    Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 4

    Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 4
In this Sarga, Hanumān asks Rāma and Lakshmaṇa who they are and why they have come to the impenetrable, dense Vana. Lakshmaṇa tells Hanumān about Daṡaratha, about Rāma and the loss of kingdom and their stay in the Vana. He tells Hanumān that both Seetā, Rāma’s wife, and he himself, followed Rāma to the Vana and that Seetā was abducted by a Rakshasa when she was alone, and that Danu, son of Diti had told them about Sugreeva, who could help them find Seetā. Lakshmaṇa tells Hanumān, with tears welling in his eyes, that Rāma, as great and capable as he was, would now have to take refuge in Sugreeva, lord of Vānaras.
With the exchange between them, Hanumān feels that the time has come for Sugreeva to regain his kingdom and Lakshmaṇa feels that Rāma’s object is as good as achieved. Hanumān then flies to Sugreeva, carrying Rāma and Lakshmana on his back.
    tataḥ prahṛṣṭau hanumān
    kṛtyavāniti tadvacaḥ ।
    ṡrutvā madhurasambhāṣam
    sugrīvaṃ manasā gataḥ ॥
On hearing those words that fell sweetly on the ear,
Hanumān, whose purpose seemed to have been served,
felt delighted. His thoughts went back to Sugreeva:
    4.4.2 பவ்யோ ராஜ்யாகமஸ்தஸ்ய
    bhavyō rājyāgamastasya
    sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ ।
    yadayaṃ kṛtyavānprāptaḥ
    kṛtyaṃ caitadupāgatam ॥
    It seems that Mahātma Sugreeva
    is going to get his kingdom back;
for, he (Rāma) seems to have come with a purpose
for which the time is ripe.
    tataḥ paramasaṃhṛṣṭō
    hanumān plavagarṣabhaḥ ।
    pratyuvāca tatō vākyam
    rāmaṃ vākyaviṡāradaḥ ॥
And Hanumān, the bull among Vānaras,
    who was skilled in speech,
felt extremely happy and responded to Rāma:
    4.4.4 கிமர்தம் த்வம் வநம் கோரம்
    பம்பாகாநநமண்டிதம் ।
    ஆகதஸ்ஸாநுஜோ துர்கம்
    நாநாவ்யாலம்ருகாயுதம் ॥
    kimarthaṃ tvaṃ vanaṃ ghōram
    pampākānanamaṇḍitam ।
    āgatassānujō durgam
    nānāvyālamṛgāyutam ॥
What brought you, along with your younger brother,
to this dreadful and impenetrable Vana
which is overrun with wild beasts and other animals,
except for the beautiful patch of woods that surround Pampa? There must have been some corruption in the text of this Ṡlōka, because Hanumān does not yet know that Lakshmaṇa is the brother of Rāma.

    tasya tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā
    lakṣmaṇō rāmacōditaḥ ।
    ācacakṣē mahātmānam
    rāmaṃ daṡarathātmajam ॥
    Hearing those words of his,
Lakshmaṇa, prodded by Rāma, told him
all about Mahātma Rāma, son of Daṡaratha:
    4.4.6 ராஜா தஸரதோ நாம
    த்யுதிமாந்தர்மவத்ஸல: ।
    சாதுர்வர்ண்யம் ஸ்வதர்மேண
    நித்யமேவாபிபாலயந் ॥
    rājā daṡarathō nāma
    dyutimāndharmavatsalaḥ ।
    cāturvarṇyaṃ svadharmēṇa
    nityamēvābhipālayan ॥
There was a brilliant king by name Daṡaratha
who guarded Dharma as if it was his own child.
He diligently discharged his duty of
    protecting all the four Varṇas.

    pitāmaha ivāparaḥ ।
    agniṣṭōmādibhiryajñaiḥ
    iṣṭavānāptadakṣiṇaiḥ ॥
There is no one who did not like him
and there is none that he did not like.
He was like the grandsire for all beings.
He performed many Yajñas including Agnishṭōma,
    giving honorariums generously.

    tasyāyaṃ pūrvajaḥ putrō
    rāmō nāma janaiḥ ṡrutaḥ।
    ṡaraṇyassarvabhūtānām

This is his eldest son, famed among men as Rāma.
He is the refuge of all beings and
is faithful in executing his father’s commands to the hilt.

    rājyādbhraṣṭō vanē vastum
    mayā sārdhamihāgataḥ ॥
This Veera excels among the sons
of Daṡaratha by virtue of his great qualities.
    He of every kingly virtue,
was enjoying all the royal luxuries,
when he was exiled from the kingdom and
came to live in this Vana, accompanied by me.

    bhāryayā ca mahātējāḥ
    sītayā'nugatō vaṡī ।
    dinakṣayē mahātējāḥ
    prabhayēva divākaraḥ ॥
And he, the supremely radiant one,
    a master of his senses,
was followed by his wife Seetā,
like the sun while setting, by the sunlight.

I am his younger brother, Lakshmaṇa by name.
His great qualities, his knowledge of many things
and his sense of gratitude, made me his humble servant.

    rahitē kāmarūpiṇā ।
    tacca na jñāyatē rakṣaḥ
    patnī yēnāsya sā hṛtā ॥
He, who deserves all luxuries and all honor,
having lost all that he had,
has taken to living in the Vana.
His wife was abducted when she was alone
by a Rākshasa, who could take any form at will.
We do not know who that Rākshasa
is, by whom she was abducted.

The son of Diti, Danu by name,
who was cursed with the form of a Rākshasa

Saying, ‘he of immense strength will be
able to find out the abductor of your wife’,
Danu ascended to heaven, happy and shining bright.

I have told everything as it is,
    to answer your question.
Rāma and I seek refuge in Sugreeva.

Once upon a time, he was a lord of the world,
giving away money and earning unequalled fame.
Now, he would like to take refuge in Sugreeva.
