Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 92
In this Sarga, Bharata thanks Bharadwāja for the hospitality and asks him regarding the whereabouts of Rāma. Bharadwāja tells him that Rāma would be living on Mount Citrakūṭa, which is three and half Yōjanas to the south from there.


As Bharata and entourage are set to leave, his mothers approach Bharadwāja and pay obeisance to him. Bharadwāja asks Bharata to introduce his mothers to him. Bharata introduces Kousalyā and Sumitrā. And then, pointing to Kaikēyee, he says that she is his mother, and is responsible for the exile of Rāma, death of Daṡaratha and the distress that he experiences.


Bharadwāja tells him not to find fault with her. He says that the exile of Rāma would result in the betterment of Dēvas, Dānavas and Ṛshis in future.


Bharata, his retinue, the women and the army move on in the southerly direction, crossing mountains and rivers.
2.92.1 ததஸ்தாம் ரஜநீமுஷ்ய பரதஸ்ஸபரிச்சத: ।
க்ருதாதித்யோ பரத்வாஜம் காமாதபிஜகாம ஹ ॥
tatastāṃ rajanīmuṣya bharatassaparicchadaḥ ।
kṛtātithyō bharadvājaṃ kāmādabhijagāma ha ॥
After receiving hospitality
and spending the night there,
Bharata, accompanied by his retinue,
approached Bharadwāja, to find out
(the whereabouts of Rāma).
2.92.2 தம் ருஷி: புருஷவ்யாக்ரம் ப்ராஞ்ஜலிம் ப்ரேக்ஷ்ய சாऽகதம் ।
ஹுதாக்நிஹோத்ரோ பரதம் பரத்வாஜோऽப்யபாஷத ॥
taṃ ṛṣiḥ puruṣavyāghraṃ prāñjaliṃ prēkṣya cā'gatam ।
hutāgnihōtrō bharataṃ bharadvājō'bhyabhāṣata ॥
To that Bharata, the tiger among men,
who came and stood by him with joined palms,
Bharadwāja, the Ṛshi, who had just
completed the fire rituals, said:
2.92.3 கச்சிதத்ர ஸுகா ராத்ரிஸ்தவாஸ்மத்விஷயே கதா ।
ஸமக்ரஸ்தே ஜந: கச்சிதாதித்யே ஸம்ஸ மேऽநக ॥
kaccidatra sukhā rātristavāsmadviṣayē gatā ।
samagrastē janaḥ kaccidātithyē ṡaṃsa mē'nagha ॥
Did you pass the night comfortably in our place?
Are your people completely pleased with the hospitality?
Tell me, O blameless one!
2.92.4 தமுவாசாஞ்ஜலிம் க்ருத்வா பரதோऽபிப்ரணம்ய ச ।
ஆஸ்ரமாதபிநிஷ்க்ராந்தம்ருஷிமுத்தமதேஜஸம் ॥
tamuvācāñjaliṃ kṛtvā bharatō'bhipraṇamya ca ।
āṡramādabhiniṣkrāntamṛṣimuttamatējasam ॥
Bharata, paying obeisance to
that Ṛshi of supreme radiance
as he came out of the Āṡrama,
answered with palms joined:
2.92.5 ஸுகோஷிதோऽஸ்மி பகவந்ஸமக்ரபலவாஹந: ।
தர்பிதஸ்ஸர்வகாமைஸ்ச ஸாமாத்யோ பலவத்த்வயா ॥
sukhōṣitō'smi bhagavansamagrabalavāhanaḥ ।
tarpitassarvakāmaiṡca sāmātyō balavattvayā ॥
I, along with my ministers, army and the mounts
had a comfortable stay and are satisfied
having everything that could be wished for,
lavishly pressed upon us by you.
2.92.6 அபேதக்லமஸந்தாபாஸ்ஸுபிக்ஷாஸ்ஸுப்ரதிஸ்ரயா: ।
அபி ப்ரேஷ்யாநுபாதாய ஸர்வே ஸ்ம ஸுஸுகோஷிதா: ॥
apētaklamasantāpāssubhikṣāssupratiṡrayāḥ ।
api prēṣyānupādāya sarvē sma susukhōṣitāḥ ॥
All of us, including the servants,
have recovered from the fatigue and stress,
having been fed well, housed well and rested well.
