே த்வாம் புரீஸ்ரேஷ்டே காகுத்ஸ்தபரிபாலிதே ।
    தைவதாநி ச யாநி த்வாம் பாலயந்தி வஸந்தி ச ॥
    āpṛcchē tvāṃ purīṡrēṣṭhē kākutsthaparipālitē ।
    daivatāni ca yāni tvāṃ pālayanti vasanti ca ॥
    O best of cities ruled by the kings of Kākutstha lineage!
    I take leave of you and of all the gods inhabiting and guarding you.
    2.50.3 நிவ்ருத்தவநவாஸஸ்த்வாமந்ருணோ ஜகதீபதே: ।
    புநர்த்ரக்ஷ்யாமி மாத்ரா ச பித்ரா ச ஸஹ ஸங்கத: ॥
    nivṛttavanavāsastvāmanṛṇō jagatīpatēḥ ।
    punardrakṣyāmi mātrā ca pitrā ca saha saṅgataḥ ॥
    I shall complete my stay in the Vana,
    become free of the debt to the ruler of the worlds,
    and then shall see you again,
    in the company of my mother and father.
    2.50.4 ததோ ருதிரதாம்ராக்ஷோ புஜமுத்யம்ய தக்ஷிணம் ।
    அஸ்ருபூர்ணமுகோ தீநோऽப்ரவீஜ்ஜாநபதம் ஜநம் ॥
    tatō rudhiratāmrākṣō bhujamudyamya dakṣiṇam ।
    aṡrupūrṇamukhō dīnō'bravījjānapadaṃ janam ॥
    With his face filled with tears and eyes turned copper red,
    he raised his right hand and said to the rural folk:
    2.50.5 அநுக்ரோஸோ தயா சைவ யதார்ஹம் மயி வ: க்ருத: ।
    சிரம் து:கஸ்ய பாபீயோ கம்யதாமர்தஸித்தயே ॥
    anukrōṡō dayā caiva yathārhaṃ mayi vaḥ kṛtaḥ ।
    ciraṃ duḥkhasya pāpīyō gamyatāmarthasiddhayē ॥
    You have shown concern and kindness for me as appropriate.
    It is no good to continue to be distressed for too long.
    Please go on with the tasks that are in order for you!
    2.50.6 தேऽபிவாத்ய மஹாத்மாநம் க்ருத்வா சாபி ப்ரதக்ஷிணம் ।
    விலபந்தோ நரா கோரம் வ்யதிஷ்டந்த க்வசித் க்வசித் ॥
    tē'bhivādya mahātmānaṃ kṛtvā cāpi pradakṣiṇam ।
    vilapantō narā ghōraṃ vyatiṣṭhanta kvacit kvacit ॥
    Then they paid respects to that
    Mahātma Rāma by circumambulating him.
    They then stood scattered around lamenting heavily.
    2.50.7 ததா விலபதாம் தேஷாமத்ருப்தாநாம் ச ராகவ: ।
    அசக்ஷுர்விஷயம் ப்ராயாத்யதார்க: க்ஷணதாமுகே ॥
    tathā vilapatāṃ tēṣāmatṛptānāṃ ca rāghavaḥ ।
    acakṣurviṣayaṃ prāyādyathārkaḥ kṣaṇadāmukhē ॥
    While they were lamenting thus,
    not having enough of him,
    Rāghava quickly went out of sight from them,
    like Sun at the fall of night.
