Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 33
In this Sarga, Lakshmaṇa enters the city of Kishkindhā. The Vānaras guarding the city become scared at the sight of him and stand by obediently. He passes through the seven enclosures with none stopping or checking him.
He then sees the glorious inner quarters of Sugreeva with beautiful women enjoying their way with continuously flowing music. That sight, which is in stark contrast with the state of Rāma, infuriates him. Then he pulls his bowstring and releases it, making a sound that reverberates in all directions.
Sugreeva hears that twang of the bowstring and becomes terribly scared. Then he requests Tārā to go and pacify Lakshmaṇa, before he himself does. Tārā agrees and calms Lakshmaṇa down by appealing to his magnanimity.
A calmed down Lakshmaṇa explains why he was angry. He complains that Sugreeva, indulged in lechery and drinks, forgot about the passing of the four-month time limit he agreed to.
Tārā requests Lakshmaṇa to forgive the lapse of Sugreeva and conveys to him that Sugreeva has already made arrangements for the search of Seetā. She invites him to come inside and Lakshmaṇa enters the inner chambers. Sugreeva and Lakshmaṇa see each other.
4.33.1 அத ப்ரதிஸமாதிஷ்டோ
லக்ஷ்மண: பரவீரஹா ।
ப்ரவிவேஸ குஹாம் ரம்யாம்
கிஷ்கிந்தாம் ராமஸாஸநாத் ॥
atha pratisamādiṣṭō
lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ।
pravivēṡa guhāṃ ramyām
kiṣkindhāṃ rāmaṡāsanāt ॥
Then, having been invited to enter,
Lakshmaṇa, destroyer of enemy forces,
entered Kishkindhā, the beautiful city
among the hills, as had been ordered by Rāma. Lakshmaṇa is entering a city for the first time in many years after he left Ayōdhyā along with Rāma.
Rāma was forbidden to enter a city or even a village, but not Lakshmaṇa. However, Lakshmaṇa is also averse to entering a city that his brother is forbidden from.
But he had no choice but to enter the city now, because he was ordered to by Rāma himself.
4.33.2 த்வாரஸ்தா ஹரயஸ்தத்ர
மஹாகாயா மஹாபலா: ।
பபூவுர்லக்ஷ்மணம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
ஸர்வே ப்ராம்ஜலய: ஸ்திதா: ॥
dvārasthā harayastatra
mahākāyā mahābalāḥ ।
babhūvurlakṣmaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā
sarvē prāṃjalayaḥ sthitāḥ ॥
The Vānaras standing at the entrance,
who were of a huge build and great strength,
stood with their palms joined in reverence,
when they saw Lakshmaṇa.
4.33.3 நிஸ்வஸந்தம் து தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
க்ருத்தம் தஸரதாத்மஜம் ।
பபூவுர்ஹரயஸ்த்ரஸ்தா
ந சைநம் பர்யவாரயந் ॥
niṡvasantaṃ tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā
kruddhaṃ daṡarathātmajam ।
babhūvurharayastrastā
na cainaṃ paryavārayan ॥
Seeing him, the son of Daṡaratha,
angry and breathing heavily,
the Vānaras were scared and
desisted from coming near or around him.
4.33.4 ஸ தாம் ரத்நமயீம் திவ்யாம்
ஸ்ரீமாந் புஷ்பிதகாநநாம் ।
ரம்யாம் ரத்நஸமாகீர்ணாம்
ததர்ஸ மஹதீம் குஹாம் ॥
sa tāṃ ratnamayīṃ divyām
ṡrīmān puṣpitakānanām ।
ramyāṃ ratnasamākīrṇām
dadarṡa mahatīṃ guhām ॥
He, the blessed one, then saw
the great, beautiful and splendid city,
encrusted with gems everywhere,
full of great and rare objects
and its pleasure gardens in flower.
4.33.5 ஹர்ம்யப்ராஸாதஸம்பாதாம்
நாநா ரத்நோபஸோபிதாம் ।
ஸர்வகாலபலைர்வ்ருக்ஷை:
புஷ்பிதைருபஸோபிதாம் ॥
harmyaprāsādasambādhām
nānā ratnōpaṡōbhitām ।
sarvakālaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ
puṣpitairupaṡōbhitām ॥
It was crowded with mansions and palaces,
its splendor enhanced by varieties of gems
and by trees that gave fruit and flower in every season.
4.33.6 தேவகந்தர்வபுத்ரைஸ்ச
வாநரை: காமரூபிபி: ।
திவ்யமால்யாம்பரதரை:
ஸோபிதாம் ப்ரியதர்ஸநை: ॥
dēvagandharvaputraiṡca
vānaraiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ ।
divyamālyāmbaradharaiḥ
ṡōbhitāṃ priyadarṡanaiḥ ॥
It was splendid, filled with Vānaras,
progeny of Dēvas and Gandharvas,
who were capable of taking any form at will,
and who looked charming,
clad in divine garments and garlands.