2.92.7 ஆமந்த்ரயேऽஹம் பகவந் காமம் த்வாம்ருஷிஸத்தம: ।
ஸமீபம் ப்ரஸ்திதம் ப்ராதுர்மைத்ரேணேக்ஷஸ்வ சக்ஷுஷா ॥
āmantrayē'haṃ bhagavan kāmaṃ tvāmṛṣisattamaḥ ।
samīpaṃ prasthitaṃ bhrāturmaitrēṇēkṣasva cakṣuṣā ॥
I beg to take leave of you, Bhagawan!
Please cast your kindly eyes upon me, o eminent Ṛshi,
as I set out eagerly to meet my brother.
2.92.8 ஆஸ்ரமம் தஸ்ய தர்மஜ்ஞ தார்மிகஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
ஆசக்ஷ்வ கதமோ மார்க: கியாநிதி ச ஸம்ஸ மே ॥
āṡramaṃ tasya dharmajña dhārmikasya mahātmanaḥ ।
ācakṣva katamō mārgaḥ kiyāniti ca ṡaṃsa mē ॥
Please tell me, O Dharmajña,
where that Dhārmika, the Mahātma, lives!
Tell me how to go there and how far it is.
2.92.9 இதி ப்ருஷ்டஸ்து பரதம் ப்ராத்ருதர்ஸநலாலஸம் ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச மஹாதேஜா பரத்வாஜோ மஹாதபா: ॥
iti pṛṣṭastu bharataṃ bhrātṛdarṡanalālasam ।
pratyuvāca mahātējā bharadvājō mahātapāḥ ॥
Asked thus by Bharata, in his eagerness to see his brother,
the supremely radiant Bharadwāja, of great Tapa, responded:
2.92.10 பரதார்தத்ருதீயேஷு யோஜநேஷ்வஜநே வநே ।
சித்ரகூடோ கிரிஸ்தத்ர ரம்யநிர்ஜரகாநந: ॥
bharatārdhatṛtīyēṣu yōjanēṣvajanē vanē ।
citrakūṭō giristatra ramyanirjharakānanaḥ ॥
Three and a half Yōjanas from here,
in the uninhabited Vana, O Bharata,
lies Mount Citrakūṭa of beautiful streams and woods.
2.92.11 உத்தரம் பார்ஸ்வமாஸாத்ய தஸ்ய மந்தாகிநீ நதீ ।
புஷ்பிதத்ருமஸஞ்சந்நா ரம்யபுஷ்பிதகாநநா ॥
uttaraṃ pārṡvamāsādya tasya mandākinī nadī ।
puṣpitadrumasañchannā ramyapuṣpitakānanā ॥
To the northern side of it runs river Mandākini
that is covered by flowering trees and
edged with delightful woods in bloom.
2.92.12 அநந்தரம் தத்ஸரிதஸ்சித்ரகூடஸ்ச பர்வத: ।
தயோ: பர்ணகுடீ தாத தத்ர தௌ வஸதோ த்ருவம் ॥
anantaraṃ tatsaritaṡcitrakūṭaṡca parvataḥ ।
tayōḥ parṇakuṭī tāta tatra tau vasatō dhruvam ॥
Mount Citrakūṭa lies next to it.
My dear child, they must be living, I am sure,
in a hut covered by leaves, right there.
2.92.13 தக்ஷிணேநைவ மார்கேண ஸவ்யதக்ஷிணமேவ வா ।
கஜவாஜிரதாகீர்ணாம் வாஹிநீம் வாஹிநீபதே ॥
வாஹயஸ்வ மஹாபாக ததோ த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி ராகவம் ।
dakṣiṇēnaiva mārgēṇa savyadakṣiṇamēva vā ।
gajavājirathākīrṇāṃ vāhinīṃ vāhinīpatē ॥
vāhayasva mahābhāga tatō drakṣyasi rāghavam ।
Make your army, O leader of armies,
which teems with elephants, horses and chariots,
march in the southern, rather, south-easterly direction.
O supremely blessed one, you will see Rāghava there.
2.92.14 ப்ரயாணமிதி தச்ச்ருத்வா ராஜராஜஸ்ய யோஷித: ।
ஹித்வா யாநாநி யாநார்ஹா: ப்ராஹ்மணம் பர்யவாரயந் ॥
prayāṇamiti tacchrutvā rājarājasya yōṣitaḥ ।
hitvā yānāni yānārhāḥ brāhmaṇaṃ paryavārayan ॥
Hearing that they were to start,
instead of getting on to their carriages,
the consorts of (Daṡaratha) the King of Kings,
gathered around that master of the Vedas, leaving their carriages.
