bhaviṣyāmyahamāṡitā ।
idaṃ hi mē mahatsattvam
cirasya vaṡamāgatam ॥
Today, after a long time, I shall have a full meal.
This gigantic creature has fallen
into my hands after all this time.

With this thought in her mind,
she pulled him by his shadow.
When the shadow was caught,

I feel the resistance of a strong force
like a great ship on the ocean caught in headwinds
and feel my prowess crippled.

Then, looking up and down and all about him,
the Vānara saw a huge creature
that had arisen from the salty ocean.

Seeing that creature with a crooked face,
the son of Vāyu thought,
‘This amazing looking creature must be
the one which catches one by the shadow,
which the king of Vānaras mentioned;
there is no doubt about it.’

increased his body to a huge size,
like a cloud in the monsoon season.

ghanarājīva garjantī
vānaraṃ samabhidravat ॥
Seeing the body of the great Vānara growing,
she opened her mouth that was
as deep as the nether world.
Thundering like a bank of clouds
she sprang upon the Vānara.

marmāṇi ca mahākapiḥ ॥
The great Vānara saw her huge gaping mouth,
that was as big as his body.
The astute one also took note of her vitals.

vajrasaṃhananaḥ kapiḥ ।
saṃkṣipya muhurātmānam
niṣpapāta mahābalaḥ ॥
Then the mighty strong Vānara
shrunk his body that was hard like a diamond
and threw himself into her gaping mouth.

The Siddhas and the Cāraṇas
saw him disappear into her mouth
like the moon gobbled by
Rāhu on a full moon day.

Then, tearing her vitals apart with
his sharp nails, the Vānara came out
in a flash with the speed of thought.

dākṣiṇyēna nipātya ca ।
sa kapipravarō vēgāt
vavṛdhē punarātmavān ।
hṛtahṛtsā hanumatā
papāta vidhurāmbhasi ॥
Thwarting her with his
keen observation, courage and knack,
that best of the Vānaras, of stable mind,
grew in size again very quickly.
Her heart wrested by Hanumān,
she convulsed and fell into the sea.

Seeing Simhika fall instantly
into the sea killed by the Vānara,
the creatures that moved in the sky
said to the foremost of the Vānaras:

mahatsattvaṃ tvayā hatam ।
sādhayārthamabhiprētam
ariṣṭaṃ plavatāṃ vara ॥
O foremost of the Vānaras!
What you have done now is terrific.
The mighty creature is killed by you.
May everything bode well for you in
achieving the object that is dear to your heart!

saḥ karmasu na sīdati ॥
O lord of Vānaras! He who commands,
like you, these four qualities of
courage, keen eye, smartness and knack,
will never fail in his undertakings.

The Vānara, who was worthy of honor,
being thus praised by them,
rose up into the sky and went on,
like (Garuḍa) who feeds on snakes,
sure of gaining his object.

At the end of (the journey of) one hundred Yōjanas,
having almost reached the other shore,
he looked around and saw rows of Vanas.

sāgarasya ca patnīnām
mukhānyapi vilōkayan ।
sa mahāmēghasaṅkāṡam
samīkṣyātmānamātmavān ।
nirundhantamivākāṡam
cakāra matimān matim ॥
He saw the ocean, its coastline,
the trees that grew on it,
and the mouths of the rivers
that joined the sea.
Realizing that his body looked
like a huge cloud that blocked the sky,
he, who was careful, started pondering.

mama dṛṣṭvaiva rākṣasāḥ ।
mayi kautūhalaṃ kuryaḥ
iti mēnē mahākapiḥ ॥
‘The Rākshasas, on seeing my
huge body and great speed,
will become suspicious’,
thought that great Vānara.

Then he shrunk his mountainous body,
regained his simple nature,
gave up his haughtiness and
became his normal self.

Making his form considerably small,
Hanumān stood in his normal form,
like Vishṇu did, after deflating
the power of Bali by taking the
three strides (measuring the three worlds).

Reaching the farther shore and
regaining his wonted state,
he who could take many a charming guise
and whom none could assail,
checked himself, and focused on his object.

Thus that Mahātma, who resembled
the crest of a great mountain,
landed on the crest of rich Lamba mountain,
whose amazing crests covered with
Kētaka, Uddālaka and coconut trees
resembled Mahēndra mountain.

Thus reaching the shore of the ocean,
landing on the mountain, and
seeing the city of Laṅkā on the
top of that great mountain,
the Vānara discarded the form that
frightened the beasts and the birds.

sa sāgaraṃ dānavapannagāyutaṃ
balēna vikramya mahōrmimālinam ।
nipatya tīrē ca mahōdadhēstadā
dadarṡa laṅkāmamarāvatīmiva ॥
Having crossed the ocean by his sheer strength,
which was draped in billows and
peopled by Dānavas and Pannagas,
he thus landed on the sea-shore and
looked at Laṅkā that resembled Amarāvati.
Amarāvati is the capital of Indra.

saṃkṣipya muhurātmānam
niṣpapāta mahābalaḥ ॥
Then the mighty strong Vānara
shrunk his body that was hard like a diamond
and threw himself into her gaping mouth.

like the moon gobbled by
Rāhu on a full moon day.

in a flash with the speed of thought.

hṛtahṛtsā hanumatā
papāta vidhurāmbhasi ॥
Thwarting her with his
keen observation, courage and knack,
that best of the Vānaras, of stable mind,
grew in size again very quickly.
Her heart wrested by Hanumān,
she convulsed and fell into the sea.

O foremost of the Vānaras!
What you have done now is terrific.
The mighty creature is killed by you.
May everything bode well for you in
achieving the object that is dear to your heart!

will never fail in his undertakings.

The Vānara, who was worthy of honor,

rose up into the sky and went on,
like (Garuḍa) who feeds on snakes,
sure of gaining his object.

he looked around and saw rows of Vanas.

He saw the ocean, its coastline,
the trees that grew on it,
and the mouths of the rivers
that joined the sea.
Realizing that his body looked
like a huge cloud that blocked the sky,
he, who was careful, started pondering.

‘The Rākshasas, on seeing my
huge body and great speed,
will become suspicious’,
thought that great Vānara.

Then he shrunk his mountainous body,

gave up his haughtiness and

Making his form considerably small,
Hanumān stood in his normal form,
like Vishṇu did, after deflating
the power of Bali by taking the
three strides (measuring the three worlds).

regaining his wonted state,
he who could take many a charming guise
and whom none could assail,
checked himself, and focused on his object.

Thus that Mahātma, who resembled
the crest of a great mountain,
landed on the crest of rich Lamba mountain,
whose amazing crests covered with
Kētaka, Uddālaka and coconut trees
resembled Mahēndra mountain.

tatastu samprāpya samudratīraṃ
samīkṣya laṅkāṃ girivaryamūrdhni ।
kapistu tasninnipapāta parvatē
vidhūya rūpaṃ vyathayanmṛgadvijān ॥
Thus reaching the shore of the ocean,
landing on the mountain, and
seeing the city of Laṅkā on the
top of that great mountain,
the Vānara discarded the form that
frightened the beasts and the birds.

பலேந விக்ரம்ய மஹோர்மிமாலிநம் ।

sa sāgaraṃ dānavapannagāyutaṃ
balēna vikramya mahōrmimālinam ।
nipatya tīrē ca mahōdadhēstadā
dadarṡa laṅkāmamarāvatīmiva ॥
Having crossed the ocean by his sheer strength,
which was draped in billows and
peopled by Dānavas and Pannagas,
he thus landed on the sea-shore and
looked at Laṅkā that resembled Amarāvati.
Amarāvati is the capital of Indra.
