Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 3
In this Sarga, Hanumān continues to reflect that the city of Laṅkā is difficult to enter and only a few of the Vānaras can ever reach that place. But then, he comforts himself by thinking of the extraordinary prowess of Rāma and Lakshmaṇa.
The city of Laṅkā notices the intruder. Taking the form of a woman, the city blocks his way, standing up to him, right in front of him. She asks about Hanumān and his purpose for coming to Laṅkā. Hanumān teases her by saying that he had come to Laṅkā just for a visit.
Laṅkā, in the form of woman tells him that no one can enter the city without first subduing her and then, making a loud shout, hits him with her palm. Hanumān deals back with her in kind, and she falls down convulsing.
She tells Hanumān about the curse laid upon the city by Lord Brahma that it is doomed for destruction when a Vānara enters the city.

purīṃ rāvaṇapālitām ॥
Hanumān, son of the Wind-god,
a smart one of immense strength and
an elephant among Vānaras,
commanded all his strength,
and made his entry at night
into the city of Laṅkā ruled by Rāvaṇa,
with its many lovely woods and (pools) of water,
situated on the Lamba mountain,
which, with its high peaks,
resembled a huge cloud.

pāṇḍuradvāratōraṇām ।
bhujagācaritāṃ guptām
ṡubhāṃ bhōgavatīmiva ।
tāṃ sa vidyudghanākīrṇām
jyōtirmārganiṣēvitām ।
mandamārutasańcārām
yathēndrasyāmarāvatīm ।
ṡātakumbhēna mahatā
prākārēṇābhisaṃvṛtām ।
kiṅkiṇījālaghōṣābhiḥ
patākābhiralaṅkṛtām ।
āsā dya sahasā hṛṣṭaḥ
prākāramabhipēdivān ॥
It was adorned with buildings
that resembled the post-monsoon clouds.
It was roaring like an ocean and was
served by the breeze from the ocean.
It was strong like the city of Viṭapāvati
(protected by) well-maintained armies.
Its beautiful, white arches on the
white gateways were supported by statues of elephants.
It was beautiful like the city of Bhōgavati
that was inhabited and guarded by serpents.
(High on the top of a mountain),
attracting soft breezes and clouds of lightning,
it resembled Amarāvati, the city of Indra.
It was enclosed by huge ramparts of gold.
It was adorned with banners and buntings,
resounding with the tinkling of rows of bells.
Without any delay and in high spirits,
he approached the ramparts of the city.

rājatāmalapāṇḍuraiḥ ।
vaiḍhūryakṛtasōpānaiḥ
sphāṭikāntarapāṃsubhiḥ ।
cārusaṃjavanōpētaiḥ
khamivōtpatitaiḥ ṡubhaiḥ ।
krauńcabarhiṇasaṅghuṣṭaiḥ
rājahaṃsa niṣēvitaiḥ ।
tūryābharaṇanirghōṣaiḥ
sarvataḥ pratināditām ।
vasvaukasārāpratimām
tāṃ vīkṣya nagarīṃ tataḥ ।< br>khamivōtpatituṃ kāmām
jaharṣa hanumān kapiḥ ॥
He was completely taken by astonishment
as he looked all around the city.
The clean and silvery-white platforms
by the golden doors (of the houses)
were made of lazulite,
decorated with golden statues of elephants
and their surfaces tessellated
with diamonds, crystals, pearls and gems.
Its houses, rising high into the sky,
with steps (leading to them) made of lazulite,
interiors sprinkled with crystal sparkle,
bowers that were exotic,
were filled with Krouncas, peacocks and royal swans,
and reverberated with the sounds of trumpets
and the tinkling of ornaments everywhere.
Hanumān, the Vānara was tickled to
see that city of Laṅkā, which seemed
to long to fly into the sky,
resembling the city of Vasvoukasāra.

tāṃ samīkṣya purīṃ ramyām
rākṣasādhipatēḥ ṡubhām ।
anuttamāmṛddhiyutām
cintayāmāsa vīryavān ॥
Upon seeing that beautiful,
opulent, auspicious and unequalled
city of the lord of Rākshasas,
the valorous one reflected:

ஸக்யா தர்ஷயிதும் பலாத் ।

rakṣitā rāvaṇabalaiḥ
udyatāyudhadhāribhiḥ ॥
This city, which is protected by
the well-armed forces of Rāvaṇa
cannot be conquered by anyone by might.

ஸுஷேணஸ்ய மஹாகபே: ।

suṣēṇasya mahākapēḥ ।
prasiddhēyaṃ bhavēdbhūmiḥ
maindadvividayōrapi ॥
Kumuda, Aṅgada, Sushēṇa the great Vānara,
Mainda and Dwivida, may be able to approach this land.

