adya prāṇaiḥ parityaktaḥ
svapsyasē nihatō mayā ॥
It is impossible for you to
enter the city ignoring me.
Today, struck by me, you
will go to sleep only
after giving up your life.

Hearing those words of Laṅkā,
Hanumān, a great Vānara and son of Vāyu,
stood firm like a mountain,
ready (for any consequence whatsoever).

Then the savvy and powerful bull among Vānaras,
looked at that woman of revolting form and said:

ityarthamiha saṃprāptaḥ
paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi mē ॥
I am just curious.
I came here with the idea of
seeing the city of Laṅkā
with all its turrets, ramparts
and arched gateways.

sarvatō gṛhamukhyāni
draṣṭumāgamanaṃ hi mē ॥
I came here to see everything,
the Vanas, the pleasances,
the forests and the important mansions.

bhūya ēva punarvākyam
babhāṣē paruṣākṣaram ॥
Hearing those words of his,
Laṅkā, who could take any form at will,
said these words again in a harsh voice:

ராக்ஷஸேஸ்வரபாலிதாம் ।

rākṣasēṡvarapālitāṃ ।
na ṡakyamadya tē draṣṭum
purīyaṃ vānarādhama ॥
You need to subdue me first,
before you can see this city
that is ruled by the lord of Rākshasas,
O evil-minded wretched Vānara!

தாமுவாச நிஸாசரீம் ।
த்ருஷ்ட்வா புரீமிமாம் பத்ரே

tāmuvāca niṡācarīm ।
dṛṣṭvā purīmimāṃ bhadrē
punaryāsyē yathāgatam ॥
Then that tiger among Vānaras
told the Rākshasi:
‘Having seen the City, good dame,
I shall go back as I came.’

talēna vānaraṡrēṣṭham
tāḍayāmāsa vēgitā ॥
Thereupon, Laṅkā let off a frightful yell
and without losing a moment,
struck the great Vānara with her palm.

nanāda sumahānādam
vīryavān pavanātmajaḥ ॥
Then that valorous son of Vāyu,
a tiger among Vānaras
struck her back hard,
letting off a loud yell.

vāmahastasya sō'ṅgulīḥ ।
muṣṭinā''bhijaghānainām
hanumān krōdhamūrchitaḥ ।
strī cēti manyamānēna
nātikrōdhaḥ svayaṃ kṛtaḥ ॥
Then Hanumān, losing himself in anger,
folded his fingers and struck her with his fist.
However, he could not be too angry (with her),
considering that she was a woman.

vikṛtānanadarṡanā ॥
The Rākshasi, her body
reeling under his blow,
fell on the ground immediately
with her crooked looking face.

tāṃ dṛṣṭvā vinipātitām ।
kṛpāṃ cakāra tējasvī
manyamānaḥ striyaṃ tu tām ॥
Then the powerful and perspicacious Hanumān,
seeing her thus fall down,
took pity on her considering that she was a woman.

uvācāgarvitaṃ vākyam
hanūmantaṃ plavaṅgamam ॥
And then, the heavily convulsing Laṅkā
addressed Hanumān, the Vānara,
in a humble and faltering voice:

trāyasva harisattama ।
samayē saumya tiṣṭhanti
sattvavantō mahābalāḥ ॥
Have pity on me, O you of the mighty arm;
spare me, O great Vānara!
O gentle one! People of power and great strength
never cross the boundary, will they!

I am defeated by your prowess,
O Veera of immense strength!

varadānaṃ yathā mama ॥
O lord of Vānaras! Listen,
I will tell you what will happen
according to the boon given once upon a time
to me by (Brahma), the Self-Emergent:

விக்ரமாத்வஸமாநயேத் ।

vikramādvaṡamānayēt ।
tadā tvayā hi vijñēyam
rakṣasāṃ bhayamāgatam ॥
When a certain Vānara
subdues you by his prowess,
then you shall know that the time
has come for the Rākshasas to be worried.

prāptō'dya tava darṡanāt ।
svayaṃbhū vihitaḥ satyō
na tasyāsti vyatikramaḥ ॥
That time has come, my dear,
with my seeing you today.
Whatever is laid down
by the Self-Emergent shall come true;
there is no getting away from it.

rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ ।
rakṣasāṃ caiva sarvēṣām
vināṡaḥ samupāgataḥ ॥
The (time for the) destruction
of the evil-minded king Rāvaṇa
and of all the Rākshasas has come,
because of (the abduction of) Seetā.

purīṃ rāvaṇapālitām ।
vidhatsva sarvakāryāṇi
yāni yānīha vāñchasi ॥
So, O great Vānara,
you may enter the city ruled by Rāvaṇa,
and do whatsoever you wish to do.

