    Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 5
    In this Sarga, Hanumān reaches the Malaya mountain and introduces Rāma and Lakshmaṇa to Sugreeva. He tells their story and about his wife Seetā being abducted by a Rākshasa. He also tells Sugreeva that they are seeking his friendship.
    Sugreeva feels very happy and tells Rāma that Rāma seeking his friendship is not only an honor but also of benefit to him. Then Hanumān prepares fire and Rāma and Sugreeva seal their friendship witnessed by fire. Both pledge allegiance to each other.
    Sugreeva tells about his brother Vāli who has abducted his wife, and fearing whom he stays in the impenetrable Vana. Sugreeva requests Rāma to do something that would relieve him from his fears. Rāma assures Sugreeva that he would kill Vāli that very day, with his sharp arrows. Sugreeva feels happy.
    As the two seal their friendship, the left eyes of Seetā, Vāli and Rāvaṇa twitch.
    4.5.1 ருஷ்யமூகாத்து ஹநுமாந்
    கத்வா து மலயம் கிரிம் ।
    ஆசசக்ஷே ததா வீரௌ
    கபிராஜாய ராகவௌ ॥
    ṛṣyamūkāttu hanumān
    gatvā tu malayaṃ girim ।
    ācacakṣē tadā vīrau
    kapirājāya rāghavau ॥
    Hanumān went to the Malaya mountain
    from Ṛshyamūka mountain,
    and told about the Rāghavas, the Veeras,
    to the king of the Vānaras.
    4.5.2 அயம் ராமோ மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞ
    ஸம்ப்ராப்தோ த்ருடவிக்ரம ।
    லக்ஷ்மணேந ஸஹ ப்ராத்ரா
    ராமோऽயம் ஸத்யவிக்ரம: ॥
    ayaṃ rāmō mahāprājña
    samprāptō dṛḍhavikrama ।
    lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā
    rāmō'yaṃ satyavikramaḥ ॥
    O sagacious one! O you of unfaltering prowess!
    This is Rāma, a man of true valor.
    He is here now along with his brother Lakshmaṇa.
    4.5.3 இக்ஷ்வாகூணாம் குலே ஜாதோ
    ராமோ தஸரதாத்மஜ: ।
    தர்மே நிகதிதஸ்சைவ
    பிதுர்நிர்தேஸபாரக: ॥
    ikṣvākūṇāṃ kulē jātō
    rāmō daṡarathātmajaḥ ।
    dharmē nigaditaṡcaiva
    piturnirdēṡapāragaḥ ॥
    Rāma, son of Daṡaratha,
    born into the lineage of Ikshwāku,
    is widely known for his adherence to Dharma
    and fidelity in carrying out the word of his father.
    4.5.4-5 ராஜஸூயாஸ்வமேதைஸ்ச
    வஹ்நிர்யேநாபிதர்பித: ।
    தக்ஷிணாஸ்ச ததோத்ஸ்ருஷ்டா
    காவஸ்ஸதஸஹஸ்ரஸ: ।
    தபஸா ஸத்யவாக்யேந
    வஸுதா யேந பாலிதா ।
    ஸ்த்ரீ ஹேதோஸ்தஸ்ய புத்ரோऽயம்
    ராமஸ்த்வாம் ஸரணம் கத: ॥
    rājasūyāṡvamēdhaiṡca
    vahniryēnābhitarpitaḥ ।
    dakṣiṇāṡca tathōtsṛṣṭā
    gāvaṡṡatasahasraṡaḥ ।
    tapasā satyavākyēna
    vasudhā yēna pālitā ।
    strī hētōstasya putrō'yam
    rāmastvāṃ ṡaraṇaṃ gataḥ ॥
    He, (Daṡaratha), propitiated Agni
    with the Rājasūya and Ashwamēdha Yajñas,
    giving away ample honorariums
    and gifting away cows in hundreds of thousands.
    He ruled the earth diligently upholding truth.
    This one, his son, had to live in the Vana
    because of a woman (Kaikēyee).
    4.5.6 தஸ்யாஸ்ய வஸதோऽரண்யே
    நியதஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
    ராவணேந ஹ்ருதா பார்யா
    ஸ த்வாம் ஸரணமாகத: ॥
    tasyāsya vasatō'raṇyē
    niyatasya mahātmanaḥ ।
    rāvaṇēna hṛtā bhāryā
    sa tvāṃ ṡaraṇamāgataḥ ॥
    While this Mahātma was leading a
    life of discipline in the Vana,
    his wife was carried off by Rāvaṇa;
    and he has come seeking our help.
    4.5.7 பவதா ஸக்யகாமௌ தௌ
    ப்ராதரௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ।
    ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்யார்சயஸ்வைதௌ
    பூஜநீயதமாவுபௌ ॥
    bhavatā sakhyakāmau tau
    bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ।
    pratigṛhyārcayasvaitau
    pūjanīyatamāvubhau ॥
    These brothers, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa,
    who are worthy of all respect and regard,
    have come seeking your friendship.
    You shall receive them with due honors.
