Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 29
In this Sarga, Rāma taunts Khara for harrowing the Ṛshis of Daṇḍaka Araṇya. He tells Khara that anyone who commits evil deeds will pay for them when the time is ripe. He tells Khara that death is certain for him at his hands.
Khara becomes furious. He sneers at Rāma saying that only a lowly Kshatriya like Rāma would indulge in self-praise like he did. Then he hurls his flaming club at Rāma and Rāma shatters it into pieces with his arrows.
3.29.1 கரம் து விரதம் ராமோ
கதாபாணிமவஸ்திதம் ।
ம்ருதுபூர்வம் மஹாதேஜா:
பருஷம் வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
kharaṃ tu virathaṃ rāmō
gadāpāṇimavasthitam ।
mṛdupūrvaṃ mahātējāḥ
paruṣaṃ vākyamabravīt ॥
Rāma of immense strength, rebuked Khara,
who no more had a chariot
and stood with his club in the hand,
in strong words, though in a gentle manner.
3.29.2 கஜாஸ்வரதஸம்பாதே
பலே மஹதி திஷ்டதா ।
க்ருதம் ஸுதாருணம் கர்ம
ஸர்வலோகஜுகுப்ஸிதம் ॥
gajāṡvarathasambādhē
balē mahati tiṣṭhatā ।
kṛtaṃ sudāruṇaṃ karma
sarvalōkajugupsitam ॥
Commanding a great force teeming with
elephants, chariots and horses,
you committed a dastardly act
that is repulsive to the entire world.
3.29.3 உத்வேஜநீயோ பூதாநாம்
ந்ருஸம்ஸ: பாபகர்மக்ருத் ।
த்ரயாணாமபி லோகாநாம்
ஈஸ்வரோऽபி ந திஷ்டதி ॥
udvējanīyō bhūtānāṃ
nṛṡaṃsaḥ pāpakarmakṛt ।
trayāṇāmapi lōkānām
īṡvarō'pi na tiṣṭhati ॥
A cruel person, even if he were
to be the lord of all the three worlds,
cannot go on forever doing evil deeds
and terrorizing all beings.
3.29.4 கர்ம லோகவிருத்தம் து
குர்வாணம் க்ஷணதாசர ।
தீக்ஷ்ணம் ஸர்வஜநோ ஹந்தி
ஸர்பம் துஷ்டமிவாகதம் ॥
karma lōkaviruddhaṃ tu
kurvāṇaṃ kṣaṇadācara ।
tīkṣṇaṃ sarvajanō hanti
sarpaṃ duṣṭamivāgatam ॥
O Rākshasa! Anyone who is
cruel and against the world
will be killed by everyone,
just as a vicious serpent
that sways into their midst would be.
3.29.5 லோபாத்பாபாநி குர்வாண:
காமாத்வா யோ ந புத்யதே ।
ப்ரஷ்ட: பஸ்யதி தஸ்யாந்தம்
ப்ராஹ்மணீ கரகாதிவ ॥
lōbhātpāpāni kurvāṇaḥ
kāmādvā yō na budhyatē ।
bhraṣṭaḥ paṡyati tasyāntaṃ
brāhmaṇī karakādiva ॥
Those who commit sinful deeds
driven by greed and lust
and never realize what they do
will surely face the results at the end,
like a red lizard that swallows hailstones.
3.29.6 வஸதோ தண்டகாரண்யே
தாபஸாந்தர்மசாரிண: ।
கிந்நு ஹத்வா மஹாபாகாந்
பலம் ப்ராப்ஸ்யஸி ராக்ஷஸ ॥
vasatō daṇḍakāraṇyē
tāpasāndharmacāriṇaḥ ।
kinnu hatvā mahābhāgān
phalaṃ prāpsyasi rākṣasa ॥
O Rākshasa! What is that that you gain
by killing the blessed, Dharma-adhering Tapasvis
who live in Daṇḍaka Araṇya?
