Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 37
In this Sarga Māreeca makes it clear to Rāvaṇa that he is completely misinformed of Rāma’s strength as well as character. He tells Rāvaṇa that Rāma was not exiled by his father and he himself abjured the kingdom and luxuries to make his father a man of his word.
Māreeca warns that getting on the wrong side of Rāma is nothing short of courting death. He advices Rāvaṇa to take counsel from his ministers and take a decision after weighing all the pros and cons, and taking an honest count of his own strengths and weaknesses and that of Rāma.
3.37.1 தச்ச்ருத்வா ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய
வாக்யம் வாக்யவிஸாரத: ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞோ
மாரீசோ ராக்ஷஸேஸ்வரம் ॥
tacchṛtvā rākṣasēndrasya
vākyaṃ vākyaviṡāradaḥ ।
pratyuvāca mahāprājńō
mārīcō rākṣasēṡvaram ॥
Hearing those words of the lord of Rākshasas,
the mighty strong Māreeca,
who was good with his choice of words
responded to that ruler of Rākshasas saying:
3.37.2 ஸுலபா: புருஷா ராஜந்
ஸததம் ப்ரியவாதிந: ।
அப்ரியஸ்ய து பத்யஸ்ய
வக்தா ஸ்ரோதா ச துர்லப: ॥
sulabhāḥ puruṣā rājan
satataṃ priyavādinaḥ ।
apriyasya tu pathyasya
vaktā ṡrōtā ca durlabhaḥ ॥
It is always easy to find,
O king, people who talk sweet!
But when it comes to bitter truths
that are not so pleasing to the ears,
it is hard to find
anyone who would venture to tell
and anyone who would be willing to listen.
3.37.3 ந நூநம் புத்யஸே ராமம்
மஹாவீர்யம் குணோந்நதம் ।
அயுக்தசாரஸ்சபலோ
மஹேந்த்ரவருணோபமம் ॥
na nūnaṃ budhyasē rāmaṃ
mahāvīryaṃ guṇōnnatam ।
ayuktacāraṡcapalō
mahēndravaruṇōpamam ॥
Certainly, you do not seem to know Rāma.
You are imagining things, lacking good intelligence.
He is of extraordinary valor and lofty character
and is comparable to the great Indra and Varuṇa.
3.37.4 அபி ஸ்வஸ்தி பவேத்தாத
ஸர்வேஷாம் புவி ரக்ஷஸாம் ।
அபி ராமோ ஸுஸங்க்ருத்த:
குர்யால்லோகமராக்ஷஸம் ॥
api svasti bhavēttāta
sarvēṣāṃ bhuvi rakṣasām ।
api rāmō susaṅkruddhaḥ
kuryāllōkamarākṣasam ॥
My dear, I hope everything bodes well
for all the Rākshasas of the earth!
I hope Rāma does not get enraged to the extent
of eradicating all Rākshasas of the world!
3.37.5 அபி தே ஜீவிதாந்தாய
நோத்பந்நா ஜநகாத்மஜா ।
அபி ஸீதாநிமித்தம் ச
ந பவேத்வ்யஸநம் மம ॥
api tē jīvitāntāya
nōtpannā janakātmajā ।
api sītānimittaṃ ca
na bhavēdvyasanaṃ mama ॥
I hope the daughter of Janaka
is not born to bring an end to your life.
And I hope I will not have to
fall into trouble because of Seetā.
3.37.6 அபி த்வாமீஸ்வரம் ப்ராப்ய
காமவ்ருத்தம் நிரங்குஸம் ।
ந விநஸ்யேத்புரீ லங்கா
த்வயா ஸஹ ஸராக்ஷஸா ॥
api tvāmīṡvaraṃ prāpya
kāmavṛttaṃ niraṅkuṡam ।
na vinaṡyētpurī laṅkā
tvayā saha sarākṣasā ॥
I hope, having got you, a wayward
who knows no restraint, as its king,
the city of Laṅkā with all the Rākshasas,
does not perish along with you!
3.37.7 த்வத்வித: காமவ்ருத்தோ ஹி
துஸ்ஸீல: பாபமந்த்ரித: ।
ஆத்மாநம் ஸ்வஜநம் ராஷ்ட்ரம்
ஸ ராஜா ஹந்தி துர்மதி: ॥
tvadvidhaḥ kāmavṛttō hi
duṡṡīlaḥ pāpamantritaḥ ।
ātmānaṃ svajanaṃ rāṣṭraṃ
sa rājā hanti durmatiḥ ॥
A king like you, a philanderer, a wicked one,
a man of bad character and evil thoughts,
certainly destroys himself, his people and his realm.
