Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 9
In this Sarga, Sugreeva begins to tell his story of how he used to love and serve his brother Vāli obediently after Vāli became the king following their father's demise, how his brother had a rift with an Asura called Māyāvi over a woman, how Māyāvi challenged Vāli to a fight, but fled into a cave when chased by Vali and Sugreeva, how Vāli entered the cave to kill the Asura, asking Sugreeva to wait at the mouth of the cave, how Vāli did not come out of the cave even after a year passed, how there was not even a sound from him, how blood with froth came out of the cave, how Sugreeva returned to Kishkindhā after giving water ablutions to his brother, how the ministers consecrated him on to the throne, how Vāli returned killing the Asura, how he was outraged seeing Sugreeva consecrated, how he put the ministers in chains and would not relent even when Sugreeva prostrated to Vāli, touching his feet with his crown.
4.9.1 வாலீ நாம மம ப்ராதா
ஜ்யேஷ்டஸ்ஸத்ருநிஷூதந: ।
பிதுர்பஹுமதோ நித்யம்
மமாபி ச ததா புரா ॥
vālī nāma mama bhrātā
jyēṣṭhaṡṡatruniṣūdanaḥ ।
piturbahumatō nityam
mamāpi ca tathā purā ॥
My brother, by name Vāli, is an annihilator of the foe.
He was very dear to my father, always.
And in those days, I used to like him too.
4.9.2 பிதர்யுபரதேऽஸ்மாகம்
ஜ்யேஷ்டோऽயமிதி மந்த்ரிபி: ।
கபீநாமீஸ்வரோ ராஜ்யே
க்ருத: பரமஸம்மத: ॥
pitaryuparatē'smākam
jyēṣṭhō'yamiti mantribhiḥ ।
kapīnāmīṡvarō rājyē
kṛtaḥ paramasammataḥ ॥
After the death of our father,
the ministers established him, the elder one,
who enjoyed the esteem of all
in the kingdom, as the lord of Vānaras.
4.9.3 ராஜ்யம் ப்ரஸாஸதஸ்தஸ்ய
பித்ருபைதாமஹம் மஹத் ।
அஹம் ஸர்வேஷு காலேஷு
ப்ரணத: ப்ரேஷ்யவத் ஸ்தித: ॥
rājyaṃ praṡāsatastasya
pitṛpaitāmahaṃ mahat ।
ahaṃ sarvēṣu kālēṣu
praṇataḥ prēṣyavat sthitaḥ ॥
While he ruled the great kingdom that
had been handed down from father to son,
I served him obediently all the time.
4.9.4 மாயாவீ நாம தேஜஸ்வீ
பூர்வஜோ துந்துபே: ஸுத: ।
தேந தஸ்ய மஹத்வைரம்
ஸ்த்ரீக்ருதம் விஸ்ஸ்ருதம் புரா ॥
māyāvī nāma tējasvī
pūrvajō dundubhēḥ sutaḥ ।
tēna tasya mahadvairam
strīkṛtaṃ viṡṡrutaṃ purā ॥
Māyāvi, the eldest son of Dundhubhi,
had a great enmity with him,
caused by the quarrel over a woman,
that was well known.
4.9.5 ஸ து ஸுப்தஜநே ராத்ரௌ
கிஷ்கிந்தாத்வாரமாகத: ।
நர்ததி ஸ்ம ஸுஸம்ரப்தோ
வாலிநம் சாஹ்வயத்ரணே ॥
sa tu suptajanē rātrau
kiṣkindhādvāramāgataḥ ।
nardati sma susaṃrabdhō
vālinaṃ cāhvayadraṇē ॥
He once came to the gates of Kishkindhā
at the dead of night when all were asleep,
raising a mighty roar and
challenging Vāli to fight with him.