3.29.7 ந சிரம் பாபகர்மாண:
க்ரூரா லோகஜுகுப்ஸிதா: ।
ஐஸ்வர்யம் ப்ராப்ய திஷ்டந்தி
ஸீர்ணமூலா இவ த்ருமா: ॥
na ciraṃ pāpakarmāṇaḥ
krūrā lōkajugupsitāḥ ।
aiṡvaryaṃ prāpya tiṣṭhanti
ṡīrṇamūlā iva drumāḥ ॥
The stature of those who are
cruel and commit sinful deeds
and are abhorred by the world
will not last long, like
a tree whose roots are rotten.
3.29.8 அவஸ்யம் லபதே ஜந்து:
பலம் பாபஸ்ய கர்மண: ।
கோரம் பர்யாகதே காலே
த்ருமா: புஷ்பமிவார்தவம் ॥
avaṡyaṃ labhatē jantuḥ
phalaṃ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ ।
ghōraṃ paryāgatē kālē
drumāḥ puṣpamivārtavam ॥
All beings are bound to pay dearly
for their sinful deeds when the time ripens,
as surely as trees bloom when the season arrives.
3.29.9 நசிராத்ப்ராப்யதே லோகே
பாபாநாம் கர்மணாம் பலம் ।
ஸவிஷாணாமிவாந்நாநாம்
புக்தாநாம் க்ஷணதாசர ॥
nacirātprāpyatē lōkē
pāpānāṃ karmaṇāṃ phalam ।
saviṣāṇāmivānnānāṃ
bhuktānāṃ kṣaṇadācara ॥
The consequences of sinful deeds, O Rākshasa,
shall be experienced soon enough in this world
like for those eating poisoned food!
3.29.10 பாபமாசரதாம் கோரம்
லோகஸ்யாப்ரியமிச்சதாம் ।
அஹமாஸாதிதோ ராஜா
ப்ராணாந்ஹந்தும் நிஸாசர ॥
pāpamācaratāṃ ghōraṃ
lōkasyāpriyamicchatām ।
ahamāsāditō rājā
prāṇānhantuṃ niṡācara ॥
I, being a king, was commissioned
to take the lives of the night-rovers
who are bent on harassing the world
and are guilty of sinful deeds!
3.29.11 அத்ய ஹி த்வாம் மயா முக்தா:
ஸரா: காஞ்சநபூஷணா: ।
விதார்யாதிபதிஷ்யந்தி
வல்மீகமிவ பந்நகா: ॥
adya hi tvāṃ mayā muktāḥ
ṡarāḥ kāńcanabhūṣaṇāḥ ।
vidāryātipatiṣyanti
valmīkamiva pannagāḥ ॥
The arrows, adorned with gold,
shot by me today shall
come out after rending you,
like serpents out of anthill.
3.29.12 யே த்வயா தண்டகாரண்யே
பக்ஷிதா தர்மசாரிண: ।
தாநத்ய நிஹதஸ்ஸங்க்யே
ஸஸைந்யோऽநுகமிஷ்யஸி ॥
yē tvayā daṇḍakāraṇyē
bhakṣitā dharmacāriṇaḥ ।
tānadya nihatassaṅkhyē
sasainyō'nugamiṣyasi ॥
Slain today in this fight,
you, along with your army,
shall meet the same fate as that of
the Dharma-adhering (Tapasvis)
whom you devoured in the Daṇḍaka Araṇya!
3.29.13 அத்ய த்வாம் நிஹதம் பாணை:
பஸ்யந்து பரமர்ஷய: ।
நிரயஸ்தம் விமாநஸ்தா
யே த்வயா ஹிம்ஸிதா: புரா ॥
adya tvāṃ nihataṃ bāṇaiḥ
paṡyantu paramarṣayaḥ ।
nirayasthaṃ vimānasthā
yē tvayā hiṃsitāḥ purā ॥
Today, the Maharshis
whom you had tormented earlier
shall see you in hell,
killed by the arrows,
from their Vimānas!
