Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 32
In this Sarga, Ṡūrpaṇakhā goes to Lanka, where her brother and the king of Rākshasas, Rāvaṇa lives. Rāvaṇa's lofty, imposing, magnificent, but domineering, cruel and terrorizing personality, including his complete disregard for Dharma, is described here.
3.32.1-2 ததஸ்ஸூர்பணகா த்ருஷ்ட்வா
ஸஹஸ்ராணி சதுர்தஸ ।
ஹதாந்யேகேந ராமேண
ரக்ஷஸாம் பீமகர்மணாம் ॥
தூஷணம் ச கரம் சைவ
ஹதம் த்ரிஸிரஸா ஸஹ ।
த்ருஷ்ட்வா புநர்மஹாநாதம்
நநாத ஜலதோ யதா ॥
tataṡṡūrpaṇakhā dṛṣṭvā
sahasrāṇi caturdaṡa ।
hatānyēkēna rāmēṇa
rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām ॥
dūṣaṇaṃ ca kharaṃ caiva
hataṃ triṡirasā saha ।
dṛṣṭvā punarmahānādaṃ
nanāda jaladō yathā ॥
Ṡūrpaṇakhā, having seen fourteen thousand
Rākshasas capable of ghastly deeds,
including Khara, Dūshaṇa and Triṡira,
killed singlehandedly by Rāma,
let off a mighty yell again
sounding like a a thunderous cloud.
3.32.3 ஸா த்ருஷ்ட்வா கர்ம ராமஸ்ய
க்ருதமந்யைஸ்ஸுதுஷ்கரம் ।
ஜகாம பரமோத்விக்நா
லங்காம் ராவணபாலிதாம் ॥
sā dṛṣṭvā karma rāmasya
kṛtamanyaissuduṣkaram ।
jagāma paramōdvignā
laṅkāṃ rāvaṇapālitām ॥
She was gripped by fear seeing
what Rāma did, which would be simply
impossible for anyone else to do,
and hastened to Laṅkā that was ruled by Rāvaṇa.
3.32.4 ஸா ததர்ஸ விமாநாக்ரே
ராவணம் தீப்ததேஜஸம் ।
உபோபவிஷ்டம் ஸசிவை:
மருத்பிரிவ வாஸவம் ॥
sā dadarṡa vimānāgrē
rāvaṇaṃ dīptatējasam ।
upōpaviṣṭaṃ sacivaiḥ
marudbhiriva vāsavam ॥
She saw Rāvaṇa of fiery radiance
seated along with his ministers,
in the top floor of the palace,
like Vāsava attended by the Maruts.
Vāsava is another name for Indra.
Maruts are Dēvas.
3.32.5 ஆஸீநம் ஸூர்யஸங்காஸே
காஞ்சநே பரமாஸநே ।
ருக்மவேதிகதம் ப்ராஜ்யம்
ஜ்வலந்தமிவ பாவகம் ॥
āsīnaṃ sūryasaṅkāṡē
kāñcanē paramāsanē ।
rukmavēdigataṃ prājyaṃ
jvalantamiva pāvakam ॥
He was seated on his high throne of
gold that shone like the sun.
He was like the blazing fire
emerging from a golden Vēdi,
boosted by ample ghee.
3.32.6 தேவகந்தர்வபூதாநாம்
ருஷீணாம் ச மஹாத்மநாம் ।
அஜேயம் ஸமரே ஸூரம்
வ்யாத்தாநநமிவாந்தகம் ॥
dēvagandharvabhūtānām
ṛṣīṇāṃ ca mahātmanām ।
ajēyaṃ samarē ṡūraṃ
vyāttānanamivāntakam ॥
The valiant one, invincible in any fight,
was like Death with wide opened jaws
(ready to gobble) Dēvas, Gandharvas, and
all beings, including Ṛshis who were Mahātmas.
3.32.7 தேவாஸுரவிமர்தேஷு
வஜ்ராஸநிக்ருதவ்ரணம் ।
ஐராவதவிஷாணக்ரை:
உத்க்ருஷ்டகிணவக்ஷஸம் ॥
dēvāsuravimardēṣu
vajrāṡanikṛtavraṇam ।
airāvataviṣāṇagraiḥ
utkṛṣṭakiṇavakṣasam ॥
He had scars wrought by the thunderbolt
in the battle between Dēvas and Asuras,
and scratches on the chest scraped by
Airāvata with the sharp edges of its tusks.
3.32.8 விம்ஸத்புஜம் தஸக்ரீவம்
தர்ஸநீயபரிச்சதம் ।
விஸாலவக்ஷஸம் வீரம்
ராஜலக்ஷண ஸோபிதம் ॥
viṃṡadbhujaṃ daṡagrīvaṃ
darṡanīyaparicchadam ।
viṡālavakṣasaṃ vīraṃ
rājalakṣaṇa ṡōbhitam ॥
That valiant one, with twenty arms, ten heads,
and imposingly wide chest,
bearing all the marks of royalty,
was surrounded paraphernalia that were any eyeful.
