    Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 25
In this Sarga, the fearsome battle starts between Khara's army and Rāma. Khara's army rains showers of weapons, arrows, boulders and trees. Rāma breaks them into pieces and cuts off the heads, arms, thighs of the army. Rākshasas by the thousands fall dead. The surviving Rākshasas run to Dūshaṇa seeking refuge. Dūshaṇa consoles them and rallies them again against Rāma.

    dadarṡā'ṡramamāgamya
    kharassaha purassaraiḥ ॥
Khara came to the Āṡrama. He and
his followers who were walking ahead with him
saw Rāma in ire, ready to kill the enemy,
    with his bow held upright.

    rāmasyābhimukhaṃ sūtaṃ

On seeing Rāma, Khara lifted his bow
with the arrow (mounted on it),
    and rumbling harshly, he told
his charioteer to drive up to Rāma.

    Following the order of Khara,

Khara, seated in his chariot among the Rākshasas,
    looked like the planet Mars
    risen among the constellations.

    rāmaṃ nānāvidhaiḥ ṡassraiḥ
    abhyavarṣanta durjayam ॥
And all those night-rovers in their rage
rained down upon the invincible Rama of the terrible bow,
a shower of weapons of every kind.

    rākṣasāssamarē rāmaṃ

In all their fury, the Rākshasas fought
    by hitting Rāma with Mudgaras,
    Paṭṭisas, spears, Prasas and Paraṡus.

    rāmaṃ yuddhē jighāṃsavaḥ ॥
Those Rākshasas of immense strength, gigantic like clouds,
    mounted on chariots, horses and
elephants that were as big as mountain crests,
dashed towards Rama to slay him, making loud noises.

    The hordes of Rākshasas
rained showers of arrows on Rāma,
like clouds battering a mountain with torrential rains.

    Surrounded by those terrible
    Rākshasa hordes from all directions,
Rāghava looked liked the Mahā Dēva
surrounded by the Gaṇas, his followers.

    tāni muktāni ṡastrāṇi
    yātudhānaissarāghavaḥ ।
    pratijagrāha viṡikhaiḥ
    nadyōghāniva sāgaraḥ ॥
Rāghava took in all those weapons
    hurled by the Rākshasas,
    with his (torrents of) arrows,
as the ocean would take in the inflow of rivers.

    bhinnagātrō na vivyathē ।
    rāmaḥ pradīptairbahubhiḥ
    vajrairiva mahācalaḥ ॥
    Though his body was pierced
    by those horrid weapons,
Rāma was no more distraught by them
than a great mountain struck by
    many a shining thunderbolt would.

    sa viddhaḥ kṣatajādigdhaḥ
    sarvagātrēṣu rāghavaḥ ।
    babhūva rāmaḥ sandhyābhraiḥ
    divākara ivāvṛtaḥ ॥
Hit in every part of the body and bleeding,
    Rāghava looked like the sun
    covered by the evening clouds.
    viṣēdurdēvagandharvāḥ
    siddhāṡca paramarṣayaḥ ।
    ēkaṃ sahasrairbahubhiḥ
    tadā dṛṣṭvā samāvṛtam ॥
Seeing one man thus hemmed in by many thousands,
Dēvas, Gandharvas, Siddhas and the great Ṛshis felt sad.

    tatō rāmassusaṅkṛddhō
    maṇḍalīkṛtakārmukaḥ ।
    sasarja niṡitānbāṇān
    ṡataṡō'tha sahasraṡa ॥
    Then, Rāma, extremely enraged,
bent his bow almost to a semi-circle and
shot hundreds and thousands of sharp arrows.

    durāvārāndurviṣahān
    kāladaṇḍōpamān raṇē ।
    mumōca līlayā rāmaḥ
    kaṅkapatrānajihmagān ॥
Rāma, in that fight, shot arrows that
were winged with feathers of the falcon and
comparable to the rod of Death, effortlessly.
They flew straight and could not be stopped
    and were extremely unbearable.
    tē ṡarāṡṡatrusainyēṣu
    muktā rāmēṇa līlayā ।
    ādadū rakṣasāṃ prāṇān
    pāṡāḥ kālakṛtā iva ॥
Those arrows, playfully let loose by Rāma
among the army of the enemy,
took the lives of the Rākshasas
like the noose of Death would.
    bhittvā rākṣasadēhāṃstān
    tē ṡarā rudhirāplutāḥ ।
    antarikṣagatā rējuḥ
    dīptāgnisamatējasaḥ ॥
Splitting the bodies of the Rākshasas,
    those arrows, bathed in blood,
flew into the air with the
glow of the blaze of a fire.