3.29.14 ப்ரஹர த்வம் யதாகாமம்
குரு யத்நம் குலாதம ।
அத்ய தே பாதயிஷ்யாமி
ஸிரஸ்தாலபலம் யதா ॥
prahara tvaṃ yathākāmaṃ
kuru yatnaṃ kulādhama ।
adya tē pātayiṣyāmi
ṡirastālaphalaṃ yathā ॥
Strike me, you may, as hard as you can,
O base-born, but I shall bring your head
tumbling down like the fruit of palm!
3.29.15 ஏவமுக்தஸ்து ராமேண
கரஸ்ஸம்ரக்தலோசந: ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச ததோ ராமம்
ப்ரஹஸந்க்ரோதமூர்சித: ॥
ēvamuktastu rāmēṇa
kharassaṃraktalōcanaḥ ।
pratyuvāca tatō rāmaṃ
prahasankrōdhamūrchitaḥ ॥
Thus taunted by Rāma,
Khara, with his eyes turned blood red,
responded laughing, losing his mind in rage:
3.29.16 ப்ராக்ருதாந்ராக்ஷஸாந்ஹத்வா
யுத்தே தஸரதாத்மஜ ।
ஆத்மநா கதமாத்மாநம்
அப்ரஸஸ்யம் ப்ரஸம்ஸஸி ॥
prākṛtānrākṣasānhatvā
yuddhē daṡarathātmaja ।
ātmanā kathamātmānam
apraṡasyaṃ praṡaṃsasi ॥
O son of Daṡaratha!
You praise yourself for
killing ordinary Rākshasas in fight,
which, in fact, is nothing worth speaking of!
3.29.17 விக்ராந்தா பலவந்தோ வா
யே பவந்தி நரர்ஷபா: ।
கதயந்தி ந தே கிஞ்சித்
தேஜஸா ஸ்வேந கர்விதா: ॥
vikrāntā balavantō vā
yē bhavanti nararṣabhāḥ ।
kathayanti na tē kińcit
tējasā svēna garvitāḥ ॥
The true bulls among men
who are strong and brave
do not boast even the least
and do not succumb to arrogance
because of their prowess.
3.29.18 ப்ராக்ருதாஸ்த்வக்ருதாத்மாநோ
லோகே க்ஷத்ரியபாம்ஸநா: ।
நிரர்தகம் விகத்தந்தே
யதா ராம விகத்தஸே ॥
prākṛtāstvakṛtātmānō
lōkē kṣatriyapāṃsanāḥ ।
nirarthakaṃ vikatthantē
yathā rāma vikatthasē ॥
O Rāma, you are boasting about yourself
like a lowly, immature and ordinary Kshatriya, in vain!
3.29.19 குலம் வ்யபதிஸந்வீர:
ஸமரே கோऽபிதாஸ்யதி ।
ம்ருத்யுகாலே ஹி ஸம்ப்ராப்தே
ஸ்வயமப்ரஸ்தவே ஸ்தவம் ॥
kulaṃ vyapadiṡanvīraḥ
samarē kō'bhidhāsyati ।
mṛtyukālē hi samprāptē
svayamaprastavē stavam ॥
Would a Veera ever indulge
in the mention of his lineage
and in self-praise at the
inopportune moment of
imminent death in battle?
3.29.20 ஸர்வதைவ லகுத்வம் தே
கத்தநேந விதர்ஸிதம் ।
ஸுவர்ணப்ரதிரூபேண
தப்தேநேவ குஸாக்நிநா ॥
sarvathaiva laghutvaṃ tē
katthanēna vidarṡitam ।
suvarṇapratirūpēṇa
taptēnēva kuṡāgninā ॥
Your boasts only expose
your lowliness in every which way.
It is like the flame of Kuṡa grass
fooling itself to be molten gold.
3.29.21 ந து மாமிஹ திஷ்டந்தம்
பஸ்யஸி த்வம் கதாதரம் ।
தராதரமிவாகம்ப்யம்
பர்வதம் தாதுபிஸ்சிதம் ॥
na tu māmiha tiṣṭhantaṃ
paṡyasi tvaṃ gadādharam ।
dharādharamivākampyaṃ
parvataṃ dhātubhiṡcitam ॥
Do you not see me standing here wielding the club,
firm like a mountain with its
layers of expanses of (heavy) minerals?
