    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 82
    In this Sarga, Vasishṭha asks Bharata, as the entire nobility of Ayōdhyā watches, to consecrate himself as the king and take the responsibility of the kingdom.


    Bharata gets overwhelmed by grief at those words of Vasishṭha and cries in the midst of all those who were assembled. He reaffirms that he is not proud of the actions of his mother. Stressing that Rāma alone is the king of this kingdom, he declares that he would do everything he can to bring back Rāma, or he would stay in the Vana like Lakshmaṇa, should he fail.


    He summons the army to be readied to proceed to the Vana. Everyone in the assembly feels elated. The womenfolk of the warriors, in all delight, hurry their husbands to start their journey to the Vana.
    2.82.1 தாமார்யகணஸம்பூர்ணாம் பரத: ப்ரக்ரஹாம் ஸபாம் ।
    ததர்ஸ புத்திஸம்பந்ந: பூர்ணசந்த்ரோ நிஸாமிவ ॥
    tāmāryagaṇasampūrṇāṃ bharataḥ pragrahāṃ sabhām ।
    dadarṡa buddhisampannaḥ pūrṇacandrō niṡāmiva ॥
    The sagacious Bharata beheld
    the host of nobles that filled the assembly
    like a full moon does the planets at night.
    2.82.2 ஆஸநாநி யதாந்யாயமார்யாணாம் விஸதாம் ததா ।
    வஸ்த்ராங்கராகப்ரபயா த்யோதிதா ஸா ஸபோத்தமா ॥
    āsanāni yathānyāyamāryāṇāṃ viṡatāṃ tadā ।
    vastrāṅgarāgaprabhayā dyōtitā sā sabhōttamā ॥
    The august hall was lit up by the splendor
    of the garments and the fragrances of the nobility,
    who occupied seats according to their respective status.
    2.82.3 ஸா வித்வஜ்ஜநஸம்பூர்ணா ஸபா ஸுருசிரா ததா ।
    அத்ருஸ்யத கநாபாயே பூர்ணசந்த்ரேவ ஸர்வரீ ॥
    sā vidvajjanasampūrṇā sabhā surucirā tadā ।
    adṛṡyata ghanāpāyē pūrṇacandrēva ṡarvarī ॥
    That assembly, full of learned men, was splendid
    like the night on a full moon day
    of the post-monsoon season.
    2.82.4 ராஜ்ஞஸ்து ப்ரக்ருதீஸ்ஸர்வாஸ்ஸமக்ரா: ப்ரேக்ஷ்ய தர்மவித் ।
    இதம் புரோஹிதோ வாக்யம் பரதம் ம்ருது சாப்ரவீத் ॥
    rājñastu prakṛtīssarvāssamagrāḥ prēkṣya dharmavit ।
    idaṃ purōhitō vākyaṃ bharataṃ mṛdu cābravīt ॥
    Seeing that all the sections of
    the kingdom were represented in full,
    the Purōhita, who knew Dharma,
    spoke softly to Bharata:
    2.82.5 தாத ராஜா தஸரதஸ்ஸ்வர்கதோ தர்மமாசரந் ।
    தநதாந்யவதீம் ஸ்பீதாம் ப்ரதாய ப்ருதிவீம் தவ ॥
    tāta rājā daṡarathassvargatō dharmamācaran ।
    dhanadhānyavatīṃ sphītāṃ pradāya pṛthivīṃ tava ॥
    My child! King Daṡaratha had conducted
    himself according to Dharma and has gone to heaven,
    giving you this vast realm with all its riches and grains.
    2.82.6 ராமஸ்ததா ஸத்யத்ருதிஸ்ஸதாம் தர்மமநுஸ்மரந் ।
    நாஜஹாத்பிதுராதேஸம் ஸஸீ ஜ்யோத்ஸ்நாமிவோதித: ॥
    rāmastathā satyadhṛtissatāṃ dharmamanusmaran ।
    nājahātpiturādēṡaṃ ṡaṡī jyōtsnāmivōditaḥ ॥
    Rāma, who is devoted to truth,
    bearing in mind the Dharma followed by all good men,
    did not discard the order of his father,
    just as the moon would not rise leaving behind its light. In most Indian languages, unlike in English, moon light has a word for itself. Similarly sun shine has a word for itself.


