Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 12
In this Sarga, Rāma demonstrates his strength by shooting an arrow with all his strength. The arrow shatters the seven Sāla trees, the mountain side, and the nether world before it returns to the quiver.
Astounded by that feat, Sugreeva immediately falls at the feet of Rāma and beseeches him to kill Vāli right away. Sugreeva, Rāma and all the Vānaras go immediately to Kishkindhā. Sugreeva challenges Vāli to fight, with a roar. A great fight ensues between them.
Rāma, who means to shoot an arrow, refrains from it, as he is unable to tell one from the other between Vāli and Sugreeva as they both look so much alike.
Beaten up, Sugreeva retreats and flees back to Ṛshyamūka. Vāli, who pursues him, stops short of entering that Vana because of the fear of the curse.
Sugreeva, feeling disgraced, asks Rāma why he had let him down. Rāma explains what happened and asks him to wear an identifying mark so that he can recognize who is who. Rāma asks him to go again to Kishkindhā and fight.
4.12.1 ஏதச்ச வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா
ஸுக்ரீவேண ஸுபாஷிதம் ।
ப்ரத்யயார்தம் மஹாதேஜா
ராமோ ஜக்ராஹ கார்முகம் ॥
ētacca vacanaṃ ṡrutvā
sugrīvēṇa subhāṣitam ।
pratyayārthaṃ mahātējā
rāmō jagrāha kārmukam ॥
Hearing those well spoken words of Sugreeva,
Rāma of immense strength, took up the bow
to instill confidence in him.
4.12.2 ஸ க்ருஹீத்வா தநுர்கோரம்
ஸரமேகம் ச மாநத: ।
ஸாலமுத்திஸ்ய சிக்ஷேப
ஜ்யாஸ்வநை: பூரயந்திஸ: ॥
sa gṛhītvā dhanurghōram
ṡaramēkaṃ ca mānadaḥ ।
sālamuddiṡya cikṣēpa
jyāsvanaiḥ pūrayandiṡaḥ ॥
He who upheld everyone’s dignity,
took that terrifying bow and
shot a single arrow towards the Sāla trees,
with the twang of the bowstring
reverberating in all directions.
4.12.3 ஸ விஸ்ருஷ்டோ பலவதா
பாணஸ்ஸ்வர்ணபரிஷ்க்ருத: ।
பித்த்வா ஸாலாந் கிரிப்ரஸ்தம்
ஸப்த பூமிம் விவேஸ ஹ ॥
sa visṛṣṭō balavatā
bāṇassvarṇapariṣkṛtaḥ ।
bhittvā sālān giriprastham
sapta bhūmiṃ vivēṡa ha ॥
Shot with all his strength,
the arrow that was decked with gold
shattered all the Sāla trees and
then the sides of mountain,
before it pierced into the ground.
4.12.4 ப்ரவிஷ்டஸ்து முஹூர்தேந
ரஸாம் பித்த்வா மஹாஜவ: ।
நிஷ்பத்ய ச புநஸ்தூர்ணம்
ஸ்வதூணீம் ப்ரவிவேஸ ஹ ॥
praviṣṭastu muhūrtēna
rasāṃ bhittvā mahājavaḥ ।
niṣpatya ca punastūrṇam
svatūṇīṃ pravivēṡa ha ॥
In a Muhūrta after it entered the earth,
that extremely swift (arrow)
shattered the nether world Rasa,
and came out and entered
its own quiver as quickly.
4.12.5 தாந்த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸப்த நிர்பிந்நாத்
ஸாலாந்வாநரபுங்கவ: ।
ராமஸ்ய ஸரவேகேந
விஸ்மயம் பரமம் கத: ॥
tāndṛṣṭvā sapta nirbhinnāt
sālānvānarapuṅgavaḥ ।
rāmasya ṡaravēgēna
vismayaṃ paramaṃ gataḥ ॥
Seeing those seven Sāla trees shattered
by the speed of Rāma’s arrow,
that bull among Vānaras was astounded, awestruck.
