Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 10
In this Sarga, Sugreeva continues to tell Rāma the story of his enmity with Vāli. He tells how he tried to placate his brother and pleaded with him, gave back his kingdom, how Vāli disregarded his pleas, summoned all the ministers and citizens, and how in their midst accused Sugreeva of locking him up in the cave, how Vāli scorned and expelled him, how he took his wife away and how he settled on Ṛshyamūka after fleeing all around the earth in fear.
Rāma empathizes with Sugreeva saying that he could understand Sugreeva's plight as he was also in a similar one. He assures Sugreeva that Vāli would live only until he sets his eyes on him.
4.10.1 தத: க்ரோதஸமாவிஷ்டம்
ஸம்ரப்தம் தமுபாகதம் ।
அஹம் ப்ரஸாதயாஞ்சக்ரே
ப்ராதரம் ப்ரியகாம்யயா ॥
tataḥ krōdhasamāviṣṭam
samrabdhaṃ tamupāgatam ।
ahaṃ prasādayāñcakrē
bhrātaraṃ priyakāmyayā ॥
I sought to placate my brother
who came with a such tempestuous rage,
for the good of everyone:
4.10.2 திஷ்ட்யாஸி குஸலீ ப்ராப்தோ
நிஹதஸ்ச த்வயா ரிபு: ।
அநாதஸ்ய ஹி மே நாத:
த்வமேகோऽநாதநந்தந: ॥
diṣṭyāsi kuṡalī prāptō
nihataṡca tvayā ripuḥ ।
anāthasya hi mē nāthaḥ
tvamēkō'nāthanandanaḥ ॥
By good fortune, you have returned safe slaying your enemy.
You, because of whom the hearts of the defenseless rejoice,
are my sole refuge and I have no one else.
4.10.3 இதம் பஹுஸலாகம் தே
பூர்ணசந்த்ரமிவோதிதம் ।
சத்ரம் ஸவாலவ்யஜநம்
ப்ரதீச்சஸ்வ மயா த்ருதம் ॥
idaṃ bahuṡalākaṃ tē
pūrṇacandramivōditam ।
chatraṃ savālavyajanam
pratīcchasva mayā dhṛtam ॥
Please accept this many-ribbed umbrella
that is (splendid) like the moon risen (above the horizon),
held by me along with the fly-whisks
made from the tail of the animal Camari.
4.10.4 ஆர்தஸ்சாத பிலத்வாரி
ஸ்திதஸ்ஸம்வத்ஸரம் ந்ருப ।
த்ருஷ்ட்வாऽஹம் ஸோணிதம் த்வாரி
பிலாச்சாபி ஸமுத்திதம் ॥
ārtaṡcātha biladvāri
sthitassaṃvatsaraṃ nṛpa ।
dṛṣṭvā'haṃ ṡōṇitaṃ dvāri
bilāccāpi samutthitam ॥
O King! I waited for a whole year
helplessly at the entrance of the cave.
Then I saw blood issuing from the mouth of the cave.
4.10.5-6a ஸோகஸம்விக்நஹ்ருதயோ
ப்ருஸம் வ்யாகுலிதேந்த்ரிய: ।
அபிதாய பிலத்வாரம்
ஸைலஸ்ருங்கேண தத்ததா ॥
தஸ்மாத்தேஸாதபாக்ரம்ய
கிஷ்கிந்தாம் ப்ராவிஸம் புந: ।
ṡōkasaṃvignahṛdayō
bhṛṡaṃ vyākulitēndriyaḥ ।
apidhāya biladvāram
ṡailaṡṛṅgēṇa tattathā ॥
tasmāddēṡādapākramya
kiṣkindhāṃ prāviṡaṃ punaḥ ।
My heart rent with grief and
my senses thrown in a turmoil,
I shut the entrance to the cave
with a mountain crest and left,
and returned to Kishkindhā.
4.10.6b-7a விஷாதாத்விஹ மாம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
பௌரைர்மந்த்ரிபிரேவ ச ॥
அபிஷிக்தோ ந காமேந
தந்மேத்வம் க்ஷந்துமர்ஹஸி ।
viṣādātviha māṃ dṛṣṭvā
paurairmantribhirēva ca ॥
abhiṣiktō na kāmēna
tanmētvaṃ kṣantumarhasi ।
The citizens and ministers,
seeing me return grief-stricken,
crowned me, though I had no desire for it.
