4.16.21 ஏவமுக்தஸ்து ஸுக்ரீவ:
க்ருத்தோ வாலிநமப்ரவீத் ।
தவசைஷ ஹரந்ப்ராணாந்
முஷ்டி: பதது மூர்தநி ॥
ēvamuktastu sugrīvaḥ
kruddhō vālinamabravīt ।
tavacaiṣa haranprāṇān
muṣṭiḥ patatu mūrdhani ॥
Sugreeva, thus jeered, became enraged and said to Vāli:
‘It is on your head that my fist
shall descend, taking your life.’
4.16.22 தாடிதஸ்தேந ஸங்க்ருத்த:
ஸமபிக்ரம்ய வேகத: ।
அபவச்சோணிதோத்காரீ
ஸாபீட இவ பர்வத: ॥
tāḍitastēna saṅkṛddhaḥ
samabhikramya vēgataḥ ।
abhavacchōṇitōdgārī
sāpīḍa iva parvataḥ ॥
Hit by him who advanced swiftly,
he became enraged with blood spurting
from him like a cascade from a mountain.
4.16.23 ஸுக்ரீவேண து நி:ஸம்கம்
ஸாலமுத்பாட்ய தேஜஸா ।
காத்ரேஷ்வபிஹதோ வாலீ
வஜ்ரேணேவ மஹாகிரி: ॥
sugrīvēṇa tu niḥṡaṃkam
sālamutpāṭya tējasā ।
gātrēṣvabhihatō vālī
vajrēṇēva mahāgiriḥ ॥
As for Sugreeva, he pulled out
a Sāla tree by his sheer strength
and delivered an unmistakable
blow to the limbs of Vāli,
like Vajra striking a mountain.
4.16.24 ஸ து வாலீ ப்ரசலித:
ஸாலதாடநவிஹ்வல: ।
குருபாரஸமாக்ராந்தோ
நௌ ஸார்த இவ ஸாகரே ॥
sa tu vālī pracalitaḥ
sālatāḍanavihvalaḥ ।
gurubhārasamākrāntō
nau sārtha iva sāgarē ॥
And Vāli, stunned by the blows from the Sāla tree,
reeled like an overloaded vessel on the high seas
carrying merchants and their merchandise.
4.16.25-26a தௌ பீமபலவிக்ராந்தௌ
ஸுபர்ணஸமவேகிநௌ ।
ப்ரயுத்தௌ கோரவபுஷௌ
சந்த்ரஸூர்யாவிவாம்பரே ।
பரஸ்பரமமித்ரக்நௌ
சித்ராந்வேஷணதத்பரௌ ॥
tau bhīmabalavikrāntau
suparṇasamavēginau ।
prayuddhau ghōravapuṣau
candrasūryāvivāmbarē ।
parasparamamitraghnau
chidrānvēṣaṇatatparau ॥
The two of them, slayers of the foe,
possessed of terrifying bodies, strength and prowess,
looking for every weakness in each other,
commanding the speed of Suparṇa, fought as if
they were the sun and the moon fighting in the sky.
4.16.26b-27a ததோऽவர்தத வாலீ து
பலவீர்யஸமந்வித: ।
ஸூர்யபுத்ரோ மஹாவீர்ய:
ஸுக்ரீவ: பரிஹீயதே ॥
tatō'vardhata vālī tu
balavīryasamanvitaḥ ।
sūryaputrō mahāvīryaḥ
sugrīvaḥ parihīyatē ॥
Gradually, Vāli improved in strength and prowess
while the son of the sun, Sugreeva,
of immense strength, weakened.
4.16.27b-28a வாலிநா பக்நதர்பஸ்து
ஸுக்ரீவோ மந்தவிக்ரம: ।
வாலிநம் ப்ரதி ஸாமர்ஷோ
தர்ஸயாமாஸ லாகவம் ॥
vālinā bhagnadarpastu
sugrīvō mandavikramaḥ ।
vālinaṃ prati sāmarṣō
darṡayāmāsa lāghavam ॥
His pride vanquished by Vāli,
his speed slowed down,
Sugreeva, in his rage against Vāli,
summoned his fighting skills (again).
4.16.28b-29 வ்ருக்ஷை: ஸஸாகை: ஸிகரை:
வஜ்ரகோடிநிபைர்நகை: ।
முஷ்டிபிர்ஜாநுபி: பத்பி:
பாஹுபிஸ்ச புந: புந: ।
தயோர்யுத்தமபூத்கோரம்
வ்ருத்ரவாஸவயோரிவ ॥
vṛkṣaiḥ saṡākhaiḥ ṡikharaiḥ
vajrakōṭinibhairnakhaiḥ ।
muṣṭibhirjānubhiḥ padbhiḥ
bāhubhiṡca punaḥ punaḥ ।
tayōryuddhamabhūdghōram
vṛtravāsavayōriva ॥
A terrible fight ensued between the two,
like the fight between Vṛtra and Vāsava
as they attacked each other repeatedly, using
trees with boughs and foliage,
nails that were sharp-edged like the Vajra,
fists, knees, feet and hands.
4.16.30 தௌ ஸோணிதாக்தௌ யுத்யேதாம்
வாநரௌ வநசாரிணௌ ।
மேகாவிவ மஹாஸப்தை:
தர்ஜமாநௌ பரஸ்பரம் ॥
tau ṡōṇitāktau yudhyētām
vānarau vanacāriṇau ।
mēghāviva mahāṡabdaiḥ
tarjamānau parasparam ॥
Drenched in blood,
the Vānaras, creatures of the wild,
fought on, threatening each other and
making loud sounds like clouds.