3.37.9 ந ச பித்ரா பரித்யக்தோ
நாமர்யாத: கதஞ்சந ।
ந லுப்தோ ந ச துஸ்ஸீலோ
ந ச க்ஷத்ரியபாம்ஸந: ॥
ந ச தர்மகுணைர்ஹீந:
கௌஸல்யாநந்தவர்தந: ।
ந தீக்ஷ்ணோ ந ச பூதாநாம்
ஸர்வேஷாமஹிதே ரத: ॥
na ca pitrā parityaktō
nāmaryādaḥ kathańcana ।
na lubdhō na ca duṡṡīlō
na ca kṣatriyapāṃsanaḥ ॥
na ca dharmaguṇairhīnaḥ
kausalyānandavardhanaḥ ।
na tīkṣṇō na ca bhūtānāṃ
sarvēṣāmahitē rataḥ ॥
Neither has he been abandoned by his father,
nor does he lack restraint.
Neither is he greedy,
nor is he of bad character.
Neither is he a wretched Kshatriya,
nor does he lack Dharma or virtues.
The delight of Kousalyā is
neither abrasive nor takes any
delight in harming all beings.
3.37.10 வஞ்சிதம் பிதரம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
கைகேய்யா ஸத்யவாதிநம் ।
கரிஷ்யாமீதி தர்மாத்மா
தாத ப்ரவ்ரஜிதோ வநம் ॥
vańcitaṃ pitaraṃ dṛṣṭvā
kaikēyyā satyavādinam ।
kariṣyāmīti dharmātmā
tāta pravrajitō vanam ॥
My dear! Seeing his
truth-abiding father duped by Kaikēyee,
the Dharmātma said he would
make the word come true, and left for the Vana. Most succinctly put!
3.37.11 கைகேய்யா: ப்ரியகாமார்தம்
பிதுர்தஸரதஸ்ய ச ।
ஹித்வா ராஜ்யம் ச போகாம்ஸ்ச
ப்ரவிஷ்டோ தண்டகாவநம் ॥
kaikēyyāḥ priyakāmārthaṃ
piturdaṡarathasya ca ।
hitvā rājyaṃ ca bhōgāṃṡca
praviṣṭō daṇḍakāvanam ॥
To fulfill the dear wish of Kaikēyee
and that of his father Daṡaratha,
he abjured the kingdom and the luxuries
and came to the Vana of Daṇḍaka.
3.37.12 ந ராம: கர்கஸஸ்தாத
நாவித்வாந்நாஜிதேந்த்ரிய: ।
அந்ருதம் துஸ்ஸ்ருதம் சைவ
நைவ த்வம் வக்துமர்ஹஸி ॥
na rāmaḥ karkaṡastāta
nāvidvānnājitēndriyaḥ ।
anṛtaṃ duṡṡrutaṃ caiva
naiva tvaṃ vaktumarhasi ॥
Neither is Rāma a savage, nor is he unlettered,
nor is he not a master of his senses.
You should not utter lies and spread slander.
3.37.13 ராமோ விக்ரஹவாந் தர்ம:
ஸாதுஸ்ஸத்யபராக்ரம: ।
ராஜா ஸர்வஸ்ய லோகஸ்ய
தேவாநாம் மகவாநிவ ॥
rāmō vigrahavān dharmaḥ
sādhussatyaparākramaḥ ।
rājā sarvasya lōkasya
dēvānāṃ maghavāniva ॥
Rāma is an embodiment of Dharma.
He is a good man and a man of true valor.
He is the king of all worlds
like Indra is of all the Dēvas.
3.37.14 கதம் த்வம் தஸ்ய வைதேஹீம்
ரக்ஷிதாம் ஸ்வேந தேஜஸா ।
இச்சஸி ப்ரஸபம் ஹர்தும்
ப்ரபாமிவ விவஸ்வத: ॥
kathaṃ tvaṃ tasya vaidēhīṃ
rakṣitāṃ svēna tējasā ।
icchasi prasabhaṃ hartuṃ
prabhāmiva vivasvataḥ ॥
How can you think of snatching Vaidēhi
while she is being protected by his power?
It is like snatching sunlight away from sun!
3.37.15 ஸரார்சிஷமநாத்ருஷ்யம்
சாபகங்கேந்தநம் ரணே ।
ராமாக்நிம் ஸஹஸா தீப்தம்
ந ப்ரவேஷ்டும் த்வமர்ஹஸி ॥
ṡarārciṣamanādhṛṣyaṃ
cāpakhaṅgēndhanaṃ raṇē ।
rāmāgniṃ sahasā dīptaṃ
na pravēṣṭuṃ tvamarhasi ॥
You should not hurry to throw yourself
into the invincible blazing fire that is Rama,
which has arrows for tongues of flame
and bow and sword for fuel!