2.92.15 வேபமாநா க்ருஸா தீநா ஸஹ தேவ்யா ஸுமித்ரயா ।
கௌஸல்யா தத்ர ஜக்ராஹ கராப்யாம் சரணௌ முநே: ॥
vēpamānā kṛṡā dīnā saha dēvyā sumitrayā ।
kausalyā tatra jagrāha karābhyāṃ caraṇau munēḥ ॥
Kousalyā, trembling, thin and pitiful,
along with Sumitrā, clasped
the feet of the Muni with her hands.
2.92.16 அஸம்ருத்தேந காமேந ஸர்வலோகஸ்ய கர்ஹிதா ।
கைகேயீ தஸ்ய ஜக்ராஹ சரணௌ ஸவ்யபத்ரபா ॥
asamṛddhēna kāmēna sarvalōkasya garhitā ।
kaikēyī tasya jagrāha caraṇau savyapatrapā ॥
Then, Kaikēyee, reproached by the entire world,
her cherished wish unfulfilled,
clasped his feet, overcome with shame.
2.92.17 தம் ப்ரதக்ஷிணமாகம்ய பகவந்தம் மஹாமுநிம் ।
அதூரார்பரதஸ்யைவ தஸ்தௌ தீநமநாஸ்ததா ॥
taṃ pradakṣiṇamāgamya bhagavantaṃ mahāmunim ।
adūrārbharatasyaiva tasthau dīnamanāstadā ॥
Circumambulating that Bhagawan, the great Muni,
she stood by Bharata, feeling downcast.
2.92.18 தத: பப்ரச்ச பரதம் பரத்வாஜோ த்ருடவ்ரத: ।
விஸேஷம் ஜ்ஞாதுமிச்சாமி மாத்ரூணாம் தவ ராகவ ॥
tataḥ papraccha bharataṃ bharadvājō dṛḍhavrataḥ ।
viṡēṣaṃ jñātumicchāmi mātrūṇāṃ tava rāghava ॥
Bharadwāja, of steadfast vows, asked Bharata:
‘I would like to know about your mothers, O Rāghava!’
2.92.19 ஏவமுக்தஸ்து பரதோ பரத்வாஜேந தீமதா ।
உவாச ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்பூத்வா வாக்யம் வசநகோவித: ॥
ēvamuktastu bharatō bharadvājēna dhīmatā ।
uvāca prāñjalirbhūtvā vākyaṃ vacanakōvidaḥ ॥
Asked thus by the sagacious Bharadwāja,
Bharata, who knew the right words,
said these words, with palms joined in reverence:
2.92.20-21 யாமிமாம் பகவந் தீநாம் ஸோகாநஸநகர்ஸிதாம் ।
பிதுர்ஹி மஹிஷீம் தேவீம் தேவதாமிவ பஸ்யஸி ॥
ஏஷா தம் புரஷவ்யாக்ரம் ஸிம்ஹவிக்ராந்தகாமிநம் ।
கௌஸல்யா ஸுஷுவே ராமம் தாதாரமதிதிர்யதா ॥
yāmimāṃ bhagavan dīnāṃ ṡōkānaṡanakarṡitām ।
piturhi mahiṣīṃ dēvīṃ dēvatāmiva paṡyasi ॥
ēṣā taṃ puraṣavyāghraṃ siṃhavikrāntagāminam ।
kausalyā suṣuvē rāmaṃ dhātāramaditiryathā ॥
O Bhagawan, this despondent lady,
who was worn out by grief and fasting,
who looks like a Dēvata, is Kousalyā,
the chief queen of my father.
She gave birth to Rāma, the tiger among men,
of lion’s stride, as Aditi bore Dhāta.
2.92.22-23 அஸ்யா வாமபுஜம் ஸ்லிஷ்டா யைஷா திஷ்டதி துர்மநா: ।
கர்ணிகாரஸ்ய ஸாகேவ ஸீர்ணபுஷ்பா வநாந்தரே ॥
ஏதஸ்யாஸ்து ஸுதௌ தேவ்யா: குமாரௌ தேவவர்ணிநௌ ।
உபௌ லக்ஷ்மணஸத்ருக்நௌ வீரௌ ஸத்யபராக்ரமௌ ॥
asyā vāmabhujaṃ ṡliṣṭā yaiṣā tiṣṭhati durmanāḥ ।
karṇikārasya ṡākhēva ṡīrṇapuṣpā vanāntarē ॥
ētasyāstu sutau dēvyāḥ kumārau dēvavarṇinau ।
ubhau lakṣmaṇaṡatrughnau vīrau satyaparākramau ॥
The one who is highly distressed
and standing leaning on her left shoulder,
wilting like the branch with shriveled flowers
of the Karṇikāra tree in the Vana,
is the lady whose sons are the
duo Lakshmaṇa and Ṡatrughna,
Veeras of true valor, comparable to Dēvas.