ஹரேஸ்ச குஸபர்வண: ।

harēṡca kuṡaparvaṇaḥ ।
ṛkṣasya kapimukhyasya
mama caiva gatirbhavēt ॥
Only the son of the sun (Sugreeva),
Kuṡaparva the Vānara,
Ṛksha, the chief of Vānaras
and I can reach here.

ராகவஸ்ய பராக்ரமம் ।

samīkṣya tu mahābāhōḥ
rāghavasya parākramam ।
lakṣmaṇasya ca vikrāntam
abhavat prītimān kapiḥ ॥
However, the Vanara found comfort, thinking of
the prowess of Rāghava of mighty arm
and the prowess of Lakshmaṇa.

kōṣṭhāgārāvataṃsakām ।
yantrāgārastanīmṛddhām
pramadāmiva bhūṣitām ।
tāṃ naṣṭatimirāṃ dīptaiḥ
bhāsvaraiṡca mahāgṛhaiḥ ।
nagarīṃ rākṣasēndrasya
sa dadarṡa mahākapiḥ ॥
The great Vānara beheld
that city of the lord of Rākshasas
whose darkness of the night was dispelled
by the brightly lit humongous mansions.
The city looked like an opulent woman
with the luster of gems for her garment,
storehouses for her ear-ornaments and
the workshops of machinery for her breasts.

nagarī svēna rūpēṇa
dadarṡa pavanātmajam ॥
The city, taking her native form,
noticed that tiger among Vānaras,
the son of Vāyu of immense strength, entering.

laṅkā rāvaṇapālitā ।
svayamēvōtthitā tatra
vikṛtānanadarṡanā ॥
Seeing that valorous Vānara,
Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa,
raised herself then and there
with an ugly and terrible looking face.

Standing right in front of
that valorous Vānara, the son of Vāyu,
she let off a tremendous shout
and said to that son of Vāyu:

iha prāptō vanālaya ।
kathayasvēha yattattvam
yāvatprāṇā dharanti tē ॥
O Vana dweller! Who are you?
What is the purpose that brought you here?
Tell me everything as it is,
if you wish to hold on to your life!

pravēṣṭuṃ vānara tvayā ।
rakṣitā rāvaṇabalaiḥ
abhiguptā samantataḥ ॥
It is impossible for you to enter this Laṅkā,
which is protected by Rāvaṇa’s forces
placed all around it.

ஹநுமாநக்ரத: ஸ்திதாம் ॥
atha tāmabravīdvīrō
hanumānagrataḥ sthitām ॥
Thereupon the heroic Hanumān said to her,

நிர்பர்த்ஸயஸி தாருணா ॥
kathayiṣyāmi tē tattvam
yanmāṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ।
kā tvaṃ virūpanayanā
puradvārē'vatiṣṭhasi ।
kimarthaṃ cāpi māṃ ruddhvā
nirbhartsayasi dāruṇā ॥
I will tell you everything,
but who are you, asking me thus?
Who are you, with crooked eyes,
standing at the gateway of the city?
O frightful one! Why are you trying
to block my way and threaten me?

உவாச வசநம் க்ருத்தா

laṅkā sā kāmarūpiṇī ।
uvāca vacanaṃ kruddhā
paruṣaṃ pavanātmajam ॥
Hearing those words of Hanumān,
Laṅkā, who can take any form at will,
became angry and said these
harsh words to the son of Vāyu:

5.3.28 ஈ அஹம் ராக்ஷஸராஜஸ்ய
ராவணஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
ஆஜ்ஞாப்ரதீக்ஷா துர்தர்ஷா
ரக்ஷாமி நகரீமிமாம் ॥
ahaṃ rākṣasarājasya
rāvaṇasya mahātmanaḥ ।
ājńāpratīkṣā durdharṣā
rakṣāmi nagarīmimām ॥
I, whom none can assail,
take orders from the mighty Rāvaṇa,
the King of Rākshasas
and protect this city.