3.37.16-17 தநுர்வ்யாதிததீப்தாஸ்யம்
ஸரார்சிஷமமர்ஷணம் ।
சாபபாணதரம் தீக்ஷ்ணம்
ஸத்ருஸைந்யப்ரஹாரிணம் ॥
ராஜ்யம் ஸுகம் ச ஸந்த்யஜ்ய
ஜீவிதம் சேஷ்டமாத்மந: ।
நாத்யாஸாதயிதும் தாத
ராமாந்தகமிஹார்ஹஸி ॥
dhanurvyāditadīptāsyaṃ
ṡarārciṣamamarṣaṇam ।
cāpabāṇadharaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ
ṡatrusainyaprahāriṇam ॥
rājyaṃ sukhaṃ ca santyajya
jīvitaṃ cēṣṭamātmanaḥ ।
nātyāsādayituṃ tāta
rāmāntakamihārhasi ॥
Throwing away your kingdom, comforts, life
and all else that you hold dear,
you should not rush headlong
towards death in the guise of Rāma,
who has a bow that is like a wide open flaming mouth
throwing out arrows like sparks,
and who decimates enemy forces
in his rage and wrath,
wielding that bow and arrows.
3.37.18 அப்ரமேயம் ஹி தத்தேஜோ
யஸ்ய ஸா ஜநகாத்மஜா ।
ந த்வம் ஸமர்தஸ்தாம் ஹர்தும்
ராமசாபாஸ்ரயம் வநே ॥
apramēyaṃ hi tattējō
yasya sā janakātmajā ।
na tvaṃ samarthastāṃ hartuṃ
rāmacāpāṡrayaṃ vanē ॥
Measureless is the strength of him
who has that daughter of Janaka for his own.
You are not capable of carrying her off
who is in the Vana under the protection of Rāma’s bow.
3.37.19 தஸ்ய ஸா நரஸிம்ஹஸ்ய
ஸிம்ஹோரஸ்கஸ்ய பாமிநீ ।
ப்ராணேப்யோऽபி ப்ரியதரா
பார்யா நித்யமநுவ்ரதா ॥
tasya sā narasiṃhasya
siṃhōraskasya bhāminī ।
prāṇēbhyō'pi priyatarā
bhāryā nityamanuvratā ॥
That lady is an ever devoted wife of
that lion among men, who has a leonine chest.
She is dearer to him than his own life.
3.37.20 ந ஸா தர்ஷயிதும் ஸக்யா
மைதில்யோஜஸ்விந: ப்ரியா ।
தீப்தஸ்யேவ ஹுதாஸஸ்ய
ஸிகா ஸீதா ஸுமத்யமா ॥
na sā dharṣayituṃ ṡakyā
maithilyōjasvinaḥ priyā ।
dīptasyēva hutāṡasya
ṡikhā sītā sumadhyamā ॥
That princess of Mithilā, of slender waist,
the darling of the supremely radiant (Rāma),
can not be held any more than the
flames of a blazing fire can be.
3.37.21 கிமுத்யமமிமம் வ்யர்தம்
க்ருத்வா தே ராக்ஷஸாதிப ।
த்ருஷ்டஸ்சேத்வம் ரணே தேந
ததந்தம் தவ ஜீவிதம் ॥
kimudyamamimaṃ vyarthaṃ
kṛtvā tē rākṣasādhipa ।
dṛṣṭaṡcētvaṃ raṇē tēna
tadantaṃ tava jīvitam ॥
What is the point of this
futile effort, O king of Rākshasas!
It would be the end of your life
when he sets his eyes upon you in battle.
3.37.22 ஜீவிதம் ச ஸுகம் சைவ
ராஜ்யம் சைவ ஸுதுர்லபம் ।
யதீச்சஸி சிரம் போக்தும்
மா க்ருதா ராமவிப்ரியம் ॥
jīvitaṃ ca sukhaṃ caiva
rājyaṃ caiva sudurlabham ।
yadīcchasi ciraṃ bhōktuṃ
mā kṛthā rāmavipriyam ॥
If you like to enjoy for a while
this life, comforts and kingdom,
which are not easy to obtain,
do not get on the wrong side of Rāma.
