  • Vaikasi Visakam

Vaikasi Visakam is the celebration of the birthday of Lord Muruga. Visakam is the 16th nakshatra among the 27 stars and it is the birth star of Muruga. It is the combination of three stars that shine brightly in the sky in the shape of a thorana or entrance.

Vaikasi Visakam 2017 date is June 7, Wednesday.

Lord Muruga was created to destroy the demonic forces on the earth. His birthday is celebrated on the day when the asterism Visakam falls on Pournami in the month of Vaikasi. Hence, we have the name Vaikasi Visakam.

    Story of Vaikasi Visakam

The Legend behind Vaikasi Visakam is as follows:

Lord Muruga incarnated to destroy the demonic brothers, Surapadman, Tarakasuran and Singamugan. Tarakasuran got great boons from Lord Brahma and was torturing the Devas under his iron grip. His brothers Singamugan and Surapadman were no less evil. The Devas went to Shiva and pleaded with him for rescue.

Lord Shiva in deep meditation opened his eyes and six sparks of fire emanated from his third eye. These six sparks of fire were carried away by Vayu and Agni to the river Ganges. The holy river goddess carried the sparks to Saravana Pond which was filled with water reeds and lotuses. There, these six sparks transformed into six babies lying on six lotuses.

The six babies were taken care of by six Karthigai nymphs who transformed into a constellation of six stars by the blessings of Lord Shiva for their service later. Mother Parvathy united these six babies into one child with six faces and 12 hands. That is the reason why Muruga is called Arumugam and Shanmugan.
