Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 98
In this Sarga, Bharata sends Ṡatrughna along with many men and hunters, and Guha along with thousands of his kinsmen to search for Rāma. He himself then goes on foot searching for Rāma along with ministers, citizens, elders and Brāhmaṇas, leaving the army behind.
Finally he sees the column of smoke rising from Rāma’s Āṡrama, and rejoices as one who has reached the farther shores of the waters.
2.98.1 நிவேஸ்ய ஸேநாம் து விபு:
பத்ப்யாம் பாதவதாம் வர: ।
அபிகந்தும் ஸ காகுத்த்ஸம்
இயேஷ குருவர்தகம் ॥
nivēṡya sēnāṃ tu vibhuḥ
padbhyāṃ pādavatāṃ varaḥ ।
abhigantuṃ sa kākutthsam
iyēṣa guruvartakam ॥
That leader, a man of strong legs,
having ordered the army to camp,
decided to proceed on foot to see
Kākutstha who was abiding by the word of his father.
2.98.2 நிவிஷ்டமாத்ரே ஸைந்யே து
யதோத்தேஸம் விநீதவத் ।
பரதோ ப்ராதரம் வாக்யம்
ஸத்ருக்நமிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
niviṣṭamātrē sainyē tu
yathōddēṡaṃ vinītavat ।
bharatō bhrātaraṃ vākyaṃ
ṡatrughnamidamabravīt ॥
Once the army had settled down
in an orderly way, according to plan,
the humble Bharata told his brother Ṡatrughna:
2.98.3 க்ஷிப்ரம் வநமிதம் ஸௌம்ய
நரஸங்கைஸ்ஸமந்தத: ।
லுப்தைஸ்ச ஸஹிதைரேபி:
த்வமந்வேஷிதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
kṣipraṃ vanamidaṃ saumya
narasaṅghaissamantataḥ ।
lubdhaiṡca sahitairēbhiḥ
tvamanvēṣitumarhasi ॥
O gentle one, take many men and hunters with you
and search everywhere in this Vana, without delay.
2.98.4 குஹோ ஜ்ஞாதிஸஹஸ்ரேண
ஸரசாபாஸிதாரிணா ।
ஸமந்வேஷது காகுத்ஸ்தம்
அஸ்மிந் பரிவ்ருதஸ்ஸ்வயம் ॥
guhō jñātisahasrēṇa
ṡaracāpāsidhāriṇā ।
samanvēṣatu kākutstham
asmin parivṛtassvayam ॥
Let Guha also go personally searching
for the scions of the Kākutstha dynasty,
accompanied by thousands of his kinsmen
armed with bows, arrows and knives.
2.98.5 அமாத்யைஸ்ஸஹ பௌரைஸ்ச
குருபிஸ்ச த்விஜாதிபி: ।
வநம் ஸர்வம் சரிஷ்யாமி
பத்ப்யாம் பரிவ்ருதஸ்ஸ்வயம் ॥
amātyaissaha pauraiṡca
gurubhiṡca dvijātibhiḥ ।
vanaṃ sarvaṃ cariṣyāmi
padbhyāṃ parivṛtassvayam ॥
And I will personally go around the whole Vana on foot,
accompanied by the ministers, citizens, elders and Brāhmaṇas.
2.98.6 யாவந்ந ராமம் த்ரக்ஷ்யாமி
லக்ஷ்மணம் வா மஹாபலம் ।
வைதேஹீம் ச மஹாபாகம்
ந மே ஸாந்திர்பவிஷ்யதி ॥
yāvanna rāmaṃ drakṣyāmi
lakṣmaṇaṃ vā mahābalam ।
vaidēhīṃ ca mahābhāgaṃ
na mē ṡāntirbhaviṣyati ॥
I shall have no peace until I see
Rāma or the mighty strong Lakshmaṇa
or the blessed princess of Vidēha.
2.98.7 யாவந்ந சந்த்ரஸங்காஸம்
த்ரக்ஷ்யாமி ஸுபமாநநம் ।
ப்ராது: பத்மபலாஸாக்ஷம்
ந மே ஸாந்திர்பவிஷ்யதி ॥
yāvanna candrasaṅkāṡaṃ
drakṣyāmi ṡubhamānanam ।
bhrātuḥ padmapalāṡākṣaṃ
na mē ṡāntirbhaviṣyati ॥
I shall have no peace so long as I
do not see the face, beautiful as the moon,
of my brother whose eyes are like lotus petals.
2.98.8 யாவந்ந சரணௌ ப்ராது:
பார்திவவ்யஞ்ஜநாந்விதௌ ।
ஸிரஸா தாரயிஷ்யாமி
ந மே ஸாந்திர்பவிஷ்யதி ॥
yāvanna caraṇau bhrātuḥ
pārthivavyañjanānvitau ।
ṡirasā dhārayiṣyāmi
na mē ṡāntirbhaviṣyati ॥
I shall have no peace till I place on my head
the feet of my brother which bear all the marks of royalty.
2.98.9 யாவந்ந ராஜ்யே ராஜ்யார்ஹ:
பித்ருபைதாமஹே ஸ்தித: ।
அபிஷேகஜலக்லிந்நோ
ந மே ஸாந்திர்பவிஷ்யதி ॥
yāvanna rājyē rājyārhaḥ
pitṛpaitāmahē sthitaḥ ।
abhiṣēkajalaklinnō
na mē ṡāntirbhaviṣyati ॥
I shall have no peace till
he who is worthy of the kingdom
is sprinkled with the water of coronation and
established in the kingdom of the forefathers.