May you please forgive me!
4.10.7b-8 த்வமேவ ராஜா மாநார்ஹ:
ஸதா சாஹம் யதா புரம் ॥
ராஜபாவே நியுக்தோऽஹம்
மம த்வத்விரஹாத்க்ருத: ।
ஸாமாத்யபௌரநகரம்
ஸ்திதம் நிஹதகண்டகம் ॥
tvamēva rājā mānārhaḥ
sadā cāhaṃ yathā puram ॥
rājabhāvē niyuktō'ham
mama tvadvirahātkṛtaḥ ।
sāmātyapauranagaram
sthitaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam ॥
You, the honorable, are the king
always, as you were before.
I played the role of king
because you were not there.
The kingdom, with all the
ministers, citizens and cities
is intact, free of troubles.
4.10.9 ந்யாஸபூதமிதம் ராஜ்யம்
தவ நிர்யாதயாம்யஹம் ।
மா ச ரோஷம் க்ருதாஸ்ஸௌம்ய
மயி ஸத்ரு நிஷூதந ॥
nyāsabhūtamidaṃ rājyam
tava niryātayāmyaham ।
mā ca rōṣaṃ kṛthāssaumya
mayi ṡatru niṣūdana ॥
O destroyer of enemies!
I give this kingdom back to you
which I have been holding in trust.
O gentle one! Please do not be angry with me!
4.10.10-11a யாசே த்வாம் ஸிரஸா ராஜந்
மயா பத்தோऽயமஞ்ஜலி: ।
பலாதஸ்மிந் ஸமாகம்ய
மந்த்ரிபி: புரவாஸிபி: ॥
ராஜபாவே நியுக்தோऽஹம்
ஸூந்யதேஸஜிகீஷயா ।
yācē tvāṃ ṡirasā rājan
mayā baddhō'yamañjaliḥ ।
balādasmin samāgamya
mantribhiḥ puravāsibhiḥ ॥
rājabhāvē niyuktō'ham
ṡūnyadēṡajigīṣayā ।
O King! I beg you bowing my head
and with these palms of mine joined.
It was the ministers and the people of the city
that came together and compelled me to accept the kingship,
from the fear of leaving the country headless.
4.10.11b-12a ஸ்நிக்தமேவம் ப்ருவாணம் மாம்
ஸ து நிர்பர்த்ஸ்ய வாநர: ॥
திக்த்வாமிதி ச மாமுக்த்வா
பஹு தத்ததுவாச ஹ ।
snigdhamēvaṃ bruvāṇaṃ mām
sa tu nirbhartsya vānaraḥ ॥
dhiktvāmiti ca māmuktvā
bahu tattaduvāca ha ।
I thus spoke with love,
but the Vānara browbeat me,
yelling, ‘Dhik, you!’, repeatedly.
4.10.12b-13a ப்ரக்ருதீஸ்ச ஸமாநீய
முந்த்ரிணஸ்சைவ ஸம்மதாந் ॥
மாமாஹ ஸுஹ்ருதாம் மத்யே
வாக்யம் பரமகர்ஹிதம் ।
prakṛtīṡca samānīya
muntriṇaṡcaiva sammatān ॥
māmāha suhṛdāṃ madhyē
vākyaṃ paramagarhitam ।
Then summoning all the honorable ministers
and all the people (of the kingdom),
he spoke extremely scornfully to me,
in the midst of all my friends.
4.10.13b-14a விதிதம் வோ யதா ராத்ரௌ
மாயாவீ ஸ மஹாஸுர: ॥
மாம் ஸமாஹ்வயத க்ரூரோ
யுத்தாகாங்க்ஷீ ஸுதுர்மதி: ।
viditaṃ vō yathā rātrau
māyāvī sa mahāsuraḥ ॥
māṃ samāhvayata krūrō
yuddhākāṅkṣī sudurmatiḥ ।
All of you know that Māyāvi, the great Asura,
the cruel and evil one,
had called me in the night for a fight.