2.92.24-26 யஸ்யா: க்ருதே நரவ்யாக்ரௌ ஜீவநாஸமிதோ கதௌ ।
ராஜபுத்ரவிஹீநஸ்ச ஸ்வர்கம் தஸரதோ கத: ॥
க்ரோதநாமக்ருதப்ரஜ்ஞாம் த்ருப்தாம் ஸுபகமாநிநீம் ।
ஐஸ்வர்யகாமாம் கைகேயீமநார்யாமார்யரூபிணீம் ॥
மமைதாம் மாதரம் வித்தி ந்ருஸம்ஸாம் பாபநிஸ்சயாம் ।
யதோமூலம் ஹி பஸ்யாமி வ்யஸநம் மஹாதாத்மந: ॥
yasyāḥ kṛtē naravyāghrau jīvanāṡamitō gatau ।
rājaputravihīnaṡca svargaṃ daṡarathō gataḥ ॥
krōdhanāmakṛtaprajñāṃ dṛptāṃ subhagamāninīm ।
aiṡvaryakāmāṃ kaikēyīmanāryāmāryarūpiṇīm ॥
mamaitāṃ mātaraṃ viddhi nṛṡaṃsāṃ pāpaniṡcayām ।
yatōmūlaṃ hi paṡyāmi vyasanaṃ mahādātmanaḥ ॥
And know that this cruel, ill-tempered,
arrogant and immature woman is
my mother Kaikēyee, of evil resolve,
whose noble bearing belies her ignobility,
who craves for riches and
thinks herself to be the most beautiful,
because of whom the tigers among men left
with their lives destroyed,
the king Daṡaratha went to heaven losing his sons,
and I am caught in this great distress.
2.92.27 இத்யுக்த்வா நரஸார்தூலோ பாஷ்பகத்கதயா கிரா ।
ஸ நிஸ்ஸ்வாஸ தாம்ராக்ஷோ நாக: க்ருத்த இவ ஸ்வஸந் ॥
ityuktvā naraṡārdūlō bāṣpagadgadayā girā ।
sa niṡsvāsa tāmrākṣō nāgaḥ kṛddha iva ṡvasan ॥
Having said this in a voice choked with tears,
that tiger among men, his eyes red,
heaved a great sigh, hissing like an enraged serpent.
2.92.28 பரத்வாஜோ மஹர்ஷிஸ்தம் ப்ருவந்தம் பரதம் ததா ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச மஹாபுத்திரிதம் வசநமர்தவத் ॥
bharadvājō maharṣistaṃ bruvantaṃ bharataṃ tathā ।
pratyuvāca mahābuddhiridaṃ vacanamarthavat ॥
When Bharata spoke thus,
Bharadwāja, the supremely wise Maharshi
uttered these words of significance:
2.92.29 ந தோஷேணாவகந்தவ்யா கைகேயீ பரத த்வயா ।
ராமப்ரவ்ராஜநம் ஹ்யேதத்ஸுகோதர்கம் பவிஷ்யதி ॥
na dōṣēṇāvagantavyā kaikēyī bharata tvayā ।
rāmapravrājanaṃ hyētatsukhōdarkaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥
You should not, O Bharata, find fault with Kaikēyee;
for this exiling of Rāma will result in a happy future.
2.92.30 தேவாநாம் தாநவாநாம் ச ருஷீணாம் பாவிதாத்மநாம் ।
ஹிதமேவ பவிஷ்யத்தி ராமப்ரவ்ராஜநாதிஹ ॥
dēvānāṃ dānavānāṃ ca ṛṣīṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām ।
hitamēva bhaviṣyaddhi rāmapravrājanādiha ॥
This exiling of Rāma will only do good to
Dēvas, Dānavas, and Ṛshis who have realized their true Self.
2.92.31 அபிவாத்ய து ஸம்ஸித்த: க்ருத்வா சைநம் ப்ரதக்ஷிணம் ।
ஆமந்த்ர்ய பரதஸ்ஸைந்யம் யுஜ்யதாமித்யசோதயத் ॥
abhivādya tu saṃsiddhaḥ kṛtvā cainaṃ pradakṣiṇam ।
āmantrya bharatassainyaṃ yujyatāmityacōdayat ॥
Bharata took leave of him,
after paying obeisance and circumambulating him.