    Moon light is seen as a separate entity by itself, separate from the moon. Sun shine is seen as a separate entity by itself, separate from the sun.


    Yet, moon light is inseparable from moon. Sun shine is inseparable from sun. One is not present without the other.


    Poets use this inseparability as a metaphor when speaking of the characters or qualities of a person.


    Rāma’s devotion to truth, the poet says, is as inseparable from him as moon light is from the moon.








    2.82.7 பித்ரா ப்ராத்ரா ச தே தத்தம் ராஜ்யம் நிஹதகண்டகம் ।
    தத்புங்க்ஷ்வ முதிதாமாத்ய: க்ஷிப்ரமேவாபிஷேசய ॥
    pitrā bhrātrā ca tē dattaṃ rājyaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam ।
    tadbhuṅkṣva muditāmātyaḥ kṣipramēvābhiṣēcaya ॥
    Your father and your brother have given you
    the kingdom that is free from all troubles.
    Enjoy it with the help of the pleased ministers.
    Get yourself crowned immediately.
    2.82.8 உதீச்யா ஸ்ச ப்ரதீச்யா ஸ்ச தாக்ஷிணாத்யாஸ்ச கேவலா: ।
    கோட்யாபராந்தாஸ்ஸாமுத்ராரத்நாந்யபிஹரந்துதே ॥
    udīcyā ṡca pratīcyā ṡca dākṣiṇātyāṡca kēvalāḥ ।
    kōṭyāparāntāssāmudrāratnānyabhiharantutē ॥
    May (the kings) from East, South and central regions and
    those from the oceans bring you precious gems in Crores.
    ‘From the oceans’ should be understood as
    ‘from the coastal regions’.
    2.82.9 தச்ச்ருத்வா பரதோ வாக்யம் ஸோகேநாபிபரிப்லுத: ।
    ஜகாம மநஸா ராமம் தர்மஜ்ஞோ தர்மகாங்க்ஷயா ॥
    tacchrutvā bharatō vākyaṃ ṡōkēnābhipariplutaḥ ।
    jagāma manasā rāmaṃ dharmajñō dharmakāṅkṣayā ॥
    Upon hearing those words, Bharata
    was overwhelmed by grief.
    The mind of that Dharmajña,
    driven by the desire to adhere to Dharma,
    drifted to (the thoughts of) Rāma.
    2.82.10 ஸபாஷ்பகலயா வாசா கலஹம்ஸஸ்வரோ யுவா ।
    விலலாப ஸபாமத்யே ஜகர்ஹே ச புரோஹிதம் ॥
    sabāṣpakalayā vācā kalahaṃsasvarō yuvā ।
    vilalāpa sabhāmadhyē jagarhē ca purōhitam ॥
    In the midst of the assembly
    that young man wept with his swan
    like sweet voice becoming wet.
    He even reproached the Purōhita.
    2.82.11 சரிதப்ரஹ்மசர்யஸ்ய வித்யாஸ்நாதஸ்ய தீமத: ।
    தர்மே ப்ரயதமாநஸ்ய கோ ராஜ்யம் மத்விதோ ஹரேத் ॥
    caritabrahmacaryasya vidyāsnātasya dhīmataḥ ।
    dharmē prayatamānasya kō rājyaṃ madvidhō harēt ॥
    How could the likes of me snatch the kingdom from him
    who had led an exemplary student life
    graduating in all subjects, known to be sagacious
    and tried to stick to a life of Dharma?
    2.82.12 கதம் தஸரதாஜ்ஜாதோ பவேத்ராஜ்யாபஹாரக: ।
    ராஜ்யம் சாஹம் ச ராமஸ்ய தர்மம் வக்துமிஹார்ஹஸி ॥
    kathaṃ daṡarathājjātō bhavēdrājyāpahārakaḥ ।
    rājyaṃ cāhaṃ ca rāmasya dharmaṃ vaktumihārhasi ॥
    How can one born of Daṡaratha be part of a coup?
    Both the kingdom and I are Rāma’s;
    you must speak only what is Dharma!
