Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 40
In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa, not taking kindly to Māreeca’s advice, rebukes him for giving unsolicited advices. He accuses him of insubordination to the king and warns of the consequences. He once again repeats what Māreeca has to do and threatens to kill him if he does not comply with his plan.
3.40.1 மாரீசஸ்ய து தத்வாக்யம்
க்ஷமம் யுக்தம் ச ராவண: ।
உக்தோ ந ப்ரதிஜக்ராஹ
மர்துகாம இவௌஷதம் ॥
mārīcasya tu tadvākyaṃ
kṣamaṃ yuktaṃ ca rāvaṇaḥ ।
uktō na pratijagrāha
martukāma ivauṣadham ॥
Rāvaṇa did not accept that
appropriate and right advice of Māreeca
like one who is bent on dying
will not accept medicine.
3.40.2 தம் பத்யஹிதவக்தாரம்
மாரீசம் ராக்ஷஸாதிப: ।
அப்ரவீத்பருஷம் வாக்யம்
அயுக்தம் காலசோதித: ॥
taṃ pathyahitavaktāraṃ
mārīcaṃ rākṣasādhipaḥ ।
abravītparuṣaṃ vākyam
ayuktaṃ kālacōditaḥ ॥
Rather, propelled by destiny,
that lord of Rākshasas responded harshly
to Māreeca who had given him such
wholesome advice for his own good.
3.40.3 யத்கிலைததயுக்தார்தம்
மாரீச மயி கத்யதே ।
வாக்யம் நிஷ்பலமத்யர்தம்
உப்தம் பீஜமிவோஷரே ॥
yatkilaitadayuktārthaṃ
mārīca mayi kathyatē ।
vākyaṃ niṣphalamatyartham
uptaṃ bījamivōṣarē ॥
Whatever you said to me,
O Māreeca, makes no sense.
It is completely wasted
like a seed sown in saline soil.
3.40.4-5 த்வத்வாக்யைர்ந து மாம் ஸக்யம்
பேதும் ராமஸ்ய ஸம்யுகே ।
பாபஸீலஸ்ய மூர்கஸ்ய
மாநுஷஸ்ய விஸேஷத: ।
யஸ்த்யக்த்வா ஸுஹ்ருதோ ராஜ்யம்
மாதரம் பிதரம் ததா ।
ஸ்த்ரீவாக்யம் ப்ராக்ருதம் ஸ்ருத்வா
வநமேகபதே கத: ॥
tvadvākyairna tu māṃ ṡakyaṃ
bhētuṃ rāmasya saṃyugē ।
pāpaṡīlasya mūrkhasya
mānuṣasya viṡēṣataḥ ।
yastyaktvā suhṛdō rājyaṃ
mātaraṃ pitaraṃ tathā ।
strīvākyaṃ prākṛtaṃ ṡrutvā
vanamēkapadē gataḥ ॥
You cannot scare me away with those words
about combat with the foolish and sinful Rāma,
given especially that he is a mere human!
He left his friends, kingdom, father and mother
and took to the Vana in an instant
obeying the word of an ordinary woman.
3.40.6 அவஸ்யந்து மயா தஸ்ய
ஸம்யுகே கரகாதிந: ।
ப்ராணை: ப்ரியதரா ஸீதா
ஹர்தவ்யா தவ ஸந்நிதௌ ॥
avaṡyantu mayā tasya
saṃyugē kharaghātinaḥ ।
prāṇaiḥ priyatarā sītā
hartavyā tava sannidhau ॥
I shall certainly have a fight and abduct Seetā,
who is dearer than life to that slayer of Khara,
right in front of you!
3.40.7 ஏவம் மே நிஸ்சிதா புத்தி:
ஹ்ருதி மாரீச வர்ததே ।
ந வ்யாவர்தயிதும் ஸக்யா
ஸேந்த்ரைரபி ஸுராஸுரை: ॥
ēvaṃ mē niṡcitā buddhiḥ
hṛdi mārīca vartatē ।
na vyāvartayituṃ ṡakyā
sēndrairapi surāsuraiḥ ॥
I have set my heart upon this thought, O Māreeca!
