Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 42
In this Sarga, Sugreeva sends Arcishmān and his brothers known as Māreecis and Arcishmālyas along with two hundred thousand Vānaras under the leadership of Sushēṇa in the westerly direction to search for Seetā and Rāvaṇa.
Sugreeva gives them a detailed description of all the places that need to be searched in that direction, starting from Sourāshṭra, Bāhlika, Candracitra regions, all the way to the Mēru mountain and beyond, where the sun sets.
Sugreeva commands them to return and report to him after searching for Seetā. He tells them to abide by the command of Sushēṇa and also think of ways that better serve the purposes based on the circumstances as they emerge.
4.42.1 அத ப்ரஸ்தாப்ய ஸுக்ரீவ:
தாந்ஹரீந்தக்ஷிணாம் திஸம் ।
அப்ரவீந்மேகஸங்காஸம்
ஸுஷேணம் நாம வாநரம் ॥
atha prasthāpya sugrīvaḥ
tānharīndakṣiṇāṃ diṡam ।
abravīnmēghasaṅkāṡam
suṣēṇaṃ nāma vānaram ॥
Having dispatched those Vānaras to the South,
Sugreeva spoke to Sushēṇa
of fierce valor resembling a huge cloud.
4.42.2 தாராயா: பிதரம் ராஜா
ஸ்வஸுரம் பீமவிக்ரமம் ।
அப்ரவீத்ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்வாக்யம்
அபிகம்ய ப்ரணம்ய ச ॥
tārāyāḥ pitaraṃ rājā
ṡvaṡuraṃ bhīmavikramam ।
abravītprāñjalirvākyam
abhigamya praṇamya ca ॥
The king then approached and saluted
Tārā's father, his father-in-law
and spoke with his palms joined in reverence.
4.42.3-5a மஹர்ஷிபுத்ரம் மாரீசம்
அர்சிஷ்மந்தம் மஹாகபிம் ।
வ்ருதம் கபிவரைஸ்ஸூரை:
மஹேந்த்ரஸத்ருஸத்யுதிம் ।
புத்திவிக்ரமஸம்பந்நம்
வைநதேயஸமத்யுதிம் ।
மரீசிபுத்ராந்மாரீசாந்
அர்சிர்மால்யாந்மஹாபலாந் ।
ருஷிபுத்ராம்ஸ்சதாம்த்ஸர்வாந்
ப்ரதீசீமாதிஸத்திஸம் ॥
maharṣiputraṃ mārīcam
arciṣmantaṃ mahākapim ।
vṛtaṃ kapivaraiṡṡūraiḥ
mahēndrasadṛṡadyutim ।
buddhivikramasampannam
vainatēyasamadyutim ।
marīciputrānmārīcān
arcirmālyānmahābalān ।
ṛṣiputrāṃṡcatāṃtsarvān
pratīcīmādiṡaddiṡam ॥
He sent to the West Arcishmān,
the son of Maharshi Mareeci,
whose splendor was like that of Mahēndra,
whose speed equaled that of Garuda
and who was gifted richly with prowess and wisdom
along with the best of Vānaras,
great Ṡūras, who surrounded him.
He also sent to the West all the other
mighty strong sons of Maharshi Mareeci
known as Māreecis and Arcishmālyas.
4.42.5b-6a த்வாப்யாம் ஸதஸஹஸ்ராப்யாம்
கபீநாம் கபிஸத்தமா: ।
ஸுஷேணப்ரமுகா யூயம்
வைதேஹீம் பரிமார்கத ॥
dvābhyāṃ ṡatasahasrābhyām
kapīnāṃ kapisattamāḥ ।
suṣēṇapramukhā yūyam
vaidēhīṃ parimārgatha ॥
O best of Vānaras! Accompanied by
two hundred thousand Vānaras,
you should search for Vaidēhi
under the leadership of Sushēṇa.