3.32.9 ஸ்நிக்தவைடூர்யஸங்காஸம்
தப்தகாஞ்சநகுண்டலம் ।
ஸுபுஜம் ஸுக்லதஸநம்
மஹாஸ்யம் பர்வதோபமம் ॥
snigdhavaiḍūryasaṅkāṡaṃ
taptakāñcanakuṇḍalam ।
subhujaṃ ṡukladaṡanaṃ
mahāsyaṃ parvatōpamam ॥
He had a complexion that resembled the
translucent sheen of lazulite,
ear-pendants of gold purified in fire,
splendid shoulders, clean-white teeth, wide mouth
and was imposing like a mountain.
3.32.10 விஷ்ணுசக்ரநிபாதைஸ்ச
ஸதஸோ தேவஸம்யுகே ।
அந்யைஸ்ஸஸ்த்ரப்ரஹாரைஸ்ச
மஹாயுத்தேஷு தாடிதம் ॥
viṣṇucakranipātaiṡca
ṡataṡō dēvasaṃyugē ।
anyaiṡṡastraprahāraiṡca
mahāyuddhēṣu tāḍitam ॥
He was struck hundreds of times
by the Cakra of Vishṇu in the war with Dēvas
and hit by other weapons in other great battles.
3.32.11 அஹதாங்கம் ஸமஸ்தைஸ்ச
தேவப்ரஹரணைஸ்ததா ।
அக்ஷோப்யாணாம் ஸமுத்ராணாம்
க்ஷோபணம் க்ஷிப்ரகாரிணம் ॥
ahatāṅgaṃ samastaiṡca
dēvapraharaṇaistathā ।
akṣōbhyāṇāṃ samudrāṇāṃ
kṣōbhaṇaṃ kṣiprakāriṇam ॥
Every limb of his was hit by
the strikes of the Dēvas.
He was capable of throwing even the
imperturbable seas into a violent turmoil.
3.32.12 க்ஷேப்தாரம் பர்வதேந்த்ராணாம்
ஸுராணாம் ச ப்ரமர்தநம் ।
உச்சேத்தாரம் ச தர்மாணாம்
பரதாராபிமர்ஸநம் ॥
kṣēptāraṃ parvatēndrāṇāṃ
surāṇāṃ ca pramardanam ।
ucchēttāraṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ
paradārābhimarṡanam ॥
He could playfully toss away
giant mountains and thrash Dēvas.
With utter disregard to Dharma,
he laid hands on other men’s wives.
3.32.13-14a ஸர்வதிவ்யாஸ்த்ரயோக்தாரம்
யஜ்ஞவிக்நகரம் ஸதா ।
புரீம் போகவதீம் ப்ராப்ய
பராஜித்ய ச வாஸுகிம் ।
தக்ஷகஸ்ய ப்ரியாம் பார்யாம்
பராஜித்ய ஜஹார ய: ॥
sarvadivyāstrayōktāraṃ
yajñavighnakaraṃ sadā ।
purīṃ bhōgavatīṃ prāpya
parājitya ca vāsukim ।
takṣakasya priyāṃ bhāryāṃ
parājitya jahāra yaḥ ॥
He had every celestial Astra at his disposal.
He habitually ruins Yajñas.
He captured the city of Bhōgavati
by defeating Vāsuki and he
abducted the dear wife of Takshaka.
3.32.14b-15a கைலாஸபர்வதம் கத்வா
விஜித்ய நரவாஹநம் ।
விமாநம் புஷ்பகம் தஸ்ய
காமகம் வை ஜஹார ய: ॥
kailāsaparvataṃ gatvā
vijitya naravāhanam ।
vimānaṃ puṣpakaṃ tasya
kāmagaṃ vai jahāra yaḥ ॥
He went to Mount Kailāsa and
defeating the Dēva who rode on a man (Kubēra),
wrested the Vimāna named Pushpaka
that could travel at one's will.
3.32.15b-16a வநம் சைத்ரரதம் திவ்யம்
நலிநீம் நந்தநம் வநம் ।
விநாஸயதி ய: க்ரோதாத்
தேவோத்யாநாநி வீர்யவாந் ॥
vanaṃ caitrarathaṃ divyaṃ
nalinīṃ nandanaṃ vanam ।
vināṡayati yaḥ krōdhāt
dēvōdyānāni vīryavān ॥
That valiant one, in his anger, destroyed
Caitraratha, Nandana, lotus pond
and many celestial gardens.
3.32.16b-17a சந்த்ரஸூர்யௌ மஹாபாகௌ
உத்திஷ்டந்தௌ பரந்தபௌ ।
நிவாரயதி பாஹுப்யாம்
யஸ்ஸைலஸிகரோபம: ॥
candrasūryau mahābhāgau
uttiṣṭhantau parantapau ।
nivārayati bāhubhyāṃ
yaṡṡailaṡikharōpamaḥ ॥
He, the scorcher of foe,
lofty as a mountain crest,
could obstruct with his hands (the movements of)
the blessed sun and moon as they rose.
