    What is Srimad Bhagavatam?

The Essence of Srimad Bhagavatam in one Sentence:" Bhagavan Naama Sankeerthanam" - Chant the name of Lord. The Bhagavatam begins with Emperor parikshit's sober inquiry to Sukabrahma rishi : "You are the spiritual master of great saints and devotees. I am therefore begging you to show the way of perfection for all persons, and especially for one who is about to die. Please let me know what a man should hear, chant etc.,The pradhma skantha explains How Bhagavatam first came in to existence. It all started in the forest of Naimisaranya the sages of Sounagathi approached Suta, enquired about Bhagavatam. Naradha Muni approached Vyasa to give Bhagavatam to this world. Srimad Bhagavatam consists twelve cantos, comprises 335 chapters with about 18000 verses.

Vysa under the direction of Narada Muni , his spiritual master wrote and compiled Srimad Bhagavatam. After Compiling the Bhagavatam, Vysa imparted the Bhagvatam to his son Suka Bramha rishi.Sukabrahma rishi subsequently recited the entire Bhagavatam to Maharaja parikshit in an assembly of learned saints on the bank of the Ganges at Hastinapura (now Delhi). Maharaja parikshit was the emperor of the world and was a great rajarsi (saintly king). Having received the curse that he would die within a week, he renounced his entire kingdom and retired to the bank of the Ganges to fast until death and receive spiritual enlightenment.

    what is Srimad Narayaneeyam?

Melputhur Narayana Bhattadri was born about the year 1560 in a village near the temple of Tirunavaya in Kerala. He composed the Narayaniyam at the age of 27.There are many legends associated with Guruvayoor temple. Stories of Janamejaya, Vilvamangalam, Kurooramma, Panamaram, Manjula, Poonthanam etc are just few of the many colourful characters associated with these legends. None of them are as colourful as that of Melpathoor Narayana Bhattathiripad. An extremely intelligent and talented Brahmin youth, initially spoilt by self esteem and materialistic ways, suffering from physical discomfiture and turning into spiritual ways following sound advice and producing a masterpiece. The second half of the story, extremely touching and artistic, was enacted in the Guruvayoor temple premises.

Bhattathiripad, though well educated by the standards of the period, was not interested in the prescribed routines of an ideal Brahmin. True to the modern trend he considered talent and knowledge to be a precious merchandise to be sold at the best available prize. Naturally he landed in the Royal courts of the princely states of Kerala. But, as the saying goes, the God had other ideas. He was afflicted by extremely painful arthritic condition at about the age of twenty seven. Therapeutic efforts failed entirely and by the time he decided to turn to the mercy of the Lord, he was a total wreck, not even able to walk without support. He reached Guruvayoor temple accompanied by his younger brother.

Narayaniyam is a medieval Sanskrit text, comprising a summary study in poetic form of the Bhagavata Purana. It was composed by Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, a devotee-poet who lived in the Indian state of Kerala, in the sixteenth century AD. The Bhagavata Purana is a major Hindu scripture consisting of about 18,000 verses, mainly devoted to the worship of Krishna. The Narayaniyam condenses the Bhagavata Purana into 1036 verses, divided into one hundred dasakas, or cantos. The work occupies a very high place in Sanskrit literature, both because of the intense devotional fervour of the verses, and because of their extraordinary literary merit. The Narayaniyam is one of the most popular religious texts in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and devout Hindus often recite it together in festivals and groups.

The theme closely follows Sree Maha Bhagavatham. One can safely say Narayaneeyam is a concentrated essence of the famous epic.