3.37.23-24 ஸ ஸர்வைஸ்ஸசிவைஸ்ஸார்தம்
விபீஷணபுரோகமை: ।
மந்த்ரயித்வா து தர்மிஷ்டை:
க்ருத்வா நிஸ்சயமாத்மந: ।
தோஷாணாம் ச குணாநாம் ச
ஸம்ப்ரதார்ய பலாபலம் ।
ஆத்மநஸ்ச பலம் ஜ்ஞாத்வா
ராகவஸ்ய ச தத்வத: ।
ஹிதாஹிதம் விநிஸ்சித்ய
க்ஷமம் த்வம் கர்துமர்ஹஸி ॥
sa sarvaissacivaissārdham
vibhīṣaṇapurōgamaiḥ ।
mantrayitvā tu dharmiṣṭhaiḥ
kṛtvā niṡcayamātmanaḥ ।
dōṣāṇāṃ ca guṇānāṃ ca
sampradhārya balābalam ।
ātmanaṡca balaṃ jńātvā
rāghavasya ca tatvataḥ ।
hitāhitaṃ viniṡcitya
kṣamaṃ tvaṃ kartumarhasi ॥
Hence you should take a firm decision
after getting counsel from Vibheeshaṇa and
other ministers who are Dharmātmas
and weighing the pros and cons.
You should take an honest count
of your strengths and weaknesses and those of Rāghava.
You should figure out which is good and which is not,
and act accordingly.
3.37.25 அஹம் து மந்யே தவ ந க்ஷமம் ரணே ।
ஸமாகமம் கோஸலராஜஸூநுநா ।
இதம் ஹி பூய: ஸ்ருணு வாக்யமுத்தமம்
க்ஷமம் ச யுக்தம் ச நிஸாசரேஸ்வர ॥
ahaṃ tu manyē tava na kṣamaṃ raṇē ।
samāgamaṃ kōsalarājasūnunā ।
idaṃ hi bhūyaḥ ṡṛṇu vākyamuttamaṃ
kṣamaṃ ca yuktaṃ ca niṡācarēṡvara ॥
As for me, I do not think it is
wise for you to face the
prince of Kōsala kingdom in a fight.
O lord of night-rovers, I will tell you
one more thing that is relevant, apt and better.

இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே ஸப்தத்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥

3.37.15 ஸரார்சிஷமநாத்ருஷ்யம்
சாபகங்கேந்தநம் ரணே ।
ராமாக்நிம் ஸஹஸா தீப்தம்
ந ப்ரவேஷ்டும் த்வமர்ஹஸி ॥
ṡarārciṣamanādhṛṣyaṃ
cāpakhaṅgēndhanaṃ raṇē ।
rāmāgniṃ sahasā dīptaṃ
na pravēṣṭuṃ tvamarhasi ॥
You should not hurry to throw yourself
into the invincible blazing fire that is Rama,
which has arrows for tongues of flame
and bow and sword for fuel!
3.37.16-17 தநுர்வ்யாதிததீப்தாஸ்யம்
ஸரார்சிஷமமர்ஷணம் ।
சாபபாணதரம் தீக்ஷ்ணம்
ஸத்ருஸைந்யப்ரஹாரிணம் ॥
ராஜ்யம் ஸுகம் ச ஸந்த்யஜ்ய
ஜீவிதம் சேஷ்டமாத்மந: ।
நாத்யாஸாதயிதும் தாத
ராமாந்தகமிஹார்ஹஸி ॥
dhanurvyāditadīptāsyaṃ
ṡarārciṣamamarṣaṇam ।
cāpabāṇadharaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ
ṡatrusainyaprahāriṇam ॥
rājyaṃ sukhaṃ ca santyajya
jīvitaṃ cēṣṭamātmanaḥ ।
nātyāsādayituṃ tāta
rāmāntakamihārhasi ॥
Throwing away your kingdom, comforts, life
and all else that you hold dear,
you should not rush headlong
towards death in the guise of Rāma,
who has a bow that is like a wide open flaming mouth
throwing out arrows like sparks,
and who decimates enemy forces
in his rage and wrath,
wielding that bow and arrows.
3.37.18 அப்ரமேயம் ஹி தத்தேஜோ
யஸ்ய ஸா ஜநகாத்மஜா ।
ந த்வம் ஸமர்தஸ்தாம் ஹர்தும்
ராமசாபாஸ்ரயம் வநே ॥
apramēyaṃ hi tattējō
yasya sā janakātmajā ।
na tvaṃ samarthastāṃ hartuṃ
rāmacāpāṡrayaṃ vanē ॥
Measureless is the strength of him
who has that daughter of Janaka for his own.
You are not capable of carrying her off
who is in the Vana under the protection of Rāma’s bow.