3.32.17b-18a தஸவர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி
தபஸ்தப்வா மஹாவநே ।
புரா ஸ்வயம்புவே தீர:
ஸிராம்ஸ்யுபஜஹார ய: ॥
daṡavarṣasahasrāṇi
tapastapvā mahāvanē ।
purā svayaṃbhuvē dhīraḥ
ṡirāṃsyupajahāra yaḥ ॥
He did Tapa for ten thousand years in the great Vana,
and offered his own heads to the self-born Brahma.
3.32.18b-19a தேவதாநவகந்தர்வ
பிஸாசபதகோரகை: ।
அபயம் யஸ்ய ஸங்க்ராமே
ம்ருத்யுதோ மாநுஷாத்ருதே ॥
dēvadānavagandharva
piṡācapatagōragaiḥ ।
abhayaṃ yasya saṅgrāmē
mṛtyutō mānuṣādṛtē ॥
He was, in any fight, immune to death
from all beings, Dēvas, Dānavas, Gandharvas,
Piṡācas, Patagas Uragas, except humans.
3.32.19b-20a மந்த்ரைரபிஷ்டுதம் புண்யம்
அத்வரேஷு த்விஜாதிபி: ।
ஹவிர்தாநேஷு யஸ்ஸோமம்
உபஹந்தி மஹாபல: ॥
mantrairabhiṣṭutaṃ puṇyam
adhvarēṣu dvijātibhiḥ ।
havirdhānēṣu yassōmam
upahanti mahābalaḥ ॥
With his immense strength, he
would destroy the pious and Mantra-infused Sōma
extracted and kept safe by
the Brāhmaṇas in the vessels of Havi
at the time of Yajñas.
3.32.20b-21a ஆப்தயஜ்ஞஹரம் க்ரூரம்
ப்ரஹ்மக்நம் துஷ்டசாரிணம் ।
கர்கஸம் நிரநுக்ரோஸம்
ப்ரஜாநாமஹிதே ரதம் ॥
āptayajñaharaṃ krūraṃ
brahmaghnaṃ duṣṭacāriṇam ।
karkaṡaṃ niranukrōṡaṃ
prajānāmahitē ratam ॥
He was cruel, harsh and compassionless.
He destroyed Yajñas that were almost complete,
killed Brāhmaṇas, committed terrible deeds,
and indulged in harming people, all the time.
3.32.21b-22a ராவணம் ஸர்வபூதாநாம்
ஸர்வலோகபயாவஹம் ।
ராக்ஷஸீ ப்ராதரம் ஸூரம்
ஸா ததர்ஸ மஹாபலம் ॥
rāvaṇaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ
sarvalōkabhayāvaham ।
rākṣasī bhrātaraṃ ṡūraṃ
sā dadarṡa mahābalam ॥
She, the Rākshasi, saw that
mighty strong brother of hers,
who made all beings cry and
terrorized the entire world.
3.32.22b-23a தம் திவ்யவஸ்த்ராபரணம்
திவ்யமால்யோபஸோபிதம் ।
ஆஸநே ஸூபவிஷ்டம் ச
காலகாலமிவோத்யதம் ॥
taṃ divyavastrābharaṇaṃ
divyamālyōpaṡōbhitam ।
āsanē sūpaviṣṭaṃ ca
kālakālamivōdyatam ॥
He wore splendid ornaments and clothing,
shone with splendid garlands,
seated fittingly on his chair,
and looked liked Death to Death itself.
3.32.23b-24 ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரம் மஹாபாகம்
பௌலஸ்த்யகுலநந்தநம் ।
ராவணம் ஸத்ருஹந்தாரம்
மந்த்ரிபி: பரிவாரிதம் ।
அபிகம்யாப்ரவீத்வாக்யம்
ராக்ஷஸீ பயவிஹ்வலா ॥
rākṣasēndraṃ mahābhāgaṃ
paulastyakulanandanam ।
rāvaṇaṃ ṡatruhantāraṃ
mantribhiḥ parivāritam ।
abhigamyābravīdvākyaṃ
rākṣasī bhayavihvalā ॥
The Rākshasi, who was terrified,
reached that opulent lord of Rākshasas,
delight of the Paulastya lineage,
destroyer of enemies
and spoke to him in the presence
of ministers who were around him.
3.32.25 தமப்ரவீத்தீப்தவிஸாலலோசநம்
ப்ரதர்ஸயித்வா பயமோஹமூர்சிதா ।
ஸுதாருணம் வாக்யமபீதசாரிணீ
மஹாத்மநா ஸூர்பணகா விரூபிதா ॥
tamabravīddhīptaviṡālalōcanaṃ
pradarṡayitvā bhayamōhamūrchitā ।
sudāruṇaṃ vākyamabhītacāriṇī
mahātmanā ṡūrpaṇakhā virūpitā ॥
Ṡūrpaṇakhā, who normally moved without fear,
was now lost with fear and bewilderment,
disfigured by the great man.
She showed her (pathetic) condition
to the one with wide and fiery eyes
and spoke these ruthless words:
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே த்வாத்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē dvātriṃṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the thirty second Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