4.33.7 சந்தநாகருபத்மாநாம்
கந்தைஸ்ஸுரபிகந்திநாம் ।
மைரேயாணாம் மதூநாம் ச
ஸம்மோதிதமஹாபதாம் ॥
candanāgarupadmānām
gandhaissurabhigandhinām ।
mairēyāṇāṃ madhūnāṃ ca
saṃmōditamahāpathām ॥
Its great thoroughfares were fragrant
with the scent of sandal, Agaru, and lotus and
the pervasive smell of strong liquor and mead.
4.33.8 விந்த்யமேருகிரிப்ரக்யை:
ப்ராஸாதைர்நைகபூமிபி: ।
ததர்ஸ கிரிநத்யஸ்ச
விமலாஸ்தத்ர ராகவ: ॥
vindhyamērugiriprakhyaiḥ
prāsādairnaikabhūmibhiḥ ।
dadarṡa girinadyaṡca
vimalāstatra rāghavaḥ ॥
The scion of the Raghus saw multi-storied mansions
that resembled the peaks of Vindhya and Mēru mountains,
and also mountain streams carrying clear water.
4.33.9-12 அங்கதஸ்ய க்ருஹம் ரம்யம்
மைந்தஸ்ய த்விவிதஸ்ய ச ।
கவயஸ்ய கவாக்ஷஸ்ய
கஜஸ்ய ஸரபஸ்ய ச ।
வித்யுந்மாலேஸ்ச ஸம்பாதே:
ஸூர்யாக்ஷஸ்ய ஹநூமத: ।
வீரபாஹோஸ்ஸுபாஹோஸ்ச
நலஸ்ய ச மஹாத்மந: ।
குமுதஸ்ய ஸுஷேணஸ்ய
தாரஜாம்பவதோஸ்ததா ।
ததிவக்த்ரஸ்ய நீலஸ்ய
ஸுபாடலஸுநேத்ரயோ: ।
ஏதேஷாம் கபிமுக்யாநாம்
ராஜமார்கே மஹாத்மநாம் ।
ததர்ஸ க்ருஹமுக்யாநி
மஹாஸாராணி லக்ஷ்மண: ॥

mahāsārāṇi lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
There, Lakshmaṇa saw the beautiful and sturdy houses
of the chiefs of Vānaras
such as Aṅgada, Mainda and Dwivida,
of Gavaya, Gavāksha, Gaja, Sarabha,
of Vidyunmāli, Sampāti, Sūryāksha, Hanuman,
Veerabāhu, Subāhu and Mahātma Nala;
of Kumuda and Susheṇa, Tāra and Jāmbavan,
and of Dadhivaktra and Neela, Supāṭala and Sunētra.
4.33.13 பாண்டுராப்ரப்ரகாஸாநி
கந்தமால்யயுதாநி ச ।
ப்ரபூததநதாந்யாநி
ஸ்த்ரீரத்நைஸ்ஸோபிதாநி ச ॥
pāṇḍurābhraprakāṡāni
gandhamālyayutāni ca ।
prabhūtadhanadhānyāni
strīratnaiṡṡōbhitāni ca ॥
They shone like white clouds,
adorned with fragrant garlands.
They had a profusion of wealth and grain,
and were colorful with the best of womenfolk.
4.33.14-18 பாண்டுரேண து ஸைலேந
பரிக்ஷிப்தம் துராஸதம் ।
வாநரேந்த்ரக்ருஹம் ரம்யம்
மஹேந்த்ரஸதநோபமம் ।
ஸுக்லை: ப்ராஸாதஸிகரை:
கைலாஸஸிகரோபமை: ।
ஸர்வகாமபலைர்வ்ருக்ஷை:
புஷ்பிதைருபஸோபிதம் ।
மஹேந்த்ரதத்தைஸ்ஸ்ரீமத்பி:
நீலஜீமூதஸந்நிபை: ।
திவ்யபுஷ்பபலைர்வ்ருக்ஷை:
ஸீதச்சாயைர்மநோரமை: ।
ஹரிபிஸ்ஸம்வ்ருதத்வாரம்
பலிபிஸ்ஸஸ்த்ரபாணிபி: ।
திவ்யமால்யாவ்ருதம் ஸுப்ரம்
தப்தகாஞ்சநதோரணம் ।
ஸுக்ரீவஸ்ய க்ருஹம் ரம்யம்
ப்ரவிவேஸ மஹாபல: ।
அவார்யமாணஸ்ஸௌமித்ரி:
மஹாப்ரமிவ பாஸ்கர: ॥

parikṣiptaṃ durāsadam ।
vānarēndragṛhaṃ ramyam
mahēndrasadanōpamam ।
ṡuklaiḥ prāsādaṡikharaiḥ
kailāsaṡikharōpamaiḥ ।
sarvakāmaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ
puṣpitairupaṡōbhitam ।
mahēndradattaiṡṡrīmadbhiḥ
nīlajīmūtasannibhaiḥ ।
divyapuṣpaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ
ṡītacchāyairmanōramaiḥ ।
haribhissaṃvṛtadvāram
balibhiṡṡastrapāṇibhiḥ ।
divyamālyāvṛtaṃ ṡubhram
taptakāńcanatōraṇam ।
sugrīvasya gṛhaṃ ramyam
pravivēṡa mahābalaḥ ।
avāryamāṇassaumitriḥ
mahābhramiva bhāskaraḥ ॥
Then he saw the beautiful house of
the chief of Vānaras that no one could dare covet,
one that was surrounded by white mountains
and resembled the palace of Indra.