4.9.6 ப்ரஸுப்தஸ்து மம ப்ராதா
நர்ததோ பைரவஸ்வநம் ।
ஸ்ருத்வா ந மம்ருஷே வாலீ
நிஷ்பபாத ஜவாத்ததா ॥
prasuptastu mama bhrātā
nardatō bhairavasvanam ।
ṡrutvā na mamṛṣē vālī
niṣpapāta javāttadā ॥
My brother Vāli, who was sound asleep,
became very impatient hearing his
dreadful yell, and came out swiftly.
4.9.7 ஸ து வை நிஸ்ஸ்ருத: க்ரோதாத்
தம் ஹந்துமஸுரோத்தமம் ।
வார்யமாணஸ்தத ஸ்த்ரீபி:
மயா ச ப்ரணதாத்மநா ॥
sa tu vai nissṛtaḥ krōdhāt
taṃ hantumasurōttamam ।
vāryamāṇastata strībhiḥ
mayā ca praṇatātmanā ॥
And in his wrath, he went forth
to kill that best among the Asuras,
even though all the women tried to dissuade him
and I too did the same, in all obedience.
4.9.8 ஸ து நிர்தூய தா: ஸர்வா
நிர்ஜகாம மஹாபல: ।
ததோऽஹமபி ஸௌஹார்தாத்
நிஸ்ஸ்ருதோ வாலிநா ஸஹ ॥
sa tu nirdhūya tāḥ sarvā
nirjagāma mahābalaḥ ।
tatō'hamapi sauhārdāt
nissṛtō vālinā saha ॥
But, he, of immense strength,
ignored all of them and went ahead.
Then, out of love, I also went out along with Vāli.
4.9.9 ஸ து மே ப்ராதரம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
மாம் ச தூராதவஸ்திதம் ।
அஸுரோ ஜாதஸந்த்ராஸ:
ப்ரதுத்ராவ ததோ ப்ருஸம் ॥
sa tu mē bhrātaraṃ dṛṣṭvā
māṃ ca dūrādavasthitam ।
asurō jātasantrāsaḥ
pradudrāva tatō bhṛṡam ॥
He, the Asura, on seeing
my brother and me from afar,
fled away in great terror.
4.9.10 தஸ்மிந் த்ரவதி ஸந்த்ரஸ்தே
ஹ்யாவாம் த்ருததரம் கதௌ ।
ப்ரகாஸஸ்ச க்ருதோ மார்க:
சந்த்ரேணோத்கச்சதா ததா ॥
tasmin dravati santrastē
hyāvāṃ drutataraṃ gatau ।
prakāṡaṡca kṛtō mārgaḥ
candrēṇōdgacchatā tadā ॥
As he fled in terror,
we both rushed to chase him,
while the path was lit by the rising moon.
4.9.11 ஸ த்ருணைராவ்ருதம் துர்கம்
தரண்யா விவரம் மஹத் ।
ப்ரவிவேஸாஸுரோ வேகாத்
ஆவாமாஸாத்ய விஷ்டிதௌ ॥
sa tṛṇairāvṛtaṃ durgam
dharaṇyā vivaraṃ mahat ।
pravivēṡāsurō vēgāt
āvāmāsādya viṣṭhitau ॥
Then the Asura entered a cave,
a huge one on this earth,
covered with grass and impassable.
Moving with all swiftness,
we found ourselves at the mouth of the cave.
4.9.12 தம் ப்ரவிஷ்டம் ரிபும் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
பிலம் ரோஷவஸம் கத: ।
மாமுவாச ததா வாலீ
வசநம் க்ஷுபிதேந்த்ரிய: ॥
taṃ praviṣṭaṃ ripuṃ dṛṣṭvā
bilaṃ rōṣavaṡaṃ gataḥ ।
māmuvāca tadā vālī
vacanaṃ kṣubhitēndriyaḥ ॥
Seeing the enemy enter the cave, Vāli was in a rage.