Even all the Suras, Asuras and Indra combined,
cannot dissuade me.
3.40.8 தோஷம் குணம் வா ஸம்ப்ருஷ்ட:
த்வமேவம் வக்துமர்ஹஸி ।
அபாயம் வாப்யுபாயம் வா
கார்யஸ்யாஸ்ய விநிஸ்சயே ॥
dōṣaṃ guṇaṃ vā sampṛṣṭaḥ
tvamēvaṃ vaktumarhasi ।
apāyaṃ vāpyupāyaṃ vā
kāryasyāsya viniṡcayē ॥
You should speak about
the virtues and issues, and risks and merits
of this idea, only if you are asked.
3.40.9 ஸம்ப்ருஷ்டேந து வக்தவ்யம்
ஸசிவேந விபஸ்சிதா ।
உத்யதாஞ்ஜலிநா ராஜ்ஞே
ய இச்சேத்பூதிமாத்மந: ॥
sampṛṣṭēna tu vaktavyaṃ
sacivēna vipaṡcitā ।
udyatāñjalinā rājñē
ya icchēdbhūtimātmanaḥ ॥
A counselor, who seeks his own well being,
should respond to a king in all deference
with palms joined and raised high,
when advice is sought.
3.40.10 வாக்யமப்ரதிகூலம் து
ம்ருதுபூர்வம் ஹிதம் ஸுபம் ।
உபசாரேண யுக்தம் ச
வக்தவ்யோ வஸுதாதிப: ॥
vākyamapratikūlaṃ tu
mṛdupūrvaṃ hitaṃ ṡubham ।
upacārēṇa yuktaṃ ca
vaktavyō vasudhādhipaḥ ॥
One should not contradict the king.
One should say only what is good and helpful;
that too in a pleasing manner and
with all the customary obedience.
3.40.11 ஸாவமர்தம் து யத்வாக்யம்
மாரீச ஹிதமுச்யதே ।
நாபிநந்ததி தத்ராஜா
மாநார்ஹோ மாநவர்ஜிதம் ॥
sāvamardaṃ tu yadvākyaṃ
mārīca hitamucyatē ।
nābhinandati tadrājā
mānārhō mānavarjitam ॥
O Māreeca! A king, who is entitled to all respect,
will not appreciate a counsel, however wholesome,
that is tendered with irreverence and condescension!
3.40.12 பஞ்ச ரூபாணி ராஜாநோ
தாரயந்த்யமிதௌஜஸ: ।
அக்நேரிந்த்ரஸ்ய ஸோமஸ்ய
வருணஸ்ய யமஸ்ய ச ॥
pañca rūpāṇi rājānō
dhārayantyamitaujasaḥ ।
agnērindrasya sōmasya
varuṇasya yamasya ca ॥
The kings of extraordinary abilities
have five faces to them, that of
Agni, Indra, Sōma, Varuṇa and Yama!
3.40.13-14a ஔஷ்ண்யம் ததா விக்ரமம் ச
ஸௌம்யம் தண்டம் ப்ரஸந்நதாம் ।
தாரயந்தி மஹாத்மாநோ
ராஜாந: க்ஷணதாசர ।
தஸ்மாத்ஸர்வாஸ்வவஸ்தாஸு
மாந்யா: பூஜ்யாஸ்ச பார்திவா: ॥
auṣṇyaṃ tathā vikramaṃ ca
saumyaṃ daṇḍaṃ prasannatām ।
dhārayanti mahātmānō
rājānaḥ kṣaṇadācara ।
tasmātsarvāsvavasthāsu
mānyāḥ pūjyāṡca pārthivāḥ ॥
O Rākshasa! Kings of great order
can be scorching or soothing,
shower grace or wield rod
and display their prowess as needed!
Hence, the rulers of earth are
honored and respected at
all times and in all situations!
