Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 26
In this Sarga, the battle between Khara's forces and Rāma continues. Dūshaṇa sends more Rākshasas to fight with Rāma. The Rākshasas rain showers of arrows, weapons, trees and boulders on Rāma. Rāma responds with a torrent of arrows breaking those weapons and cutting off their heads. Rāma then slays the horses and charioteer and then cuts of Dūshaṇa's arms and Dūshaṇa falls. Then other leaders of the army, like Mahākapāla and Sthūlāksha, fight with Rāma. And Rāma kills them all.
Seeing that loss, Khara orders another twelve leaders of the army like Ṡyēnagāmi and Pṛthugreeva to fight with Rāma, taking more forces with them. Rāma kills all of them.
With everyone killed, and the Vana looking terrible with the fallen Rākshasas, only Rāma, Khara and another Rākshasa by name Triṡira are left standing. Then Khara advances against Rāma in his imposing chariot.
3.26.1-2a தூஷணஸ்து ஸ்வகம் ஸைந்யம்
ஹந்யமாநம் நிரீக்ஷ்ய ஸ: ।
ஸந்திதேஸ மஹாபாஹு:
பீமவேகாந்துராஸதாந் ।
ராக்ஷஸாந்பஞ்சஸாஹஸ்ராந்
ஸமரேஷ்வநிவர்திந: ॥
dūṣaṇastu svakaṃ sainyaṃ
hanyamānaṃ nirīkṣya saḥ ।
sandidēṡa mahābāhuḥ
bhīmavēgāndurāsadān ।
rākṣasānpańcasāhasrān
samarēṣvanivartinaḥ ॥
Dūshaṇa, seeing his army being decimated,
ordered into action five thousand
Rākshasas, the night-rovers,
who were of terrific speed
and would never run away from battle.
3.26.2b-3a தே ஸூலை: பட்டிஸை: கட்கை:
ஸிலாவர்ஷைர்த்ருமைரபி ।
ஸரவர்ஷைரவிச்சிந்நம்
வவர்ஷுஸ்தம் ஸமந்தத: ॥
tē ṡūlaiḥ paṭṭisaiḥ khaḍgaiḥ
ṡilāvarṣairdrumairapi ।
ṡaravarṣairavicchinnaṃ
vavarṣustaṃ samantataḥ ॥
They rained incessant showers of
spears, Paṭṭisas, swords,
rocks, trees and arrows from all sides.
3.26.3b-4a ஸ த்ருமாணாம் ஸிலாநாம் ச
வர்ஷம் ப்ராணஹரம் மஹத் ।
ப்ரதிஜக்ராஹ தர்மாத்மா
ராகவஸ்தீக்ஷ்ணஸாயகை: ॥
sa dṛmāṇāṃ ṡilānāṃ ca
varṣaṃ prāṇaharaṃ mahat ।
pratijagrāha dharmātmā
rāghavastīkṣṇasāyakaiḥ ॥
Rāghava, the Dharmātma, responded to
that deadly storm of trees and rocks
with his sharp arrows.
3.26.4b-5a ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ய ச தத்வர்ஷம்
நிமீலித இவர்ஷப: ।
ராம: க்ரோதம் பரம் லேபே
வதார்தம் ஸர்வரக்ஷஸாம் ॥
pratigṛhya ca tadvarṣaṃ
nimīlita ivarṣabhaḥ ।
rāmaḥ krōdhaṃ paraṃ lēbhē
vadhārthaṃ sarvarakṣasām ॥
Rāma took that downpour as easily as
a bull (would a rain) with closed eyes.
He was so incensed that he
was determined to kill all those Rākshasas.
3.26.5b-6a தத: க்ரோதஸமாவிஷ்ட:
ப்ரதீப்த இவ தேஜஸா ।
ஸரைரவாகிரத்ஸைந்யம்
ஸர்வதஸ்ஸஹதூஷணம் ॥
tataḥ krōdhasamāviṣṭaḥ
pradīpta iva tējasā ।
ṡarairavākiratsainyaṃ
sarvatassahadūṣaṇam ॥
Blazing with power in his overwhelming anger,
he rained arrows on the army and Dūshaṇa from every direction.