4.12.6 ஸ மூர்த்நா ந்யபததப்மௌ
ப்ரலம்பீக்ருதபூஷண: ।
ஸுக்ரீவ: பரமப்ரீதோ
ராகவாய க்ருதாஞ்ஜலி: ॥
sa mūrdhnā nyapatadabhmau
pralambīkṛtabhūṣaṇaḥ ।
sugrīvaḥ paramaprītō
rāghavāya kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥
Sugreeva, overwhelmed with joy,
joined his palms in reverence and
fell on the ground with his head
touching the feet of Rāghava,
all his ornaments hanging down.
4.12.7 இதம் சோவாச தர்மஜ்ஞம்
கர்மணா தேந ஹர்ஷித: ।
ராமம் ஸர்வாஸ்த்ரவிதுஷாம்
ஸ்ரேஷ்டம் ஸூரமவஸ்திதம் ॥
idaṃ cōvāca dharmajñam
karmaṇā tēna harṣitaḥ ।
rāmaṃ sarvāstraviduṣām
ṡrēṣṭhaṃ ṡūramavasthitam ॥
Sugreeva, who was happy with that deed,
said these words to Rāma, the best, the valorous one,
the Dharmajña, the expert of all Astras, who stood there:
4.12.8 ஸேந்த்ராநபி ஸுராந்ஸர்வாந்
த்வம் பாணை: புருஷர்ஷப ।
ஸமர்தஸ்ஸமரே ஹந்தும்
கிம் புந ர்வாலிநம் ப்ரபோ ॥
sēndrānapi surānsarvān
tvaṃ bāṇaiḥ puruṣarṣabha ।
samarthassamarē hantum
kiṃ puna rvālinaṃ prabhō ॥
O bull among men! You can destroy with your arrow,
all the Suras and even Indra in a fight!
O Lord! What to say of Vāli!
4.12.9 யேந ஸப்தமஹாஸாலா
கிரிர்பூமிஸ்ச தாரிதா: ।
பாணேநைகேந காகுத்ஸ்த
ஸ்தாதா தே கோ ரணாக்ரத: ॥
yēna saptamahāsālā
girirbhūmiṡca dāritāḥ ।
bāṇēnaikēna kākutstha
sthātā tē kō raṇāgrataḥ ॥
O Kākutstha! Who can lead a fight standing against you,
who shattered seven huge Sāla trees,
a mountain and even the earth, with one single arrow?
4.12.10 அத்ய மே விகதஸ்ஸோக:
ப்ரீதிரத்ய பரா மம ।
ஸுஹ்ருதம் த்வாம் ஸமாஸாத்ய
மஹேந்த்ரவருணோபமம் ॥
adya mē vigataṡṡōkaḥ
prītiradya parā mama ।
suhṛdaṃ tvāṃ samāsādya
mahēndravaruṇōpamam ॥
Today, I am freed from all my sorrows.
I am extremely happy having you,
comparable to Indra and Varuṇa, for a friend now.
4.12.11 தமத்யைவ ப்ரியார்தம் மே
வைரிணம் ப்ராத்ருரூபிணம் ।
வாலிநம் ஜஹி காகுத்ஸ்த
மயா பத்தோऽயமஞ்ஜலி: ॥
tamadyaiva priyārthaṃ mē
vairiṇaṃ bhrātṛrūpiṇam ।
vālinaṃ jahi kākutstha
mayā baddhō'yamañjaliḥ ॥
O Kākutstha! I beseech you with my palms joined!
Kill Vāli, who is an enemy in the guise of a brother,
right now and make me happy.