Its white towers resembled the peaks of Kailāsa.
It was full of trees that were
presented by the great Indra,
giving flower and fruit in all seasons,
and shade that delighted the hearts,
being dense like black clouds.
It was wrapped in fragrant garlands and
its gateway arches were covered in
gold purified in fire.
Its entrance was guarded by
strong Vānaras armed with weapons.
Sowmitri of immense strength entered
that beautiful house of Sugreeva,
like sun piercing into a great cloud,
with no one stopping or checking him.
4.33.19-20 ஸ ஸப்த கக்ஷ்யா தர்மாத்மா
யாநாஸநஸமாவ்ருதா: ।
ப்ரவிஸ்ய ஸுமஹத்குப்தம்
ததர்ஸாந்த:புரம் மஹத் ।
ஹைமராஜதபர்யங்கை:
பஹுபிஸ்ச வராஸநை: ।
மஹார்ஹாஸ்தரணோபேதை:
தத்ர தத்ர ஸமாவ்ருதம் ॥
sa sapta kakṣyā dharmātmā
yānāsanasamāvṛtāḥ ।
praviṡya sumahadguptaṃ
dadarṡāntaḥpuraṃ mahat ।
haimarājataparyaṅkaiḥ
bahubhiṡca varāsanaiḥ ।
mahārhāstaraṇōpētaiḥ
tatra tatra samāvṛtam ॥
That Dharmātma, passing through seven enclosures
and seeing many vehicles and benches around,
entered the great inner quarters
that were highly guarded.
He saw conveniently placed exquisite couches,
beds that only the great could afford or enjoy,
made of gold and silver and
covered with rich upholstery.
4.33.21 ப்ரவிஸந்நேவ ஸததம்
ஸுஸ்ராவ மதுரஸ்வநம் ।
தந்த்ரீகீதஸமாகீர்ணம்
ஸமதாலபதாக்ஷரம் ॥
praviṡannēva satatam
ṡuṡrāva madhurasvanam ।
tantrīgītasamākīrṇam
samatālapadākṣaram ॥

Sowmitri of immense strength entered
that beautiful house of Sugreeva,
like sun piercing into a great cloud,
with no one stopping or checking him.
4.33.19-20 ஸ ஸப்த கக்ஷ்யா தர்மாத்மா
யாநாஸநஸமாவ்ருதா: ।
ப்ரவிஸ்ய ஸுமஹத்குப்தம்
ததர்ஸாந்த:புரம் மஹத் ।
ஹைமராஜதபர்யங்கை:
பஹுபிஸ்ச வராஸநை: ।
மஹார்ஹாஸ்தரணோபேதை:
தத்ர தத்ர ஸமாவ்ருதம் ॥
sa sapta kakṣyā dharmātmā
yānāsanasamāvṛtāḥ ।
praviṡya sumahadguptaṃ
dadarṡāntaḥpuraṃ mahat ।
haimarājataparyaṅkaiḥ
bahubhiṡca varāsanaiḥ ।
mahārhāstaraṇōpētaiḥ
tatra tatra samāvṛtam ॥
That Dharmātma, passing through seven enclosures
and seeing many vehicles and benches around,
entered the great inner quarters
that were highly guarded.
He saw conveniently placed exquisite couches,
beds that only the great could afford or enjoy,
made of gold and silver and
covered with rich upholstery.
4.33.21 ப்ரவிஸந்நேவ ஸததம்
ஸுஸ்ராவ மதுரஸ்வநம் ।
தந்த்ரீகீதஸமாகீர்ணம்
ஸமதாலபதாக்ஷரம் ॥
praviṡannēva satatam
ṡuṡrāva madhurasvanam ।
tantrīgītasamākīrṇam
samatālapadākṣaram ॥
No sooner did he enter, than he heard a
smooth and continuous flow of sweet melody of
songs accompanied by stringed instruments
with the meter and rhythm matching each other perfectly.