3.29.22 பர்யாப்தோऽஹம் கதாபாணி:
ஹந்தும் ப்ராணாந்ரணே தவ ।
த்ரயாணாமபி லோகாநாம்
பாஸஹஸ்த இவாந்தக: ॥
paryāptō'haṃ gadāpāṇiḥ
hantuṃ prāṇānraṇē tava ।
trayāṇāmapi lōkānāṃ
pāṡahasta ivāntakaḥ ॥
I, armed with the club in my hand, am
good enough to take your life in this fight,
like Yama, with noose in his hand is,
to take the lives of everyone in the three worlds.
3.29.23 காமம் பஹ்வபி வக்தவ்யம்
த்வயி வக்ஷ்யாமி ந த்வஹம் ।
அஸ்தம் கச்சேத்தி ஸவிதா
யுத்தவிக்நஸ்ததோ பவேத் ॥
kāmaṃ bahvapi vaktavyaṃ
tvayi vakṣyāmi na tvaham ।
astaṃ gacchēddhi savitā
yuddhavighnastatō bhavēt ॥
There is a lot to say about you.
But I shall not venture into it now
as the sun might set (by the time I finish).
Then the fight will be disrupted.
3.29.24 சதுர்தஸ ஸஹஸ்ராணி
ராக்ஷஸாநாம் ஹதாநி தே ।
த்வத்விநாஸாத்கரோம்யேஷாம்
தேஷாமஸ்ருப்ரமார்ஜநம் ॥
caturdaṡa sahasrāṇi
rākṣasānāṃ hatāni tē ।
tvadvināṡātkarōmyēṣāṃ
tēṣāmaṡrupramārjanam ॥
I shall destroy you and
wipe off the tears shed for the
fourteen thousand Rākshasas you killed.
3.29.25 இத்யுக்த்வா பரமக்ருத்த:
தாம் கதாம் பரமாங்கத: ।
கரஸ்சிக்ஷேப ராமாய
ப்ரதீப்தாமஸநிம் யதா ॥
ityuktvā paramakruddhaḥ
tāṃ gadāṃ paramāṅgadaḥ ।
kharaṡcikṣēpa rāmāya
pradīptāmaṡaniṃ yathā ॥
Having said this, the extremely enraged
Khara of imposing limbs hurled at Rāma
the club that dazzled like a thunderbolt.
3.29.26 கரபாஹுப்ரயுக்தா ஸா
ப்ரதீப்தா மஹதீ கதா ।
பஸ்மவ்ருக்ஷாம்ஸ்ச குல்மாம்ஸ்ச
க்ருத்வாகாத்தத்ஸமீபத: ॥
kharabāhuprayuktā sā
pradīptā mahatī gadā ।
bhasmavṛkṣāṃṡca gulmāṃṡca
kṛtvāgāttatsamīpataḥ ॥
That mighty flaming club
hurled by Khara left him,
reducing the trees and bushes
on its path into ashes.
3.29.27 தாமாபதந்தீம் ஜ்வலிதாம்
ம்ருத்யுபாஸோபமாம் கதாம் ।
அந்தரிக்ஷகதாம் ராம:
சிச்சேத பஹுதா ஸரை: ॥
tāmāpatantīṃ jvalitāṃ
mṛtyupāṡōpamāṃ gadām ।
antarikṣagatāṃ rāmaḥ
cicchēda bahudhā ṡaraiḥ ॥
Rāma, with many arrows,
shattered into pieces that flaming club,
which was fast approaching
like the noose of death,
while it was still in flight.