4.12.12 ததோ ராம: பரிஷ்வஜ்ய
ஸுக்ரீவம் ப்ரியதர்ஸநம் ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞோ
லக்ஷ்மணாநுகதம் வச: ॥
tatō rāmaḥ pariṣvajya
sugrīvaṃ priyadarṡanam ।
pratyuvāca mahāprājñō
lakṣmaṇānugataṃ vacaḥ ॥
Then, the extraordinarily confident Rāma
hugged Sugreeva, who looked elated,
just as he would to Lakshmaṇa,
and responded with these words:
4.12.13 அஸ்மாத்கச்சேம கிஷ்கிந்தாம்
க்ஷிப்ரம் கச்ச த்வமக்ரத: ।
கத்வா சாஹ்வய ஸுக்ரீவ
வாலிநம் ப்ராத்ருகந்திநம் ॥
asmādgacchēma kiṣkindhām
kṣipraṃ gaccha tvamagrataḥ ।
gatvā cāhvaya sugrīva
vālinaṃ bhrātṛgandhinam ॥
O Sugreeva! Let us go from here
quickly to Kishkindhā. You lead the way!
After going there, O Sugreeva,
invite Vāli, a brother only in name, for a fight! Rāma says of Vāli, ‘a brother only in name’ here, with rightful derision. The way Rāma treated his brothers was entirely different from the way Vāli treated his brother Sugreeva.
Rāma did not speak low of Bharata even when everyone was suspicious of his having had a hand in dislodging Rāma, whereas Vāli suspected Sugreeva even when he pleaded not guilty and explained what had really happened.
Rāma did not take the kingdom back even when Bharata offered. Vāli not only took back the kingdom that was handed over by his brother, but also drove him away and took his wife.
This is the justifiable moral high ground Rāma had in taking the life of Vāli.
4.12.14 ஸர்வே தே த்வரிதம் கத்வா
கிஷ்கிந்தாம் வாலிந: புரீம் ।
வ்ருக்ஷைராத்மாநமாவ்ருத்ய
வ்யதிஷ்டந்கஹநே வநே ॥
sarvē tē tvaritaṃ gatvā
kiṣkindhāṃ vālinaḥ purīm ।
vṛkṣairātmānamāvṛtya
vyatiṣṭhangahanē vanē ॥
Then all of them went swiftly
to Kishkindhā, the city of Vāli.
They took position in the dense Vana
with trees for cover.
4.12.15 ஸுக்ரீவோ வ்யநதத்கோரம்
வாலிநோऽऽஹ்வாநகாரணாத் ।
காடம் பரிஹிதோ வேகாத்
நாதைர்பிந்தந்நிவாம்பரம் ॥
sugrīvō vyanadadghōram
vālinō''hvānakāraṇāt ।
gāḍhaṃ parihitō vēgāt
nādairbhindannivāmbaram ॥
And Sugreeva, tightening his clothes about him,
let off a dreadful shout challenging Vāli to a fight,
as if he would shatter the sky with that sound.
4.12.16 தம் ஸ்ருத்வா நிநதம் ப்ராது:
க்ருத்தோ வாலீ மஹாபல: ।
நிஸ்சக்ராம ஸுஸம்ரப்தோ
பாஸ்கரோऽஸ்ததடாதிவ ॥
taṃ ṡrutvā ninadaṃ bhrātuḥ
kruddhō vālī mahābalaḥ ।
niṡcakrāma susaṃrabdhō
bhāskarō'stataṭādiva ॥
Hearing that yell of his brother,
the mighty strong Vāli
came out in all haste in rage
like the sun from the edge of the mountain
behind which he was about to set.
4.12.17 ததஸ்ஸுதுமுலம் யுத்தம்
வாலிஸுக்ரீவயோரபூத் ।
ககநே க்ரஹயோர்கோரம்
புதாங்காரகயோரிவ ॥
tatassutumulaṃ yuddham
vālisugrīvayōrabhūt ।
gaganē grahayōrghōram
budhāṅgārakayōriva ॥
There ensued a tumultuous fight
between Vāli and Sugreeva,
like a fierce clash between
Mercury and Mars in the sky.