4.42.6b-8a ஸுராஷ்ட்ராந்ஸஹபாஹ்லீகாந்
சந்த்ரசித்ராம்ஸ்ததைவ ச ।
ஸ்பீதாஞ்ஜநபதாந்ரம்யாந்
விபுலாநி புராணி ச ।
புந்நாககஹநம் குக்ஷிம்
வகுலோத்தாலகாகுலம் ।
ததா கேதகஷண்டாம்ஸ்ச
மார்கத்வம் ஹரிபும்கவா: ॥
surāṣṭrānsahabāhlīkān
candracitrāṃstathaiva ca ।
sphītāñjanapadānramyān
vipulāni purāṇi ca ।
punnāgagahanaṃ kukṣim
vakulōddālakākulam ।
tathā kētakaṣaṇḍāṃṡca
mārgadhvaṃ haripuṃgavāḥ ॥
O bulls among Vānaras! Search the regions of
Sourāshṭra, Bāhlika, Candracitra, including
the pleasant and prosperous countryside
and the huge cities, the groves of Punnāga trees,
and the central region abounding
in Vakula and Uddālaka trees, and Kētaka groves.
4.42.8b-11a ப்ரத்யக்ஸ்ரோதோவஹாஸ்சைவ
நத்யஸ்ஸீதஜலாஸ்ஸிவா: ।
தாபஸாநாமரண்யாநி
காந்தாரகிரயஸ்ச யே ।
தத்ரஸ்தலீம்மருப்ராயா
அத்யுச்சஸிரஸஸ்ஸிலா: ।
கிரிஜாலாவ்ருதாம் துர்காம்
மார்கித்வா பஸ்சிமாம் திஸம் ।
தத: பஸ்சிமமாகம்ய
ஸமுத்ரம் த்ரஷ்டுமர்ஹத ।
திமிநக்ராகுலஜலம்
கத்வா த்ரக்ஷ்யத வாநரா: ॥
pratyaksrōtōvahāṡcaiva
nadyaṡṡītajalāṡṡivāḥ ।
tāpasānāmaraṇyāni
kāntāragirayaṡca yē ।
tatrasthalīṃmaruprāyā
atyuccaṡirasaṡṡilā: ।
girijālāvṛtāṃ durgām
mārgitvā paṡcimāṃ diṡam ।
tataḥ paṡcimamāgamya
samudraṃ draṣṭumarhatha ।
timinakrākulajalam
gatvā drakṣyatha vānarāḥ ॥
Search along the auspicious streams
of cool waters flowing west,
the woods where Tapa is done,
forests, mountains and the barren lands,
the extremely tall rocks and
the undulating mountains that are difficult to access,
before you go further west to see the Ocean,
that is full of whales and crocodiles.
4.42.11b-12a தத: கேதகஷண்டேஷு
தமாலகஹநேஷு ச ।
கபயோ விஹரிஷ்யந்தி
நாரிகேலவநேஷு ச ॥
tataḥ kētakaṣaṇḍēṣu
tamālagahanēṣu ca ।
kapayō vihariṣyanti
nārikēlavanēṣu ca ॥
There the Vānaras will be pleased to ramble
in Kētaka groves, Tamāla thickets and coconut Vanas.
4.42.12b-14 தத்ர ஸீதாம் ச மார்கத்வம்
நிலயம் ராவணஸ்ய ச ।
வேலாதலநிவிஷ்டேஷு
பர்வதேஷு வநேஷு ச ।
முரசீபத்தநம் சைவ
ரம்யம் சைவ ஜடாபுரம் ।
அவந்தீமங்கலோபாம் ச
ததா சாலக்ஷிதம் வநம் ।
ராஷ்ட்ராணி ச விஸாலாநி
பத்தநாநி ததஸ்தத: ॥
tatra sītāṃ ca mārgadhvam
nilayaṃ rāvaṇasya ca ।
vēlātalaniviṣṭēṣu
parvatēṣu vanēṣu ca ।
muracīpattanaṃ caiva
ramyaṃ caiva jaṭāpuram ।
avantīmaṅgalōpāṃ ca
tathā cālakṣitaṃ vanam ।
rāṣṭrāṇi ca viṡālāni
pattanāni tatastataḥ ॥
You should look there for Seetā
and also for the abode of Rāvaṇa,
in the mountains and the forests
that are on the shores of the ocean,
in the city of Muraci, in the beautiful city of Jaṭa,
in the cities of Avanti and Aṅgalōpa,
in the Vana of Alakshita,
and also in the countryside
and in the big cities around there.
