3.43.29 கஸ்ய ரூபமிதம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
ஜாம்பூநதமயம் ப்ரபோ ।
நாநாரத்நமயம் திவ்யம்
ந மநோ விஸ்மயம் வ்ரஜேத் ॥
kasya rūpamidaṃ dṛṣṭvā
jāmbūnadamayaṃ prabhō ।
nānāratnamayaṃ divyam
na manō vismayaṃ vrajēt ॥
O lord! Whose mind will not be
taken by amazement at the
sight of this splendid golden deer,
that seems to be studded with every kind of gem?
3.43.30 மாம்ஸஹேதோரபி ம்ருகாந்
விநோதார்தம் ச தந்விந: ।
க்நந்தி லக்ஷ்மண ராஜாநோ
ம்ருகயாயாம் மஹாவநே ॥
māṃsahētōrapi mṛgān
vinōdārthaṃ ca dhanvina: ।
ghnanti lakṣmaṇa rājānō
mṛgayāyāṃ mahāvanē ॥
For the sake of meat as well as
for practicing archery,
kings go hunting in great Vanas
killing the animals.
3.43.31 தநாநி வ்யவஸாயேந
விசீயந்தே மஹாவநே ।
தாதவோ விவிதாஸ்சாபி
மணிரத்நஸுவர்ணிந: ॥
dhanāni vyavasāyēna
vicīyantē mahāvanē ।
dhātavō vividhāṡcāpi
maṇiratnasuvarṇinaḥ ॥
It is only with effort that
various kinds of minerals, gems and gold,
the wealth of the great Vana, are collected.
3.43.32 தத்ஸாரமகிலம் நணாம்
தநம் நிசயவர்தநம் ।
மநஸா சிந்திதம் ஸர்வம்
யதா ஸுக்ரஸ்ய லக்ஷ்மண ॥
tatsāramakhilaṃ n ṇām
dhanaṃ nicayavardhanam ।
manasā cintitaṃ sarvam
yathā ṡukrasya lakṣmaṇa ॥
O Lakshmaṇa! All that invaluable wealth
enhances the coffers (of the kings),
just as all the (unfulfilled) wishes
of men enhance Ṡukra’s treasure. What happens to the funds granted to an institution or department or a program, if it is dissolved by the time the funds are received?
There is a saying that if people wish for something and die before it is granted, it will go to Ṡukra, the teacher of Rākshasas.
3.43.33 அர்தீ யேநார்தக்ருத்யேந
ஸம்வ்ரஜத்யவிசாரயந் ।
தமர்தமர்தஸாஸ்த்ரஜ்ஞா:
ப்ராஹுரர்த்யாஸ்ச லக்ஷ்மண ॥
arthī yēnārthakṛtyēna
saṃvrajatyavicārayan ।
tamarthamarthaṡāstrajñāḥ
prāhurarthyāṡca lakṣmaṇa ॥
O Lakshmaṇa! Scholars of the science of wealth
and the experts in garnering it
agree that true wealth is that
which is pursued by those who truly yearn for it,
forging ahead with no hesitation whatsoever.
3.43.34 ஏதஸ்ய ம்ருகரத்நஸ்ய
பரார்த்யே காஞ்சநத்வசி ।
உபவேக்ஷ்யதி வைதேஹீ
மயா ஸஹ ஸுமத்யமா ॥
ētasya mṛgaratnasya
parārdhyē kāñcanatvaci ।
upavēkṣyati vaidēhī
mayā saha sumadhyamā ॥
Vaidēhi of slender waist shall sit,
along with me, on the wonderful
golden skin of this gem of a deer!
3.43.35 ந காதலீ ந ப்ரியகீ
ந ப்ரவேணீ ந சாவிகீ ।
பவேதேதஸ்ய ஸத்ருஸீ
ஸ்பர்ஸநேநேதி மே மதி: ॥
na kādalī na priyakī
na pravēṇī na cāvikī ।
bhavēdētasya sadṛṡī
sparṡanēnēti mē matiḥ ॥
I think neither the touch of the
skin of Kādalee deer, nor that of Priyakee type,
nor that of Pravēṇee type, nor that of a sheep,
can rival that of this deer.
3.43.36 ஏஷ சைவ ம்ருகஸ்ஸ்ரீமாந்
யஸ்ச திவ்யோ நபஸ்சர: ।
உபாவேதௌ ம்ருகௌ திவ்யௌ
தாராம்ருகமஹீம்ருகௌ ॥
ēṣa caiva mṛgaṡṡrīmān
yaṡca divyō nabhaṡcaraḥ ।
ubhāvētau mṛgau divyau
tārāmṛgamahīmṛgau ॥
There are only two splendid deer,
this exquisite one and the one in the moon.
This one on the earth and that one in the sky
are the only true deer (that are worthy of mention).