4.12.18 தலைரஸநிகல்பைஸ்ச
வஜ்ரகல்பைஸ்ச முஷ்டிபி: ।
ஜக்நதுஸ்ஸமரேऽந்யோந்யம்
ப்ராதரௌ க்ரோதமூர்சிதௌ ॥
talairaṡanikalpaiṡca
vajrakalpaiṡca muṣṭibhiḥ ।
jaghnatussamarē'nyōnyam
bhrātarau krōdhamūrchitau ॥
Lost in their rage, the brothers struck at each other
with their palms that fell like the thunderbolt,
and their fists that had the impact of the Vajra.
4.12.19 ததோ ராமோ தநுஷ்பாணி:
தாவுபௌ ஸமுதீக்ஷ்யது ।
அந்யோந்யஸத்ருஸௌ வீரௌ
உபௌ தேவாவிவாஸ்விநௌ ॥
tatō rāmō dhanuṣpāṇiḥ
tāvubhau samudīkṣyatu ।
anyōnyasadṛṡau vīrau
ubhau dēvāvivāṡvinau ॥
Rāma, armed with the bow, then
took a close look at the two fighters,
who were exactly like each other,
like the celestial twins, the Aṡwins.
4.12.20 யந்நாவகச்சத்ஸுக்ரீவம்
வாலிநம் வாபி ராகவ: ।
ததோ ந க்ருதவாந்புத்திம்
மோக்துமந்தகரம் ஸரம் ॥
yannāvagacchatsugrīvam
vālinaṃ vāpi rāghavaḥ ।
tatō na kṛtavānbuddhim
mōktumantakaraṃ ṡaram ॥
Unable to make out who was Vāli and who was Sugreeva,
he could not bring himself
to release the arrow that would be fatal.

pralambīkṛtabhūṣaṇaḥ ।
sugrīvaḥ paramaprītō
rāghavāya kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥
Sugreeva, overwhelmed with joy,
joined his palms in reverence and
fell on the ground with his head
touching the feet of Rāghava,
all his ornaments hanging down.
4.12.7 இதம் சோவாச தர்மஜ்ஞம்
கர்மணா தேந ஹர்ஷித: ।
ராமம் ஸர்வாஸ்த்ரவிதுஷாம்
ஸ்ரேஷ்டம் ஸூரமவஸ்திதம் ॥
idaṃ cōvāca dharmajñam

kṣipraṃ gaccha tvamagrataḥ ।
gatvā cāhvaya sugrīva

O Sugreeva! Let us go from here

ஜக்நதுஸ்ஸமரேऽந்யோந்யம்
ப்ராதரௌ க்ரோதமூர்சிதௌ ॥
talairaṡanikalpaiṡca
vajrakalpaiṡca muṣṭibhiḥ ।
jaghnatussamarē'nyōnyam
bhrātarau krōdhamūrchitau ॥
Lost in their rage, the brothers struck at each other
with their palms that fell like the thunderbolt,
and their fists that had the impact of the Vajra.
4.12.19 ததோ ராமோ தநுஷ்பாணி:
தாவுபௌ ஸமுதீக்ஷ்யது ।
அந்யோந்யஸத்ருஸௌ வீரௌ
உபௌ தேவாவிவாஸ்விநௌ ॥
tatō rāmō dhanuṣpāṇiḥ
tāvubhau samudīkṣyatu ।
anyōnyasadṛṡau vīrau
ubhau dēvāvivāṡvinau ॥
Rāma, armed with the bow, then
took a close look at the two fighters,
who were exactly like each other,
like the celestial twins, the Aṡwins.
4.12.20 யந்நாவகச்சத்ஸுக்ரீவம்
வாலிநம் வாபி ராகவ: ।
ததோ ந க்ருதவாந்புத்திம்
மோக்துமந்தகரம் ஸரம் ॥
yannāvagacchatsugrīvam
vālinaṃ vāpi rāghavaḥ ।
tatō na kṛtavānbuddhim
mōktumantakaraṃ ṡaram ॥
Unable to make out who was Vāli and who was Sugreeva,
he could not bring himself
to release the arrow that would be fatal.