All his senses in turmoil, he said these words to me:
4.9.13 இஹ த்வம் திஷ்ட ஸுக்ரீவ
பிலத்வாரி ஸமாஹித: ।
யாவத்தத்ர ப்ரவிஸ்யாஹம்
நிஹந்மி ஸஹஸா ரிபும் ॥
iha tvaṃ tiṣṭha sugrīva
biladvāri samāhitaḥ ।
yāvattatra praviṡyāham
nihanmi sahasā ripum ॥
O Sugreeva! Wait here vigilantly,
at the entrance of the cave,
while I go in and kill the enemy, in no time.
4.9.14 மயா த்வேதத்வசஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா
யாசிதஸ்ஸ பரந்தப: ।
ஸாபயித்வா து மாம் பத்ப்யாம்
ப்ரவிவேஸ பிலம் மஹத் ॥
mayā tvētadvacaṡṡrutvā
yācitassa parantapaḥ ।
ṡāpayitvā tu māṃ padbhyām
pravivēṡa bilaṃ mahat ॥
I begged him hard to allow me to follow him,
but he, scorcher of the foe, forbade me,
and sealing his refusal by
making me take an oath on his feet,
entered that huge cave.
4.9.15 தஸ்ய ப்ரவிஷ்டஸ்ய பிலம்
ஸாக்ரஸ்ஸம்வத்ஸரோ கத: ।
ஸ்திதஸ்ய ச பிலத்வாரி
ஸ காலோ வ்யத்யவர்தத ॥
tasya praviṣṭasya bilam
sāgrassaṃvatsarō gataḥ ।
sthitasya ca biladvāri
sa kālō vyatyavartata ॥
Then, over a year passed by
for him who entered the cave,
and the same time passed for me
while waiting at the entrance.
4.9.16 அஹம் து நஷ்டம் ஜ்ஞாத்வா தம்
ஸ்நேஹாதாகதஸம்ப்ரம: ।
ப்ராதரம் ந ச பஸ்யாமி
பாபாஸங்கி ச மே மந: ॥
ahaṃ tu naṣṭaṃ jñātvā tam
snēhādāgatasambhramaḥ ।
bhrātaraṃ na ca paṡyāmi
pāpāṡaṅki ca mē manaḥ ॥
With my brother not to be seen,
the sense of loss taking over me
and my mind suspecting the worst,
my affection (for him) made me agitated.
4.9.17 அத தீர்கஸ்ய காலஸ்ய
பிலாத்தஸ்மாத்விநிஸ்ஸ்ருதம் ।
ஸபேநம் ருதிரம் ரக்தம்
அஹம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸுது:கித: ॥
atha dīrghasya kālasya
bilāttasmādvinissṛtam ।
saphēnaṃ rudhiraṃ raktam
ahaṃ dṛṣṭvā suduḥkhitaḥ ॥
When, after a long time, I found
blood with froth issuing from the cave,
I was grief-stricken.
4.9.18 நர்ததாமஸுராணாம் ச
த்வநிர்மே ஸ்ரோத்ரமாகத: ।
ந ரதஸ்ய ச ஸங்க்ராமே
க்ரோஸதோऽபி ஸ்வநோ குரோ: ॥
nardatāmasurāṇāṃ ca
dhvanirmē ṡrōtramāgataḥ ।
na ratasya ca saṅgrāmē
krōṡatō'pi svanō gurōḥ ॥
I heard the noise made by the shouting Asuras,
but not the sound of war-whoops of
my elder brother involved in fight.
4.9.19-20a அஹம் த்வவகதோ புத்த்யா
சிஹ்நைஸ்தைர்ப்ராதரம் ஹதம் ।
பிதாய ச பிலத்வாரம்
ஸிலயா கிரிமாத்ரயா ।
ஸோகார்தஸ்சோதகம் க்ருத்வா
கிஷ்கிந்தாமாகதஸ்ஸகே ॥
ahaṃ tvavagatō buddhyā
cihnaistairbhrātaraṃ hatam ।
pidhāya ca biladvāram
ṡilayā girimātrayā ।
ṡōkārtaṡcōdakaṃ kṛtvā
kiṣkindhāmāgatassakhē ॥
My friend! From the signs,
I concluded that my brother was slain.
