    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 104
    In this Sarga, Rāma asks why Bharata came to the Vana wearing robes of bark and matted locks. Bharata tells him that Daṡaratha died in grief over him, having done what he could not, at the behest of Kaikēyee.


    Bharata then pleads with Rāma, on his own behalf and on the behalf of all the ministers and the subjects of the kingdom, to return to the kingdom and crown himself as the king.


    Rāma appreciates Bharata for his strength of character and says that he should not reproach his mother. He asserts that the elders enjoy the liberty to demand anything from their capable children, wives and Ṡishyas.


    He says that Daṡaratha, in his best judgment, has apportioned the rule of the kingdom to Bharata and life in Daṇḍaka forest to him, and as such, both of them are obliged to follow that command.


    Rāma further asserts that he would consider that whatever is enjoined on him by his father, a revered man, would do utmost good to him.
    2.104.1 தம் து ராமஸ்ஸமாஸ்வாஸ்ய
    ப்ராதரம் குருவத்ஸலம் ।
    லக்ஷ்மணேந ஸஹ ப்ராத்ரா
    ப்ரஷ்டும் ஸமுபசக்ரமே ॥
    taṃ tu rāmassamāṡvāsya
    bhrātaraṃ guruvatsalam ।
    lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā
    praṣṭuṃ samupacakramē ॥
    Rāma, receiving Bharata who was affectionate to elders,
    began to ask him, along with Lakshmaṇa:
    2.104.2 கிமேததிச்சேயமஹம்
    ஸ்ரோதும் ப்ரவ்யாஹ்ருதம் த்வயா ।
    யஸ்மாத்த்வமாகதோ தேஸம்
    இமம் சீரஜடாஜிந: ॥
    kimētadicchēyamahaṃ
    ṡrōtuṃ pravyāhṛtaṃ tvayā ।
    yasmāttvamāgatō dēṡam
    imaṃ cīrajaṭājinaḥ ॥
    I would like to hear you tell me why
    you have come to this area wearing
    robes of bark, matted locks and deerskin!
    2.104.3 கிம் நிமித்தமிமம் தேஸம்
    க்ருஷ்ணாஜிநஜடாதர: ।
    ஹித்வா ராஜ்யம் ப்ரவிஷ்டஸ்த்வம்
    தத்ஸர்வம் வக்துமர்ஹஸி ॥
    kiṃ nimittamimaṃ dēṡaṃ
    kṛṣṇājinajaṭādharaḥ ।
    hitvā rājyaṃ praviṣṭastvaṃ
    tatsarvaṃ vaktumarhasi ॥
    Why did you, wearing skin of black buck and matted locks,
    enter this region, leaving the kingdom?
    Please tell me all about it!
    2.104.4 இத்யுக்த: கைகயீபுத்ர:
    காகுத்ஸ்தேந மஹாத்மநா ।
    ப்ரக்ருஹ்ய பலவத்பூய:
    ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
    ityuktaḥ kaikayīputraḥ
    kākutsthēna mahātmanā ।
    pragṛhya balavadbhūyaḥ
    prāñjalirvākyamabravīt ॥
    Thus asked by Kākutstha, the Mahātma,
    the son of Kaikēyee, holding him tightly again,
    said these words, with joined palms:
    2.104.5 ஆர்யம் தாத: பரித்யஜ்ய
    க்ருத்வா கர்ம ஸுதுஷ்கரம் ।
    கதஸ்ஸ்வர்கம் மஹாபாஹு:
    புத்ரஸோகாபிபீடித: ॥
    āryaṃ tātaḥ parityajya
    kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram ।
    gatassvargaṃ mahābāhuḥ
    putraṡōkābhipīḍitaḥ ॥
    Our father, he of the mighty arm,
    after doing the most difficult of tasks
    of abjuring you, the noble one,
    left to heaven, tormented by the grief for his son.
    2.104.6 ஸ்த்ரியா நியுக்த: கைகேய்யா
    மம மாத்ரா பரந்தப ।
    சகார ஸுமஹத்பாபம்
    இதமாத்மயஸோஹரம் ॥
    striyā niyuktaḥ kaikēyyā
    mama mātrā parantapa ।
    cakāra sumahatpāpam
    idamātmayaṡōharam ॥