3.43.37 யதி வாऽயம் ததா யந்மாம்
பவேத்வதஸி லக்ஷ்மண ।
மாயைஷா ராக்ஷஸஸ்யேதி
கர்தவ்யோஸ்ய வதோ மயா ॥
yadi vā'yaṃ tathā yanmām
bhavēdvadasi lakṣmaṇa ।
māyaiṣā rākṣasasyēti
kartavyōsya vadhō mayā ॥
O Lakshmaṇa, even if this is a trick of Rākshasa,
as you say to me, it deserves to be killed.
3.43.38 ஏதேந ஹி ந்ருஸம்ஸேந
மாரீசேநாக்ருதாத்மநா ।
வநே விசரதா பூர்வம்
ஹிம்ஸிதா முநிபுங்கவா: ॥
ētēna hi nṛṡaṃsēna
mārīcēnākṛtātmanā ।
vanē vicaratā pūrvam
hiṃsitā munipuṅgavāḥ ॥
It is this cruel and evil Māreeca
that harrowed the eminent Munis
when he used to roam in the Vana.
3.43.39 உத்தாய பஹவோ யேந
ம்ருகயாயாம் ஜநாதிபா: ।
நிஹதா: பரமேஷ்வாஸா:
தஸ்மாத்வத்யஸ்த்வயம் ம்ருக: ॥
utthāya bahavō yēna
mṛgayāyāṃ janādhipāḥ ।
nihatāḥ paramēṣvāsāḥ
tasmādvadhyastvayaṃ mṛgaḥ ॥
Many kings who were great archers
were also killed by him in the past,
when he accosted them while they were hunting.
Hence also, this animal deserves to be killed.
3.43.40 புரஸ்தாதிஹ வாதாபி:
பரிபூய தபஸ்விந: ।
உதரஸ்தோ த்விஜாந்ஹந்தி
ஸ்வகர்போऽஸ்வதரீமிவ ॥
purastādiha vātāpiḥ
paribhūya tapasvinaḥ ।
udarasthō dvijānhanti
svagarbhō'ṡvatarīmiva ॥
Vātāpi, in the past, used to
approach Tapasvis with little regard and
kill them, emerging from their stomachs,
just as certain baby mules do.
3.43.41 ஸ கதாசிச்சிரால்லோபாத்
ஆஸஸாத மஹாமுநிம் ।
அகஸ்த்யம் தேஜஸா யுக்தம்
பக்ஷஸ்தஸ்ய பபூவ ஹ ॥
sa kadāciccirāllōbhāt
āsasāda mahāmunim ।
agastyaṃ tējasā yuktam
bhakṣastasya babhūva ha ॥
Then finally, one day he approached,
in his greed, Agastya, a great Muni of great power,
and became his meal.
3.43.42 ஸமுத்தாநே வ தத்ரூபம்
கர்துகாமம் ஸமீக்ஷ்ய தம் ।
உத்ஸ்மயித்வா து பகவாந்
வாதாபிமிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
samutthānē va tadrūpam
kartukāmaṃ samīkṣya tam ।
utsmayitvā tu bhagavān
vātāpimidamabravīt ॥
Seeing him trying to get up and regain his form,
the Bhagawān said to him laughing:
3.43.43 த்வயாऽவிகண்ய வாதாபே
பரிபூதாஸ்ஸ்வதேஜஸா ।
ஜீவலோகே த்விஜஸ்ரேஷ்டா:
தஸ்மாதஸி ஜராம் கத: ॥
tvayā'vigaṇya vātāpē
paribhūtāssvatējasā ।
jīvalōkē dvijaṡrēṣṭhāḥ
tasmādasi jarāṃ gataḥ ॥
Hey Vātāpi! Many eminent Brāhmaṇas
have met their end in this world
because of your power and utter disregard.
So, here you go, completely digested!
3.43.44-45a ததேவம் ந பவேத்ரக்ஷ:
வாதாபிரிவ லக்ஷ்மண ।
மத்விதம் யோऽதிமந்யேத
தர்மநித்யம் ஜிதேந்த்ரியம் ॥
பவேத்ததோऽயம் வாதாபி:
அகஸ்த்யேநேவ மாம் கத: ।
tadēvaṃ na bhavēdrakṣaḥ
vātāpiriva lakṣmaṇa ।
madvidhaṃ yō'timanyēta
dharmanityaṃ jitēndriyam ॥
bhavēddhatō'yaṃ vātāpiḥ
agastyēnēva māṃ gataḥ ।
Just like Vātāpi, this Rākshasa
is also not going to last.
If he transgresses against the
person like me, who always adheres to Dharma
and who has mastered his senses,
he will meet with the same fate
as Vātāpi had met from Agastya.