Becoming ready, he prompted the army
also to get ready for the journey.
2.92.32 ததோ வாஜிரதாந்யுக்தாந் திவ்யாந்ஹேமபரிஷ்க்ருதாந் ।
அத்யாரோஹத்ப்ரயாணார்தீ பஹூந்பஹுவிதோ ஜந: ॥
tatō vājirathānyuktān divyānhēmapariṣkṛtān ।
adhyārōhatprayāṇārthī bahūnbahuvidhō janaḥ ॥
Then all the different people got on the
splendid gold-treated chariots yoked with horses.
2.92.33 கஜகந்யா கஜாஸ்சைவ ஹேமகக்ஷ்யா: பதாகிந: ।
ஜீமூதா இவ கர்மாந்தே ஸகோஷாஸ்ஸம்ப்ரதஸ்திரே ॥
gajakanyā gajāṡcaiva hēmakakṣyāḥ patākinaḥ ।
jīmūtā iva gharmāntē saghōṣāssampratasthirē ॥
Cow and bull elephants, with golden girths,
carrying banners, moved rumbling
like clouds in the monsoon season.
2.92.34 விவிதாந்யபி யாநாநி மஹந்தி ச லகூநி ச ।
ப்ரயயுஸ்ஸுமஹார்ஹாணி பாதை ரேவ பதாதய: ॥
vividhānyapi yānāni mahanti ca laghūni ca ।
prayayussumahārhāṇi pādai rēva padātayaḥ ॥
A variety of luxurious carriages, big and small,
set out, with foot soldiers keeping pace with them.
2.92.35 அத யாநப்ரவேகைஸ்து கௌஸல்யாப்ரமுகா: ஸ்த்ரிய: ।
ராமதர்ஸநகாங்க்ஷிண்ய: ப்ரயயுர்முதிதாஸ்ததா ॥
atha yānapravēkaistu kausalyāpramukhāḥ striyaḥ ।
rāmadarṡanakāṅkṣiṇyaḥ prayayurmuditāstadā ॥
Then, in exquisite carriages, started
Kousalyā and other ladies, happy and eager to see Rāma.
2.92.36 சந்த்ரார்கதருணாபாஸாம் நிர்யுக்தாம் ஸிபிகாம் ஸுபாம் ।
ஆஸ்தாய ப்ரயயௌ ஸ்ரீமாந்பரதஸ்ஸபரிச்சத: ॥
candrārkataruṇābhāsāṃ niryuktāṃ ṡibikāṃ ṡubhām ।
āsthāya prayayau ṡrīmānbharatassaparicchadaḥ ॥
Getting on a splendid palanquin that was
bright as the rising moon and the morning sun,
which had been made ready for him,
Bharata, of rich bearing, started along with his retinue.
2.92.37-38 ஸா ப்ரயாதா மஹாஸேநா கஜவாஜிரதாகுலா ।
தக்ஷிணாம் திஸமாவ்ருத்ய மஹாமேக இவோத்தித: ॥
வநாநி து வ்யதிக்ரம்ய ஜுஷ்டாநி ம்ருகபக்ஷிபி: ।
கங்காயா: பரவேலாயாம் கிரிஷ்வபி நதீஷு ச ॥
sā prayātā mahāsēnā gajavājirathākulā ।
dakṣiṇāṃ diṡamāvṛtya mahāmēgha ivōtthitaḥ ॥
vanāni tu vyatikramya juṣṭāni mṛgapakṣibhiḥ ।
gaṅgāyāḥ paravēlāyāṃ giriṣvapi nadīṣu ca ॥
That great army with its herds of
elephants, horses and chariots,
seeming to obscure the entire south like a rising cloud,
traversed the woods full of birds and beasts,
and journeyed crossing the mountains and rivers
on the other side of Gaṅgā.
2.92.39 ஸா ஸம்ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டத்விபவாஜியோதா வித்ராஸயந்தீ ம்ருகபக்ஷிஸங்காந் ।
மஹத்வநம் தத்ப்ரதிகாஹமாநா ரராஜ ஸேநா பரதஸ்ய தத்ர ॥
sā samprahṛṣṭadvipavājiyōdhā vitrāsayantī mṛgapakṣisaṅghān ।
mahadvanaṃ tatpratigāhamānā rarāja sēnā bharatasya tatra ॥
That army of Bharata, with its
elephants, horses and foot-soldiers
in high spirits, shone in all its splendor,
as it entered the great Vana,
frightening the flocks of birds and beasts.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே த்விநவதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē dvinavatitamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the ninety second Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