3.40.14b-15a த்வம் து தர்மமவிஜ்ஞாய
கேவலம் மோஹமாஸ்தித: ।
அப்யாகதம் மாம் தௌராத்ம்யாத்
பருஷம் வக்துமிச்சஸி ॥
tvaṃ tu dharmamavijñāya
kēvalaṃ mōhamāsthitaḥ ।
abhyāgataṃ māṃ daurātmyāt
paruṣaṃ vaktumicchasi ॥
But you, a wretched one,
not knowing this Dharma,
and completely taken over by delusions,
are bent on speaking harshly
to me, for having approached you.
3.40.15b-16a குணதோஷௌ ந ப்ருச்சாமி
க்ஷமம் சாத்மநி ராக்ஷஸ ।
மயோக்தம் தவ சைதாவத்
ஸம்ப்ரத்யமிதவிக்ரம ॥
guṇadōṣau na pṛcchāmi
kṣamaṃ cātmani rākṣasa ।
mayōktaṃ tava caitāvat
saṃpratyamitavikrama ॥
O Rākshasa! You are not being asked
about the merits or demerits,
or whether it is appropriate for me!
O Rākshasa of immeasurable prowess,
I have already told you
what exactly is needed at this hour.
3.40.16b-17a அஸ்மிம்ஸ்து த்வம் மஹாக்ருத்யே
ஸாஹாய்யம் கர்துமர்ஹஸி ।
ஸ்ருணு தத்கர்ம ஸாஹாய்யே
யத்கார்யம் வசநாந்மம ॥
asmiṃstu tvaṃ mahākṛtyē
sāhāyyaṃ kartumarhasi ।
ṡṛṇu tatkarma sāhāyyē
yatkāryaṃ vacanānmama ॥
You must help me in this big adventure.

3.40.17b-18 ஸௌவர்ணஸ்த்வம் ம்ருகோ பூத்வா
சித்ரோ ரஜதபிந்துபி: ।
ஆஸ்ரமே தஸ்ய ராமஸ்ய
ஸீதாயா: ப்ரமுகே சர ।
ப்ரலோபயித்வா வைதேஹீம்
யதேஷ்டம் கந்துமர்ஹஸி ॥
sauvarṇastvaṃ mṛgō bhūtvā
citrō rajatabindubhiḥ ।
āṡramē tasya rāmasya
sītāyāḥ pramukhē cara ।
pralōbhayitvā vaidēhīṃ
yathēṣṭaṃ gantumarhasi ॥
Take the form of a golden-hued deer
with attractive silvery spots and
move about the Āṡrama of Rāma in front of Seetā.
After luring Vaidēhi, go wherever you like. This Ṡlōka is same as Ṡlōka 3.36.18.
3.40.19 த்வாம் து மாயாம்ருகம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
காஞ்சநம் ஜாதவிஸ்மயா ।
ஆநயைநமிதி க்ஷிப்ரம்
ராமம் வக்ஷ்யதி மைதிலீ ॥
tvāṃ tu māyāmṛgaṃ dṛṣṭvā
kāñcanaṃ jātavismayā ।
ānayainamiti kṣipraṃ
rāmaṃ vakṣyati maithilī ॥
Then Maithili, fascinated by
the sight of the alluring deer,
will tell Rāma ‘catch this one for me, quick!’
3.40.20 அபக்ராந்தே து காகுத்ஸ்தே
தூரம் யாத்வாப்யுதாஹர ।
ஹா ஸீதே லக்ஷ்மணேத்யேவம்
ராமவாக்யாநுரூபகம் ॥
apakrāntē tu kākutsthē
dūraṃ yātvāpyudāhara ।
hā sītē lakṣmaṇētyēvaṃ
rāmavākyānurūpakam ॥
Once Kākutstha comes (chasing you),
go far enough and then say, mimicking Rāma’s voice:
‘Ha Seetā! Ha Lakshmaṇa!’
3.40.21 தச்ச்ருத்வா ராமபதவீம்
ஸீதயா ச ப்ரசோதித: ।
அநுகச்சதி ஸம்ப்ராந்த:
ஸௌமித்ரிரபி ஸௌஹ்ருதாத் ॥
tacchrutvā rāmapadavīṃ
sītayā ca pracōditaḥ ।
anugacchati sambhrāntaḥ
saumitrirapi sauhṛdāt ॥
Hearing that, Sowmitri also,
confused and concerned, and prodded by Seetā,
will follow the same path taken by Rāma.