3.29.28 ஸா விகீர்ணா ஸரைர்பக்நா
பபாத தரணீதலே ।
கதா மந்த்ரௌஷதபலை:
வ்யாலீவ விநிபாதிதா ॥
sā vikīrṇā ṡarairbhagnā
papāta dharaṇītalē ।
gadā mantrauṣadhabalaiḥ
vyālīva vinipātitā ॥
Broken by the arrows and shattered into pieces
that club fell to the ground like a
female serpent downed by the
power of spells and herbs.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே ஏகோநத்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥

3.29.15 ஏவமுக்தஸ்து ராமேண
கரஸ்ஸம்ரக்தலோசந: ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச ததோ ராமம்
ப்ரஹஸந்க்ரோதமூர்சித: ॥
ēvamuktastu rāmēṇa
kharassaṃraktalōcanaḥ ।
pratyuvāca tatō rāmaṃ
prahasankrōdhamūrchitaḥ ॥
Thus taunted by Rāma,
Khara, with his eyes turned blood red,
responded laughing, losing his mind in rage:
3.29.16 ப்ராக்ருதாந்ராக்ஷஸாந்ஹத்வா
யுத்தே தஸரதாத்மஜ ।
ஆத்மநா கதமாத்மாநம்
அப்ரஸஸ்யம் ப்ரஸம்ஸஸி ॥
prākṛtānrākṣasānhatvā
yuddhē daṡarathātmaja ।
ātmanā kathamātmānam
apraṡasyaṃ praṡaṃsasi ॥
O son of Daṡaratha!
You praise yourself for
killing ordinary Rākshasas in fight,
which, in fact, is nothing worth speaking of!
3.29.17 விக்ராந்தா பலவந்தோ வா
யே பவந்தி நரர்ஷபா: ।
கதயந்தி ந தே கிஞ்சித்
தேஜஸா ஸ்வேந கர்விதா: ॥
vikrāntā balavantō vā
yē bhavanti nararṣabhāḥ ।
kathayanti na tē kińcit
tējasā svēna garvitāḥ ॥
The true bulls among men
who are strong and brave
do not boast even the least
and do not succumb to arrogance
because of their prowess.
3.29.18 ப்ராக்ருதாஸ்த்வக்ருதாத்மாநோ
லோகே க்ஷத்ரியபாம்ஸநா: ।
நிரர்தகம் விகத்தந்தே
யதா ராம விகத்தஸே ॥
prākṛtāstvakṛtātmānō
lōkē kṣatriyapāṃsanāḥ ।
nirarthakaṃ vikatthantē
yathā rāma vikatthasē ॥
O Rāma, you are boasting about yourself
like a lowly, immature and ordinary Kshatriya, in vain!
3.29.19 குலம் வ்யபதிஸந்வீர:
ஸமரே கோऽபிதாஸ்யதி ।
ம்ருத்யுகாலே ஹி ஸம்ப்ராப்தே
ஸ்வயமப்ரஸ்தவே ஸ்தவம் ॥
kulaṃ vyapadiṡanvīraḥ
samarē kō'bhidhāsyati ।
mṛtyukālē hi samprāptē
svayamaprastavē stavam ॥
Would a Veera ever indulge
in the mention of his lineage
and in self-praise at the
inopportune moment of
imminent death in battle?
3.29.20 ஸர்வதைவ லகுத்வம் தே
கத்தநேந விதர்ஸிதம் ।
ஸுவர்ணப்ரதிரூபேண
தப்தேநேவ குஸாக்நிநா ॥
sarvathaiva laghutvaṃ tē
katthanēna vidarṡitam ।
suvarṇapratirūpēṇa
taptēnēva kuṡāgninā ॥
Your boasts only expose
your lowliness in every which way.
It is like the flame of Kuṡa grass
fooling itself to be molten gold.
3.29.21 ந து மாமிஹ திஷ்டந்தம்
பஸ்யஸி த்வம் கதாதரம் ।
தராதரமிவாகம்ப்யம்
பர்வதம் தாதுபிஸ்சிதம் ॥
na tu māmiha tiṣṭhantaṃ
paṡyasi tvaṃ gadādharam ।
dharādharamivākampyaṃ
parvataṃ dhātubhiṡcitam ॥
Do you not see me standing here wielding the club,
firm like a mountain with its
layers of expanses of (heavy) minerals?
