ரஜந்யாம் ஹ்ரஸ்வதாம் கத: ।
லங்காமபிபதிஷ்யாமி
ராகவஸ்யார்தஸித்தயே ॥
tadahaṃ svēna rūpēṇa
rajanyāṃ hrasvatāṃ gataḥ ।
laṅkāmabhipatiṣyāmi
rāghavasyārthasiddhayē ॥
Considering everything,
I shall retain my own,
albeit a miniature, form,
and go full force into Laṅkā at night
to accomplish Rāghava’s purpose.

vicinvan bhavanaṃ sarvam
drakṣyāmi janakātmajām ॥
I shall find the daughter of Janaka by
entering the unapproachable city of Rāvaṇa at night,
and by thoroughly searching his palace.

Having thought through thus,
Hanumān, the valorous Vānara,
excited about finding Vaidēhi,
waited for the sun to set.

After the sun had set and
when it became night,
the son of Vāyu shrunk
his body to the size of a house cat,
looking cute and winsome.

stambhaiḥ kāńcanarājataiḥ ।
ṡātakumbhamayairjālaiḥ
gandharvanagarōpamām ।
saptabhaumāṣṭabhaumaiṡca
sa dadarṡa mahāpurīm ।
talaiḥ sphāṭikasaṃkīrṇaiḥ
kārtasvaravibhūṣitaiḥ ॥
He then saw that great city with
extensive rows of lofty mansions,
its pillars of gold and silver,
its casements made of gold,
its seven- and eight-storied mansions
decorated with crystals everywhere
and surfaces treated with gold ornaments,
looking like a city of Gandharvas.

talaiḥ ṡuṡubhirē tāni
bhavanānyatra rakṣasām ॥
The exteriors of mansions of Rākshasas shone
with meshwork of pearls and were decorated with
a variety of ornaments made of lazulite and gems.

laṅkāmudyōtayāmāsuḥ
sarvataḥ samalaṅkṛtām ॥
With gateways made of gold,
Laṅkā, of Rākshasas, was glittering
everywhere with superb decorations.

acintyāmadbhutākārāṃ
dṛṣṭvā laṅkāṃ mahākapiḥ ।
āsīdviṣaṇṇō hṛṣṭaṡca
vaidēhyā darṡanōtsukaḥ ॥
The great Vānara, who was eager to see Vaidēhi,
was at once sad and glad as he looked
at that unimaginably amazing city of Laṅkā.

மஹார்ஹஜாம்பூநதஜாலதோரணாம் ।
யஸஸ்விநீம் ராவணபாஹுபாலிதாம்
க்ஷபாசரைர்பீமபலை: ஸமாவ்ருதாம் ॥
sa pāṇḍurāviddhavimānamālinīṃ
mahārhajāmbūnadajālatōraṇām ।
yaṡasvinīṃ rāvaṇabāhupālitāṃ
kṣapācarairbhīmabalaiḥ samāvṛtām ॥
He saw that famous city (of Laṅkā) with
its rows of white towers nestled into each other
and gateways filled with exquisite meshwork of gold,
protected by the strong arm of Rāvaṇa and
guarded on all sides by Rākshasas of formidable strength. This Ṡlōka seems to be unauthentic; its meter and texture do not agree with the style of Vālmeeki. And also, this Ṡlōka does not form a complete sentence, appearing to be a piece plucked from another series of Ṡlōkas of a different version of Rāmāyaṇa.

தாராகணைர்மத்யகதோ விராஜந் ।

உத்திஷ்டதே நைகஸஹஸ்ரரஸ்மி: ॥
candrō'pi sācivyamivāsya kurvan
tārāgaṇairmadhyagatō virājan ।
jyōtsnāvitānēna vitatya lōkam
uttiṣṭhatē naikasahasraraṡmi: ॥
The moon of thousands of rays also arose,
shining and surrounded by constellations of stars
covering the entire world
with the canopy of bright moonlight,
as if he meant to assist him (Hanumān).

உத்கச்சமாநம் வ்யவபாஸமாநம் ।

போப்லூயமாநம் ஸரஸீவ ஹம்ஸம் ॥
ṡaṅkhaprabhaṃ kṣīramṛṇālavarṇam
udgacchamānaṃ vyavabhāsamānam ।
dadarṡa candraṃ sa haripravīraḥ
pōplūyamānaṃ sarasīva haṃsam ॥
To the great Vānara warrior,
the uniquely splendid rising moon
who was bright like a conch-shell
and white like milk and lotus fiber
looked like a Haṃsa gliding on a lake.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே த்விதீயஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē dvitīyassargaḥ॥
Thus concludes the second Sarga
in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