4.16.31 ஹீயமாநமதோऽபஸ்யத்
ஸுக்ரீவம் வாநரேஸ்வரம் ।
வீக்ஷமாணம் திஸஸ்சைவ
ராகவஸ்ஸ முஹுர்முஹு: ॥
hīyamānamathō'paṡyat
sugrīvaṃ vānarēṡvaram ।
vīkṣamāṇaṃ diṡaṡcaiva
rāghavassa muhurmuhuḥ ॥
Rāghava saw Sugreeva, lord of Vānaras,
growing weaker and looking
repeatedly in every direction.
4.16.32 ததோ ராமோ மஹாதேஜா
ஆர்தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஹரீஸ்வரம் ।
ஸரம் ச வீக்ஷதே வீரோ
வாலிநோ வதகாம்க்ஷயா ॥
tatō rāmō mahātējā
ārtaṃ dṛṣṭvā harīṡvaram ।
ṡaraṃ ca vīkṣatē vīrō
vālinō vadhakāṃkṣayā ॥
On seeing the lord of Vānaras feeling helpless,
Rāma, the immensely strong Veera,
set his sight on his arrow, intending to kill Vāli.
4.16.33 ததோ தநுஷி ஸந்தாய
ஸரமாஸீவிஷோபமம் ।
பூரயாமாஸ தச்சாபம்
காலசக்ரமிவாந்தக: ॥
tatō dhanuṣi sandhāya
ṡaramāṡīviṣōpamam ।
pūrayāmāsa taccāpam
kālacakramivāntakaḥ ॥
Then, stringing the bow and mounting
that arrow which was like a venomous viper,
he drew the string like Yama wielding Kālacakra.
4.16.34 தஸ்ய ஜ்யாதலகோஷேண
த்ரஸ்தா: பத்ரரதேஸ்வரா: ।
ப்ரதுத்ருவுர்ம்ருகாஸ்சைவ
யுகாந்த இவ மோஹிதா: ॥
tasya jyātalaghōṣēṇa
trastāḥ patrarathēṡvarāḥ ।
pradudruvurmṛgāṡcaiva
yugānta iva mōhitāḥ ॥
The reverberating sound of the bow-string
made the great birds and beasts flee,
as they thought that the universe was coming to an end.
4.16.35 முக்தஸ்து வஜ்ரநிர்கோஷ:
ப்ரதீப்தாஸநிஸந்நிப: ।
ராகவேண மஹாபாணோ
வாலிவக்ஷஸி பாதித: ॥
muktastu vajranirghōṣaḥ
pradīptāṡanisannibhaḥ ।
rāghavēṇa mahābāṇō
vālivakṣasi pātitaḥ ॥
The arrow, discharged by Rāghava,
fell on the breast of Vāli
with the din of the thunderbolt
and blazing like lightning.
4.16.36-37 ததஸ்தேந மஹாதேஜா
வீர்யயுக்த: கபீஸ்வர: ।
வேகேநாபிஹதோ வாலீ
நிபபாத மஹீதலே ।
இந்த்ரத்வஜ இவோத்தூத:
பௌர்ணமாஸ்யாம் மஹீதலே ।
ஆஸ்வயுக்ஸமயே மாஸி
கதஸத்த்வோ விசேதந: ॥
tatastēna mahātējā
vīryayuktaḥ kapīṡvaraḥ ।
vēgēnābhihatō vālī
nipapāta mahītalē ।
indradhvaja ivōddhūtaḥ
paurṇamāsyāṃ mahītalē ।
āṡvayuksamayē māsi
gatasattvō vicētanaḥ ॥
Hit by the arrow with a terrific force,
Vāli, the lord of Vānaras of immense strength and valor,
fell down on the ground,
his energy depleted and his senses lost,
like the flagstaff of Indra brought down
on the full moon day of the month of Āṡvayuja.
4.16.38 நரோத்தம: காலயுகாந்தகோபமம்
ஸரோத்தமம் காஞ்சநரூப்யபாஸிதம் ।
ஸஸர்ஜ தீப்தம் தமமித்ரமர்தநம்
ஸதூமமக்நிம் முகதோ யதா ஹர: ॥
narōttamaḥ kālayugāntakōpamaṃ
ṡarōttamaṃ kāńcanarūpyabhāsitam ।
sasarja dīptaṃ tamamitramardanaṃ
sadhūmamagniṃ mukhatō yathā haraḥ ॥
That best among men, who resembled
Yama at the time of dissolution of the universe,
released that best of the dazzling arrows
that crushes the enemies,
which was decked with gold and silver,
like Hara blowing fire and smoke from His mouth.
4.16.39 அதோக்ஷிதஸ்ஸோணிததோயவிஸ்ரவை:
ப்ரபுஷ்பிதாஸோக இவாநிலோத்தத: ।
விசேதநோ வாஸவஸூநுராஹவே
ப்ரப்ரம்ஸிதேந்த்ரத்வஜவத்க்ஷிதிம் கத: ॥
athōkṣitaṡṡōṇitatōyavisravaiḥ
prapuṣpitāṡōka ivānilōddhataḥ ।
vicētanō vāsavasūnurāhavē
prabhraṃṡitēndradhvajavatkṣitiṃ gataḥ ॥
Drenched with blood and sweat,
the son of Vāsava fell senseless on the battle-field,
like an Aṡōka tree in full flower
brought down by the wind
and like Indra’s flagstaff thrown down.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே ஷோடஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē ṣōḍaṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the sixteenth Sarga
in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