    O scorcher of the foe!
    Constrained to it by my mother Kaikēyee, a woman,
    he committed a great sin that ruined his reputation.
    2.104.7 ஸா ராஜ்யபலமப்ராப்ய
    விதவா ஸோககர்ஸிதா ।
    பதிஷ்யதி மஹாகோரே
    நிரயே ஜநநீ மம ॥
    sā rājyaphalamaprāpya
    vidhavā ṡōkakarṡitā ।
    patiṣyati mahāghōrē
    nirayē jananī mama ॥
    That mother of mine, widowed,
    worn out by grief and
    having failed to get the fruit of the Kingdom,
    will fall into a dreadful hell.
    2.104.8 தஸ்ய மே தாஸபூதஸ்ய
    ப்ரஸாதம் கர்துமர்ஹஸி ।
    அபிஷிஞ்சஸ்வ சாதைவ
    ராஜ்யேந மகவாநிவ ॥
    tasya mē dāsabhūtasya
    prasādaṃ kartumarhasi ।
    abhiṣiñcasva cādhaiva
    rājyēna maghavāniva ॥
    Crown yourself like Indra, this very day
    as the ruler of this kingdom.
    You must do me, your servant, this kindness.
    2.104.9 இமா: ப்ரக்ருதயஸ்ஸர்வா
    விதவா மாதரஸ்ச யா: ।
    த்வத்ஸகாஸமநுப்ராப்தா
    ப்ரஸாதம் கர்துமர்ஹஸி ॥
    imāḥ prakṛtayassarvā
    vidhavā mātaraṡca yāḥ ।
    tvatsakāṡamanuprāptā
    prasādaṃ kartumarhasi ॥
    All these subjects and our widowed mothers
    have come to you; bless them with your grace.
    2.104.10 ததாநுபூர்வ்யா யுக்தம் ச
    யுக்தம் சாத்மநி மாநத ।
    ராஜ்யம் ப்ராப்நுஹி தர்மேண
    ஸகாமாந்ஸுஹ்ருத: குரு ॥
    tadānupūrvyā yuktaṃ ca
    yuktaṃ cātmani mānada ।
    rājyaṃ prāpnuhi dharmēṇa
    sakāmānsuhṛdaḥ kuru ॥
    O bestower of dignity!
    Take this kingdom, in accordance with Dharma,
    that has rightly come to you hereditarily.
    Have your friends fulfilled of their wish.
    2.104.11 பவத்வவிதவா பூமி:
    ஸமக்ரா பதிநா த்வயா ।
    ஸஸிநா விமலேநேவ
    ஸாரதீ ரஜநீ யதா ॥
    bhavatvavidhavā bhūmiḥ
    samagrā patinā tvayā ।
    ṡaṡinā vimalēnēva
    ṡāradī rajanī yathā ॥
    May this vast earth be saved by your lordship
    from becoming a widow,
    like a post-monsoon night by the clear moon.
    2.104.12 ஏபிஸ்ச ஸசிவைஸ்ஸார்தம்
    ஸிரஸா யாசிதோ மயா ।
    ப்ராதுஸ்ஸிஷ்யஸ்ய தாஸஸ்ய
    ப்ரஸாதம் கர்துமர்ஹஸி ॥
    ēbhiṡca sacivaissārdhaṃ
    ṡirasā yācitō mayā ।
    bhrātuṡṡiṣyasya dāsasya
    prasādaṃ kartumarhasi ॥
    I beseech you bowing my head along with these ministers.
    May you shower your kindness on this
    brother, Ṡishya and servant (of yours).
    2.104.13 ததிதம் ஸாஸ்வதம் பித்ர்யம்
    ஸர்வம் ப்ரக்ருதிமண்டலம் ।
    பூஜிதம் புருஷவ்யாக்ர
    நாதிக்ரமிதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
    tadidaṃ ṡāṡvataṃ pitryaṃ
    sarvaṃ prakṛtimaṇḍalam ।
    pūjitaṃ puruṣavyāghra
    nātikramitumarhasi ॥
    O tiger among men! You should not
    overlook (the wish of) this well regarded
    wide spectrum of subjects who belong
    to our father and generations prior.
    2.104.14 ஏவமுக்த்வா மஹாபாஹு:
    ஸபாஷ்ப: கைகயீஸுத: ।
    ராமஸ்ய ஸிரஸா பாதௌ
    ஜக்ராஹ விதிவத்புந: ॥
    ēvamuktvā mahābāhuḥ
    sabāṣpaḥ kaikayīsutaḥ ।
    rāmasya ṡirasā pādau
    jagrāha vidhivatpunaḥ ॥
    Having said this, the son of Kaikēyee, he of the mighty arm,
    again bowed his head tearfully at Rāma’s feet
    in a custom honored manner.
    2.104.15 தம் மத்தமிவ மாதங்கம்
    நி:ஸ்வஸந்தம் புந: புந: ।
    ப்ராதரம் பரதம் ராம:
    பரிஷ்வஜ்யேதமப்ரவீத் ॥
