    Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 54
    In this Sarga, noting that Aṅgada is under the influence of Tāra, Hanumān uses his strategic skills and makes the Vānaras distance themselves from Aṅgada, and then he intimidates Aṅgada by warning him that Lakshmaṇa’s arrows would hunt and kill him if he stays back hiding in the cave. He advices him to go back to Sugreeva and assures him that Sugreeva will treat him well and that Sugreeva would pass on the kingdom to him, especially because Sugreeva has no sons of his own.

    தாராதிபதிவர்சஸி ।
    அத மேநே ஹ்ருதம் ராஜ்யம்
    ஹநூமாநங்கதேந தத் ॥
    tathā bruvati tārē tu
    tārādhipativarcasi ।
    atha mēnē hṛtaṃ rājyam
    hanūmānaṅgadēna tat ॥
    When Tāra, of moon-like luster spoke thus,
    Hanumān thought that it was as good as
    Aṅgada taking over the kingdom. The eight steps are:
    ṡaṡrūṣā ṡravaṇaṃ caiva
    grahaṇaṃ dhāraṇam tathā
    ūhāpōhārthavijnānam
    tatvajñānaṃ ca dhīguṇāḥ
    1. ṡaṡrūṣā - Soliciting (information)
    2. ṡravaṇaṃ - Listening attentively
    3. grahaṇaṃ - Receiving faithfully
    4. dhāraṇam - Ruminating carefully
    5. ūha - Extending the imagination (to fill the gaps)
    6. apōha - Getting rid of distractions
    7. arthavijnānam - consolidating the material information
    8. tatvajñānaṃ - inferring the essence
    The four strengths are:
    1. bāhubala - Physical strength
    2. manōbala - Mental strength
    3. upāyabala - Strength of tact
    4. baṃdhubala - Strength of supporters
    The fourteen virtues are:
    dēṡakālajñatā dārḍhyam
    sarvaklēṡasahiṣṇutā
    sarvavijñānatā dākṣyam
    ūrjaḥ saṃvṛtamantratā
    avisaṃvāditā ṡauryam
    bhaktijñatvaṃ kṛtajñatā
    ṡaraṇāgatavātsalyam
    amarṣitvamacāpalam
    1. Sense of time and place
    2. Stability
    3. Fortitude
    4. Full awareness
    5. Adroitness
    6. Self-defense
    7. Keeping strategies guarded
    8. Non-argumentative
    9. Valor
    10.Being cognizant of loyalty
    11.Being grateful
    12.Caring for the dependents
    13.Outrage (when needed)
    14.Steadiness in thought

    சதுர்பலஸமந்விதம் ।
    சதுர்தஸகுணம் மேநே
    ஹநூமாந்வாலிநஸ்ஸுதம் ॥
    buddhyā hyaṣṭāṅgayā yuktam
    caturbalasamanvitam ।
    caturdaṡaguṇaṃ mēnē
    hanūmānvālinassutam ॥
    Hanumān assessed that the son of Vāli
    was endowed with a mind that followed the eight steps,
    and possessed the four strengths and fourteen virtues.

    தேஜோபலபராக்ரமை: ।
    ஸஸிநம் ஸுக்லபக்ஷாதௌ
    வர்தமாநமிவ ஸ்ரியா ॥
    āpūryamāṇaṃ ṡaṡvacca
    tējōbalaparākramaiḥ ।
    ṡaṡinaṃ ṡuklapakṣādau
    vardhamānamiva ṡriyā ॥
    (He saw him) waxing steadily
    in power, strength and prowess,
    like the moon increasing in effulgence
    starting from the day after new moon day.

    4.54.4 ஈ ப்ருஹஸ்பதிஸமம் புத்த்யா
    விக்ரமே ஸத்ருஸம் பிது: ।
    ஸுஸ்ரூஷமாணம் தாரஸ்ய
    ஸுக்ரஸ்யேவ புரந்தரம் ॥
    bṛhaspatisamaṃ buddhyā
    vikramē sadṛṡaṃ pituḥ ।
    ṡuṡrūṣamāṇaṃ tārasya
    ṡukrasyēva purandaram ॥
    (He saw him) to be an equal
    to Bṛhaspati in intelligence and
    an equal to his father in prowess,
    yet lending an ear to Tāra,
    (as inconceivably) as Purandara
    lending an ear to Ṡukra.
    Ṡukra is the guru of the Rakshasas.

    ஸர்வஸாஸ்த்ரவிஸாரத: ।
    அபிஸந்தாதுமாரேபே

    sarvaṡāstraviṡāradaḥ ।
    abhisandhātumārēbhē
    Then Hanumān, who was well versed in all Ṡāstras,
    started his efforts to get the exhausted Aṅgada
    to focus on the object of his master.