விமார்க ஸர்வத்ர கதோ யதாஸுகம் ॥
praviṡya ṡāpōpahatāṃ harīṡvara
ṡubhāṃ purīṃ rākṣasamukhyapālitām ।
yadṛcchayā tvaṃ janakātmajāṃ satīṃ
vimārga sarvatra gatō yathāsukham ॥
O best of Vānaras! You may (now)
enter this beautiful city
ruled by the king of Rākshasas,
which is doomed by a curse,
and search comfortably and as you please
for the daughter of Janaka, a devoted wife.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே த்ருதீயஸ்ஸர்க:॥

ஹநூமந்தம் ப்லவங்கமம் ॥
tatō vai bhṛṡasaṃvignā
laṅkā sā gadgadākṣaram ।
uvācāgarvitaṃ vākyam
hanūmantaṃ plavaṅgamam ॥
And then, the heavily convulsing Laṅkā
addressed Hanumān, the Vānara,
in a humble and faltering voice:

த்ராயஸ்வ ஹரிஸத்தம ।
ஸமயே ஸௌம்ய திஷ்டந்தி

prasīda sumahābāhō
trāyasva harisattama ।
samayē saumya tiṣṭhanti
sattvavantō mahābalāḥ ॥
Have pity on me, O you of the mighty arm;
spare me, O great Vānara!
O gentle one! People of power and great strength
never cross the boundary, will they!

nirjitāhaṃ tvayā vīra
vikramēṇa mahābala ॥
I am truly none other than the City of Laṅkā!
I am defeated by your prowess,
O Veera of immense strength!

bruvantyā mē harīṡvara ।
svayaṃbhuvā purā dattam
varadānaṃ yathā mama ॥
O lord of Vānaras! Listen,
I will tell you what will happen
according to the boon given once upon a time
to me by (Brahma), the Self-Emergent:

விக்ரமாத்வஸமாநயேத் ।
ததா த்வயா ஹி விஜ்ஞேயம்

yadā tvāṃ vānaraḥ kaṡcit
vikramādvaṡamānayēt ।
tadā tvayā hi vijñēyam
rakṣasāṃ bhayamāgatam ॥
When a certain Vānara
subdues you by his prowess,
then you shall know that the time
has come for the Rākshasas to be worried.

ப்ராப்தோऽத்ய தவ தர்ஸநாத் ।
ஸ்வயம்பூ விஹித: ஸத்யோ

sa hi mē samayaḥ saumya
prāptō'dya tava darṡanāt ।
svayaṃbhū vihitaḥ satyō
na tasyāsti vyatikramaḥ ॥
That time has come, my dear,
with my seeing you today.
Whatever is laid down
by the Self-Emergent shall come true;
there is no getting away from it.

ராவணஸ்ய துராத்மந: ।
ரக்ஷஸாம் சைவ ஸர்வேஷாம்
விநாஸ: ஸமுபாகத: ॥
sītānimittaṃ rājñastu
rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ ।
rakṣasāṃ caiva sarvēṣām
vināṡaḥ samupāgataḥ ॥
The (time for the) destruction
of the evil-minded king Rāvaṇa
and of all the Rākshasas has come,
because of (the abduction of) Seetā.

5.3.50 ஈ தத்ப்ரவிஸ்ய ஹரிஸ்ரேஷ்ட
புரீம் ராவணபாலிதாம் ।
விதத்ஸ்வ ஸர்வகார்யாணி
யாநி யாநீஹ வாஞ்சஸி ॥
tatpraviṡya hariṡrēṣṭha
purīṃ rāvaṇapālitām ।
vidhatsva sarvakāryāṇi
yāni yānīha vāñchasi ॥
So, O great Vānara,
you may enter the city ruled by Rāvaṇa,
and do whatsoever you wish to do.

5.3.51 ஈ ப்ரவிஸ்ய ஸாபோபஹதாம் ஹரீஸ்வர
ஸுபாம் புரீம் ராக்ஷஸமுக்யபாலிதாம் ।
யத்ருச்சயா த்வம் ஜநகாத்மஜாம் ஸதீம்
விமார்க ஸர்வத்ர கதோ யதாஸுகம் ॥
praviṡya ṡāpōpahatāṃ harīṡvara
ṡubhāṃ purīṃ rākṣasamukhyapālitām ।
yadṛcchayā tvaṃ janakātmajāṃ satīṃ
vimārga sarvatra gatō yathāsukham ॥
O best of Vānaras! You may (now)
enter this beautiful city
ruled by the king of Rākshasas,
which is doomed by a curse,
and search comfortably and as you please
for the daughter of Janaka, a devoted wife.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே த்ருதீயஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
sundarakāṇḍē tṛtīyassargaḥ॥

in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