3.29.22 பர்யாப்தோऽஹம் கதாபாணி:
ஹந்தும் ப்ராணாந்ரணே தவ ।
த்ரயாணாமபி லோகாநாம்
பாஸஹஸ்த இவாந்தக: ॥
paryāptō'haṃ gadāpāṇiḥ
hantuṃ prāṇānraṇē tava ।
trayāṇāmapi lōkānāṃ
pāṡahasta ivāntakaḥ ॥
I, armed with the club in my hand, am
good enough to take your life in this fight,
like Yama, with noose in his hand is,
to take the lives of everyone in the three worlds.
3.29.23 காமம் பஹ்வபி வக்தவ்யம்
த்வயி வக்ஷ்யாமி ந த்வஹம் ।
அஸ்தம் கச்சேத்தி ஸவிதா
யுத்தவிக்நஸ்ததோ பவேத் ॥
kāmaṃ bahvapi vaktavyaṃ
tvayi vakṣyāmi na tvaham ।
astaṃ gacchēddhi savitā
yuddhavighnastatō bhavēt ॥
There is a lot to say about you.
But I shall not venture into it now
as the sun might set (by the time I finish).
Then the fight will be disrupted.
3.29.24 சதுர்தஸ ஸஹஸ்ராணி
ராக்ஷஸாநாம் ஹதாநி தே ।
த்வத்விநாஸாத்கரோம்யேஷாம்
தேஷாமஸ்ருப்ரமார்ஜநம் ॥
caturdaṡa sahasrāṇi
rākṣasānāṃ hatāni tē ।
tvadvināṡātkarōmyēṣāṃ
tēṣāmaṡrupramārjanam ॥
I shall destroy you and
wipe off the tears shed for the
fourteen thousand Rākshasas you killed.
3.29.25 இத்யுக்த்வா பரமக்ருத்த:
தாம் கதாம் பரமாங்கத: ।
கரஸ்சிக்ஷேப ராமாய
ப்ரதீப்தாமஸநிம் யதா ॥
ityuktvā paramakruddhaḥ
tāṃ gadāṃ paramāṅgadaḥ ।
kharaṡcikṣēpa rāmāya
pradīptāmaṡaniṃ yathā ॥
Having said this, the extremely enraged
Khara of imposing limbs hurled at Rāma
the club that dazzled like a thunderbolt.
3.29.26 கரபாஹுப்ரயுக்தா ஸா
ப்ரதீப்தா மஹதீ கதா ।
பஸ்மவ்ருக்ஷாம்ஸ்ச குல்மாம்ஸ்ச
க்ருத்வாகாத்தத்ஸமீபத: ॥
kharabāhuprayuktā sā
pradīptā mahatī gadā ।
bhasmavṛkṣāṃṡca gulmāṃṡca
kṛtvāgāttatsamīpataḥ ॥
That mighty flaming club
hurled by Khara left him,
reducing the trees and bushes
on its path into ashes.
3.29.27 தாமாபதந்தீம் ஜ்வலிதாம்
ம்ருத்யுபாஸோபமாம் கதாம் ।
அந்தரிக்ஷகதாம் ராம:
சிச்சேத பஹுதா ஸரை: ॥
tāmāpatantīṃ jvalitāṃ
mṛtyupāṡōpamāṃ gadām ।
antarikṣagatāṃ rāmaḥ
cicchēda bahudhā ṡaraiḥ ॥
Rāma, with many arrows,
shattered into pieces that flaming club,
which was fast approaching
like the noose of death,
while it was still in flight.
3.29.28 ஸா விகீர்ணா ஸரைர்பக்நா
பபாத தரணீதலே ।
கதா மந்த்ரௌஷதபலை:
வ்யாலீவ விநிபாதிதா ॥
sā vikīrṇā ṡarairbhagnā
papāta dharaṇītalē ।
gadā mantrauṣadhabalaiḥ
vyālīva vinipātitā ॥
Broken by the arrows and shattered into pieces
that club fell to the ground like a
female serpent downed by the
power of spells and herbs.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே ஏகோநத்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē ēkōnatriṃṡassargaḥ ॥