3.26.6b-7a ததஸ்ஸேநாபதி: க்ருத்தோ
தூஷணஸ்ஸத்ருதூஷண: ।
ஸரைரஸநிகல்பைஸ்தம்
ராகவம் ஸமவாகிரத் ॥
tatassēnāpatiḥ kruddhō
dūṣaṇaṡṡatrudūṣaṇaḥ ।
ṡarairaṡanikalpaistaṃ
rāghavaṃ samavākirat ॥
In response, Dūshaṇa, the enraged chief of army,
the tormenter of foe, drenched Rāghava
with arrows that were like thunderbolts.
3.26.7b-8a ததோ ராமஸ்ஸுஸங்க்ருத்த:
க்ஷுரேணாஸ்ய மஹத்தநு: ।
சிச்சேத ஸமரே வீர:
சதுர்பிஸ்சதுரோ ஹயாந் ॥
tatō rāmassusaṅkṛddhaḥ
kṣurēṇāsya mahaddhanuḥ ।
cicchēda samarē vīraḥ
caturbhiṡcaturō hayān ॥
Then, Rāma the Veera, even more enraged,
smashed his (Dūshaṇa's) great bow
with a razor sharp arrow.
With four more arrows, he killed the four horses.
3.26.8b-9a ஹத்வா சாஸ்வாந்ஸரைஸ்தீக்ஷ்ணை:
அர்தசந்த்ரேண ஸாரதே: ।
ஸிரோ ஜஹார தத்ரக்ஷ:
த்ரிபிர்விவ்யாத வக்ஷஸி ॥
hatvā cāṡvānṡaraistīkṣṇaiḥ
ardhacandrēṇa sārathēḥ ।
ṡirō jahāra tadrakṣaḥ
tribhirvivyādha vakṣasi ॥
Killing the horses with sharp arrows,
he then cut off the head of the charioteer
with an arrow of crescent shaped head,
and hit the Rākshasa (Dūshaṇa)
on the breast with three arrows.
3.26.9b-11 ஸ ச்சிந்நதந்வா விரதோ
ஹதாஸ்வோ ஹதஸாரதி: ।
ஜக்ராஹ கிரிஸ்ருங்காபம்
பரிகம் ரோமஹர்ஷணம் ।
வேஷ்டிதம் காஞ்சநை: பட்டை:
தேவஸைந்யப்ரமர்தநம் ।
ஆயஸைஸ்ஸங்குபிஸ்தீக்ஷ்ணை:
கீர்ணம் பரவஸோக்ஷிதம் ।
வஜ்ராஸநிஸமஸ்பர்ஸம்
பரகோபுரதாரணம் ॥
sa cchinnadhanvā virathō
hatāṡvō hatasārathiḥ ।
jagrāha giriṡṛṅgābhaṃ
parighaṃ rōmaharṣaṇam ।
vēṣṭitaṃ kāńcanaiḥ paṭṭaiḥ
dēvasainyapramardanam ।
āyasaiṡṡaṅkubhistīkṣṇaiḥ
kīrṇaṃ paravasōkṣitam ।
vajrāṡanisamasparṡaṃ
paragōpuradāraṇam ॥
With his bow broken, his horses and charioteer killed,
he took a Parigha, which looked like a mountain crest,
which had hammered the forces of the Dēvas many a time
and the sight of which made one’s hair stand on end.
The Parigha, which was smeared
with the fat of the enemies,
which smashed the towers of enemies,
which was like lightning and thunderbolt,
was decorated with gold bands around it
and was studded with sharp iron nails.
3.26.12 தம் மஹோரகஸங்காஸம்
ப்ரக்ருஹ்ய பரிகம் ரணே ।
தூஷணோऽப்யத்ரவத்ராமம்
க்ரூரகர்மா நிஸாசர: ॥
taṃ mahōragasaṅkāṡaṃ
pragṛhya parighaṃ raṇē ।
dūṣaṇō'bhyadravadrāmaṃ
krūrakarmā niṡācaraḥ ॥
That night-roving Dūshaṇa of cruel deeds
then dashed towards Rāma in that fight,
wielding that Parigha,
which resembled a mighty serpent.