3.40.22 அபக்ராந்தே ச காகுத்ஸ்தே
லக்ஷ்மணே ச யதாஸுகம் ।
ஆநயிஷ்யாமி வைதேஹீம்
ஸஹஸ்ராக்ஷஸ்ஸசீமிவ ॥
apakrāntē ca kākutsthē
lakṣmaṇē ca yathāsukham ।
ānayiṣyāmi vaidēhīṃ
sahasrākṣaṡṡacīmiva ॥
With Kākutstha and Lakshmaṇa gone away,
I will happily carry away Vaidēhi,
like the thousand-eyed did Ṡacee.
3.40.23 ஏவம் க்ருத்வாத்விதம் கார்யம்
யதேஷ்டம் கச்ச ராக்ஷஸ ।
ராஜ்யஸ்யார்தம் ப்ரயச்சாமி
மாரீச தவ ஸுவ்ரத ॥
ēvaṃ kṛtvātvidaṃ kāryaṃ
yathēṣṭaṃ gaccha rākṣasa ।
rājyasyārdhaṃ prayacchāmi
mārīca tava suvrata ॥
After completing this task,
O Rākshasa, go wherever you may please.
I will give you one-half of my kingdom,
O Mareeca of proven resolve!
3.40.24 கச்ச ஸௌம்ய ஸிவம் மார்கம்
கார்யஸ்யாஸ்ய விவ்ருத்தயே ।
அஹம் த்வாநுகமிஷ்யாமி
ஸரதோ தண்டகாவநம் ॥
gaccha saumya ṡivaṃ mārgaṃ
kāryasyāsya vivṛddhayē ।
ahaṃ tvānugamiṣyāmi
sarathō daṇḍakāvanam ॥
O gentle one! Follow this wonderful
path for furthering the cause!
I will follow you to the
Daṇḍaka Vana in my chariot.
3.40.25 ப்ராப்ய ஸீதாமயுத்தேந
வஞ்சயித்வா து ராகவம் ।
லங்காம் ப்ரதிகமிஷ்யாமி
க்ருதகார்யஸ்ஸஹ த்வயா ॥
prāpya sītāmayuddhēna
vañcayitvā tu rāghavam ।
laṅkāṃ pratigamiṣyāmi
kṛtakāryassaha tvayā ॥
Hoodwinking Rāghava thus
and taking Seetā without waging a fight,
I shall, my purpose achieved,
go back to Laṅkā along with you.
3.40.26 ந சேத்கரோஷி மாரீச
ஹந்மி த்வாமஹமத்ய வை ।
ஏதத்கார்யமவஸ்யம் மே
பலாதபி கரிஷ்யஸி ।
ராஜ்ஞோ ஹி ப்ரதிகூலஸ்தோ
ந ஜாது ஸுகமேததே ॥
na cētkarōṣi mārīca
hanmi tvāmahamadya vai ।
ētatkāryamavaṡyaṃ mē
balādapi kariṣyasi ।
rājñō hi pratikūlasthō
na jātu sukhamēdhatē ॥
If you do not do this, O Māreeca,
I will kill you right now.
I shall use all my force to make you do this
and there is no way out (for you).
One can never turn against a king
and hope for happiness ahead!
3.40.27 ஆஸாத்ய தம் ஜீவிதஸம்ஸயஸ்தே
ம்ருத்யுர்த்ருவோ ஹ்யத்ய மயா விருத்ய ।
ஏதத்யதாவத்ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ய புத்த்யா
யதத்ர பத்யம் குரு தத்ததா த்வம் ॥
āsādya taṃ jīvitasaṃṡayastē
mṛtyurdhruvō hyadya mayā virudhya ।
ētadyathāvatpratigṛhya buddhyā
yadatra pathyaṃ kuru tattathā tvam ॥
Your life may be at risk if you go to him.
But your death is certain if you fall out with me.
Hence consider this carefully and
do what is best in this situation.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே சத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē catvāriṃṡassargaḥ ।
Thus concludes the fortieth Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