    2.50.8-10 ததோ தாந்யதநோபேதாந் தாநஸீலஜநாந் ஸிவாந் ।
    அகுதஸ்சித்பயாந் ரம்யாம்ஸ்சைத்யயூபஸமாவ்ருதாந் ॥
    உத்யாநாம்ரவநோபேதாந் ஸம்பந்நஸலிலாஸயாந் ।
    துஷ்டபுஷ்டஜநாகீர்ணாந் கோகுலாகுலஸேவிதாந் ॥
    லக்ஷணீயாந்நரேந்த்ராணாம் ப்ரஹ்மகோஷாபிநாதிதாந் ।
    ரதேந புருஷவ்யாக்ர: கோஸலாநத்யவர்தத ॥
    tatō dhānyadhanōpētān dānaṡīlajanān ṡivān ।
    akutaṡcidbhayān ramyāṃṡcaityayūpasamāvṛtān ॥
    udyānāmravanōpētān sampannasalilāṡayān ।
    tuṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇān gōkulākulasēvitān ॥
    lakṣaṇīyānnarēndrāṇāṃ brahmaghōṣābhināditān ।
    rathēna puruṣavyāghraḥ kōsalānatyavartata ॥
    Then that tiger among men
    passed in his chariot the Kōsala country which
    had abundant grains and wealth,
    was blessed with people of charitable disposition,
    was completely free from fear and delightful to live in,
    had houses of worship and sacrificial posts all over,
    was full of parks, mango groves and reservoirs full of water;
    was the home of a happy and flourishing population,
    was served by a number herds of cows,
    and was ever resounding with Vedic chants,
    proving to be worthy of pursuit by the Kings of men.
    2.50.11 மத்யேநமுதிதம் ஸ்பீதம் ரம்யோத்யாநஸமாகுலம் ।
    ராஜ்யம் போக்யம் நரேந்த்ராணாம் யயௌ த்ருதிமதாம் வர: ॥
    madhyēnamuditaṃ sphītaṃ ramyōdyānasamākulam ।
    rājyaṃ bhōgyaṃ narēndrāṇāṃ yayau dhṛtimatāṃ varaḥ ॥
    The best among the brave (Rāma), thus passed
    through the heart of the vast and content kingdom
    that every king would only hope to covet.
    2.50.12-13 ததஸ்த்ரிபதகாம் திவ்யாம் ஸிவதோயாமஸைவலாம் ।
    ததர்ஸ ராகவோ கங்காம் புண்யாம்ருஷிநிஷேவிதாம் ॥
    ஆஸ்ரமைரவிதூரஸ்தை: ஸ்ரீமத்பிஸ்ஸமலங்க்ருதாம் ।
    காலேऽப்ஸரோபிர்ஹ்ருஷ்டாபிஸ்ஸேவிதாம்போஹ்ரதாம் ஸிவாம் ॥
    tatastripathagāṃ divyāṃ ṡivatōyāmaṡaivalām ।
    dadarṡa rāghavō gaṅgāṃ puṇyāmṛṣiniṣēvitām ॥
    āṡramairavidūrasthaiḥ ṡrīmadbhissamalaṅkṛtām ।
    kālē'psarōbhirhṛṣṭābhissēvitāmbhōhradāṃ ṡivām ॥
    And then he saw the sacred river Gaṅga,
    the celestial stream that flows through the three worlds,
    with waters that are pure and free from moss;
    frequented by the Ṛshis and adorned by
    their Ashramas which were not too far from her;
    joyful Apsaras visiting her seasonally
    to bathe in her auspicious waters.
    2.50.14 தேவதாநவகந்தர்வை: கிந்நரைருபஸோபிதாம் ।
    நாநாகந்தர்வபத்நீபி ஸ்ஸேவிதாம் ஸததம் ஸிவாம் ॥
    dēvadānavagandharvaiḥ kinnarairupaṡōbhitām ।
    nānāgandharvapatnībhi ssēvitāṃ satataṃ ṡivām ॥
    She is graced by Dēvas, Dānavas, Gandharvas and Kinnaras.
    Many a Gandharva women is ever
    present at that auspicious Gaṅga. The majesty of Gaṅga has enchanted the people of India since time immemorial. It is sad to see it in its current state, especially as it flows through the plains, with all the industrial effluents and sewerage discharged into it.