3.43.45b-46a இஹ த்வம் பவ ஸம்நத்தோ
யந்த்ரிதோ ரக்ஷ மைதிலீம் ।
அஸ்யாமாயத்தமஸ்மாகம்
யத்க்ருத்யம் ரகுநந்தந ॥
iha tvaṃ bhava saṃnaddō
yantritō rakṣa maithilīm ।
asyāmāyattamasmākam
yatkṛtyaṃ raghunandana ॥
O delight of Raghu dynasty,
stay here in full alert and
guard Maithili with all your attention,
for whatever we have to do
depends on (keeping) her (safe).
3.43.46b-47a அஹமேநம் வதிஷ்யாமி
க்ரஹீஷ்யாம்யபி வா ம்ருகம் ।
யாவத்கச்சாமி ஸௌமித்ரே
ம்ருகமாநயிதும் த்ருதம் ॥
ahamēnaṃ vadhiṣyāmi
grahīṣyāmyapi vā mṛgam ।
yāvadgacchāmi saumitrē
mṛgamānayituṃ drutam ॥
I will kill this deer or catch it.
O Sowmitri! Let me go quick to get the animal.
3.43.47b-48a பஸ்ய லக்ஷ்மண வைதேஹீம்
ம்ருகத்வசி கதஸ்ப்ருஹாம் ।
த்வசா ப்ரதாநயா ஹ்யேஷ
ம்ருகோऽத்ய ந பவிஷ்யதி ॥
paṡya lakṣmaṇa vaidēhīm
mṛgatvaci gataspṛhām ।
tvacā pradhānayā hyēṣa
mṛgō'dya na bhaviṣyati ॥
O Lakshmaṇa, keep your eye on Vaidēhi,
who has lost her mind over the hide of this deer.
Now, since the hide is of primary interest,
this deer is not going to survive.
3.43.48b-49 அப்ரமத்தேந தே பாவ்யம்
ஆஸ்ரமஸ்தேந ஸீதயா ।
யாவத்ப்ருஷதமேகேந
ஸாயகேந நிஹந்ம்யஹம் ।
ஹத்வைதச்சர்ம சாதாய
ஸீக்ரமேஷ்யாமி லக்ஷ்மண ॥
apramattēna tē bhāvyam
āṡramasthēna sītayā ।
yāvatpṛṣatamēkēna
sāyakēna nihanmyaham ।
hatvaitaccarma cādāya
ṡīghramēṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa ॥
Your job is to stay in full alert
in the Āṡrama along with Seetā.
I shall kill this spotted deer with a single arrow.
After killing it, I will take its hide
and return quickly, O Lakshmaṇa!
3.43.50 ப்ரதக்ஷிணேநாதிபலேந பக்ஷிணா
ஜடாயுஷா புத்திமதா ச லக்ஷ்மண ।
பவாப்ரமத்த: பரிக்ருஹ்ய மைதிலீம்
ப்ரதிக்ஷணம் ஸர்வத ஏவ ஸங்கித: ॥
pradakṣiṇēnātibalēna pakṣiṇā
jaṭāyuṣā buddhimatā ca lakṣmaṇa ।
bhavāpramattaḥ parigṛhya maithilīṃ
pratikṣaṇaṃ sarvata ēva ṡaṅkitaḥ ॥
Along with the exceedingly strong
and intelligent bird Jaṭāyu,
keep constant vigil, O Lakshmaṇa,
prepared to meet danger
at any moment from any quarter,
with Maithili in your charge.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே த்ரிசத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē tricatvāriṃṡassargaḥ ।

ஸீக்ரமேஷ்யாமி லக்ஷ்மண ॥
apramattēna tē bhāvyam
āṡramasthēna sītayā ।
yāvatpṛṣatamēkēna
sāyakēna nihanmyaham ।
hatvaitaccarma cādāya
ṡīghramēṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa ॥
Your job is to stay in full alert
in the Āṡrama along with Seetā.
I shall kill this spotted deer with a single arrow.
After killing it, I will take its hide
and return quickly, O Lakshmaṇa!
3.43.50 ப்ரதக்ஷிணேநாதிபலேந பக்ஷிணா
ஜடாயுஷா புத்திமதா ச லக்ஷ்மண ।
பவாப்ரமத்த: பரிக்ருஹ்ய மைதிலீம்
ப்ரதிக்ஷணம் ஸர்வத ஏவ ஸங்கித: ॥
pradakṣiṇēnātibalēna pakṣiṇā
jaṭāyuṣā buddhimatā ca lakṣmaṇa ।
bhavāpramattaḥ parigṛhya maithilīṃ
pratikṣaṇaṃ sarvata ēva ṡaṅkitaḥ ॥
Along with the exceedingly strong
and intelligent bird Jaṭāyu,
keep constant vigil, O Lakshmaṇa,
prepared to meet danger
at any moment from any quarter,
with Maithili in your charge.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே த்ரிசத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē tricatvāriṃṡassargaḥ ।
Thus concludes the forty third Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
