Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 115
In this Sarga, Bharata tells everyone that he cannot live in Ayōdhyā with the grief of Rāma's absence and would go to live in Nandigrāma. Everyone, the ministers, the Purōhitas and the army follow him, without even being asked.
Bharata anoints Rāma's sandals and regards them as a symbol of the authority entrusted in him by Rāma. He holds umbrella and weaves fly-whisks to them, and reports all matters, small and big, to them.
2.115.1 ததோ நிக்ஷிப்ய மாத: ஸ
அயோத்யாயாம் த்ருட வ்ரத: ।
பரதஸ்ஸோகஸந்தப்தோ
குரூநிதமதாப்ரவீத் ॥
tatō nikṣipya māt ḥ sa
ayōdhyāyāṃ dṛḍha vrataḥ ।
bharataṡṡōkasantaptō
gurūnidamathābravīt ॥
After having lodged his mothers in Ayōdhyā,
Bharata, who was scorched by grief,
but with his resolve unshaken,
said these words to the elders:
2.114.2 நந்திக்ராமம் கமிஷ்யாமி
ஸர்வாநாமந்த்ரயேऽத்ய வ: ।
தத்ர து:கமிதம் ஸர்வம்
ஸஹிஷ்யே ராகவம் விநா ॥
nandigrāmaṃ gamiṣyāmi
sarvānāmantrayē'dya vaḥ ।
tatra duḥkhamidaṃ sarvaṃ
sahiṣyē rāghavaṃ vinā ॥
I shall take leave of all of you.
I will go to Nandigrāma and there alone
will I be able to bear this grief
born out of Rāma’s absence.
2.115.3 கதஸ்ச வா திவம் ராஜா
வநஸ்தஸ்ச குருர்மம ।
ராமம் ப்ரதீக்ஷே ராஜ்யாய
ஸ ஹி ராஜா மஹாயஸா: ॥
gataṡca vā divaṃ rājā
vanasthaṡca gururmama ।
rāmaṃ pratīkṣē rājyāya
sa hi rājā mahāyaṡāḥ ॥
The king went to heaven.
And my elder brother is in the Vana.
I look forward to Rāma taking over the kingdom;
for that man of great renown is the real King.
2.115.4 ஏதச்ச்ருத்வா ஸுபம் வாக்யம்
பரதஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
அப்ருவந்மந்த்ரிணஸ்ஸர்வே
வஸிஷ்டஸ்ச புரோஹித: ॥
ētacchrutvā ṡubhaṃ vākyaṃ
bharatasya mahātmanaḥ ।
abruvanmantriṇassarvē
vasiṣṭhaṡca purōhitaḥ ॥
Hearing those worthy words of Mahātma Bharata,
all the ministers and Vasishṭha, the Purōhita said:
2.115.5 ஸுப்ருஸம் ஸ்லாகநீயம் ச
யதுக்தம் பரத த்வயா ।
வசநம் ப்ராத்ருவாத்ஸல்யாத்
அதநுரூபம் தவைவ தத் ॥
subhṛṡaṃ ṡlāghanīyaṃ ca
yaduktaṃ bharata tvayā ।
vacanaṃ bhrātṛvātsalyāt
adanurūpaṃ tavaiva tat ॥
What you have said, Bharata,
from love for your brother is
worthy of great and high applause;
you alone could have said it.
2.115.6 நித்யம் தே பந்துலுப்தஸ்ய
திஷ்டதோ ப்ராத்ருஸௌஹ்ருதே ।
ஆர்யமார்கம் ப்ரபந்நஸ்ய
நாநுமந்யேத க: புமாந் ॥
nityaṃ tē bandhulubdhasya
tiṣṭhatō bhrātṛsauhṛdē ।
āryamārgaṃ prapannasya
nānumanyēta kaḥ pumān ॥
You cherish your kin,
your love for your brothers is unshakable and
you have taken the path of the nobles;
who would not regard you?
