Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 64
In this Sarga, the Vānaras fall in despair seeing the mighty roaring ocean full of all sorts of creatures of weird shapes. Aṅgada then tries to cheer them up, and meanwhile the night falls.
The next day, Aṅgada addresses the entire army and the elder Vānaras, asking who among them can save the day by leaping across the ocean, so that they can all go back to see their wives, children and homes, and make Sugreeva a man of his word.
As everyone stays silent, he changes his question slightly and asks them to tell how far each one of them can leap across.

ākhyātā gṛdhrarājēna
samutplutya plavaṅgamāḥ ।
saṅgatāḥ prītisaṃyuktā
vinēduḥ siṃha vikramāḥ ॥
Thus told by the king of eagles,
all the Vānaras of lion-like gait
came together and jumped and shouted with joy.

Hearing about Rāvaṇa’s abode from Sampāti,
the Vānaras arrived at the ocean, eager to see Seetā.

தத்ருஸுர்பீமவிக்ரமா: ।

dadṛṡurbhīmavikramāḥ ।
kṛtsnaṃ lōkasya mahataḥ
pratibimbamiva sthitam ॥
Arriving there, they of terrific prowess
saw what seemed to be a mirror of the entire world.

The heroic Vānaras of immense strength
camped there on the northern shore of the Southern sea.

க்ரீடந்தமிவ சாந்யத: ।
க்வசித்பர்வதமாத்ரைஸ்ச
ஜலராஸிபிராவ்ருதம் ।
ஸங்குலம் தாநவேந்த்ரைஸ்ச
பாதாலதலவாஸிபி: ।
ரோமஹர்ஷகரம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
விஷேது: கபிகுஞ்ஜரா: ॥
sattvairmahadbhirvikṛtaiḥ
krīḍadbhirv ividhairjalē ।
vyatyastaissumahākāyaiḥ
ūrmibhiṡca samākulam ।
prasuptamiva cānyatra
krīḍantamiva cānyataḥ ।
kvacitparvatamātraiṡca
jalarāṡibhirāvṛtam ।
saṅkulaṃ dānavēndraiṡca
pātālatalavāsibhiḥ ।
rōmaharṣakaraṃ dṛṣṭvā
viṣēduḥ kapikuńjarāḥ ॥
Gigantic creatures of weird shapes
were playing in the waters.
Huge waves that broke and fell
upon themselves filled the ocean.
It seemed to be quiet and sleepy at some places
and active and playful at others, while
it was billowing with mountainous waves at others.
It seemed to be crowded with the
chiefs of Dānavas who lived in the Pātāla.
Gloom descended on those elephants among Vānaras,
when they saw that which would
make one’s hair stand on its end.

ஸாகரம் ப்ரேக்ஷ்ய வாநரா: ।
விஷேதுஸ்ஸஹஸாஸர்வே
கதம் கார்யமிதி ப்ருவந் ॥
ākāṡamiva duṣpāram
sāgaraṃ prēkṣya vānarāḥ ।
viṣēdussahasāsarvē
kathaṃ kāryamiti bruvan ॥
Looking at the sea which seemed
as impossible to cross as the sky itself,
all the Vānaras fell in despair saying:
‘What shall we do now?’

ஸாகரஸ்ய நிரீக்ஷணாத் ।
ஆஸ்வாஸயாமாஸ ஹரீந்
பயார்தாந் ஹரிஸத்தம: ॥
viṣaṇṇāṃ vāhinīṃ dṛṣṭvā
sāgarasya nirīkṣaṇāt ।
āṡvāsayāmāsa harīn
bhayārtān harisattamaḥ ॥
Noting that the army felt helpless
at the sight of the ocean,
(Aṅgada), the best among Vānaras,
assuaged the fears of those Vānaras.

விஷண்ணாந்வாநரர்ஷபாந் ।
உவாச மதிமாந்காலே
வாலிஸூநுர்மஹாபல: ॥
tānviṣādēna mahatā
viṣaṇṇānvānararṣabhān ।
uvāca matimānkālē
vālisūnurmahābalaḥ ॥
That sagacious and immensely strong son of Vali,
said what was appropriate at that time
to those bulls among Vānaras,
who were in great despair.

விஷாதோ தோஷவத்தர: ।
விஷாதோ ஹந்தி புருஷம்
பாலம் க்ருத்த இவோரக: ॥
na viṣādē manaḥ kāryam
viṣādō dōṣavattaraḥ ।
viṣādō hanti puruṣam
bālaṃ kruddha ivōragaḥ ॥
Let your mind not yield to despair.
It is the worst of all failings.
Despair kills a man like
an angry serpent kills a child.

விக்ரமே ஸமுபஸ்திதே ।
தேஜஸா தஸ்ய ஹீநஸ்ய

yō viṣādaṃ prasahatē
vikramē samupasthitē ।
tējasā tasya hīnasya
puruṣārthō na siddhyati ॥
He who succumbs to despair
at a time that calls for courage
will lose his power and spoils his object.

அங்கதோ வாநரைஸ்ஸஹ ।

tasyāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyām
aṅgadō vānaraissaha ।
harivṛddhaissamāgamya
punarmantramamantrayat ॥
After that night passed,
Aṅgada along with other Vānaras
conferred with the elder Vānaras
to discuss again more ideas.