I blocked the entrance to the cave
with a boulder as big as a hill,
and returned to Kishkindhā, distraught with grief,
after offering water libations.
4.9.20b-21a கூஹமாநஸ்ய மே தத்த்வம்
யத்நதோ மந்த்ரிபிஸ்ஸ்ருதம் ।
ததோऽஹம் தைஸ்ஸமாகம்ய
ஸம்மதைரபிஷேசித: ।
gūhamānasya mē tattvam
yatnatō mantribhiṡṡrutam ।
tatō'haṃ taissamāgamya
sammatairabhiṣēcitaḥ ।
Though I tried my best to keep it secret,
the ministers came to know (that Vāli was dead).
Then all of them coming together,
consecrated me on the throne.
4.9.21b-22a ராஜ்யம் ப்ரஸாஸதஸ்தஸ்ய
ந்யாயதோ மம ராகவ ।
ஆஜகாம ரிபும் ஹத்வா
வாலீ தமஸுரோத்தமம் ॥
rājyaṃ praṡāsatastasya
nyāyatō mama rāghava ।
ājagāma ripuṃ hatvā
vālī tamasurōttamam ॥
As I was ruling the realm justly,
Vāli returned, having slain his foe, the great Asura.
4.9.22b-23 ஹத்வா ஸத்ரும் ஸ மே ப்ராதா
ப்ரவிவேஸ புரம் ததா ॥
மாநயம்ஸ்தம் மஹாத்மாநம்
யதாவச்சாப்யவாதயம் ।
உக்தாஸ்ச நாஸிஷஸ்தேந
ஸந்துஷ்டேநாந்தராத்மநா ॥
hatvā ṡatruṃ sa mē bhrātā
pravivēṡa puraṃ tadā ॥
mānayaṃstaṃ mahātmānam
yathāvaccābhyavādayam ।
uktāṡca nāṡiṣastēna
santuṣṭēnāntarātmanā ॥
I honored that Mahātma, my brother,
and offered my salutations in a customary manner
after he thus entered the city after slaying the enemy.
He was neither pleased with it in his heart
nor did he utter a single word of blessing.
4.9.24 அபிஷிக்தம் து மாம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
வாலீ ஸம்ரக்தலோசந: ।
மதீயாந்மந்த்ரிணோ பத்த்வா
பருஷம் வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
abhiṣiktaṃ tu māṃ dṛṣṭvā
vālī saṃraktalōcanaḥ ।
madīyānmantriṇō baddhvā
paruṣaṃ vākyamabravīt ॥
Rather, seeing me consecrated,
his eyes turned red-blood as he was outraged.
He put my ministers in chains and spoke harshly.
4.9.25 நிக்ரஹேऽபி ஸமர்தஸ்ய
தம் பாபம் ப்ரதி ராகவ ।
ந ப்ராவர்தத மே புத்தி:
ப்ராதுர்கௌரவயந்த்ரிதா ॥
nigrahē'pi samarthasya
taṃ pāpaṃ prati rāghava ।
na prāvartata mē buddhiḥ
bhrāturgauravayantritā ॥
O Rāghava! Though I was fully capable of
restraining him from that aggression,
my mind did not proceed on those lines,
refrained by the respect for an elder brother.
4.9.26 நத்வா பாதாவஹம் தஸ்ய
மகுடேநாஸ்ப்ருஸம் ப்ரபோ
அபி வாலீ மம க்ரோதாத்
ந ப்ரஸாதம் சகார ஸ: ॥
natvā pādāvahaṃ tasya
makuṭēnāspṛṡaṃ prabhō
api vālī mama krōdhāt
na prasādaṃ cakāra saḥ ॥
O Lord! I then prostrated and
touched his feet with my crown.
Even then, being angry with me,
he, Vāli, would not bestow his grace on me.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே நவமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē navamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the ninth Sarga
in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
