    Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 49
In this Sarga, Aṅgada cheers up the Vānaras who became tired and felt dejected, asserting that there is no other formula for success than to get over the feeling of hopelessness and to deploy their skills. He reminds them of how annoyed and ruthless Sugreeva could be if they failed in their search. Gandhamādana agrees with Aṅgada. All the Vānaras search the mountain up and down again. After resting for a while, they start the search again in the southerly direction.
    athāṅgadastadā sarvān
    vānarānidamabravīt ।
    pariṡrāntō mahāprājńaḥ
    samāṡvāsya ṡanairvacaḥ ॥
    Then the great sagacious Aṅgada,
tired as he was, spoke gently,
    cheering up all those Vānaras:
    vanāni girayō nadyō

    tatra tatra sahāsmābhiḥ
    jānakī na ca dṛṡyatē ।
    tathā rakṣōpahartā ca
    sītāyāṡcaiva duṣkṛtī ॥
    We have, together, searched everywhere,
in the Vanas, in the hills, by the rivers,
in the inaccessible and impenetrable thickets,
in the hollows and in the mountain caves,
but have not found Jānaki or
the evil Rākshasa who had carried off Seetā.

    kālaṡca nō mahānyātaḥ
    sugrīvaṡcōgraṡāsanaḥ ।
    tasmādbhavantassahitā
    vicinvantu samantataḥ ॥
A great deal of time has passed.
    Sugreeva is very serious about
what he has commanded us to do.
So, all of you, joining together,
    should search everywhere.

    vihāya tandrīṃ ṡōkaṃ ca
    nidrāṃ caiva samutthitām ।
    vicinudhvaṃ yathā sītām
    paṡyāmō janakātmajām ॥
Give up this weariness, sadness and
drowsiness that is taking over you.
Let us search and find Seetā, Janaka’s daughter.

    anirvēdaṃ ca dākṣyaṃ ca
    manasaṡcāparājayaḥ ।
    kāryasiddhikarāṇyāhuḥ
    tasmādētadbravīmyaham ॥
    Not caving in to hopelessness,
not letting the mind accept defeat and
    being skillful in execution are
said to be the secrets of success
and that is why I say this.

    adyāpīdaṃ vanaṃ durgam
    vicinvantu vanaukasaḥ ।
    khēdaṃ tyaktvā punassarvaiḥ
    vanamētadvicīyatām ॥
    All of you, Vana dwellers,
give up your gloom and search again
    this tangled wilderness today.
    avaṡyaṃ kurvatāṃ tasya
    dṛṡyatē karmaṇaḥ phalam ।
    paraṃ nirvēdamāgamya
na hi nō mīlanaṃ kṣamam ॥
    Those who work will certainly
realize the fruits of their labor.
On the other hand, if we let ourselves
    succumb to hopelessness, we will
find it difficult to even close our eyes.
    sugrīvaḥ krōdhanō rājā
    tīkṣṇadaṇḍaṡca vānarāḥ ।
    bhētavyaṃ tasya satatam
    rāmasya ca mahātmanaḥ ॥
    Sugreeva can easily get irate
and he is ruthless in punishing.
We should always be wary of him and the Mahātma Rāma.
    hitārthamētaduktaṃ vaḥ
    kriyatāṃ yadi rōcatē ।
    ucyatāṃ hi kṣamaṃ yattat
    sarvēṣāmēva vānarāḥ ॥
    O Vānaras! I say this for your own good;
do accordingly, if it appeals to you
or tell me whatever else is right for us to do!
    aṅgadasya vacaṡṡrutvā
    vacanaṃ gandhamādanaḥ ।
    uvācā'vyaktayā vācā
    pipāsāṡramakhinnayā ॥
    Hearing those words of Aṅgada,
    Gandhamādana responded in a voice
that became indistinct as he suffered
    from thirst and weariness:
    sadṛṡaṃ khalu vō vākyam
    aṅgadō yaduvāca ha ।
    hitaṃ caivānukūlaṃ ca
    kriyatāmasya bhāṣitam ॥
    Whatever Aṅgada said should
    certainly be acceptable to you.
His advice, practical and valuable, should be followed.
    punarmārgāmahē ṡailān
    kandarāṃṡca ṡilastathā ।
    kānanāni ca ṡūnyāni
    giriprasravaṇāni ca ॥
Let us search again among the hills,
the hollows, the boulders, the forests,
the mountains, the streams and the desolate places.
    yathōddiṣṭāni sarvāṇi
    sugrīvēṇa mahātmanā ।
    vicinvantu vanaṃ sarvē
    giridurgāṇi sarvaṡaḥ ॥
All of you should join together and search
the Vana and the thickets on the mountains
as have been instructed by Mahātma Sugreeva.
    tatassamutthāya punaḥ
    vānarāstē mahābalāḥ ।
    vindhyakānanasaṅkīrṇām
    vicērurdakṣiṇāṃ diṡam ॥
    Thereupon, those mighty strong Vānaras
got up and searched again in the southerly direction,
where lay the thick wilderness of the Vindhyas.

    tatra lōdhravanaṃ ramyam
    saptaparṇavanāni ca ।
    vicinvaṃtō harivarāḥ
    sītādarṡanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ॥
    Ascending that gorgeous Silver Mountain
which was majestic like a post-monsoon cloud
with its many peaks and hollows,
the Vānaras, eager to find Seetā,
    searched the beautiful Vanas
of Lōdhra and Saptaparṇa on it.

    tasyāgramadhirūḍhāstē
    ṡrāntā vipulavikramāḥ ।
    na paṡyanti sma vaidēhīm
    rāmasya mahiṣīṃ priyām ॥
They, of as great prowess as they were,
became tired by the time they
climbed to the top of the mountain.
    They could not find Vaidēhi,
    the beloved queen of Rāma.

    tē tu dṛṣṭigataṃ dṛṣṭvā
    taṃ ṡailaṃ bahukandaram ।
    avārōhanta harayō
    vīkṣamāṇāssamantataḥ ॥
    After looking through every place
on that mountain of many hollows
that caught their sight, the Vānaras
    climbed down, looking everywhere.

    avaruhya tatō bhūmim
    ṡrāntā vigatacētasaḥ ।
    sthitvā muhūrtaṃ tatrātha
    vṛkṣamūlamupāṡritāḥ ॥
As they climbed down to the ground,
    they became tired and listless.
After resting there for a Muhūrta,
they assembled at the base of the trees.

    kińcidbhagnapariṡramāḥ ।
    punarēvōdyatāḥ kṛtsnām
    mārgituṃ dakṣiṇāṃ diṡam ॥
    Having rested for a Muhūrta
and shed some of their fatigue,
they started again to search the entire South.

    prasthitāḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ ।
    vindhyamēvāditaḥ kṛtvā
    vicērustē samantataḥ ॥
Hanumān and the other great bulls among Vānaras
went on with their search everywhere,
with the Vindhyas as their starting point.