ராஜஹம்ஸ நிஷேவிதை: ।
தூர்யாபரணநிர்கோஷை:
ஸர்வத: ப்ரதிநா�® �ிதாம் ।
வஸ்வௌகஸாராப்ரதிமாம்
தாம் வீக்ஷ்ய நகரீம் தத: ।
கமிவோத்பதிதும் காமாம்
ஜஹர்ஷ ஹநுமாந் கபி: ॥
vismayāviṣṭahṛdayaḥ
purīmālōkya sarvataḥ ।
jāmbūnadamayairdvāraiḥ
vaiḍūryakṛtavēdikaiḥ ।
vajrasphaṭikamuktābhiḥ
maṇikuṭṭimabhūṣitaiḥ ।
taptahāṭakaniryūhai
rājatāmalapāṇḍuraiḥ ।
vaiḍhūryakṛtasōpānaiḥ
sphāṭikāntarapāṃsubhiḥ ।
cārusaṃjavanōpētaiḥ
khamivōtpatitaiḥ ṡubhaiḥ ।
krauńcabarhiṇasaṅghuṣṭaiḥ
rājahaṃsa niṣēvitaiḥ ।
tūryābharaṇanirghōṣaiḥ
sarvataḥ pratināditām ।
vasvaukasārāpratimām
tāṃ vīkṣya nagarīṃ tataḥ ।< br>khamivōtpatituṃ kāmām
jaharṣa hanumān kapiḥ ॥
He was completely taken by astonishment
as he looked all around the city.
The clean and silvery-white platforms
by the golden doors (of the houses)
were made of lazulite,
decorated with golden statues of elephants
and their surfaces tessellated
with diamonds, crystals, pearls and gems.
Its houses, rising high into the sky,
with steps (leading to them) made of lazulite,
interiors sprinkled with crystal sparkle,
bowers that were exotic,
were filled with Krouncas, peacocks and royal swans,
and reverberated with the sounds of trumpets
and the tinkling of ornaments everywhere.
Hanumān, the Vānara was tickled to
see that city of Laṅkā, which seemed
to long to fly into the sky,
resembling the city of Vasvoukasāra.

ராக்ஷஸாதிபதே: ஸுபாம் ।
அநுத்தமாம்ருத்தியுதாம்
சிந்தயாமாஸ வீர்யவாந் ॥
tāṃ samīkṣya purīṃ ramyām
rākṣasādhipatēḥ ṡubhām ।
anuttamāmṛddhiyutām
cintayāmāsa vīryavān ॥
Upon seeing that beautiful,
opulent, auspicious and unequalled
city of the lord of Rākshasas,
the valorous one reflected:

ஸக்யா தர்ஷயிதும் பலாத் ।
ரக்ஷிதா ராவணபலை:
உத்யதாயுததாரிபி: ॥

ṡakyā dharṣayituṃ balāt ।
rakṣitā rāvaṇabalaiḥ
udyatāyudhadhāribhiḥ ॥
This city, which is protected by
the well-armed forces of Rāvaṇa
cannot be conquered by anyone by might.

ஸுஷேணஸ்ய மஹாகபே: ।
ப்ரஸித்தேயம் பவேத்பூமி:

kumudāṅgadayōrvāpi
suṣēṇasya mahākapēḥ ।
prasiddhēyaṃ bhavēdbhūmiḥ
maindadvividayōrapi ॥
Kumuda, Aṅgada, Sushēṇa the great Vānara,
Mainda and Dwivida, may be able to approach this land.

5.3.16 ஈ விவஸ்வதஸ்தநூஜஸ்ய
ஹரேஸ்ச குஸபர்வண: ।
ருக்ஷஸ்ய கபிமுக்யஸ்ய
மம சைவ கதிர்பவேத் ॥
vivasvatastanūjasya
harēṡca kuṡaparvaṇaḥ ।
ṛkṣasya kapimukhyasya
mama caiva gatirbhavēt ॥
Only the son of the sun (Sugreeva),
Kuṡaparva the Vānara,
Ṛksha, the chief of Vānaras
and I can reach here.

5.3.17 ஈ ஸமீக்ஷ்ய து மஹாபாஹோ:
ராகவஸ்ய பராக்ரமம் ।
லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ய ச விக்ராந்தம்
அபவத் ப்ரீதிமாந் கபி: ॥
samīkṣya tu mahābāhōḥ
rāghavasya parākramam ।
lakṣmaṇasya ca vikrāntam
abhavat prītimān kapiḥ ॥
However, the Vanara found comfort, thinking of
the prowess of Rāghava of mighty arm
and the prowess of Lakshmaṇa.

தாம் நஷ்டதிமிராம் தீப்தை:
பாஸ்வரைஸ்ச மஹாக்ருஹை: ।
நகரீம் ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய
ஸ ததர்ஸ மஹாகபி: ॥
tāṃ ratnavasanōpētām
kōṣṭhāgārāvataṃsakām ।
yantrāgārastanīmṛddhām
pramadāmiva bhūṣitām ।
tāṃ naṣṭatimirāṃ dīptaiḥ
bhāsvaraiṡca mahāgṛhaiḥ ।
nagarīṃ rākṣasēndrasya
sa dadarṡa mahākapiḥ ॥
The great Vānara beheld
that city of the lord of Rākshasas
whose darkness of the night was dispelled
by the brightly lit humongous mansions.
The city looked like an opulent woman
with the luster of gems for her garment,
storehouses for her ear-ornaments and
the workshops of machinery for her breasts.