    2.82.13 ஜ்யேஷ்டஸ்ஸ்ரேஷ்டஸ்ச தர்மாத்மா திலீபநஹுஷோபம: ।
    லப்துமர்ஹதி காகுத்ஸ்தோ ராஜ்யம் தஸரதோ யதா ॥
    jyēṣṭhaṡṡrēṣṭhaṡca dharmātmā dilīpanahuṣōpamaḥ ।
    labdhumarhati kākutsthō rājyaṃ daṡarathō yathā ॥
    Eldest and the best, Kākutstha, the Dharmātma,
    who is comparable to Dileepa and Nahusha,
    is the right person to inherit the kingdom,
    just as Daṡaratha himself did.
    2.82.14 அநார்யஜுஷ்டமஸ்வர்க்யம் குர்யாம் பாபமஹம் யதி ।
    இக்ஷ்வாகூணாமஹம் லோகே பவேயம் குலபாம்ஸந: ॥
    anāryajuṣṭamasvargyaṃ kuryāṃ pāpamahaṃ yadi ।
    ikṣvākūṇāmahaṃ lōkē bhavēyaṃ kulapāṃsanaḥ ॥
    Should I commit this evil act,
    that could be liked only by the ignoble and
    that would close the doors to heaven,
    I would be disgracing the name of
    Ikshwākus in this world.
    2.82.15 யத்தி மாத்ரா க்ருதம் பாபம் நாஹம் ததபி ரோசயே ।
    இஹஸ்தோ வநதுர்கஸ்தம் நமஸ்யாமி க்ருதாஞ்ஜலி: ॥
    yaddhi mātrā kṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāhaṃ tadapi rōcayē ।
    ihasthō vanadurgasthaṃ namasyāmi kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥
    I do not at all like the evil deed committed by my mother.
    Standing here, I offer my salutations, with palms joined,
    to the one who lives deep in the wilderness.
    2.82.16 ராமமேவாநுகச்சாமி ராஜா ஸ த்விபதாம் வர: ।
    த்ரயாணாமபி லோகாநாம் ராஜ்யமர்ஹதி ராகவ: ॥
    rāmamēvānugacchāmi rājā sa dvipadāṃ varaḥ ।
    trayāṇāmapi lōkānāṃ rājyamarhati rāghavaḥ ॥
    I shall be a follower of Rāma.
    He alone, the best among men, is the king.
    Rāghava is capable of ruling all the three worlds!
    2.82.17 தத்வாக்யம் தர்மஸம்யுக்தம் ஸ்ருத்வா ஸர்வே ஸபாஸத: ।
    ஹர்ஷாந்முமுசுரஸ்ரூணி ராமே நிஹிதசேதஸ: ॥
    tadvākyaṃ dharmasaṃyuktaṃ ṡrutvā sarvē sabhāsadaḥ ।
    harṣānmumucuraṡrūṇi rāmē nihitacētasaḥ ॥
    Hearing those words imbued with Dharma,
    all the members of the assembly
    shed tears of joy, their hearts bound to Rāma.
    2.82.18 யதி த்வார்யம் ந ஸக்ஷ்யாமி விநிவர்தயிதும் வநாத் ।
    வநே தத்ரைவ வத்ஸ்யாமி யதாऽர்யோ லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ததா ॥
    yadi tvāryaṃ na ṡakṣyāmi vinivartayituṃ vanāt ।
    vanē tatraiva vatsyāmi yathā'ryō lakṣmaṇastathā ॥
    If I cannot persuade the venerated one
    to return from the forest,
    I shall also live right there in the Vana
    like the noble Lakshmaṇa.
    2.82.19 ஸர்வோபாயம் து வர்திஷ்யே விநிவர்தயிதும் பலாத் ।
    ஸமக்ஷமார்யமிஸ்ராணாம் ஸாதூநாம் குணவர்திநாம் ॥
    sarvōpāyaṃ tu vartiṣyē vinivartayituṃ balāt ।
    samakṣamāryamiṡrāṇāṃ sādhūnāṃ guṇavartinām ॥
    I shall use every means to force him to come back
    as all of you, the nobility that are virtuous and good, watch.
    2.82.20 விஷ்டிகர்மாந்திகா ஸ்ஸர்வே மார்கஸோதகரக்ஷகா: ।
    ப்ரஸ்தாபிதா மயா பூர்வம் யத்ராபி மம ரோசதே ॥
    viṣṭikarmāntikā ssarvē mārgaṡōdhakarakṣakāḥ ।
    prasthāpitā mayā pūrvaṃ yatrāpi mama rōcatē ॥
    I have already dispatched all the laborers,
    and explorers and protectors of routes (to the Vana).