2.115.7 மந்த்ரிணாம் வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா
யதாபிலஷிதம் ப்ரியம் ।
அப்ரவீத்ஸாரதிம் வாக்யம்
ரதோ மே யுஜ்யதாமிதி ॥
mantriṇāṃ vacanaṃ ṡrutvā
yathābhilaṣitaṃ priyam ।
abravītsārathiṃ vākyaṃ
rathō mē yujyatāmiti ॥
Upon hearing those pleasing words
of the ministers which was just what he hoped for,
he instructed the charioteer
to make the chariot ready.
2.115.8 ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டவதநஸ்ஸர்வா
மாதஸ்ஸமபிவாத்ய ஸ: ।
ஆருரோஹ ரதம் ஸ்ரீமாந்
ஸத்ருக்நேந ஸமந்வித: ॥
prahṛṣṭavadanassarvā
māt ssamabhivādya saḥ ।
ārurōha rathaṃ ṡrīmān
ṡatrughnēna samanvitaḥ ॥
He, the blessed one,
with happiness evident on his face
made prostrations to his mothers and
quickly got into the chariot along with Ṡatrughna.
2.115.9 ஆருஹ்ய ச ரதம் ஸீக்ரம்
ஸத்ருக்நபரதாவுபௌ ।
யயது: பரமப்ரீதௌ
வ்ருதௌ மந்த்ரிபுரோஹிதை: ॥
āruhya ca rathaṃ ṡīghraṃ
ṡatrughnabharatāvubhau ।
yayatuḥ paramaprītau
vṛtau mantripurōhitaiḥ ॥
Those extremely pleased duo of Bharata and Ṡatrughna,
got on the chariot immediately and went forth,
accompanied by the ministers and Purōhitas.
2.115.10 அக்ரதோ குரவஸ்தத்ர
வஸிஷ்டப்ரமுகா த்விஜா: ।
ப்ரயயு: ப்ராங்க்முகாஸ்ஸர்வே
நந்திக்ராமோ யதோऽபவத் ॥
agratō guravastatra
vasiṣṭhapramukhā dvijāḥ ।
prayayuḥ prāṅgmukhāssarvē
nandigrāmō yatō'bhavat ॥
Ahead of them went all the gurus
and eminent Brāhmaṇas like Vasishṭha
towards the east where Nandigrāma was situated.
2.115.11 பலம் ச ததநாஹூதம்
கஜாஸ்வரதஸங்குலம் ।
ப்ரயயௌ பரதே யாதே
ஸர்வே ச புரவாஸிந: ॥
balaṃ ca tadanāhūtaṃ
gajāṡvarathasaṅkulam ।
prayayau bharatē yātē
sarvē ca puravāsinaḥ ॥
When Bharata proceeded thus,
the army also, teeming with elephants,
horses and chariots followed him
without being summoned;
and so did all the people of the city.
2.115.12 ரதஸ்தஸ்ஸ ஹி தர்மாத்மா
பரதோ ப்ராத்ருவத்ஸல: ।
நந்திக்ராமம் யயௌ தூர்ணம்
ஸிரஸ்யாதாய பாதுகே ॥
rathasthassa hi dharmātmā
bharatō bhrātṛvatsalaḥ ।
nandigrāmaṃ yayau tūrṇaṃ
ṡirasyādāya pādukē ॥
Seated in the chariot,
carrying the sandals on his head,
Dharmātma Bharata, who loved his brother,
went expeditiously to Nandigrāma.
2.115.13 ததஸ்து பரத: க்ஷிப்ரம்
நந்திக்ராமம் ப்ரவிஸ்ய ஸ: ।
அவதீர்ய ரதாத்தூர்ணம்
குரூநிதமுவாச ஹ ॥
tatastu bharataḥ kṣipraṃ
nandigrāmaṃ praviṡya saḥ ।
avatīrya rathāttūrṇaṃ
gurūnidamuvāca ha ॥
Then, in no time, Bharata reached Nandigrāma.
Getting off the chariot immediately,
he said to the gurus:
2.115.14 ஏதத்ராஜ்யம் மம ப்ராத்ரா
தத்தம் ஸந்ந்யாஸவத்ஸ்வயம் ।
யோகக்ஷேமவஹே சேமே
பாதுகே ஹேமபூஷிதே ॥
ētadrājyaṃ mama bhrātrā
dattaṃ sannyāsavatsvayam ।
yōgakṣēmavahē cēmē
pādukē hēmabhūṣitē ॥
This kingdom was given to me for safekeeping
by my brother, on his own accord.
And these sandals, decorated in gold,
will be the guardians of its Yoga and Kshēma.
2.115.15 பரதஸ்ஸிரஸா க்ருத்வா
ஸந்ந்யாஸம் பாதுகே தத: ।
அப்ரவீத்து:கஸம்தப்த:
ஸர்வம் ப்ரக்ருதிமண்டலம் ॥
bharataṡṡirasā kṛtvā
sannyāsaṃ pādukē tataḥ ।
abravīddhuḥkhasaṃtaptaḥ
sarvaṃ prakṛtimaṇḍalam ॥
With the sandals that were in his care
placed on his head,
he spoke to all the assembled people,
as he was scorched by grief:
2.115.16 சத்ரம் தாரயத க்ஷிப்ரம்
உர்யபாதாவிமௌ மதௌ ।
ஆப்யாம் ராஜ்யே ஸ்திதோ தர்ம:
பாதுகாப்யாம் குரோர்மம ॥
chatraṃ dhārayata kṣipram
uryapādāvimau matau ।
ābhyāṃ rājyē sthitō dharmaḥ
pādukābhyāṃ gurōrmama ॥
Quickly raise the umbrella over these sandals;
look upon them as my revered elder brother's feet.
It is because of these sandals of my elder brother,
that Dharma will survive in this kingdom.
2.115.17 ப்ராத்ரா ஹி மயி ஸம்ந்யாஸோ
நிக்ஷிப்தஸ்ஸௌஹ்ருதாதயம் ।
தமிமம் பாலயிஷ்யாமி
ராகவாகமநம் ப்ரதி ॥
bhrātrā hi mayi saṃnyāsō
nikṣiptassauhṛdādayam ।
tamimaṃ pālayiṣyāmi
rāghavāgamanaṃ prati ॥
This trust has been placed in my hands
by my elder brother out of affection.
I shall take care of it,
looking forward to Rāghava’s return.
2.115.18 க்ஷிப்ரம் ஸம்யோஜயித்வாது
ராகவஸ்ய புநஸ்ஸ்வயம் ।
சரணௌ தௌ து ராமஸ்ய
த்ரக்ஷ்யாமி ஸஹபாதுகௌ ॥
kṣipraṃ saṃyōjayitvātu
rāghavasya punassvayam ।
caraṇau tau tu rāmasya
drakṣyāmi sahapādukau ॥
I shall myself, then, put on
these sandals on Rāghava’s feet;
and I shall behold Rāma’s feet
with these sandals on them.
2.115.19 ததோ நிக்ஷிப்தபாரோऽஹம்
ராகவேண ஸமாகத: ।
நிவேத்ய குரவே ராஜ்யம்
பஜிஷ்யே குருவ்ருத்திதாம் ॥
tatō nikṣiptabhārō'haṃ
rāghavēṇa samāgataḥ ।
nivēdya guravē rājyaṃ
bhajiṣyē guruvṛttitām ॥
Reunited with Rāghava,
I shall lay down my burden,
giving the kingdom back to my elder brother,
and serve him like one would an elder.
2.115.20 ராகவாய ச ஸந்யாஸம்
தத்த்வேமே வரபாதுகே ।
ராஜ்யம் சேதமயோத்யாம் ச
தூதபாபோ பவாமி ச ॥
rāghavāya ca sanyāsaṃ
dattvēmē varapādukē ।
rājyaṃ cēdamayōdhyāṃ ca
dhūtapāpō bhavāmi ca ॥
Giving these best of sandals,
the kingdom and Ayōdhyā
that are in my trust, back to Rāghava,
I shall become cleansed of all sins.
2.115.21 அபிஷிக்தே து காகுத்ஸ்தே
ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டமுதிதே ஜநே ।
ப்ரீதிர்மம யஸஸ்சைவ
பவேத்ராஜ்யாச்சதுர்குணம் ॥
abhiṣiktē tu kākutsthē
prahṛṣṭamuditē janē ।
prītirmama yaṡaṡcaiva
bhavēdrājyāccaturguṇam ॥
When Rāma is consecrated and
when people are thrilled with joy,
I shall be four times as much pleased and
earn four times as much a good name
than by ruling the kingdom.
2.115.22 ஏவம் து விலபந்தீநோ
பரதஸ்ஸமஹாயஸா: ।
நந்திக்ராமேऽகரோத்ராஜ்யம்
து:கிதோ மந்த்ரிபிஸ்ஸஹ ॥
ēvaṃ tu vilapandīnō
bharatassamahāyaṡāḥ ।
nandigrāmē'karōdrājyaṃ
duḥkhitō mantribhissaha ॥
Heartbroken and pitifully lamenting thus,
Bharata of great renown, along with his ministers,
ruled the kingdom from Nandigrāma.
2.115.23 ஸ வல்கலஜடாதாரீ
முநிவேஷதர: ப்ரபு: ।
நந்திக்ராமேऽவஸத்வீர:
ஸஸைந்யோ பரதஸ்ததா ॥
sa valkalajaṭādhārī
munivēṣadharaḥ prabhuḥ ।
nandigrāmē'vasadvīraḥ
sasainyō bharatastadā ॥
Bharata, the Veera, the lord,
along with his army, stayed in Nandigrāma,
sporting the attire of a Muni
wearing matted locks and clad in robes of bark.
2.115.24 ராமாகமநமாகாங்க்ஷந்
பரதோ ப்ராத்ருவத்ஸல: ।
ப்ராதுர்வசநகாரீ ச
ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாபாரகஸ்ததா ॥
பாதுகேத்வபிஷிச்யாத
நந்திக்ராமேऽவஸத்ததா ।
rāmāgamanamākāṅkṣan
bharatō bhrātṛvatsalaḥ ।
bhrāturvacanakārī ca
pratijńāpāragastathā ॥
pādukētvabhiṣicyātha
nandigrāmē'vasattadā ।
Having consecrated the sandals, Bharata,
who loved his brother and carried out his commands,
lived in Nandigrāma, yearning for Rāma’s return
and carrying out his own pledge to its completion.
2.115.25 ஸ வாலவ்யஜநம் சத்ரம்
தாரயாமாஸ ஸ ஸ்வயம்
பரதஸ்ஸாஸநம் ஸர்வம்
பாதுகாப்யாம் நிவேதயந் ॥
sa vālavyajanaṃ chatraṃ
dhārayāmāsa sa svayaṃ
bharataṡṡāsanaṃ sarvaṃ
pādukābhyāṃ nivēdayan ॥
Holding an umbrella and waving fly-whisks to them himself,
he reported all matters to those sandals.
2.115.26 ததஸ்து பரதஸ்ஸ்ரீமாந்
அபிஷிச்யார்யபாதுகே ।
தததீநஸ்ததா ராஜ்யம்
காரயாமாஸ ஸர்வதா ॥
tatastu bharataṡṡrīmān
abhiṣicyāryapādukē ।
tadadhīnastadā rājyaṃ
kārayāmāsa sarvadā ॥
Having thus anointed the sandals of the noble one,
Bharata, the blessed one, got all
the business of the realm done under their aegis.
2.115.27 ததா ஹி யத்கார்யமுபைதி கிஞ்சி-
துபாயநம் சோபஹ்ருதம் மஹார்ஹம் ।
ஸ பாதுகாப்யாம் ப்ரதமம் நிவேத்ய
சகார பஸ்சாத்பரதோ யதாவத் ॥
tadā hi yatkāryamupaiti kińci-
dupāyanaṃ cōpahṛtaṃ mahārham ।
sa pādukābhyāṃ prathamaṃ nivēdya
cakāra paṡcādbharatō yathāvat ॥
Bharata presented everything,
whether it was a small task that just came up
or a great idea that needed serious consideration,
first to the sandals and then only followed upon them.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே
வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே
பஞ்சதஸோத்தரஸததமஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē
vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē
pańcadaṡōttaraṡatatamassargaḥ ।
Thus concludes the one hundred and fifteenth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