3.26.13 தஸ்யாபிபதமாநஸ்ய
தூஷணஸ்ய ஸ ராகவ: ।
த்வாப்யாம் ஸராப்யாம் சிச்சேத
ஸஹஸ்தாபரணௌ புஜௌ ॥
tasyābhipatamānasya
dūṣaṇasya sa rāghavaḥ ।
dvābhyāṃ ṡarābhyāṃ cicchēda
sahastābharaṇau bhujau ॥
As he came thus on a headlong course,
Rāghava severed Dūshaṇa's arms
decked with ornaments, with two arrows.
3.26.14 ப்ரஷ்டஸ்தஸ்ய மஹாகாய:
பபாத ரணமூர்தநி ।
பரிகஸ்சிந்நஹஸ்தஸ்ய
ஸக்ரத்வஜ இவாக்ரத: ॥
bhraṣṭastasya mahākāyaḥ
papāta raṇamūrdhani ।
parighaṡchinnahastasya
ṡakradhvaja ivāgrataḥ ॥
The massive Parigha
slipped from the severed hand and
fell down in the front of battle ground
like the flagstaff of Indra.
3.26.15 ஸ கராப்யாம் விகீர்ணாப்யாம்
பபாத புவி தூஷண: ।
விஷாணாப்யாம் விஸீர்ணாப்யாம்
மநஸ்வீவ மஹாகஜ: ॥
sa karābhyāṃ vikīrṇābhyāṃ
papāta bhuvi dūṣaṇaḥ ।
viṣāṇābhyāṃ viṡīrṇābhyāṃ
manasvīva mahāgajaḥ ॥
With his arms blown apart,
Dūshaṇa fell down like a
giant prideful tusker with its tusks broken.
3.26.16 தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா பதிதம் பூமௌ
தூஷணம் நிஹதம் ரணே ।
ஸாதுஸாத்விதி காகுத்ஸ்தம்
ஸர்வபூதாந்யபூஜயந் ॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā patitaṃ bhūmau
dūṣaṇaṃ nihataṃ raṇē ।
sādhusādhviti kākutsthaṃ
sarvabhūtānyapūjayan ॥
Seeing Dūshaṇa thus killed
and fallen down on the ground in battle,
all beings praised Kākutstha saying:
‘ Well Done! Well Done!’
3.26.17-19a ஏதஸ்மிந்நந்தரே க்ருத்தா:
த்ரய: ஸேநாக்ரயாயிந: ।
ஸம்ஹ்ருத்யாப்யத்ரவந் ராமம்
ம்ருத்யுபாஸாவபாஸிதா: ।
மஹாகபால: ஸ்தூலாக்ஷ:
ப்ரமாதீ ச மஹாபல: ।
மஹாகபாலோ விபுலம்
ஸூலமுத்யம்ய ராக்ஷஸ: ।
ஸ்தூலாக்ஷ: பட்டிஸம் க்ருஹ்ய
ப்ரமாதீ ச பரஸ்வதம் ॥
ētasminnantarē kruddhāḥ
trayaḥ sēnāgrayāyinaḥ ।
saṃhṛtyābhyadravan rāmaṃ
mṛtyupāṡāvapāṡitāḥ ।
mahākapālaḥ sthūlākṣaḥ
pramāthī ca mahābalaḥ ।
mahākapālō vipulaṃ
ṡūlamudyamya rākṣasaḥ ।
sthūlākṣaḥ paṭṭisaṃ gṛhya
pramāthī ca paraṡvadham ॥
Meanwhile, three leaders of the army,
Mahākapāla, Sthūlāksha and
the mighty strong Pramāthi
got together in rage,
and with the noose of death
tightening around their necks,
dashed directly onto Rāma;
with Mahākapāla lifting a huge spear,
the Rākshasa Sthūlāksha taking a Paṭṭisa,
and Pramāthi, a Paraṡu.
