    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 106
    In this Sarga Bharata beseeches Rāma pitifully to return to Ayōdhyā, although he does not have much to add to advance his argument against the resolve of Rāma which is firmly established in Dharma.


    He, rather, makes an emotional appeal. He says that Rāma does not deserve the hardships of the Vana and the robe of barks and matted locks does not fit him in any way. He tells that he is not competent to rule the kingdom, being inferior to Rāma in every manner. He implores Rāma not to play into the scheme laid by his mother, whose misplaced thoughts are self-evident and father, whose judgment, as he reached his end of life, is questionable. He tells Rāma to get crowned right then and there, and proceed to Ayōdhyā.


    But Rāma stays unmoved from his resolve. Everyone feels simultaneously sad and happy; sad that Rāma does not return and happy that he is steadfast in his vows.
    2.106.1-2a ஏவமுக்த்வா து விரதே
    ராமே வசநமர்தவத் ।
    ததோ மந்தாகிநீதீரே
    ராமம் ப்ரக்ருதிவத்ஸலம் ॥


    உவாச பரதஸ்சித்ரம்
    தார்மிகோ தார்மிகம் வச: ।
    ēvamuktvā tu viratē
    rāmē vacanamarthavat ।
    tatō mandākinītīrē
    rāmaṃ prakṛtivatsalam ॥


    uvāca bharataṡcitraṃ
    dhārmikō dhārmikaṃ vacaḥ ।
    When Rāma stopped after saying those meaningful words,
    Bharata, the Dhārmika, responded,
    with these extraordinary words,
    on those banks of river Mandākini,
    to Rāma, who was fond of his subjects and also of Dharma.
    2.106.2b-3 கோ ஹி ஸ்யாதீத்ருஸோ லோகே
    யாத்ருஸஸ்த்வமரிந்தம ॥
    ந த்வாம் ப்ரவ்யதயேத்து:கம்
    ப்ரீதிர்வா ந ப்ரஹர்ஷயேத் ।
    ஸம்மதஸ்சாஸி வ்ருத்தாநாம்
    தாம்ஸ்ச ப்ருச்சஸி ஸம்ஸயாந் ॥
    kō hi syādīdṛṡō lōkē
    yādṛṡastvamarindama ॥
    na tvāṃ pravyathayēdduḥkhaṃ
    prītirvā na praharṣayēt ।
    sammataṡcāsi vṛddhānāṃ
    tāṃṡca pṛcchasi saṃṡayān ॥
    Who else can be found in this world
    like you, O subduer of foes?
    Neither grief can upset you
    nor joy can make you exult.
    As esteemed by the wise as you are,
    you still (regard and) seek their
    counsel when in doubt.
    2.106.4 யதா ம்ருதஸ்ததா ஜீவந்
    யதாऽஸதி ததா ஸதி ।
    யஸ்யைஷ புத்திலாபஸ்ஸ்யாத்
    பரிதப்யேத கேந ஸ: ॥
    yathā mṛtastathā jīvan
    yathā'sati tathā sati ।
    yasyaiṣa buddhilābhassyāt
    paritapyēta kēna saḥ ॥
    What is there to worry,
    for one who is blessed with the ability
    to regard equally the deceased and the living, and
    what is not to be and what has come to be.
    2.106.5 பராவரஜ்ஞோ யஸ்சஸ்யாத்
    யதா த்வம் மநுஜாதிப ।
    ஸ ஏவம் வ்யஸநம் ப்ராப்ய
    ந விஷீதிதுமர்ஹதி ॥
    parāvarajñō yaṡcasyāt
    yathā tvaṃ manujādhipa ।
    sa ēvaṃ vyasanaṃ prāpya
    na viṣīditumarhati ॥
    But, there is no reason for you,
    who is well aware of what is right and wrong,
    to undergo these hardships and the ensuing distress!
