மம ராஜ்ஞஸ்ச தீமத: ॥
caturṇāmēva hi gatiḥ
vānarāṇāṃ mahātmanām ।
vāliputrasya nīlasya
mama rājñaṡca dhīmataḥ ॥
Only four of us, among all the great Vānaras,
the son of Vali, Neela, myself and
the sagacious king can even come over here!

yadi jīvati vā na vā ।
tatraiva cintayiṣyāmi
dṛṣṭvā tāṃ janakātmajām ॥
I shall first focus on finding out
whether Vaidēhi is alive or not.
I shall think about the further (course of action)
after seeing her, the daughter of Janaka.

muhūrtaṃ kapikuñjaraḥ ।
giriṡṛṅgē sthitastasmin
rāmasyābhyudayē rataḥ ॥
Standing on the mountain-peak,
the great Vānara thought through for a while,
fully dedicated to the welfare of Rāma.

na ṡakyā rakṣasāṃ purī ।
pravēṣṭuṃ rākṣasairguptā
krūrairbalasamanvitaiḥ ॥
It would not be possible for me
to enter, in this form of mine,
this city of Rākshasas, which is guarded
by the cruel and powerful Rākshasas.

balavantaṡca rākṣasāḥ ।
vañcanīyā mayā sarvē
jānakīṃ parimārgatā ॥
In my search for Jānaki,
I must but trick these Rākshasas,
for they possess formidable energy,
great valor and strength.

lakṣyālakṣyēṇa rūpēṇa
rātrau laṅkā purī mayā ।
pravēṣṭuṃ prāptakālaṃ mē
kṛtyaṃ sādhayituṃ mahat ॥
Night is the proper time for me
to enter the city of Laṅkā,
taking a form that is barely visible,
in order to achieve my serious mission.

viniṡṡvasya muhurmuhuḥ ॥
Seeing such a city that was
invincible even for the Suras and the Asuras,
Hanumān thought it through (carefully),
sighing repeatedly.

What can I do to find
Maithili, the daughter of Janaka,
without being seen by Rāvaṇa,
the evil-minded king of Rākshasas!

How to ensure that the goal of Rāma,

How shall I get to see the
daughter of Janaka one-on-one, with none around?

தேஸகாலவிரோதிதா: ।
விக்லபம் தூதமாஸாத்ய

dēṡakālavirōdhitāḥ ।
viklabaṃ dūtamāsādya
tamaḥ sūryōdayē yathā ॥
Things that are all but set to fructify
can get ruined, like darkness by the sunrise,
by a nervous envoy who messes up
the timing and posturing.

நிஸ்சிதாபி ந ஸோபதே ।
காதயந்தி ஹி கார்யாணி

niṡcitāpi na ṡōbhatē ।
ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi
dūtāḥ paṇḍitamāninaḥ ॥
Even a firmly made up mind fumbles
against the vicissitudes of gains and losses.
An envoy who is overconfident,
will but ruin everything.

vaiklabyaṃ na kathaṃ bhavēt ।
laṅghanaṃ ca samudrasya
kathaṃ nu na vṛthā bhavēt ॥
How to ensure that nothing is wrecked?
How to make sure that I do not become nervous?
How to make sure that my crossing of the ocean
does not become a wasted effort?

ராமஸ்ய விதிதாத்மந: ।
பவேத்வ்யர்தமிதம் கார்யம்

rāmasya viditātmanaḥ ।
bhavēdvyarthamidaṃ kāryam
rāvaṇānarthamicchataḥ ॥
This entire mission of Rāma,
who clearly aims in his mind,
the destruction of Rāvaṇa,
would be defeated if
I am seen by the Rākshasas.

avijñātēna rākṣasaiḥ ।
api rākṣasarūpēṇa
kimutānyēna kēnacit ॥
It is impossible to remain
undetected by the Rākshasas
even by assuming the guise of a Rākshasa,
what to say of assuming other forms?

சரேதிதி மதிர்மம ।
ந ஹ்யஸ்த்யவிதிதம் கிஞ்சித்

vāyurapyatra nājñātaḥ
carēditi matirmama ।
na hyastyaviditaṃ kiñcit
rākṣasānāṃ balīyasām ॥
It seems to me that even the
wind cannot move here undetected,
for there is nothing that happens
unknown to these powerful Rākshasas.

svēna rūpēṇa saṃvṛtaḥ ।
vināṡamupayāsyāmi
bharturarthaṡca hīyatē ॥
If I remain here in my natural form,
I would be inviting disaster and
my master’s work would also get ruined.