    2.50.15 தேவாக்ரீடஸதாகீர்ணாம் தேவோத்யாநஸதாயுதாம் ।
    தேவார்தமாகாஸகமாம் விக்யாதாம் தேவபத்மிநீம் ॥
    dēvākrīḍaṡatākīrṇāṃ dēvōdyānaṡatāyutām ।
    dēvārthamākāṡagamāṃ vikhyātāṃ dēvapadminīm ॥
    She is splendid with hundreds of pleasure gardens
    and hundreds of hills serving as sporting places for the Dēvas.
    She flows through the heavens for the sake of Dēvas,
    and hence well known as a celestial river.
    2.50.16 ஜலாகாதாட்டஹாஸோக்ராம் பேநநிர்மலஹாஸிநீம் ।
    க்வசித்வேணீக்ருதஜலாம் க்வசிதாவர்தஸோபிதாம் ॥
    jalāghātāṭṭahāsōgrāṃ phēnanirmalahāsinīm ।
    kvacidvēṇīkṛtajalāṃ kvacidāvartaṡōbhitām ॥
    At places she is ferocious with waterfalls.
    At places she sports a beautiful smile with her froth.
    At places she flows smooth like the silken braid of a maiden.
    And at places she is splendid with her swirls.
    2.50.17 க்வசித் ஸ்திமிதகம்பீராம் க்வசித்வேகஜலாகுலாம் ।
    க்வசித்கம்பீரநிர்கோஷாம் க்வசித்பைரவநிஸ்வநாம் ॥
    kvacit stimitagambhīrāṃ kvacidvēgajalākulām ।
    kvacidgambhīranirghōṣāṃ kvacidbhairavanisvanām ॥
    At times she is steady and composed.
    At times she is turbulent with her rapids.
    At times she is majestic with her rumble.
    At times she is ferocious with her roar.
    2.50.18 தேவஸங்காப்லுதஜலாம் நிர்மலோத்பலஸோபிதாம் ।
    க்வசிதாபோகபுலிநாம் க்வசிந்நிர்மலவாலுகாம் ॥
    dēvasaṅghāplutajalāṃ nirmalōtpalaṡōbhitām ।
    kvacidābhōgapulināṃ kvacinnirmalavālukām ॥
    Her waters are splendid with blue lilies
    and many Dēvas taking a dip in her.
    She is flanked by sandy hills at places
    and by clear sandy beaches at others.
    2.50.19 ஹம்ஸஸாரஸஸங்குஷ்டாம் சக்ரவாகோபகூஜிதாம் ।
    ஸதா மதைஸ்ச விஹகைரபிஸந்நாதிதாந்தராம் ॥
    haṃsasārasasaṅghuṣṭāṃ cakravākōpakūjitām ।
    sadā madaiṡca vihagairabhisannāditāntarām ॥
    She echoes with the cries of swans,
    cranes and Cakravāka birds.
    Her interiors reverberate with the sounds of
    birds inflamed with passion.
    2.50.20 க்வசித்தீரருஹைர்வ்ருக்ஷைர்மாலாபிரிவஸோபிதாம் ।
    க்வசித்புல்லோத்பலச்சந்நாம் க்வசித்பத்மவநாகுலாம் ॥
    kvacittīraruhairvṛkṣairmālābhirivaṡōbhitām ।
    kvacitphullōtpalacchannāṃ kvacitpadmavanākulām ॥
    At places, she is splendid with the trees
    on her banks girdling her.
    At places, she is covered by lilies in full bloom.
    And at places, she is dense with lotus vines.
    2.50.21 க்வசித்குமுதஷண்டைஸ்ச குட்மலைருபஸோபிதாம் ।
    நாநாபுஷ்பரஜோத்வஸ்தாம் ஸமதாமிவ ச க்வசித் ॥
    kvacitkumudaṣaṇḍaiṡca kuḍmalairupaṡōbhitām ।
    nānāpuṣparajōdhvastāṃ samadāmiva ca kvacit ॥
    At places she is adorned by
    heaps of lilies in full bloom
    and at places with their buds.