பரிவார்யாங்கதம் பபௌ ।
வாஸவம் பரிவார்யேவ

sā vānarāṇāṃ dhvajinī
parivāryāṅgadaṃ babhau ।
vāsavaṃ parivāryēva
marutāṃ vāhinī sthitā ॥
With that army of Vānaras surrounding him,
Aṅgada shone like Vāsava
surrounded by the army of Maruts.

ஸக்த:ஸ்தம்பயிதும் பவேத் ।

kō'nyastāṃ vānarīṃ sēnām
ṡaktaḥstambhayituṃ bhavēt ।
anyatra vālitanayāt
anyatra ca hanūmataḥ ॥
Who other than the son of Vāli or Hanumān
could set that army of Vānaras in order?

தச்ச ஸைந்யமரிந்தம: ।
அநுமாந்யாங்கதஸ்ஸ்ரீமாந்
வாக்யமர்தவதப்ரவீத் ॥
tatastānharivṛddhāṃṡca
tacca sainyamarindamaḥ ।
anumānyāṅgadaṡṡrīmān
vākyamarthavadabravīt ॥
Then the blessed Aṅgada, subduer of foe,
addressed that army and the elder Vānaras
with these purposeful words, spoken in all deference:

லங்கயிஷ்யதி ஸாகரம் ।
க: கரிஷ்யதி ஸுக்ரீவம்

ka idānīṃ mahātējā
laṅghayiṣyati sāgaram ।
kaḥ kariṣyati sugrīvam
satyasandhamarindamam ॥
Who is the mighty strong one
that can leap over this ocean?
Who can make Sugreeva, the subduer of foe,
a man of his word?

லங்கயேத ப்லவங்கமா: ।
இமாம்ஸ்ச யூதபாந் ஸர்வாந்

kō vīrō yōjanaṡatam
laṅghayēta plavaṅgamāḥ ।
imāṃṡca yūthapān sarvān
mōcayētkō mahābhayāt ॥
Which Vānara is the Veera
who can jump over a distance of a hundred Yōjanas,
and free all these warriors from their great fear?

புத்ராம்ஸ்சைவ க்ருஹாணி ச ।

kasya prasādāddārāṃṡca
putrāṃṡcaiva gṛhāṇi ca ।
itō nivṛttāḥ paṡyēma
siddhārthāssukhinō vayam ॥
By whose grace can we succeed in our mission
and go back happily from here
to see our wives, children and homes?

லக்ஷ்மணம் ச மஹாபலம் ।
அபிகச்சேம ஸம்ஹ்ருஷ்டா:

kasya prasādādrāmaṃ ca
lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahābalam ।
abhigacchēma saṃhṛṣṭāḥ
sugrīvaṃ ca vanaukasam ॥
By whose favor can we happily approach
Rāma, the mighty strong Lakshmaṇa
and Sugreeva the Vana dweller?

ஸாகரப்லவநே ஹரி: ।
ஸ ததாத்விஹ நஸ்ஸீக்ரம்

yadi kaṡcitsamarthō vaḥ
sāgaraplavanē hariḥ ।
sa dadātviha naṡṡīghraṃ
puṇyāmabhayadakṣiṇām ॥
If there is any Vānara who is
capable of crossing the ocean,
may he grant us quickly the
the bliss of freedom from fear!

4.64.23 ஆ அங்கதஸ்ய வசஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா
ந கஸ்சித் கிஞ்சிதப்ரவீத் ।

ஸா தத்ர ஹரிவாஹிநீ ।
புநரேவாங்கத: ப்ராஹ
தாந்ஹரீந்ஹரிஸத்தம: ॥
aṅgadasya vacaṡṡṛtvā
na kaṡcit kińcidabravīt ।
stimētēvābhavatsarvā
sā tatra harivāhinī ।
punarēvāṅgadaḥ prāha
tānharīnharisattamaḥ ॥
Hearing those words of Aṅgada, no one said anything.
The entire army of Vānaras simply stood still.
Again, Aṅgada, the best of Vānaras said to the Vānaras:

4.64.24 ஆ ஸர்வே பலவதாம் ஸ்ரேஷ்டா
பவந்தோ த்ருடவிக்ரமா: ।
வ்யபதேஸ்ய குலே ஜாதா:
பூஜிதாஸ்சாப்யபீக்ஷ்ணஸ: ॥
sarvē balavatāṃ ṡrēṣṭhā
bhavantō dṛḍhavikramāḥ ।
vyapadēṡya kulē jātāḥ
pūjitāṡcāpyabhīkṣṇaṡaḥ ॥
All of you are the best among
the strong, and unshakable in prowess.
You are born into blemishless families
and have received honors many a time.

4.64.25 ஆ ந ஹி வோ கமநே ஸங்க:
கதாசித்கஸ்யசித்பவேத் ।
ப்ருவத்வம் யஸ்ய யா ஸக்தி:
ப்லவநே ப்லவகர்ஷபா: ॥
na hi vō gamanē saṅgaḥ
kadācitkasyacitbhavēt ।
bruvadhvaṃ yasya yā ṡaktiḥ
plavanē plavagarṣabhāḥ ॥
None of you had any difficulty ever in your flight.
O bulls among Vānaras! Please, each one of you,
tell how much you can leap across!
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே ।
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே சதுஷ்ஷஷ்டிதமஸ்ஸர்க:
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē ।
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē catuṣṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ
Thus concludes the sixty fourth Sarga
in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