    taṃ mattamiva mātaṅgaṃ
    niḥṡvasantaṃ punaḥ punaḥ ।
    bhrātaraṃ bharataṃ rāmaḥ
    pariṣvajyēdamabravīt ॥
    Then Rāma took his brother Bharata,
    who was sighing repeatedly
    like an elephant in rut,
    into his embrace and said:
    2.104.16 குலீநஸ்ஸத்த்வஸம்பந்ந:
    தேஜஸ்வீ சரிதவ்ரத: ।
    ராஜ்யஹேதோ: கதம் பாபம்
    ஆசரேத்த்வத்விதோ ஜந: ॥
    kulīnassattvasampannaḥ
    tējasvī caritavrataḥ ।
    rājyahētōḥ kathaṃ pāpam
    ācarēttvadvidhō janaḥ ॥
    The likes of you, who is born into a noble family,
    who is endowed with great strength,
    who is supremely radiant and is of proven character,
    would never indulge in vice for the sake of kingdom.
    2.104.17 ந தோஷம் த்வயி பஸ்யாமி
    ஸூக்ஷ்மமப்யரிஸூதந ।
    ந சாபி ஜநநீம் பால்யாத்
    த்வம் விகர்ஹிதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
    na dōṣaṃ tvayi paṡyāmi
    sūkṣmamapyarisūdana ।
    na cāpi jananīṃ bālyāt
    tvaṃ vigarhitumarhasi ॥
    O annihilator of foes!
    I do not see even an iota of fault in you!
    Your mother should not be reproached
    by you either, out of immaturity!
    2.104.18 காமகாரோ மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞ
    குரூணாம் ஸர்வதாऽநக ।
    உபபந்நேஷு தாரேஷு
    புத்ரேஷு ச விதீயதே ॥
    kāmakārō mahāprājña
    gurūṇāṃ sarvadā'nagha ।
    upapannēṣu dārēṣu
    putrēṣu ca vidhīyatē ॥
    O sagacious and blameless one,
    Elders are at liberty to demand whatever they wish
    from capable wives and children!
    2.104.19 வயமஸ்ய யதா லோகே
    ஸங்க்யாதாஸ்ஸௌம்ய ஸாதுபி: ।
    பார்யா: புத்ராஸ்ச ஸிஷ்யாஸ்ச
    த்வமநுஜ்ஞாதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
    vayamasya yathā lōkē
    saṅkhyātāssaumya sādhubhiḥ ।
    bhāryāḥ putrāṡca ṡiṣyāṡca
    tvamanujñātumarhasi ॥
    O gentle one! You should understand that we are those
    (capable) wives, sons and Ṡishyas of him,
    of whom it was said so by the great seers of the world!
    2.104.20 வநே வா சீரவஸநம்
    ஸௌம்ய க்ருஷ்ணாஜிநாம்பரம் ।
    ராஜ்யே வாऽபி மஹாராஜோ
    மாம் வாஸயிதுமீஸ்வர: ॥
    vanē vā cīravasanaṃ
    saumya kṛṣṇājināmbaram ।
    rājyē vā'pi mahārājō
    māṃ vāsayitumīṡvaraḥ ॥
    The King has as much authority
    to make me live in the forest,
    clad in tree bark and the skin of the black buck,
    as in the Kingdom.
    2.104.21 யாவத்பிதரி தர்மஜ்ஞே
    கௌரவம் லோகஸத்க்ருதம் ।
    தாவத்தர்மப்ருதாம் ஸ்ரேஷ்ட
    ஜநந்யாமபி கௌரவம் ॥
    yāvatpitari dharmajñē
    gauravaṃ lōkasatkṛtam ।
    tāvaddharmabhṛtāṃ ṡrēṣṭha
    jananyāmapi gauravam ॥
    O you, the first one to uphold Dharma!
    A mother also deserves the same respect
    that the world expects should be shown to
    a father who knows Dharma.
    2.104.22 ஏதாப்யாம் தர்மஸீலாப்யாம்
    வநம் கச்சேதி ராகவ ।
    மாதாபித்ருப்யாமுக்தோऽஹம்
    கதமந்யத்ஸமாசரே ॥
    ētābhyāṃ dharmaṡīlābhyāṃ
    vanaṃ gacchēti rāghava ।
    mātāpitṛbhyāmuktō'haṃ
    kathamanyatsamācarē ॥
    When I was told, ‘go to Vana’ by my
    Dharma adherent father and mother,
    how could I, O Rāghava, do otherwise? It must be noted, as Rāma makes it clear here, that neither Kaikēyee, nor Daṡaratha crossed the line of Dharma in what they have done.