    At places she appears to be intoxicated
    with the spread of pollen of various flowers.
    2.50.22-23a வ்யபேதமலஸங்காதாம் மணிநிர்மலதர்ஸநாம் ।
    திஸாகஜைர்வநகஜை ர்மத்தைஸ்ச வரவாரணை: ॥
    தேவோபவாஹ்யைஸ்ச முஹுஸ்ஸந்நாதிதவநாந்தராம் ।
    vyapētamalasaṅghātāṃ maṇinirmaladarṡanām ।
    diṡāgajairvanagajai rmattaiṡca varavāraṇaiḥ ॥
    dēvōpavāhyaiṡca muhussannāditavanāntarām ।
    Her waters are clear as crystal, free from any mire.
    She is nestled by woods filled with the din of
    the trumpeting of elephants that are guardians of the quarters,
    that are in rut and that are exquisite enough
    to be the mounts for Dēvas.
    2.50.23b-24 ப்ரமதாமிவ யத்நேந பூஷிதாம் பூஷணோத்தமை: ॥
    பலை: புஷ்பை: கிஸலயைர்வ்ருதாம் குல்மைர்த்விஜைஸ்ததா ।
    ஸிம்ஸுமாரைஸ்ச நக்ரைஸ்ச புஜங்கைஸ்ச நிஷேவிதாம் ॥
    pramadāmiva yatnēna bhūṣitāṃ bhūṣaṇōttamaiḥ ॥
    phalaiḥ puṣpaiḥ kisalayairvṛtāṃ gulmairdvijaistathā ।
    ṡiṃṡumāraiṡca nakraiṡca bhujaṅgaiṡca niṣēvitām ॥
    Like a woman decorating herself with exquisite ornaments,
    she has decorated herself with
    fruits, flowers, sprouts, shrubs and birds.
    She is swarmed by water monkeys, crocodiles and serpents.
    2.50.25-26 விஷ்ணுபாதச்யுதாம் திவ்யாமபாபாம் பாபநாஸிநீம் ।
    தாம் ஸங்கரஜடாஜூடாத்ப்ரஷ்டாம் ஸாகரதேஜஸா ॥
    ஸமுத்ரமஹிஷீம் கங்காம் ஸாரஸக்ரௌஞ்சநாதிதாம் ।
    oஆஸஸாத மஹாபாஹு: ஸ்ருங்கிபேரபுரம் ப்ரதி ॥
    viṣṇupādacyutāṃ divyāmapāpāṃ pāpanāṡinīm ।
    tāṃ ṡaṅkarajaṭājūṭādbhraṣṭāṃ sāgaratējasā ॥
    samudramahiṣīṃ gaṅgāṃ sārasakrauñcanāditām ।
    oāsasāda mahābāhuḥ ṡṛṅgibērapuraṃ prati ॥
    Emerging straight from the feet of lord Vishṇu,
    she is free of sin and is the dispeller of all sins.
    She is released from the locks of Ṡiva
    by the eminence of the descendant of Sagara (Bhageeratha).
    She is the queen of the ocean and her banks
    resound with the notes of Sārasa and Krounca birds.


    The mighty armed (Rāma) arrived at the banks of
    that river Gaṅga, at Ṡṛṅgibērapura.
    2.50.27 தாமூர்மிகலிலாவர்தாமந்வவேக்ஷ்ய மஹாரத: ।
    ஸுமந்த்ரமப்ரவீத்ஸூதமிஹைவாத்ய வஸாமஹே ॥
    tāmūrmikalilāvartāmanvavēkṣya mahārathaḥ ।
    sumantramabravītsūtamihaivādya vasāmahē ॥
    Beholding river Gaṅga there
    with its whirlpools concealed by its flashing waves,
    the great charioter Rāma addressed
    the charioteer Sumantra saying:
    "let us stay here for the night".
    2.50.27-28 அவிதூராதயம் நத்யா பஹுபுஷ்பப்ரவாலவாந் ।
    ஸுமஹாநிங்குதீவ்ருக்ஷோ வஸாமோऽத்ரைவ ஸாரதே! ॥
    த்ரக்ஷ்யாமஸ்ஸரிதாம் ஸ்ரேஷ்டாம் ஸம்மாந்யஸலிலாம் ஸிவாம் ।
    தேவதாநவகந்தர்வம்ருகமாநுஷபக்ஷிணாம் ॥
    avidūrādayaṃ nadyā bahupuṣpapravālavān ।
    sumahāniṅgudīvṛkṣō vasāmō'traiva sārathē! ॥
    drakṣyāmassaritāṃ ṡrēṣṭhāṃ sammānyasalilāṃ ṡivām ।
    dēvadānavagandharvamṛgamānuṣapakṣiṇām ॥
    O charioteer! Let us stay by that giant
    Iṅgudi tree which is not very far from this river
    and is profuse with its tender shoots and flowers,
    watching this foremost of streams
    whose waters are purifying and worthy of the reverence of
    Dēvas, Dānavas, Gandharvas and
    beasts, serpents, men and birds alike.
    2.50.30 லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ச ஸுமந்த்ரஸ்ச பாடமித்யேவ ராகவம் ।
    உக்த்வா தமிங்குதீவ்ருக்ஷம் ததோபயயதுர்ஹயை: ॥
    lakṣmaṇaṡca sumantraṡca bāḍhamityēva rāghavam ।
    uktvā tamiṅgudīvṛkṣaṃ tadōpayayaturhayaiḥ ॥
    Lakshmaṇa and Sumantra said to Rāghava,
    “So be it!” and drove the horses to the Iṅgudi tree.
    2.50.31 ராமோऽபியாய தம் ரம்யம் வ்ருக்ஷமிக்ஷ்வாகுநந்தந: ।
    ரதாதவாதரத்தஸ்மாத்ஸபார்ய ஸ்ஸஹலக்ஷ்மண: ॥
    rāmō'bhiyāya taṃ ramyaṃ vṛkṣamikṣvākunandanaḥ ।
    rathādavātarattasmātsabhārya ssahalakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
    On reaching that enchanting tree,
    Rāma, the delight of the Ikshwāku dynasty,
    got off the chariot along with his wife and Lakshmaṇa.
    2.50.32 ஸுமந்த்ரோऽப்யவதீர்யாஸ்மாந்மோசயித்வா ஹயோத்தமாந் ।
    வ்ருக்ஷமூலகதம் ராமமுபதஸ்தே க்ருதாஞ்ஜலி: ॥
    sumantrō'pyavatīryāsmānmōcayitvā hayōttamān ।
    vṛkṣamūlagataṃ rāmamupatasthē kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥
    Sumantra too got down, unyoked those splendid horses,
    and then, with palms joined in reverence,
    waited upon Rāma who sat under the tree.
    2.50.33 தத்ர ராஜா குஹோ நாம ராமஸ்யாத்மஸமஸ்ஸகா ।
    நிஷாதஜாத்யோ பலவாந் ஸ்தபதிஸ்சேதி விஸ்ருத: ॥
    tatra rājā guhō nāma rāmasyātmasamassakhā ।
    niṣādajātyō balavān sthapatiṡcēti viṡrutaḥ ॥
    There was a king by name Guha in that region.
    He was mighty strong, belonged to the hunter tribe
    and was known as their head.
    Rāma considered him as a friend, dear to him as his own life. Vālmeeki is unfolding in front of us, over the many Sargas, the world of Rāma, which is filled with many characters that love him, starting from his family members to the ministers to the people of Ayōdhyā to the Brāhmaṇas to Guha, the lord of a neighboring forest area.


    Rāma is now displaced from power. He is reduced to nobody. How many people would still stand by him? How many people can be said to love him for his character and not for his position and power?


    Introducing the character of Guha here affirms that Rāma continues to enjoy the esteem and love from the former allies, even after losing everything that he had till then.


    How many people in the world can be seen hanging on to someone who lost their power or riches? How many people in the world are worthy of such loyalty, by virtue of their character alone?
    2.50.34 ஸ ஸ்ருத்வா புருஷவ்யாக்ரம் ராமம் விஷயமாகதம் ।
    வ்ருத்தை: பரிவ்ருதோऽமாத்யை: ஜ்ஞாதிபிஸ்சாப்யுபாகத: ॥
    sa ṡṛtvā puruṣavyāghraṃ rāmaṃ viṣayamāgatam ।
    vṛddhaiḥ parivṛtō'mātyaiḥ jñātibhiṡcābhyupāgataḥ ॥
    Hearing that Rāma, the tiger among men,
    had arrived in his country,
    he, accompanied by his ministers, elders and
    people of his clan, came to greet him.
    2.50.35 ததோ நிஷாதாதிபதிம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா தூராதுபஸ்திதம் ।
    ஸஹ ஸௌமித்ரிணா ராமஸ்ஸமாகச்சத்குஹேந ஸ: ॥
    tatō niṣādādhipatiṃ dṛṣṭvā dūrādupasthitam ।
    saha saumitriṇā rāmassamāgacchadguhēna saḥ ॥
    Seeing that chief of hunter tribe coming at a distance,
    Rāma, along with the son of Sumitrā
    went forward and met him.
    2.50.36-37a தமார்தஸ்ஸம்பரிஷ்வஜ்ய குஹோ ராகவமப்ரவீத் ।
    யதாऽயோத்யா ததேயம் தே ராம கிம் கரவாணி தே ।
    ஈத்ருஸம் ஹி மஹாபாஹோ க: ப்ராப்ஸ்யத்யதிதிம் ப்ரியம் ॥
    tamārtassampariṣvajya guhō rāghavamabravīt ।
    yathā'yōdhyā tathēyaṃ tē rāma kiṃ karavāṇi tē ।
    īdṛṡaṃ hi mahābāhō kaḥ prāpsyatyatithiṃ priyam ॥
    Guha, feeling sad, embraced Rāghava and said:
    ‘This area belongs to you, Rāma, just as Ayōdhyā does.
    O mighty-armed, what can I do for you?
    Who could get such a beloved guest like you?’
    2.50.37b-38a ததோ குணவதந்நாத்யமுபாதாய ப்ருதக்விதம் ।
    அர்க்யம் சோபாநயத்க்ஷிப்ரம் வாக்யம் சேதமுவாச ஹ ॥
    tatō guṇavadannādyamupādāya pṛthagvidham ।
    arghyaṃ cōpānayatkṣipraṃ vākyaṃ cēdamuvāca ha ॥
    He then quickly brought
    various kinds of tasty foods like rice
    and also drinks and said to him:
    2.50.38b-39a ஸ்வாகதம் தே மஹாபாஹோ! தவேயமகிலா மஹீ ।
    வயம் ப்ரேஷ்யா பவாந்பர்தா ஸாது ராஜ்யம் ப்ரஸாதி ந: ॥
    svāgataṃ tē mahābāhō! tavēyamakhilā mahī ।
    vayaṃ prēṣyā bhavānbhartā sādhu rājyaṃ praṡādhi naḥ ॥
    Welcome to you, O mighty-armed!
    This entire earth belongs to you.
    We are servants and you are our lord.
    Please rule over our kingdom happily.
    2.50.39b-40a பக்ஷ்யம் போஜ்யம் ச பேயம் ச லேஹ்யம்சேதமுபஸ்திதம் ।
    ஸயநாநி ச முக்யாநி வாஜிநாம் காதநம் ச தே ॥
    bhakṣyaṃ bhōjyaṃ ca pēyaṃ ca lēhyaṃcēdamupasthitam ।
    ṡayanāni ca mukhyāni vājināṃ khādanaṃ ca tē ॥
    Please accept these foods of various textures,
    that can be munched, chewed, swallowed and licked.
