    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 71
In this Sarga, Bharata travels from his grandfather’s place to Ayōdhyā, in all haste for seven days, crossing many rivers, traversing many forests and seeing many villages and cities along the way.

After the long journey, he reaches Ayōdhyā and witnesses a city that is far different from what he knew it as. Every place is desolate. Every house is unkempt. Even pleasure gardens are empty. No one can be seen coming into the city or going out of the city.

He finally enters the palace of the king with his head hanging and feeling miserable, distressed and joyless.

    hlādinīṃ dūrapārāṃ ca pratyaksrōtastaraṅgiṇīm ।
    ṡatadrūmataracchrīmānnadīmikṣvākunandanaḥ ॥
    Going east from Rājagṛha,
that radiant scion of Raghu dynasty
came to river Sudāma and crossed it.
The gracious son of the Ikshwākus
    then crossed river Hlādini
which lay wide between its banks,
and the Ṡatadru flowing westwards, with crested waves. In Ṡlōkas 1 through 17, it appears that Vālmeeki is taking his own sweet time to describe boring geography and places, at a time when Bharata is about to learn of the unspeakable calamity that has befallen Ayōdhyā and his life.

No, that is not the case. Vālmeeki is actually using a literary technique here. He is indicating the speed with which Bharata has to cross many hard to traverse places, at a moment when his mind is at the utmost unease.

To get a sense of this, think of the oft repeated scene in modern movies. The hero rushes his wounded father or brother or lover or friend to a hospital on a bike. Along the path, he is shown going through city roads, side roads, country roads, crowded markets, railway line crossings, crowds of buffalos blocking the road, etc. The scene lasts for almost two minutes, making it gripping.

When you are in a hurry, every obstacle feels more projected. Every mile seems to be packed with more things than usual. You notice things that you normally miss. That is the phenomenon that Vālmeeki is describing here.

O charioteer! This city of Ayōdhyā, from this distance,
does not appear to be that renowned city of whitish clay,
    full of pleasant gardens,
    virtuous performers of Yajñas,
Brāhmaṇas who are masters of Vedas,
    people who are well-to-do
    and ruled by great Rājarshis!

The flocks of birds in the temples and on
sacred trees in the squares look woebegone.
I see all people in the city, men and women alike,
their eyes full of tears, dejected, lost in thoughts,
bodies enervated and full of anxiety.

and bolts on the doors and windows turned tawny with dust,
in that city that used to shine like the city of Indra,
his cup of misery became full.

    Seeing many unpleasant things which
he had never seen before in that city,
that Mahatma entered his father’s house,
    his head hanging down,
    feeling distressed and joyless.