    4.5.8 ஸ்ருத்வா ஹநுமதோ வாக்யம்
    ஸுக்ரீவோ ஹ்ருஷ்டமாநஸ: ।
    தர்ஸநீயதமோ பூத்வா
    ப்ரீத்யா ப்ரோவாச ராகவம் ॥
    ṡrutvā hanumatō vākyam
    sugrīvō hṛṣṭamānasaḥ ।
    darṡanīyatamō bhūtvā
    prītyā prōvāca rāghavam ॥
    Hearing those words of Hanumān,
    Sugreeva’s heart was filled with joy.
    With his entire being lit up,
    he said to Rāghava affectionately:
    4.5.9 பவாந்தர்மவிநீதஸ்ச
    விக்ராந்தஸ்ஸர்வவத்ஸல: ।
    ஆக்யாதா வாயுபுத்ரேண
    தத்த்வதோ மே பவத்குணா: ॥
    bhavāndharmavinītaṡca
    vikrāntassarvavatsalaḥ ।
    ākhyātā vāyuputrēṇa
    tattvatō mē bhavadguṇāḥ ॥
    You are an adherent of Dharma,
    your prowess is supreme and
    you are kind to all beings.
    I am informed of all of your virtues
    in detail by the son of Vāyu.
    4.5.10 தந்மமைவைஷ ஸத்காரோ
    லாபஸ்சைவோத்தம: ப்ரபோ ।
    யத்த்வமிச்சஸி ஸௌஹார்தம்
    வாநரேண மயா ஸஹ ॥
    tanmamaivaiṣa satkārō
    lābhaṡcaivōttamaḥ prabhō ।
    yattvamicchasi sauhārdam
    vānarēṇa mayā saha ॥
    O lord, that you should seek my friendship, a Vānara,
    is not only an honor, but also beneficial to me.
    4.5.11 ரோசதே யதி வா ஸக்யம்
    பாஹுரேஷ ப்ரஸாரித: ।
    க்ருஹ்யதாம் பாணிநா பாணி:
    மர்யாதா பத்யதாம் த்ருவா ॥
    rōcatē yadi vā sakhyam
    bāhurēṣa prasāritaḥ ।
    gṛhyatāṃ pāṇinā pāṇiḥ
    maryādā badhyatāṃ dhruvā ॥
    If you like my friendship,
    may you hold my stretched hand with your hand
    and let a gentlemen’s agreement bind us verily.
    4.5.12 ஏதத்து வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா
    ஸுக்ரீவேண ஸுபாஷிதம் ।
    ஸம்ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டமநா ஹஸ்தம்
    பீடயாமாஸ பாணிநா ।
    ஹ்ருத்யம் ஸௌஹ்ருதமாலம்ப்ய
    பர்யஷ்வஜத பீடிதம் ॥
    ētattu vacanaṃ ṡrutvā
    sugrīvēṇa subhāṣitam ।
    samprahṛṣṭamanā hastam
    pīḍayāmāsa pāṇinā ।
    hṛdyaṃ sauhṛdamālambya
    paryaṣvajata pīḍitam ॥
    On hearing Sugreeva’s well-spoken words,
    he (Rāma) was delighted and
    warmly pressed his hand with his.
    With affection overwhelming his heart,
    he gave him a tight embrace.
    4.5.13-14 ததோ ஹநூமாந்ஸந்த்யஜ்ய
    பிக்ஷுரூபமரிந்தம: ।
    காஷ்டயோஸ்ஸ்வேந ரூபேண
    ஜநயாமாஸ பாவகம் ।
    தீப்யமாநம் ததோ வஹ்நிம்
    புஷ்பைரப்யர்ச்ய ஸத்க்ருதம் ।
    தயோர்மத்யேऽத ஸுப்ரீதோ
    நிததே ஸுஸமாஹித: ।
    tatō hanūmānsantyajya
    bhikṣurūpamarindamaḥ ।
    kāṣṭhayōssvēna rūpēṇa
    janayāmāsa pāvakam ।
    dīpyamānaṃ tatō vahniṃ
    puṣpairabhyarcya satkṛtam ।
    tayōrmadhyē'tha suprītō
    nidadhē susamāhitaḥ ।
    Then Hanumān the subduer of enemies,
    discarded his mendicant guise and
    and assumed his original form.
    He created fire using fire-sticks.
    He worshipped the well-lit fire with flowers.
    Then, pleased and with sincere attention,
    he placed the fire between them. The text of Rāmāyaṇa has a few minor inconsistencies starting from the fifty seventh Sarga of Araṇya Kāṇḍa, wherein Rāma turns back to his Āṡrama, after killing Māreeca.
    These inconsistencies must be the result of the struggle of modern compilers of Rāmāyaṇa in reconciling differences among the various palm-leaf manuscripts from various regions of India.
    We see one such minor inconsistency here. Hanumān gave up his mendicant form already (Ṡlōka 4.4.34). But the same thing is seen here again.
    4.5.15 ததோऽக்நிம் தீப்யமாநம் தௌ
    சக்ரதுஸ்ச ப்ரதக்ஷிணம் ।
    ஸுக்ரீவோ ராகவஸ்சைவ
    வயஸ்யத்வமுபாகதௌ ॥
    tatō'gniṃ dīpyamānaṃ tau
    cakratuṡca pradakṣiṇam ।
    sugrīvō rāghavaṡcaiva
    vayasyatvamupāgatau ॥
    Then the two, Sugreeva and Rāghava,
    went around the bright fire,
    entering into a friendly alliance.
