tvāmapyupagataṃ tūrṇam
antarikṣaṃ mahākapē ।
kṣiptamindrēṇa tē vajram
kōpāviṣṭēna dhīmatā ॥
O great Vānara! (Seeing) you leap
into the sky suddenly, the sagacious
Indra was outraged and hurled the Vajra at you.

tatō hi nāmadhēyaṃ tē
hanumāniti kīrtyatam ॥
Then you fell on top of the mountain peak
when your left jaw was broken and
that is how you came to be known as Hanumān.
Hanuma means jaw.

Seeing you struck down thus,
the wind god, the vehicle of smells,
became very angry and froze himself
in all the three worlds.

With all the three worlds under shock,
the bewildered Dēvas, the lords of the worlds,
pacified the outraged Vāyu.

virujaṃ tvāṃ samīkṣya ca ।
sahasranētraḥ prītātmā
dadau tē varamuttamam ।
svacchandataṡca maraṇam
tavasyāditi vai prabhō ॥
Amazed at your being completely unhurt
from the strike of the Vajra,
the thousand-eyed was very pleased
and gave you the best of boons,
that death shall wait upon
your convenience, O lordly one!

ப்லவநே சாபி தத்ஸம: ॥
sa tvaṃ kēsariṇaḥ putraḥ
kṣētrajō bhīmavikramaḥ ।
mārutasyaurasaḥ putraḥ
tējasā cāpi tatsamaḥ ।
tvaṃ hi vāyusutō vatsa
plavanē cāpi tatsamaḥ ॥
Thus you, of formidable prowess,
are the son of Kēsari, being born to his wife,
and also the son of Vāyu, born of his power.
You are also an equal to him in power.
Being the son of Vāyu, my child,
you are also an equal to him in your leap.

dākṣyavikramasampannaḥ
kapirāja ivāparaḥ ॥
We are as good as dead now.
You, endowed richly with ability and prowess,
are like another king of Vānaras (Sugreeva)
for us at this time.

saṡailavanakānanā ।
trissaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivī
parikrāntā pradakṣiṇam ॥
My dear! I circumambulated the earth and
all of its mountains, Vanas and forests,
thrice seven times when Lord Vishṇu measured
the worlds with his three strides.
Thrice seven times is a poetic expression
for ‘twentyone’ times.

nirmathyamamṛtaṃ yābhiḥ
tadānīṃ nō mahadbalam ॥
Similarly, following the directive of the Dēvas,
I collected all the herbs that was used
to churn the Amṛt (out of the ocean).
Such is the great strength I used to possess then.

parihīnaparākramaḥ ।
sāmprataṃ kālamasmākam
bhavānsarvaguṇānvitaḥ ॥
But now I am old and my prowess is diminished.
At the present time you are the one among us
who is endowed with all the virtues and abilities.

plavatāmuttamō hyasi ।

O you of great prowess! You are
the best among all those who can leap!
The entire army of Vānaras like to
see your power. Unleash yourself!

laṅghayasva mahārṇavam ।
parā hi sarvabhūtānām
hanumanyā gatistava ॥
O tiger among Vānaras!
Get up! Cross the great ocean!
O Hanumān! Your speed is far above
that of all the other creatures.

hanumankimupēkṣasē ।
vikramasva mahāvēga
viṣṇustrīnvikramāniva ॥
All the apes are in despair;
how can you, O Hanumān, be indifferent?
Launch forth with your terrific speed,
as Vishnu did when he took the three strides!

tataḥ kapīnāmṛṣabhēṇa cōditaḥ
pratītavēgaḥ pavanātmajaḥ kapiḥ ।
praharṣayaṃstāṃ harivīravāhinīṃ
cakāra rūpaṃ mahadātmanastadā ॥
Then, urged by the bull among Vānaras,
the son of Vāyu, the Vānara of renowned speed,
to the delight of the army of Vānara Veeras
assumed a gigantic form of himself.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே ।
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே ஷட்ஷஷ்டிதமஸ்ஸர்க:
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē ।
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē ṣaṭṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ
