Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 5
In this Sarga, Rāma goes to Ṡarabhaṅga. There he sees a mesmerizing wonder. He sees Indra alighting from a chariot that is floating in the air without touching the ground. He goes forward to find out who it is. Indra notices Rāma coming towards him. He does not want to see Rāma till Rāma completes his mission (Rāma cannot kill Rāvaṇa if he takes any assistance from Dēvas) and takes leave of Ṡarabhaṅga and goes to heaven.
Rāma then meets Ṡarabhaṅga and asks him about the visit of Indra. Ṡarabhaṅga tells that Indra came to take him to the abode of Brahma, but he stayed back to see Rāma. Ṡarabhaṅga tells Rāma to see Suteekshṇa, who would help him with a place to stay in the Vana.
Ṡarabhaṅga then enters the fire, consigning his body to it. After the fire completely consumes his body, he rises from it as a young man of supreme radiance and then ascends to the world of Brahma and Brahma welcomes him.
3.5.1-2a ஹத்வா து தம் பீமபலம்
விராதம் ராக்ஷஸம் வநே ।
ததஸ்ஸீதாம் பரிஷ்வஜ்ய
ஸமாஸ்வாஸ்ய ச வீர்யவாந் ।
அப்ரவீல்லக்ஷ்மணம் ராமோ
ப்ராதரம் தீப்ததேஜஸம் ॥
hatvā tu taṃ bhīmabalaṃ
virādhaṃ rākṣasaṃ vanē ।
tatassītāṃ pariṣvajya
samāṡvāsya ca vīryavān ।
abravīllakṣmaṇaṃ rāmō
bhrātaraṃ dīptatējasam ॥
Having killed Virādha,
the Rākshasa of terrible strength in the Vana,
and having given a hug and comforted Seetā,
the valiant Rāma said to his brother,
Lakshmaṇa, of scorching splendor:
3.5.2b-3a கஷ்டம் வநமிதம் துர்கம்
ந ச ஸ்மோ வநகோசரா: ।
அபிகச்சாமஹே ஸீக்ரம்
ஸரபங்கம் தபோதநம் ॥
kaṣṭaṃ vanamidaṃ durgaṃ
na ca smō vanagōcarāḥ ।
abhigacchāmahē ṡīghraṃ
ṡarabhaṅgaṃ tapōdhanam ॥
This Vana, an impenetrable tangle, is very inhospitable,
and we are not used to the life of Vana.
Let us go quick to Ṡarabhaṅga, the one rich with Tapa!
3.5.3b-4 ஆஸ்ரமம் ஸரபங்கஸ்ய
ராகவோऽபிஜகாம ஹ ।
தஸ்ய தேவப்ரபாவஸ்ய
தபஸா பாவிதாத்மந: ।
ஸமீபே ஸரபங்கஸ்ய
ததர்ஸ மஹதத்புதம் ॥
āṡramaṃ ṡarabhaṅgasya
rāghavō'bhijagāma ha ।
tasya dēvaprabhāvasya
tapasā bhāvitātmanaḥ ।
samīpē ṡarabhaṅgasya
dadarṡa mahadadbhutam ॥
And Rāghava went to Ṡarabhaṅga's Āṡrama.
(There) he saw a mesmerizing wonder,
near Ṡarabhaṅga of divine presence
and who had realized the Self through Tapa.
3.5.5-7a விப்ராஜமாநம் வபுஷா
ஸூர்யவைஸ்வாநரோபமம் ।
அவருஹ்யரதோத்ஸங்காத்
ஆகாஸே விபுதேஸ்வரம் ।
அஸம்ஸ்ப்ருஸந்தம் வஸுதாம்
ததர்ஸ விபுதேஸ்வரம் ।
ஸம்ப்ரபாபரணம் தேவம்
விரஜோऽம்பரதாரிணம் ।
தத்விதைரேவ பஹுபி:
பூஜ்யமாநம் மஹாத்மபி: ॥
vibhrājamānaṃ vapuṣā
sūryavaiṡvānarōpamam ।
avaruhyarathōtsaṅgāt
ākāṡē vibudhēṡvaram ।
asaṃspṛṡantaṃ vasudhāṃ
dadarṡa vibudhēṡvaram ।
saṃprabhābharaṇaṃ dēvaṃ
virajō'mbaradhāriṇam ।
tadvidhairēva bahubhiḥ
pūjyamānaṃ mahātmabhiḥ ॥
He saw the divine lord of Dēvas,
whose body was as radiant as the sun and fire
and who alighted from an excellent chariot
that was floating in the sky
without touching the ground.
His ornaments were sparkling
and his garments were spotless.
Many Mahātmas, who resembled him in appearance
were paying respects to him.
3.5.7b-8a ஹரிதைர்வாஜிபிர்யுக்தம்
அந்தரிக்ஷகதம் ரதம் ।
ததர்ஸாதூரதஸ்தஸ்ய
தருணாதித்யஸந்நிபம் ॥
haritairvājibhiryuktaṃ
antarikṣagataṃ ratham ।
dadarṡādūratastasya
taruṇādityasannibham ॥
He saw the chariot, poised in the sky,
not far from there, yoked with green horses,
and shining like the morning sun.
3.5.8b-9a அபஸ்யத்விமலம் சத்ரம்
சித்ரமால்யோபஸோபிதம் ।
பாண்டுராப்ரகநப்ரக்யம்
சந்த்ரமண்டலஸந்நிபம் ॥
apaṡyadvimalaṃ chatraṃ
citramālyōpaṡōbhitam ।
pāṇḍurābhraghanaprakhyaṃ
candramaṇḍalasannibham ॥
He saw, too, a spotlessly white umbrella
decked with a variety of garlands
that glittered like white clouds and
resembled the orb of the moon.
3.5.9b-10a சாமரவ்யஜநே சாக்ர்யே
ருக்மதண்டே மஹாதநே ।
க்ருஹீதே வரநாரீப்யாம்
தூயமாநே ச மூர்தநி ॥
cāmaravyajanē cāgryē
rukmadaṇḍē mahādhanē ।
gṛhītē varanārībhyāṃ
dhūyamānē ca mūrdhani ॥
Two priceless fly-whisks with gold handles
were being fanned over his head by beautiful women.
3.5.10b-11a கந்தர்வாமரஸித்தாஸ்ச
பஹவ: பரமர்ஷய: ।
அந்தரிக்ஷகதம் தேவம்
வாக்பிரக்ய்ராபிரீடிரே ॥
gandharvāmarasiddhāṡca
bahavaḥ paramarṣayaḥ ।
antarikṣagataṃ dēvaṃ
vāgbhiragyrābhirīḍirē ॥
Gandharvas, Dēvas and Siddhas,
as well as many Maharshis,
were extolling him with superb hymns,
as that Dēva stood poised in mid-air.
3.5.11b-12 ராமோऽத ரதமுத்திஸ்ய
ப்ராதுர்தர்ஸயதாத்புதம் ।
அர்சிஷ்மந்தம் ஸ்ரியா ஜுஷ்டம்
அத்புதம் பஸ்ய லக்ஷ்மண ।
ப்ரதபந்தமிவாதித்யம்
அந்தரிக்ஷகதம் ரதம் ॥
rāmō'tha rathamuddiṡya
bhrāturdarṡayatādbhutam ।
arciṣmantaṃ ṡriyā juṣṭam
adbhutaṃ paṡya lakṣmaṇa ।
pratapantamivādityam
antarikṣagataṃ ratham ॥
Then, pointing out the marvelous
chariot to his brother, Rāma said:
‘Look at that wonderful chariot, Lakshmaṇa,
stationed in the air and blazing like
the scorching sun in its splendor'.
3.5.13 யே ஹயா: புருஹூதஸ்ய
புரா ஸக்ரஸ்ய நஸ்ஸ்ருதா: ।
அந்தரிக்ஷகதா திவ்யா:
தே இமே ஹரயோ த்ருவம் ॥
yē hayāḥ puruhūtasya
purā ṡakrasya naṡṡrutāḥ ।
antarikṣagatā divyāḥ
tē imē harayō dhruvam ॥
These divine horses that are poised in the sky
are surely the same as those
we have heard of as belonging to Ṡakra
that were called upon in many Yajñas.
3.5.14-16 இமே ச புருஷவ்யாக்ர
யே திஷ்டந்த்யபிதோ திஸம் ।
ஸதம் ஸதம் குண்டலிநோ
யுவாந: கங்கபாணய: ॥
விஸ்தீர்ணவிபுலோரஸ்கா:
பரிகாயதபாஹவ: ।
ஸோணாம்ஸுவஸநாஸ்ஸர்வே
வ்யாத்ரா இவ துராஸதா: ॥
உரோதேஸேஷு ஸர்வேஷாம்
ஹாரா ஜ்வலநஸந்நிபா: ।
ரூபம் பிப்ரதி ஸௌமித்ரே
பஞ்சவிம்ஸதிவார்ஷிகம் ॥
imē ca puruṣavyāghra
yē tiṣṭhantyabhitō diṡam ।
ṡataṃ ṡataṃ kuṇḍalinō
yuvānaḥ khaṅgapāṇayaḥ ॥
vistīrṇavipulōraskāḥ
parighāyatabāhavaḥ ।
ṡōṇāṃṡuvasanāssarvē
vyādhrā iva durāsadāḥ ॥
urōdēṡēṣu sarvēṣāṃ
hārā jvalanasannibhāḥ ।
rūpaṃ bibhrati saumitrē
pañcaviṃṡativārṣikam ॥
And, O Lakshmaṇa, O tiger among men,
these youths, standing in every direction in hundreds
armed with sword and wearing ear-pendants,
their wide chests and long arms resembling iron clubs,
clad in scarlet red, invincible like tigers,
wearing chains that shine like fire on their chests,
all look like twenty five year olds.
3.5.17 ஏதத்தி கில தேவாநாம்
வயோ பவதி நித்யதா ।
யதேமே புருஷவ்யாக்ரா
த்ருஸ்யந்தே ப்ரியதர்ஸநா: ॥
ētaddi kila dēvānāṃ
vayō bhavati nityadā ।
yathēmē puruṣavyāghrā
dṛṡyantē priyadarṡanāḥ ॥
This is how the Dēvas, who always remain young, look,
charming and like tigers among men!
3.5.18 இஹைவ ஸஹ வைதேஹ்யா
முஹூர்தம் திஷ்ட லக்ஷ்மண ।
யாவஜ்ஜாநாம்யஹம் வ்யக்தம்
க ஏஷ த்யுதிமாந்ரதே ॥
ihaiva saha vaidēhyā
muhūrtaṃ tiṣṭha lakṣmaṇa ।
yāvajjānāmyahaṃ vyaktaṃ
ka ēṣa dyutimānrathē ॥
Stay here, O Lakshmaṇa, for a moment along with Vaidēhi!
I will find out, for certain,
who this radiant one by the chariot is.
3.5.19 தமேவமுக்த்வா ஸௌமித்ரிமம்
இஹைவ ஸ்தீயதாமிதி ।
அபிசக்ராம காகுத்ஸ்த:
ஸரபங்காஸ்ரமம் ப்ரதி ॥
tamēvamuktvā saumitrimaṃ
ihaiva sthīyatāmiti ।
abhicakrāma kākutsthaḥ
ṡarabhaṅgāṡramaṃ prati ॥
Instructing Sowmitri, to stay right here,
Kakutstha went towards the Āṡrama of Ṡarabhaṅga.
3.5.20 ததஸ்ஸமபிகச்சந்தம்
ப்ரேக்ஷ்ய ராமம் ஸசீபதி: ।
ஸரபங்கமநுப்ராப்ய
விபுதாநிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
tatassamabhigacchantaṃ
prēkṣya rāmaṃ ṡacīpatiḥ ।
ṡarabhaṅgamanuprāpya
vibudhānidamabravīt ॥
Then, seeing Rāma thus coming towards him,
the lord of Ṡacee took leave of Ṡarabhaṅga
and said these words to the Dēvas:
3.5.21 யாஸ்யாம்யஹமயம் ராமோ
யாவந்மாம் நாபிபாஷதே ।
க்ருதார்தம்மேநமசிராத்
த்ரஷ்டாஸ்ம்யஹமரிந்தமம் ॥
yāsyāmyahamayaṃ rāmō
yāvanmāṃ nābhibhāṣatē ।
kṛtārthaṃmēnamacirāt
draṣṭāsmyahamarindamam ॥
I shall leave before Rāma talks to me.
I will see him in short order,
after he accomplishes the mission.
3.5.22 கர்ம ஹ்யநேந கர்தவ்யம்
மஹத்தேவைஸ்ஸுதுஷ்கரம் ।
நிஷ்டாம் ந யதோ யாவத்தி
தாவந்ந த்ரஷ்டுமர்ஹதி ॥
karma hyanēna kartavyaṃ
mahaddēvaissuduṣkaram ।
niṣṭhāṃ na yatō yāvaddi
tāvanna draṣṭumarhati ॥
He has a great task to accomplish
that is impossible even for Dēvas.
I shall not see him until he accomplishes it.
3.5.23 அத வஜ்ரீ தமாமந்த்ர்ய
மாநயித்வா ச தாபஸம் ।
ரதேந ஹயயுக்தேந
யயௌ திவமரிந்தம: ॥
atha vajrī tamāmantrya
mānayitvā ca tāpasam ।
rathēna hayayuktēna
yayau divamarindamaḥ ॥
Then, (Indra) the subduer of foes and the wielder of Vajra
paid respects and took leave of the Tapasvi
and went away to heaven,
on that chariot drawn by horses.
3.5.24 ப்ரயாதே து ஸஹஸ்ராக்ஷே
ராகவஸ்ஸபரிச்சத: ।
அக்நிஹோத்ரமுபாஸீநம்
ஸரபங்கமுபாகமத் ॥
prayātē tu sahasrākṣē
rāghavassaparicchadaḥ ।
agnihōtramupāsīnaṃ
ṡarabhaṅgamupāgamat ॥
As (Indra) the thousand-eyes one left thus,
Rāma, along with his people, went to
Ṡarabhaṅga, who was by the ritual fire.