    4.54.6 இ ஸ சதுர்ணாமுபாயாநாம்
    த்ருதீயமுபவர்ணயந் ।
    பேதயாமாஸ தாந்ஸர்வாந்
    வாநராந்வாக்யஸம்பதா ॥
    sa caturṇāmupāyānām
    tṛtīyamupavarṇayan ।
    bhēdayāmāsa tānsarvān
    vānarānvākyasampadā ॥
    Deploying the third of the four Upāyas
    and using his skill with words,
    he caused all Vānaras to break away (from Aṅgada). There are four techniques in dealing with an enemy or adversary or a potential threat. They are called Upāyas. They are :
    1. Sāma – negotiate and reconcile
    2. Dāna – placate with an offer
    3. Bhēda – divide and conquer
    4. Daṇḍa – deal with a blow

    ததோऽபீஷயதங்கதம் ।
    பீஷணைர்பஹுபிர்வாக்யை:
    கோபோபாயஸமந்விதை: ॥
    tēṣu sarvēṣu bhinnēṣu
    tatō'bhīṣayadaṅgadam ।
    bhīṣaṇairbahubhirvākyaiḥ
    kōpōpāyasamanvitaiḥ ॥
    Once all of them broke apart,
    he intimidated Aṅgada by pretending to be irate,
    and by delivering stern warnings of various kinds.

    4.54.8 இ த்வம் ஸமர்ததர: பித்ரா
    யுத்தே தாரேய வை த்ருவம் ।
    த்ருடம் தாரயிதும் ஸக்த:
    கபிராஜ்யம் யதா பிதா ॥
    tvaṃ samarthataraḥ pitrā
    yuddhē tārēya vai dhruvam ।
    dṛḍhaṃ dhārayituṃ ṡaktaḥ
    kapirājyaṃ yathā pitā ॥
    O son of Tara! You are, without a doubt,
    more capable than even your father, in a fight.
    You are capable of firmly holding
    the Vānara kingdom like your father was.

    4.54.9 இ நித்யமஸ்திரசித்தா ஹி
    கபயோ ஹரிபுங்கவ ।
    நாஜ்ஞாப்யம் விஷஹிஷ்யந்தி

    nityamasthiracittā hi
    kapayō haripuṅgava ।
    nājñāpyaṃ viṣahiṣyanti
    putradārānvinā tvayā ॥
    O bull among Vānaras!
    (However, you should better know)
    that the Vānaras are fickle minded.
    They would not be in your control
    without their wives and children around.

    யதாऽயம் ஜாம்பவாந்நீல:
    ஸுஹோத்ரஸ்ச மஹாகபி: ।
    ந ஹ்யஹம் தே இமே ஸர்வே
    ஸாமதாநாதிபிர்குணை: ।
    தண்டேந வா த்வயா ஸக்யா:
    ஸுக்ரீவாதபகர்ஷிதம் ॥
    tvāṃ naitēhyanuyuñjēyuḥ
    pratyakṣaṃ pravadāmi tē ।
    yathā'yaṃ jāmbavānnīlaḥ
    suhōtraṡca mahākapiḥ ।
    na hyahaṃ tē imē sarvē
    sāmadānādibhirguṇaiḥ ।
    daṇḍēna vā tvayā ṡakyāḥ
    sugrīvādapakarṣitam ॥
    Let me put it plainly to you –
    neither Jāmbavan, nor Neela, nor the great
    Vānara Suhōtra, will be with you,
    and I certainly will not be.
    You cannot pull us away from Sugreeva
    by (any Upāya), be it Sāma, Dāna or Daṇḍa.

    துர்பலேந பலீயஸ: ।
    ஆத்மரக்ஷாகரஸ்தஸ்மாத்
    ந விக்ருஹ்ணீத துர்பல: ॥
    vigṛhyāsanamapyāhuḥ
    durbalēna balīyasaḥ ।
    ātmarakṣākarastasmāt
    na vigṛhṇīta durbalaḥ ॥
    A strong one can hang on to his seat
    even by antagonizing a weak one,
    but a weak one has to worry about
    his own life, antagonizing a strong one.

    4.54.13 இ யாம் சேமாம் மந்யஸே தாத்ரீம்
    ஏதத்பிலமிதி ஸ்ருதம் ।
    ஏதல்லக்ஷ்மணபாணாநாம்
    ஈஷத்கார்யம் விதாரணே ॥
    yāṃ cēmāṃ manyasē dhātrīm
    ētadbilamiti ṡrutam ।
    ētallakṣmaṇabāṇānām
    īṣatkāryaṃ vidāraṇē ॥
    You may dream about the land.
    One may talk about the cave.
    But they are no more than a trifle
    for the arrows of Lakshmana to rend.

    4.54.14 இ ஸ்வல்பம் ஹி க்ருதமிந்த்ரேண
    க்ஷிபதா ஹ்யஸநிம் புரா ।
    லக்ஷ்மணோ நிஸிதைர்பாணை:
    பிந்த்யாத்பத்ரபுடம் யதா ॥
    svalpaṃ hi kṛtamindrēṇa
    kṣipatā hyaṡaniṃ purā ।
    lakṣmaṇō niṡitairbāṇaiḥ
    bhindhyātpatrapuṭaṃ yathā ॥
    What the thunderbolt hurled by Indra
    has done, once upon a time, is trivial;
    the sharp arrows of Lakshmaṇa will
    tear apart (everything) as if it were a leaf.