    Kaikēyee was legitimate in demanding the boons. Daṡaratha had no choice but to oblige, to conform to Dharma. It is the Artha, the purpose, that was put at risk by Kaikēyee.


    Kaikēyee, provoked by Manthara, felt scared of the imagined dominance of her co-wife, Kousalyā, over her. And she thought that she could prevent that fate by using the boons.


    But she did not understand that it is not that simple. She did not know that she was throwing the entire kingdom into chaos and her own life into terrible disgrace and that her own son would abhor her.




    2.104.23 த்வயா ராஜ்யமயோத்யாயாம்
    ப்ராப்தவ்யம் லோகஸத்க்ருதம் ।
    வஸ்தவ்யம் தண்டகாரண்யே
    மயா வல்கலவாஸஸா ॥
    tvayā rājyamayōdhyāyāṃ
    prāptavyaṃ lōkasatkṛtam ।
    vastavyaṃ daṇḍakāraṇyē
    mayā valkalavāsasā ॥
    You must rule the kingdom living in Ayōdhyā,
    well commended by people.
    I must live in the Daṇḍaka forest,
    wearing robes of bark.
    2.104.24 ஏவம் க்ருத்வா மஹாராஜோ
    விபாகம் லோகஸந்நிதௌ ।
    வ்யாதிஸ்ய ச மஹாதேஜா
    திவம் தஸரதோ கத: ॥
    ēvaṃ kṛtvā mahārājō
    vibhāgaṃ lōkasannidhau ।
    vyādiṡya ca mahātējā
    divaṃ daṡarathō gataḥ ॥
    Having effected this division
    in the presence of everyone,
    and issued orders accordingly,
    the supremely radiant great king
    Daṡaratha has gone to heaven.
    2.104.25 ஸ ச ப்ரமாணம் தர்மாத்மா
    ராஜா லோககுருஸ்தவ ।
    பித்ரா தத்தம் யதாபாகம்
    உபபோக்தும் த்வமர்ஹஸி ॥
    sa ca pramāṇaṃ dharmātmā
    rājā lōkagurustava ।
    pitrā dattaṃ yathābhāgam
    upabhōktuṃ tvamarhasi ॥
    And he, the King, a Dharmātma,
    a man of stature in the world,
    should be sufficient authority for you.
    You should enjoy the share
    allotted to you by our father.
    2.104.26 சதுர்தஸ ஸமாஸ்ஸௌம்ய
    தண்டகாரண்யமாஸ்ரித: ।
    உபபோக்ஷ்யேத்வஹம் தத்தம்
    பாகம் பித்ரா மஹாத்மநா ॥
    caturdaṡa samāssaumya
    daṇḍakāraṇyamāṡritaḥ ।
    upabhōkṣyētvahaṃ dattaṃ
    bhāgaṃ pitrā mahātmanā ॥
    O gentle one! As for me, I shall enjoy
    life in the Daṇḍaka forest for fourteen years,
    the share given to me by our father, the Mahātma.
    2.104.27 யதப்ரவீந்மாம் நரலோகஸத்க்ருத:
    பிதா மஹாத்மா விபுதாதிபோபம: ।
    ததேவ மந்யே பரமாத்மநோ ஹிதம்
    ந ஸர்வலோகேஸ்வர பாவமப்யயம் ॥
    yadabravīnmāṃ naralōkasatkṛtaḥ
    pitā mahātmā vibudhādhipōpamaḥ ।
    tadēva manyē paramātmanō hitaṃ
    na sarvalōkēṡvara bhāvamapyayam ॥
    Whatever my father, the Mahātma,
    who was honored by the world of men and
    who was comparable to the Lord of the Dēvas,
    enjoined on me, is what I regard as of utmost good to me
    over even the lordship of all the worlds!
    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அயோத்யாகாண்டே சதுருத்தரஸததமஸ்ஸர்க: ।
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ayōdhyākāṇḍē caturuttaraṡatatamassargaḥ ।
    Thus concludes the one hundred and fourth Sarga
    in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.