    All I would like now is to get started on the journey.
    2.82.21 ஏவமுக்த்வா து தர்மாத்மா பரதோ ப்ராத்ருவத்ஸல: ।
    ஸமீபஸ்தமுவாசேதம் ஸுமந்த்ரம் மந்த்ரகோவிதம் ॥
    ēvamuktvā tu dharmātmā bharatō bhrātṛvatsalaḥ ।
    samīpasthamuvācēdaṃ sumantraṃ mantrakōvidam ॥
    Having said this, Bharata, the Dharmātma,
    who loved his brother, said these words
    to Sumantra, who was skilled in strategy.
    2.82.22 தூர்ணமுத்தாய கச்ச த்வம் ஸுமந்த்ர! மம ஸாஸநாத் ।
    யாத்ராமாஜ்ஞாபய க்ஷிப்ரம் பலம் சைவ ஸமாநய ॥
    tūrṇamutthāya gaccha tvaṃ sumantra! mama ṡāsanāt ।
    yātrāmājñāpaya kṣipraṃ balaṃ caiva samānaya ॥
    Get up and go quickly, Sumantra,
    and issue orders in my name,
    for the commencement of the journey.
    Get the army ready to proceed!
    2.82.23 ஏவமுக்தஸ்ஸுமந்த்ரஸ்து பரதேந மஹாத்மநா ।
    ஹ்ருஷ்டஸ்ததாऽதிஸத்ஸர்வம் யதாஸந்திஷ்டமிஷ்டவத் ॥
    ēvamuktassumantrastu bharatēna mahātmanā ।
    hṛṣṭastadā'diṡatsarvaṃ yathāsandiṣṭamiṣṭavat ॥
    Thus told by Mahātma Bharata, Sumantra
    was delighted and issued instructions as directed,
    as if there was nothing better that he would like.
    2.82.24 தா: ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டா: ப்ரக்ருதயோ பலாத்யக்ஷா பலஸ்ய ச ।
    ஸ்ருத்வா யாத்ராம் ஸமாஜ்ஞப்தாம் ராகவஸ்ய நிவர்தநே ॥
    tāḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ prakṛtayō balādhyakṣā balasya ca ।
    ṡrutvā yātrāṃ samājñaptāṃ rāghavasya nivartanē ॥
    The subjects and commanders of the forces rejoiced,
    hearing those orders to bring back Rāghava.
    2.82.25 ததோ யோதாங்கநாஸ்ஸர்வா பர்த்ரூந்ஸர்வாந்க்ருஹேக்ருஹே ।
    யாத்ராகமநமாஜ்ஞாய த்வரயந்தி ஸ்ம ஹர்ஷிதா: ॥
    tatō yōdhāṅganāssarvā bhartrūnsarvāngṛhēgṛhē ।
    yātrāgamanamājñāya tvarayanti sma harṣitāḥ ॥
    Learning about the journey that was to begin,
    the womenfolk in every warrior household
    hurried their husbands delightfully.
    2.82.26 தே ஹயைர்கோரதைஸ்ஸீக்ரைஸ்ஸ்யந்தநைஸ்ச மஹாஜவை:
    ஸஹ யோதைர்பலாத்யக்ஷா பலம் ஸர்வமசோதயந் ॥
    tē hayairgōrathaiṡṡīghraissyandanaiṡca mahājavaiḥ
    saha yōdhairbalādhyakṣā balaṃ sarvamacōdayan ॥
    The commanders quickly mobilized the entire army
    including horses, fast ox-drawn vehicles,
    swift chariots and the warriors.
    2.82.27 ஸஜ்ஜம் து தத்பலம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா பரதோ குருஸந்நிதௌ ।
    ரதம் மே த்வரயஸ்வேதி ஸுமந்த்ரம் பார்ஸ்வதோऽப்ரவீத் ॥
    sajjaṃ tu tadbhalaṃ dṛṣṭvā bharatō gurusannidhau ।
    rathaṃ mē tvarayasvēti sumantraṃ pārṡvatō'bravīt ॥
    Seeing the army ready,
    Bharata, in the presence of the Guru,
    told Sumantra who was at his side,
    ‘Bring my chariot quickly.’