4.10.14b-15a தஸ்ய தத்பாஷிதம் ஸ்ருத்வா
நிஸ்ஸ்ருதோऽஹம் ந்ருபாலயாத் ।
அநுயாதஸ்ச மாம் தூர்ணம்
அயம் ப்ராதா ஸுதாருண: ॥
tasya tadbhāṣitam ṡrutvā
nissṛtō'haṃ nṛpālayāt ।
anuyātaṡca māṃ tūrṇam
ayaṃ bhrātā sudāruṇaḥ ॥
Hearing that call from him,
I came out of the royal palace.
This utterly wicked brother of mine
followed me immediately.
4.10.15b-16 ஸ து த்ருஷ்ட்வைவ மாம் ராத்ரௌ
ஸத்விதீயம் மஹாபல: ॥
ப்ராத்ரவத்பயஸந்த்ரஸ்தோ
வீக்ஷ்யாவாம் ஸமுபாகதௌ ।
அநுத்ருதஸ்ச வேகேந
ப்ரவிவேஸ மஹாபிலம் ॥
sa tu dṛṣṭvaiva māṃ rātrau
sadvitīyaṃ mahābalaḥ ॥
prādravadbhayasantrastō
vīkṣyāvāṃ samupāgatau ।
anudrutaṡca vēgēna
pravivēṡa mahābilam ॥
Seeing me accompanied by one more,
he, though of immense strength,
fled in fear that night.
Seeing us coming at him together,
he sped fast and entered a huge cave.
4.10.17 தம் ப்ரவிஷ்டம் விதித்வா து
ஸுகோரம் ஸுமஹத்பிலம் ।
அயமுக்தோऽத மே ப்ராதா
மயா து க்ரூரதர்ஸந: ॥
taṃ praviṣṭaṃ viditvā tu
sughōraṃ sumahadbilam ।
ayamuktō'tha mē bhrātā
mayā tu krūradarṡanaḥ ॥
When I knew that he had entered
a huge and dreadful cave,
I told this brother of mine,
who (apparently) harbored wicked plans:
4.10.18 அஹத்வா நாஸ்தி மே ஸக்தி:
ப்ரதிகந்துமித: புரீம் ।
பிலத்வாரி ப்ரதீக்ஷ த்வம்
யாவதேநம் நிஹந்ம்யஹம் ॥
ahatvā nāsti mē ṡaktiḥ
pratigantumitaḥ purīm ।
biladvāri pratīkṣa tvam
yāvadēnaṃ nihanmyaham ॥
I cannot go back to the city
from here without killing (him).
Wait at this entrance of the cave
while I go and I kill (him).
4.10.19 ஸ்திதோऽயமிதி மத்வா து
ப்ரவிஷ்டோऽஹம் துராஸதம் ।
தம் ச மே மார்கமாணஸ்ய
கதஸ்ஸம்வத்ஸரஸ்ததா ॥
sthitō'yamiti matvā tu
praviṣṭō'haṃ durāsadam ।
taṃ ca mē mārgamāṇasya
gatassaṃvatsarastadā ॥
Assuming that he would wait there
I entered that formidable cave.
Then a year passed by while I searched for him.
4.10.20 ஸ து த்ருஷ்டோ மயா ஸத்ரு:
அநிர்வேதாத்பயாவஹ: ।
நிஹதஸ்ச மயா ஸத்ய:
ஸ ஸர்வை: ஸஹ பந்துபி: ॥
sa tu dṛṣṭō mayā ṡatruḥ
anirvēdādbhayāvahaḥ ।
nihataṡca mayā sadyaḥ
sa sarvaiḥ saha bandhubhiḥ ॥
Finally, I cast my merciless eye
on that enemy who was then gripped by fear.
In no time, he and all his
relations were killed by me.
4.10.21 தஸ்யாஸ்யாத்து ப்ரவ்ருத்தேந
ருதிரௌகேண தத்பிலம் ।
பூர்ணமாஸீத்துராக்ராமம்
ஸ்வநத: தஸ்ய பூதலே ॥
tasyāsyāttu pravṛttēna
rudhiraughēṇa tadbilam ।
pūrṇamāsīddurākrāmam
svanataḥ tasya bhūtalē ॥
While he fell on the ground crying,
the blood that welled from his mouth
filled the cave, leaving no room to walk around.