3.37.19 தஸ்ய ஸா நரஸிம்ஹஸ்ய
ஸிம்ஹோரஸ்கஸ்ய பாமிநீ ।
ப்ராணேப்யோऽபி ப்ரியதரா
பார்யா நித்யமநுவ்ரதா ॥
tasya sā narasiṃhasya
siṃhōraskasya bhāminī ।
prāṇēbhyō'pi priyatarā
bhāryā nityamanuvratā ॥
That lady is an ever devoted wife of
that lion among men, who has a leonine chest.
She is dearer to him than his own life.
3.37.20 ந ஸா தர்ஷயிதும் ஸக்யா
மைதில்யோஜஸ்விந: ப்ரியா ।
தீப்தஸ்யேவ ஹுதாஸஸ்ய
ஸிகா ஸீதா ஸுமத்யமா ॥
na sā dharṣayituṃ ṡakyā
maithilyōjasvinaḥ priyā ।
dīptasyēva hutāṡasya
ṡikhā sītā sumadhyamā ॥
That princess of Mithilā, of slender waist,
the darling of the supremely radiant (Rāma),
can not be held any more than the
flames of a blazing fire can be.
3.37.21 கிமுத்யமமிமம் வ்யர்தம்
க்ருத்வா தே ராக்ஷஸாதிப ।
த்ருஷ்டஸ்சேத்வம் ரணே தேந
ததந்தம் தவ ஜீவிதம் ॥
kimudyamamimaṃ vyarthaṃ
kṛtvā tē rākṣasādhipa ।
dṛṣṭaṡcētvaṃ raṇē tēna
tadantaṃ tava jīvitam ॥
What is the point of this
futile effort, O king of Rākshasas!
It would be the end of your life
when he sets his eyes upon you in battle.
3.37.22 ஜீவிதம் ச ஸுகம் சைவ
ராஜ்யம் சைவ ஸுதுர்லபம் ।
யதீச்சஸி சிரம் போக்தும்
மா க்ருதா ராமவிப்ரியம் ॥
jīvitaṃ ca sukhaṃ caiva
rājyaṃ caiva sudurlabham ।
yadīcchasi ciraṃ bhōktuṃ
mā kṛthā rāmavipriyam ॥
If you like to enjoy for a while
this life, comforts and kingdom,
which are not easy to obtain,
do not get on the wrong side of Rāma.
3.37.23-24 ஸ ஸர்வைஸ்ஸசிவைஸ்ஸார்தம்
விபீஷணபுரோகமை: ।
மந்த்ரயித்வா து தர்மிஷ்டை:
க்ருத்வா நிஸ்சயமாத்மந: ।
தோஷாணாம் ச குணாநாம் ச
ஸம்ப்ரதார்ய பலாபலம் ।
ஆத்மநஸ்ச பலம் ஜ்ஞாத்வா
ராகவஸ்ய ச தத்வத: ।
ஹிதாஹிதம் விநிஸ்சித்ய
க்ஷமம் த்வம் கர்துமர்ஹஸி ॥
sa sarvaissacivaissārdham
vibhīṣaṇapurōgamaiḥ ।
mantrayitvā tu dharmiṣṭhaiḥ
kṛtvā niṡcayamātmanaḥ ।
dōṣāṇāṃ ca guṇānāṃ ca
sampradhārya balābalam ।
ātmanaṡca balaṃ jńātvā
rāghavasya ca tatvataḥ ।
hitāhitaṃ viniṡcitya
kṣamaṃ tvaṃ kartumarhasi ॥
Hence you should take a firm decision
after getting counsel from Vibheeshaṇa and
other ministers who are Dharmātmas
and weighing the pros and cons.
You should take an honest count
of your strengths and weaknesses and those of Rāghava.
You should figure out which is good and which is not,
and act accordingly.
3.37.25 அஹம் து மந்யே தவ ந க்ஷமம் ரணே ।
ஸமாகமம் கோஸலராஜஸூநுநா ।
இதம் ஹி பூய: ஸ்ருணு வாக்யமுத்தமம்
க்ஷமம் ச யுக்தம் ச நிஸாசரேஸ்வர ॥
ahaṃ tu manyē tava na kṣamaṃ raṇē ।
samāgamaṃ kōsalarājasūnunā ।
idaṃ hi bhūyaḥ ṡṛṇu vākyamuttamaṃ
kṣamaṃ ca yuktaṃ ca niṡācarēṡvara ॥
As for me, I do not think it is
wise for you to face the
prince of Kōsala kingdom in a fight.
O lord of night-rovers, I will tell you
one more thing that is relevant, apt and better.

Thus concludes the thirty seventh Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