    2.82.28 பரதஸ்ய து தஸ்யாஜ்ஞாம் ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ய ச ஹர்ஷித: ।
    ரதம் க்ருஹீத்வா ப்ரயயௌ யுக்தம் பரமவாஜிபி: ॥
    bharatasya tu tasyājñāṃ pratigṛhya ca harṣitaḥ ।
    rathaṃ gṛhītvā prayayau yuktaṃ paramavājibhiḥ ॥
    Receiving those orders from Bharata
    he felt delighted and came back with the chariot
    with the best of horses yoked to it.
    2.82.29 ஸ ராகவ ஸ்ஸத்யத்ருதி: ப்ரதாபவாந்
    ப்ருவந் ஸுயுக்தம் த்ருடஸத்யவிக்ரம: ।
    குரும் மஹாரண்யகதம் யஸஸ்விநம்
    ப்ரஸாதயிஷ்யந்பரதோऽப்ரவீத்ததா ॥
    sa rāghava ssatyadhṛtiḥ pratāpavān
    bruvan suyuktaṃ dṛḍhasatyavikramaḥ ।
    guruṃ mahāraṇyagataṃ yaṡasvinaṃ
    prasādayiṣyanbharatō'bravīttadā ॥
    Rāghava, of steadfast courage and mighty prowess,
    who was firmly established in truth and valor,
    speaking thus in fitting manner,
    and setting himself up to persuade his renowned and
    revered elder brother who had gone to the vast forest,
    said these words:
    2.82.30 தூர்ணம் ஸமுத்தாய ஸுமந்த்ர! கச்ச
    பலஸ்ய யோகாய பலப்ரதாநாந் ।
    ஆநேதுமிச்சாமி ஹி தம் வநஸ்தம்
    ப்ரஸாத்ய ராமம் ஜகதோ ஹிதாய ॥
    tūrṇaṃ samutthāya sumantra! gaccha
    balasya yōgāya balapradhānān ।
    ānētumicchāmi hi taṃ vanasthaṃ
    prasādya rāmaṃ jagatō hitāya ॥
    O Sumantra, arise and go at once to the leaders
    of the army and ask them to assemble the troops.
    I shall convince Rāma who is in the forest and
    bring him back for the welfare of the world.
    2.82.31 ஸஸூதபுத்ரோ பரதேந ஸம்ய-
    காஜ்ஞாபிதஸ்ஸம்பரிபூர்ணகாம: ।
    ஸஸாஸ ஸர்வாந்ப்ரக்ருதிப்ரதாநா-
    ந்பலஸ்ய முக்யாம்ஸ்ச ஸுஹ்ருஜ்ஜநம் ச ॥
    sasūtaputrō bharatēna samya-
    gājñāpitassamparipūrṇakāmaḥ ।
    ṡaṡāsa sarvānprakṛtipradhānā-
    nbalasya mukhyāṃṡca suhṛjjanaṃ ca ॥
    And the son of the charioteer,
    with those clear orders from Bharata,
    felt his wish completely fulfilled, and issued
    directions to the prominent subjects,
    the heads of the army, and all the allies.
    2.82.32 தத ஸ்ஸமுத்தாய குலே குலே தே
    ராஜந்யவைஸ்யா வ்ருஷலாஸ்ச விப்ரா: ।
    அயூயுஜந்நுஷ்ட்ரகராந்ரதாம்ஸ்ச
    நாகாந்ஹயாம்ஸ்சைவ குலப்ரஸூதாந் ॥
    tata ssamutthāya kulē kulē tē
    rājanyavaiṡyā vṛṣalāṡca viprāḥ ।
    ayūyujannuṣṭrakharānrathāṃṡca
    nāgānhayāṃṡcaiva kulaprasūtān ॥
    Then, the men from every household,
    the Kshatriyas, the Vaiṡyas,
    the Sūdras and the Brāhmaṇas
    got up and readied camels, mules, chariots,
    and elephants and horses of pedigree.
    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அயோத்யாகாண்டே த்வ்யஸீதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ayōdhyākāṇḍē dvyaṡītitamassargaḥ ॥
    Thus concludes the eighty second Sarga
    in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.