ப்ரவிஸந்தம் மஹாபலம் ।
நகரீ ஸ்வேந ரூபேண

praviṡantaṃ mahābalam ।
nagarī svēna rūpēṇa
dadarṡa pavanātmajam ॥
The city, taking her native form,
noticed that tiger among Vānaras,
the son of Vāyu of immense strength, entering.

லங்கா ராவணபாலிதா ।
ஸ்வயமேவோத்திதா தத்ர

sā taṃ harivaraṃ dṛṣṭvā
laṅkā rāvaṇapālitā ।
svayamēvōtthitā tatra
vikṛtānanadarṡanā ॥
Seeing that valorous Vānara,
Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa,
raised herself then and there
with an ugly and terrible looking face.

வாயுஸூநோரதிஷ்டத ।
முஞ்சமாநா மஹாநாதம்

vāyusūnōratiṣṭhata ।
muńcamānā mahānādam
abravītpavanātmajam ॥
Standing right in front of
that valorous Vānara, the son of Vāyu,
she let off a tremendous shout
and said to that son of Vāyu:

5.3.23 ஈ கஸ்த்வம் கேந ச கார்யேண
இஹ ப்ராப்தோ வநாலய ।
கதயஸ்வேஹ யத்தத்த்வம்
யாவத்ப்ராணா தரந்தி தே ॥
kastvaṃ kēna ca kāryēṇa
iha prāptō vanālaya ।
kathayasvēha yattattvam
yāvatprāṇā dharanti tē ॥
O Vana dweller! Who are you?
What is the purpose that brought you here?
Tell me everything as it is,
if you wish to hold on to your life!
5.3.24 அ

5.3.24 ஈ ந ஸக்யம் கல்வியம் லங்கா
ப்ரவேஷ்டும் வாநர த்வயா ।
ரக்ஷிதா ராவணபலை:
அபிகுப்தா ஸமந்தத: ॥
na ṡakyaṃ khalviyaṃ laṅkā
pravēṣṭuṃ vānara tvayā ।
rakṣitā rāvaṇabalaiḥ
abhiguptā samantataḥ ॥
It is impossible for you to enter this Laṅkā,
which is protected by Rāvaṇa’s forces
placed all around it.
5.3.25 அ
5.3.25 ஆ அத தாமப்ரவீத்வீரோ
ஹநுமாநக்ரத: ஸ்திதாம் ॥
atha tāmabravīdvīrō
hanumānagrataḥ sthitām ॥
Thereupon the heroic Hanumān said to her,
who stood right in front of him:

யந்மாம் த்வம் பரிப்ருச்சஸி ।

கிமர்தம் சாபி மாம் ருத்த்வா
நிர்பர்த்ஸயஸி தாருணா ॥
kathayiṣyāmi tē tattvam
yanmāṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ।
kā tvaṃ virūpanayanā
puradvārē'vatiṣṭhasi ।
kimarthaṃ cāpi māṃ ruddhvā
nirbhartsayasi dāruṇā ॥
I will tell you everything,
but who are you, asking me thus?
Who are you, with crooked eyes,
standing at the gateway of the city?
O frightful one! Why are you trying
to block my way and threaten me?

5.3.27 ஈ ஹநுமத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா
லங்கா ஸா காமரூபிணீ ।
உவாச வசநம் க்ருத்தா
பருஷம் பவநாத்மஜம் ॥
hanumadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā
laṅkā sā kāmarūpiṇī ।
uvāca vacanaṃ kruddhā
paruṣaṃ pavanātmajam ॥
Hearing those words of Hanumān,
Laṅkā, who can take any form at will,
became angry and said these
harsh words to the son of Vāyu:

5.3.28 ஈ அஹம் ராக்ஷஸராஜஸ்ய
ராவணஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
ஆஜ்ஞாப்ரதீக்ஷா துர்தர்ஷா
ரக்ஷாமி நகரீமிமாம் ॥
ahaṃ rākṣasarājasya
rāvaṇasya mahātmanaḥ ।
ājńāpratīkṣā durdharṣā
rakṣāmi nagarīmimām ॥
I, whom none can assail,
take orders from the mighty Rāvaṇa,
the King of Rākshasas
and protect this city.