4.42.15 ஸிந்துஸாகரயோஸ்சைவ
ஸங்கமே தத்ர பர்வத: ।
மஹாந் ஸோமகிரிர்நாம
ஸதஸ்ருங்கோ மஹாத்ரும: ॥
sindhusāgarayōṡcaiva
saṅgamē tatra parvataḥ ।
mahān sōmagirirnāma
ṡataṡṛṅgō mahādrumaḥ ॥
At the confluence of the river Sindhu and the ocean
is the great mountain known as Sōmagiri
with a hundred peaks and great trees (growing on it).
4.42.16 தத்ர ப்ரஸ்தேஷு ரம்யேஷு
ஸிம்ஹா: பக்ஷகமா: ஸ்திதா: ।
திமிமத்ஸ்யகஜாம்ஸ்சைவ
நீடாந்யாரோபயந்தி தே ॥
tatra prasthēṣu ramyēṣu
siṃhāḥ pakṣagamāḥ sthitāḥ ।
timimatsyagajāṃṡcaiva
nīḍānyārōpayanti tē ॥
On its pleasant flanks are to be found
lions with wings, which carry off to their nests
whales, fish and elephants.
4.42.17-18a தாநி நீடாநி ஸிம்ஹாநாம்
கிரிஸ்ருங்ககதாஸ்ச யே ।
த்ருப்தாஸ்த்ருப்தாஸ்ச மாதங்கா:
தோயதஸ்வநநிஸ்வநா: ।
விசரந்தி விஸாலேऽஸ்மிந்
தோயபூர்ணே ஸமந்தத: ॥
tāni nīḍāni siṃhānām
giriṡṛṅgagatāṡca yē ।
dṛptāstṛptāṡca mātaṅgāḥ
tōyadasvananisvanāḥ ।
vicaranti viṡālē'smin
tōyapūrṇē samantataḥ ॥
And by those wide nests of the lions,
which are surrounded by waters,
roam the proud and contented tuskers
trumpeting loud like the rumble of clouds.
4.42.18b-19a தத்ர ஸ்ருங்கம் திவஸ்பர்ஸம்
காஞ்சநம் சித்ரபாதபம் ।
ஸர்வமாஸு விசேதவ்யம்
கபிபி: காமரூபிபி: ॥
tatra ṡṛṅgaṃ divasparṡam
kāñcanaṃ citrapādapam ।
sarvamāṡu vicētavyam
kapibhiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ ॥
The Vānaras who can take any form at will
should search everywhere on the
tall, golden peak that seems to touch the sky,
on which grow amazing trees.
4.42.19b-20a கோடிம் தத்ர ஸமுத்ரே து
காஞ்சநீம் ஸதயோஜநாம் ।
துர்தர்ஷாம் பாரியாத்ரஸ்ய
கத்வா த்ரக்ஷ்யத வாநரா: ॥
kōṭiṃ tatra samudrē tu
kāñcanīṃ ṡatayōjanām ।
durdarṣāṃ pāriyātrasya
gatvā drakṣyatha vānarāḥ ॥
O Vānaras! Reaching there, you will see
the hundred Yōjana tall golden crest
of the Pāriyātra mountain in the ocean
whose dazzle makes it difficult to behold.