    Also, here are comfortable beds for you
    and fodder for your horses. See the explanation of the four types of foods in the notes for the Ṡlōka 1.52.22.
    2.50.40b-41 ஏவம் ப்ருவாணம் து குஹம் ராகவ: ப்ரத்யுவாச ஹ ।
    அர்சிதாஸ்சைவ ஹ்ருஷ்டாஸ்ச பவதா ஸர்வதா வயம் ।
    பத்ப்யாமபிகமாச்சைவ ஸ்நேஹஸந்தர்ஸநேந ச ॥
    ēvaṃ bruvāṇaṃ tu guhaṃ rāghavaḥ pratyuvāca ha ।
    arcitāṡcaiva hṛṣṭāṡca bhavatā sarvathā vayam ।
    padbhyāmabhigamāccaiva snēhasandarṡanēna ca ॥
    Hearing the words of Guha, Rāghava replied:
    "We are honored and pleased in every way
    by your arrival on foot and
    by the display of your friendliness."
    2.50.42 புஜாப்யாம் ஸாது பீநாப்யாம் பீடயந்வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
    திஷ்ட்யா த்வாம் குஹ! பஸ்யாமி ஹ்யரோகம் ஸஹ பாந்தவை: ।
    அபி தே குஸலம் ராஷ்ட்ரே மித்ரேஷு ச தநேஷு ச ॥
    bhujābhyāṃ sādhu pīnābhyāṃ pīḍayanvākyamabravīt ॥
    diṣṭyā tvāṃ guha! paṡyāmi hyarōgaṃ saha bāndhavaiḥ ।
    api tē kuṡalaṃ rāṣṭrē mitrēṣu ca dhanēṣu ca ॥
    And pressing him to his bosom with his plump arms, he said,
    “By the grace of Providence, I see you, Guha,
    in good health and attended by your relatives.
    Is everything as it should be with
    your realm, your friends and your finances ?”
    2.50.43 யத்த்விதம் பவதா கிஞ்சித்ப்ரீத்யா ஸமுபகல்பிதம் ।
    ஸர்வம் ததநுஜாநாமி ந ஹி வர்தே ப்ரதிக்ரஹே ॥
    yattvidaṃ bhavatā kiñcitprītyā samupakalpitam ।
    sarvaṃ tadanujānāmi na hi vartē pratigrahē ॥
    I must give back to you everything
    you have offered to me affectionately,
    for I am not in a position to accept anything.
    2.50.44 குஸசீராஜிநதரம் பலமூலாஸிநம் ச மாம் ।
    வித்தி ப்ரணிஹிதம் தர்மே தாபஸம் வநகோசரம் ॥
    kuṡacīrājinadharaṃ phalamūlāṡinaṃ ca mām ।
    viddhi praṇihitaṃ dharmē tāpasaṃ vanagōcaram ॥
    Please understand that I am vowed to lead an ascetic life
    and shall live in the Vana clad
    in robes made of grass and in deer skin,
    subsisting on fruits and roots, and
    scrupulous in the observance of Dharma.
    2.50.45 அஸ்வாநாம் காதநேநாஹமர்தீ நாந்யேந கேநசித் ।
    ஏதாவதாऽத்ர பவதா பவிஷ்யாமி ஸுபூஜித: ॥
    aṡvānāṃ khādanēnāhamarthī nānyēna kēnacit ।
    ētāvatā'tra bhavatā bhaviṣyāmi supūjitaḥ ॥
    I require only fodder for the horses and nothing more.
    That itself would be enough hospitality for me.