2.98.10 ஸித்தார்த: கலு ஸௌமித்ரி:
யஸ்சந்த்ரவிமலோபமம் ।
முகம் பஸ்யதி ராமஸ்ய
ராஜீவாக்ஷம் மஹாத்யுதி ॥
siddhārthaḥ khalu saumitriḥ
yaṡcandravimalōpamam ।
mukhaṃ paṡyati rāmasya
rājīvākṣaṃ mahādyuti ॥
The son of Sumitrā is indeed blessed,
since he sees the supremely radiant face of Rama,
that is comparable to spotless moon,
and with eyes like the lotus.
2.98.11 க்ருதக்ருத்யா மஹாபாகா
வைதேஹீ ஜநகாத்மஜா ।
பர்தாரம் ஸாகராந்தாயா:
ப்ருதிவ்யா யாநுகச்சதி ॥
kṛtakṛtyā mahābhāgā
vaidēhī janakātmajā ।
bhartāraṃ sāgarāntāyāḥ
pṛthivyā yānugacchati ॥
The blessed princess of Vidēha,
daughter of Janaka, who followed him,
the lord of all the earth up to the shores of the ocean,
has indeed has her life fulfilled.
2.98.12 ஸுபகஸ்சித்ரகூடோऽஸௌ
கிரிராஜோபமோ கிரி: ।
யஸ்மிந்வஸதி காகுத்ஸ்த:
குபேர இவ நந்தநே ॥
subhagaṡcitrakūṭō'sau
girirājōpamō giriḥ ।
yasminvasati kākutsthaḥ
kubēra iva nandanē ॥
Fortunate is this Mount Citrakūṭa,
which is comparable to the king of mountains (Himavān)
in which Kākutstha lives, like Kubēra in (the garden of) Nandana.
2.98.13 க்ருதகார்யமிதம் துர்கம்
வநம் வ்யாலநிஷேவிதம் ।
யதத்யாஸ்தே மஹாதேஜா
ராமஸ்ஸஸ்த்ரப்ருதாம் வர: ॥
kṛtakāryamidaṃ durgaṃ
vanaṃ vyālaniṣēvitam ।
yadadhyāstē mahātējā
rāmaṡṡastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ॥
The purpose of this impregnable Vana
that is full of wild beasts, is served,
with the supremely radiant Rāma,
the foremost among those who wield weapons, living in it.
2.98.14 ஏவமுக்த்வா மஹாதேஜா
பரத: புருஷர்ஷப: ।
பத்ப்யாமேவ மஹாபாஹு:
ப்ரவிவேஸ மஹாத்வநம் ॥
ēvamuktvā mahātējā
bharataḥ puruṣarṣabha: ।
padbhyāmēva mahābāhuḥ
pravivēṡa mahādvanam ॥
Saying thus, the supremely radiant,
mighty armed Bharata, a bull among men,
entered that great Vana on foot.
2.98.15 ஸ தாநி த்ருமஜாலாநி
ஜாதாநி கிரிஸாநுஷு ।
புஷ்பிதாக்ராணி மத்யேந
ஜகாம வததாம் வர: ॥
sa tāni drumajālāni
jātāni girisānuṣu ।
puṣpitāgrāṇi madhyēna
jagāma vadatāṃ varaḥ ॥
He, foremost of men skilled in speech,
made his way through the groves of trees
that grew on mountain slopes, their tops in full bloom.
2.98.16 ஸ கிரேஸ்சித்ரகூடஸ்ய
ஸாலமாஸாத்ய புஷ்பிதம் ।
ராமாஸ்ரமகதஸ்யாக்நே:
ததர்ஸ த்வஜமுச்ச்ரிதம் ॥
sa girēṡcitrakūṭasya
sālamāsādya puṣpitam ।
rāmāṡramagatasyāgnēḥ
dadarṡa dhvajamucchritam ॥
Upon reaching the Sāla tree that was in bloom on Citrakūṭa,
he saw the rising column of smoke
from the fire from Rāma’s Āṡrama.
2.98.17 தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா பரதஸ்ஸ்ரீமாந்
முமோத ஸஹ பாந்தவ: ।
அத்ர ராம இதி ஜ்ஞாத்வா
கத: பாரமிவாம்பஸ: ॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā bharataṡṡrīmān
mumōda saha bāndhavaḥ ।
atra rāma iti jñātvā
gataḥ pāramivāmbhasaḥ ॥
Seeing that, and knowing that Rāma was there,
Bharata, of rich bearing, rejoiced along with his kin,
like one who had reached the farther shore of the waters.
2.98.18 ஸ சித்ரகூடே து கிரௌ நிஸம்ய
ராமாஸ்ரமம் புண்யஜநோபபந்நம் ।
குஹேந ஸார்தம் த்வரிதோ ஜகாம
புநர்நிவேஸ்யைவ சமூம் மஹாத்மா ॥
sa citrakūṭē tu girau niṡamya
rāmāṡramaṃ puṇyajanōpapannam ।
guhēna sārdhaṃ tvaritō jagāma
punarnivēṡyaiva camūṃ mahātmā ॥
Seeing the Āṡrama of Rāma
that was frequented by men of Puṇya,
on that Mount Citrakūṭa, that Mahātma
sped fast towards it along with Guha,
leaving the army at a distance.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே அஷ்டநவதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē aṣṭanavatitamassargaḥ ।
Thus concludes the ninety eighth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