    4.54.15 இ லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ய ச நாராசா
    பஹவஸ்ஸந்தி தத்விதா: ।
    வஜ்ராஸநிஸமஸ்பர்ஸா
    கிரீணாமபி தாரணா: ॥
    lakṣmaṇasya ca nārācā
    bahavassanti tadvidhāḥ ।
    vajrāṡanisamasparṡā
    girīṇāmapi dāraṇāḥ ॥
    There are plenty of such Nārācās with Lakshmaṇa,
    that strike like Vajra and the thunderbolt,
    tearing apart even mountains.

    4.54.16 இ அவஸ்தாநே யதைவ த்வம்
    ஆஸிஷ்யஸி பரந்தப ।
    ததைவ ஹரயஸ்ஸர்வே
    த்யக்ஷ்யந்தி க்ருதநிஸ்சயா: ॥
    avasthānē yadaiva tvam
    āsiṣyasi parantapa ।
    tadaiva harayassarvē
    tyakṣyanti kṛtaniṡcayāḥ ॥
    O scorcher of the foe!
    No sooner than you settle yourself in the cave,
    will the Vānaras, firmly resolved, desert you.

    நித்யோத்விக்நா புபுக்ஷிதா: ।
    கேதிதா து:கஸய்யாபி:

    smarantaḥ putradārāṇām
    nityōdvignā bubhukṣitāḥ ।
    khēditā duḥkhaṡayyābhiḥ
    tvāṃ kariṣyanti pṛṣṭhataḥ ॥
    Thinking about their children and wives,
    and suffering constantly from hunger and
    from the pain of sleeping on hard beds,
    they will leave you behind.

    4.54.18 இ ஸ த்வம் ஹீநஸ்ஸுஹ்ருத்பிஸ்ச
    ஹிதகாமைஸ்ச பந்துபி: ।
    த்ருணாதபி ப்ருஸோத்விக்ந:
    ஸ்பந்தமாநாத்பவிஷ்யஸி ॥
    sa tvaṃ hīnassuhṛdbhiṡca
    hitakāmaiṡca bandhubhiḥ ।
    tṛṇādapi bhṛṡōdvignaḥ
    spandamānādbhaviṣyasi ॥
    Losing your friends, well-wishers and relations
    you will become agitated beyond measure
    even by the swaying of a reed.

    4.54.19 இ அத்யுக்ரவேகா நிஸிதா
    கோரா லக்ஷ்மணஸாயகா: ।
    அபாவ்ருத்தம் ஜிகாம்ஸந்தோ
    மஹாவேகா துராஸதா: ॥
    atyugravēgā niṡitā
    ghōrā lakṣmaṇasāyakāḥ ।
    apāvṛttaṃ jighāṃsantō
    mahāvēgā durāsadāḥ ॥
    The extremely fast, sharp and invincible
    arrows of Lakshmana would
    hunt and kill you for being disloyal.

    4.54.20 இ அஸ்மாபிஸ்து கதம் ஸார்தம்
    விநீதவதுபஸ்திதம் ।
    ஆநுபூர்வ்யாத்து ஸுக்ரீவோ
    ராஜ்யே த்வாம் ஸ்தாபயிஷ்யதி ॥
    asmābhistu gataṃ sārdham
    vinītavadupasthitam ।
    ānupūrvyāttu sugrīvō
    rājyē tvāṃ sthāpayiṣyati ॥
    But if you go back with us and stay obedient,
    Sugreeva will establish you in the kingdom
    in accordance with the custom of succession.

    4.54.21 இ தர்மராஜ: பித்ருவ்யஸ்தே
    ப்ரீதிகாமோ த்ருடவ்ரத: ।

    ந த்வாம் ஜாது ந நாஸயேத் ॥
    dharmarājaḥ pitṛvyastē
    prītikāmō dṛḍhavrataḥ ।
    ṡucissatyapratijñaṡca
    na tvāṃ jātu na nāṡayēt ॥
    Your uncle is known for adhering to Dharma.
    He is interested in maintaining good relations.
    He is a man of firm convictions.
    He is pure and wedded to Truth.
    He will never seek your destruction.

    4.54.22 இ ப்ரியகாமஸ்ச தே மாது:
    ததர்தம் சாஸ்ய ஜீவிதம் ।
    தஸ்யாபத்யம் ச நாஸ்த்யந்யத்
    தஸ்மாதங்கத கம்யதாம் ॥
    priyakāmaṡca tē mātuḥ
    tadarthaṃ cāsya jīvitam ।
    tasyāpatyaṃ ca nāstyanyat
    tasmādaṅgada gamyatām ॥
    He wishes your mother well
    and in fact, lives for it,
    and he has no son of his own.
    So, Aṅgada, let us go back!
    இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
    ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே ।
    கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே சதுஷ்பஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க:
    ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
    ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē ।
    kiṣkindhākāṇḍē catuṣpañcāṡassargaḥ
    Thus concludes the fifty fourth Sarga
    in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