    2.106.6 அமரோபமஸத்த்வஸ்த்வம்
    மஹாத்மா ஸத்யஸங்கர: ।
    ஸர்வஜ்ஞஸ்ஸர்வதர்ஸீ ச
    புத்திமாம்ஸ்சாஸி ராகவ! ॥
    amarōpamasattvastvaṃ
    mahātmā satyasaṅgaraḥ ।
    sarvajñassarvadarṡī ca
    buddhimāṃṡcāsi rāghava! ॥
    O Rāghava! You have strength
    comparable to that of Dēvas.
    You are a Mahātma, you are true to your word,
    you know everything, you can foresee everything
    and you are astute and discerning.
    2.106.7 ந த்வாமேவம் குணைர்யுக்தம்
    ப்ரபவாபவகோவிதம் ।
    அவிஷஹ்யதமம் து:கம்
    ஆஸாதயிதுமர்ஹதி ॥
    na tvāmēvaṃ guṇairyuktaṃ
    prabhavābhavakōvidam ।
    aviṣahyatamaṃ duḥkham
    āsādayitumarhati ॥
    Such a virtuous man like you who is
    well aware of how things emerge and recede,
    should not have to go through this
    unbearable hardship and misery (of living in Vana).
    2.106.8 ப்ரோஷிதே மயி யத்பாபம்
    மாத்ரா மத்காரணாத்க்ருதம் ।
    க்ஷுத்ரயா ததநிஷ்டம் மே
    ப்ரஸீதது பவாந்மம ॥
    prōṣitē mayi yatpāpaṃ
    mātrā matkāraṇātkṛtam ।
    kṣudrayā tadaniṣṭaṃ mē
    prasīdatu bhavānmama ॥
    I abhor the sin committed by my wretched mother
    for my sake while I was away.
    Please show your mercy on me!
    2.106.9 தர்மபந்தேந பத்தோऽஸ்மி
    தேநேமாம் நேஹ மாதரம் ।
    ஹந்மிதீவ்ரேண தண்டேந
    தண்டார்ஹாம் பாபகாரிணீம் ॥
    dharmabandhēna baddhō'smi
    tēnēmāṃ nēha mātaram ।
    hanmitīvrēṇa daṇḍēna
    daṇḍārhāṃ pāpakāriṇīm ॥
    I am bound by Dharma and that is the
    only reason now, for my not killing my mother,
    who deserves to be punished for committing a sin.
    2.106.10 கதம் தஸரதாஜ்ஜாத:
    ஸுத்தாபிஜநகர்மண: ।
    ஜாநந் தர்மமதர்மிஷ்டம்
    குர்யாம் கர்ம ஜுகுப்ஸிதம் ॥
    kathaṃ daṡarathājjātaḥ
    ṡuddhābhijanakarmaṇaḥ ।
    jānan dharmamadharmiṣṭhaṃ
    kuryāṃ karma jugupsitam ॥
    How can I commit such a heinous act (of killing mother),
    having been born to Daṡaratha, knowing all about Dharma and
    being a man of immaculate conduct and of noble descent!
    2.106.11 குரு: க்ரியாவாந்வ்ருத்தஸ்ச
    ராஜா ப்ரேத: பிதேதிச ।
    தாதம் ந பரிகர்ஹேயம்
    தைவதம் சேதி ஸம்ஸதி ॥
    guruḥ kriyāvānvṛddhaṡca
    rājā prētaḥ pitētica ।
    tātaṃ na parigarhēyaṃ
    daivataṃ cēti saṃsadi ॥
    I would not condemn the king Daṡaratha in public,
    for he was my father and my Dēva;
    he was matured, accomplished and elderly
    and above all, deceased.
    2.106.12 கோ ஹி தர்மார்தயோர்ஹீநம்
    ஈத்ருஸம் கர்ம கில்பிஷம் ।
    ஸ்த்ரியா: ப்ரியம் சிகீர்ஷுஸ்ஸந்
    குர்யாத்தர்மஜ்ஞ தர்மவித் ॥
    kō hi dharmārthayōrhīnam
    īdṛṡaṃ karma kilbiṣam ।
    striyāḥ priyaṃ cikīrṣussan
    kuryāddharmajña dharmavit ॥
    But how can anyone who knows Dharma,
    commit such a sinful act
    that amounts to neither Dharma nor Artha,
    just to please a woman? To please a woman is an obligation of a man (2.100.49), but not at the cost of Dharma or Artha.
    2.106.13 அந்தகாலே ஹி பூதாநி
    முஹ்யந்தீதி புரா ஸ்ருதி: ।
    ராஜ்ஞைவம் குர்வதா லோகே
    ப்ரத்யக்ஷம் ஸா ஸ்ருதி: க்ருதா ॥
    antakālē hi bhūtāni
    muhyantīti purā ṡrutiḥ ।
    rājñaivaṃ kurvatā lōkē
    pratyakṣaṃ sā ṡrutiḥ kṛtā ॥
    The age old adage says that the mind of
    every creature, as its end nears, malfunctions.
    The action of the king is a clear
    illustration of (the truth of) that adage.
    2.106.14 ஸாத்வர்தமபிஸந்தாய
    க்ரோதாந்மோஹாச்ச ஸாஹஸாத் ।
    தாதஸ்ய யததிக்ராந்தம்
    ப்ரத்யாஹரது தத்பவாந் ॥
    sādhvarthamabhisandhāya
    krōdhānmōhācca sāhasāt ।
    tātasya yadatikrāntaṃ
    pratyāharatu tadbhavān ॥
    I trust you, in consideration of propriety,
    remedy the wrong done by the father out of
    indignation, confusion and thoughtlessness!
    2.106.15 பிதுர்ஹி ஸமதிக்ராந்தம்
    புத்ரோ யஸ்ஸாது மந்யதே ।
    ததபத்யம் மதம் லோகே
    விபரீதமதோऽந்யதா ॥
    piturhi samatikrāntaṃ
    putrō yassādhu manyatē ।
    tadapatyaṃ mataṃ lōkē
    viparītamatō'nyathā ॥
    In this world,
    only that son is counted as a true progeny,
    who regards only the good deeds
    of his father as acceptable;
    everyone else, otherwise.
    2.106.16 ததபத்யம் பவாநஸ்து
    மா பவாந் துஷ்க்ருதம் பிது: ।
    அபிபத்தா க்ருதம் கர்ம
    லோகே தீரவிகர்ஹிதம் ॥
    tadapatyaṃ bhavānastu
    mā bhavān duṣkṛtaṃ pituḥ ।
    abhipattā kṛtaṃ karma
    lōkē dhīravigarhitam ॥
    You should be one such progeny;
    not one who plays into this
    sinful act of the father
    that is condemned by all the
    thoughtful people of this world.
    2.106.17 கைகேயீம் மாம் ச தாதம் ச
    ஸுஹ்ருதோ பாந்தவாம்ஸ்ச ந: ।
    பௌரஜாநபதாந்ஸர்வாந்
    த்ராது ஸர்வமிதம் பவாந் ॥
    kaikēyīṃ māṃ ca tātaṃ ca
    suhṛdō bāndhavāṃṡca naḥ ।
    paurajānapadānsarvān
    trātu sarvamidaṃ bhavān ॥
    I hope you will save all of us,
    Kaikēyee, me, father, friends, relations,
    and people of the city and countryside!
    2.106.18 க்வ சாரண்யம் க்வச க்ஷாத்ரம்
    க்வ ஜடா: க்வ ச பாலநம் ।
    ஈத்ருஸம் வ்யாஹதம் கர்ம
    ந பவாந்கர்துமர்ஹதி ॥
    kva cāraṇyaṃ kvaca kṣātraṃ
    kva jaṭāḥ kva ca pālanam ।
    īdṛṡaṃ vyāhataṃ karma
    na bhavānkartumarhati ॥
    What has a Kshatriya to do with the forest?
    What has matted locks and governance to do with each other?
    You should not do a thing that is as absurd as this.
    2.106.19 ஏஷ ஹி ப்ரதமோ தர்ம:
    க்ஷத்ரியஸ்யாபிஷேசநம் ।
    யேந ஸக்யம் மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞ
    ப்ரஜாநாம் பரிபாலநம் ॥
    ēṣa hi prathamō dharmaḥ
    kṣatriyasyābhiṣēcanam ।
    yēna ṡakyaṃ mahāprājña
    prajānāṃ paripālanam ॥
    A Kshatriya should, first and foremost, assume office,
    by which alone it becomes possible to
    provide governance to the people, O sagacious one!
    2.106.20 கஸ்ச ப்ரத்யக்ஷ முத்ஸ்ருஜ்ய
    ஸம்ஸயஸ்தமலக்ஷணம் ।
    ஆயதிஸ்தம் சரேத்தர்மம்
    க்ஷத்ரபந்துரநிஸ்சிதம் ॥
    kaṡca pratyakṣa mutsṛjya
    saṃṡayasthamalakṣaṇam ।
    āyatisthaṃ carēddharmaṃ
    kṣatrabanduraniṡcitam ॥
    Which Kshatriya would disregard
    a Dharma that stares right in front of the eye
    and follow one that is questionable, unsavory,
    uncertain and too remote in the future?
    2.106.21 அத க்லேஸஜமேவத்வம்
    தர்மம் சரிது மிச்சஸி ।
    தர்மேண சதுரோ வர்ணாந்
    பாலயந் க்லேஸ மாப்நுஹி ॥
    atha klēṡajamēvatvaṃ
    dharmaṃ caritu micchasi ।
    dharmēṇa caturō varṇān
    pālayan klēṡa māpnuhi ॥
    But if it is the path of Dharma strewn with
    hardships that you want to tread,
    you can have all the hardship you want
    by ruling the four Varṇas according to Dharma. This Ṡlōka describes, in one sentence, what governance of a society is all about.
    2.106.22 சதுர்ணாமாஸ்ரமாணாம் ஹி
    கார்ஹஸ்த்யம் ஸ்ரேஷ்டமாஸ்ரமம் ।
    ப்ராஹுர்தர்மஜ்ஞ தர்மஜ்ஞா:
    தம் கதம் த்யக்து மர்ஹஸி ॥
    caturṇāmāṡramāṇāṃ hi
    gārhasthyaṃ ṡrēṣṭhamāṡramam ।
    prāhurdharmajña dharmajñāḥ
    taṃ kathaṃ tyaktu marhasi ॥
    O knower of Dharma! People who know Dharma say that
    Gṛhastha Āṡrama is the best among all the four Āṡramas.
    How could you abandon it?
    2.106.23 ஸ்ருதேந பால: ஸ்தாநேந
    ஜந்மநா பவதோ ஹ்யஹம் ।
    ஸ கதம் பாலயிஷ்யாமி
    பூமிம் பவதி திஷ்டதி ॥
    ṡrutēna bālaḥ sthānēna
    janmanā bhavatō hyaham ।
    sa kathaṃ pālayiṣyāmi
    bhūmiṃ bhavati tiṣṭhati ॥
    It does not makes sense for me,
    who is younger to you in age,
    inferior in rank and in learning,
    to govern the earth, while you are there!
    2.106.24 ஹீநபுத்திகுணோ பாலோ
    ஹீந: ஸ்தாநேந சாப்யஹம் ।
    பவதா ச விநாபூதோ
    ந வர்தயிதுமுத்ஸுஹே ॥
    hīnabuddhiguṇō bālō
    hīnaḥ sthānēna cāpyaham ।
    bhavatā ca vinābhūtō
    na vartayitumutsuhē ॥
    I, a mere child, of meager intelligence,
    insignificant virtues and lower rank,
    cannot even think of living without you.
    2.106.25 இதம் நிகிலமவ்யக்ரம்
    ராஜ்யம் பித்ர்யமகண்டகம் ।
    அநுஸாதி ஸ்வதர்மேண
    தர்மஜ்ஞ ஸஹபாந்தவை: ॥
    idaṃ nikhilamavyagraṃ
    rājyaṃ pitryamakaṇṭakam ।
    anuṡādhi svadharmēṇa
    dharmajña sahabāndhavaiḥ ॥
    O Dharmajña! Rule this entire kingdom
    that came down from our father
    free of any encumbrances,
    with all the care and attention and
    in accordance with your Dharma, aided by your kin.
    2.106.26 இஹைவ த்வாऽபிஷிஞ்சந்து
    ஸர்வா: ப்ரக்ருதயஸ்ஸஹ ।
    ருத்விஜஸ்ஸவஸிஷ்டாஸ்ச
    மந்த்ரவிந்மந்த்ரகோவிதா: ॥
    ihaiva tvā'bhiṣiñcantu
    sarvāḥ prakṛtayassaha ।
    ṛtvijassavasiṣṭhāṡca
    mantravinmantrakōvidāḥ ॥
    May the Ṛtviks who are experts in Mantras
    along with Vasishṭha and all the officials,
    crown you right here, with all the Mantras!
    2.106.27 அபிஷிக்தஸ்த்வமஸ்மாபி:
    அயோத்யாம் பாலநே வ்ரஜ ।
    விஜித்ய தரஸா லோகாந்
    மருத்பிரிவ வாஸவ: ॥
    abhiṣiktastvamasmābhiḥ
    ayōdhyāṃ pālanē vraja ।
    vijitya tarasā lōkān
    marudbhiriva vāsavaḥ ॥
    Crowned, and subjugating the worlds by your might,
    go to Ayōdhyā along with us to rule
    like Vāsava accompanied by Maruts.
    2.106.28 ருணாநி த்ரீண்யபாகுர்வந்
    துர்ஹ்ருதஸ்ஸாது நிர்தஹந் ।
    ஸுஹ்ருதஸ்தர்பயந்காமை:
    த்வமேவாத்ராநுஸாதி மாம் ॥
    ṛṇāni trīṇyapākurvan
    durhṛdassādhu nirdahan ।
    suhṛdastarpayankāmaiḥ
    tvamēvātrānuṡādhi mām ॥
    While relieving yourself of the three debts,
    scorching your adversaries to the hilt and
    fulfilling the wishes of your well wishers,
    may you take me under your tutelage. The three debts mentioned here are: indebtedness to the ancestors (for continuing the lineage that led to our birth), to the Ṛshis (for guiding the society), and to the Dēvas (for talking care of the elements responsible for our existence).
    2.106.29 அத்யாऽர்ய முதிதாஸ்ஸந்து
    ஸுஹ்ருதஸ்தேऽபிஷேசநே ।
    அத்ய பீதா: பலாயந்தாம்
    துர்ஹ்ருதஸ்தே திஸோ தஸ ॥
    adyā'rya muditāssantu
    suhṛdastē'bhiṣēcanē ।
    adya bhītāḥ palāyantāṃ
    durhṛdastē diṡō daṡa ॥
    O noble one! May your friends rejoice with your crowning
    and may your adversaries, terrified, flee in the ten directions! The ten directions are North, East, South, West, Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast, up and down.
    2.106.30 ஆக்ரோஸம் மம மாதுஸ்ச
    ப்ரம்ருஜ்ய புருஷர்ஷப ।
    அத்ய தத்ர பவந்தம் ச
    பிதரம் ரக்ஷ கில்பிஷாத் ॥
    ākrōṡaṃ mama mātuṡca
    pramṛjya puruṣarṣabha ।
    adya tatra bhavantaṃ ca
    pitaraṃ rakṣa kilbiṣāt ॥
    O bull among men!
    Wipe off the world’s censure of my mother
    and save our honorable father from blame. Very sentimental and convincing, is it not?




    2.106.31 ஸிரஸா த்வாऽபியாசேऽஹம்
    குருஷ்வ கருணாம் மயி ।
    பாந்தவேஷு ச ஸர்வேஷு
    பூதேஷ்விவ மஹேஸ்வர: ॥
    ṡirasā tvā'bhiyācē'haṃ
    kuruṣva karuṇāṃ mayi ।
    bāndhavēṣu ca sarvēṣu
    bhūtēṣviva mahēṡvaraḥ ॥
    I bow my head and beseech you;
    show mercy on me and all your kin,
    like Mahēṡwara does on all creatures.
    2.106.32 அதைதத்ப்ருஷ்டத: க்ருத்வா
    வநமேவ பவாநித: ।
    கமிஷ்யதி கமிஷ்யாமி
    பவதா ஸார்தமப்யஹம் ॥
    athaitatpṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā
    vanamēva bhavānitaḥ ।
    gamiṣyati gamiṣyāmi
    bhavatā sārdhamapyaham ॥
    If you proceed to the Vana from here,
    leaving behind all of this (that I said),
    I shall follow you, right along!
    2.106.33 ததாஹி ராமோ பரதேந தாம்யதா
    ப்ரஸாத்யமாநஸ்ஸிரஸா மஹீபதி: ।
    நசைவ சக்ரே கமநாய ஸத்த்வவா-
    ந்மதிம் பிதுஸ்தத்வசநே ப்ரதிஷ்டித: ॥
    tathāhi rāmō bharatēna tāmyatā
    prasādyamānaṡṡirasā mahīpatiḥ ।
    nacaiva cakrē gamanāya sattvavā-
    nmatiṃ pitustadvacanē pratiṣṭhitaḥ ॥
    In spite of thus being beseeched
    by the weeping Bharata with bowed head for his mercy,
    the mighty lord of the earth did not yield to return,
    resolved in making his father’s word come true.
    2.106.34 ததத்புதம் ஸ்தைர்யமவேக்ஷ்ய ராகவே
    ஸமம் ஜநோ ஹர்ஷமவாப து:கித: ।
    ந யாத்யயோத்யாமிதி து:கிதோऽபவத்
    ஸ்திரப்ரதிஜ்ஞத்வமவேக்ஷ்ய ஹர்ஷித: ॥
    tadadbhutaṃ sthairyamavēkṣya rāghavē
    samaṃ janō harṣamavāpa duḥkhitaḥ ।
    na yātyayōdhyāmiti duḥkhitō'bhavat
    sthirapratijñatvamavēkṣya harṣitaḥ ॥
    Seeing that marvelous resolve of Rāghava,
    the people were at once glad and sorry;
    sorry that he would not return to Ayōdhyā,
    and glad to see his firm adherence to his vow.
    2.106.35 தம்ருத்விஜோ நைகமயூதவல்லபா-
    ஸ்ததா விஸம்ஜ்ஞாஸ்ருகலாஸ்ச மாதர: ।
    ததா ப்ருவாணம் பரதம் ப்ரதுஷ்டுவு:
    ப்ரணம்ய ராமம் ச யயாசிரே ஸஹ ॥
    tamṛtvijō naigamayūthavallabhā-
    stadā visaṃjñāṡrukalāṡca mātaraḥ ।
    tathā bruvāṇaṃ bharataṃ pratuṣṭuvuḥ
    praṇamya rāmaṃ ca yayācirē saha ॥
    The Ṛtviks and the leaders of the guilds,
    as well as the mothers who lost their senses
    and whose tears had dried up,
    praised Bharata for saying what he had said.
    All of them prostrated to Rāma and pleaded with him again.
    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே
    வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அயோத்யாகாண்டே
    ஷடுத்தரஸததமஸ்ஸர்க: ।
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē
    vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ayōdhyākāṇḍē
    ṣaḍuttaraṡatatamassargaḥ ।
    Thus concludes the one hundred and sixth Sarga
    in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.