    2.50.46 ஏதே ஹி தயிதா ராஜ்ஞ: பிதுர்தஸரதஸ்ய மே ।
    ஏதைஸ்ஸுவிஹிதைரஸ்வை பவிஷ்யாம்யஹமர்சித: ॥
    ētē hi dayitā rājñaḥ piturdaṡarathasya mē ।
    ētaissuvihitairaṡvai bhaviṣyāmyahamarcitaḥ ॥
    These horses are dear to my father Daṡaratha.
    I shall feel that I have been amply regarded
    when they are well taken care of.
    2.50.47 அஸ்வாநாம் ப்ரதிபாநம் ச காதநம் சைவ ஸோऽந்வஸாத் ।
    குஹஸ்தத்ரைவ புருஷாம் ஸ்த்வரிதம் தீயதாமிதி ॥
    aṡvānāṃ pratipānaṃ ca khādanaṃ caiva sō'nvaṡāt ।
    guhastatraiva puruṣāṃ stvaritaṃ dīyatāmiti ॥
    Guha ordered his men then and there
    to immediately provide the horses
    with all that they needed for eating and drinking.
    2.50.48 ததஸ்சீரோத்தராஸங்க: ஸந்த்யாமந்வாஸ்ய பஸ்சிமாம் ।
    ஜலமேவாததே போஜ்யம் லக்ஷ்மணேநாऽऽஹ்ருதம் ஸ்வயம் ॥
    tataṡcīrōttarāsaṅgaḥ sandhyāmanvāsya paṡcimām ।
    jalamēvādadē bhōjyaṃ lakṣmaṇēnā''hṛtaṃ svayam ॥
    Rāma, then, covering the upper part
    of his body with a robe of bark,
    offered salutations to the setting sun.
    He drank only water, brought by Lakshmaṇa himself, for his dinner.
    2.50.49 தஸ்ய பூமௌ ஸயாநஸ்ய பாதௌ ப்ரக்ஷால்ய லக்ஷ்மண: ।
    ஸபார்யஸ்ய ததோऽப்யேத்ய தஸ்தௌ வ்ருக்ஷமுபாஸ்ரித: ॥
    tasya bhūmau ṡayānasya pādau prakṣālya lakṣmaṇaḥ ।
    sabhāryasya tatō'bhyētya tasthau vṛkṣamupāṡritaḥ ॥
    When he, having washed his feet,
    lay down to sleep along with his wife,
    Lakshmaṇa stepped aside to stay under a tree.
    2..50.50 குஹோऽபி ஸஹ ஸூதேந ஸௌமித்ரிமநுபாஷயந் ।
    அந்வஜாக்ரத்ததோ ராமமப்ரமத்தோ தநுர்தர: ॥
    guhō'pi saha sūtēna saumitrimanubhāṣayan ।
    anvajāgrattatō rāmamapramattō dhanurdharaḥ ॥
    Guha too, engaging the son of Sumitrā
    and the charioteer in conversation,
    kept vigilant watch over Rāma, with bow in hand.
    2.50.51 ததா ஸயாநஸ்ய ததோऽஸ்ய தீமதோ
    யஸஸ்விநோ தாஸரதேர்மஹாத்மந: ।
    அத்ருஷ்டது:கஸ்ய ஸுகோசிதஸ்ய ஸா
    ததாவ்யதீயாய சிரேண ஸர்வரீ ॥
    tathā ṡayānasya tatō'sya dhīmatō
    yaṡasvinō dāṡarathērmahātmanaḥ ।
    adṛṣṭaduḥkhasya sukhōcitasya sā
    tadāvyatīyāya cirēṇa ṡarvarī ॥
    As that Mahātma, the gifted and renowned son of Daṡaratha,
    who had known no sorrow and was made for happiness,
    thus lay there, the night seemed to have last forever.
    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அயோத்யாகாண்டே பஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ayōdhyākāṇḍē pañcāṡassargaḥ ॥
    Thus concludes the fiftieth Sarga
    in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.
