Used by the Lord of the Rākshasas,
it resounded with the chatter of amorous birds,
fragrant with divine scents and
furnished with invaluable bed-spreads.

and lovely with the decoration of flowers,
it shone like a brindled cow.

It was divine, seeming to be capable of
removing one’s grief, giving peace to the mind,
enhancing the complexion of the body
and even granting opulence to one!

tadā rāvaṇapālitā ॥
Well managed by Rāvaṇa, it offered,
like a (doting) mother does,
five kinds of pleasures
that satisfy the five senses respectively.

‘This is like Swarga;
this is like the world of Dēvas!
This must be the city of Indra!
This must be a reward for ultimate Tapa!’

but also to the reflections of the gems
and equally to the radiance of Rāvaṇa.

that have lasted well into the late night.

large bed of lotuses where
the swans and bees had gone silent.

with their petals closed due to night-fall.

ambujānīva phullāni
prārthayanti punaḥ punaḥ ।
itivāmanyata ṡrīmān
upapattyā mahākapiḥ ।
mēnē hi guṇatastāni
samāni salilōdbhavaiḥ ॥
‘Surely the amorous bees would seek
these lotus faces again and again
mistaking them for real lotuses
that bloom on the water’
thought that blessed great Vānara,
with good reason, seeing them
lack no quality that the water borne ones have.

shone like the pleasant post-monsoon sky
embellished by the stars.

before their Puṇya was completely exhausted,
must have gathered here’ thought the Vānara.

shone like those of the most bright and splendid stars.

exquisite ornaments strewn hither and thither
while they played love sports and became drunk,
the women were now robbed of their senses by sleep.

Some had their waist strings tangled.
They lay like draught fillies
let loose to relax on the ground.

looked like forest creepers whose blooms
were trampled upon by the lord of tuskers.

glowing with the sheen of moonlight,
shining like sleeping swans.

ஸுஸுபே ராக்ஷஸாதிப: ।

தாராபிரபிஸம்வ்ருத: ॥
sa ca tābhiḥ parivṛtaḥ
ṡuṡubhē rākṣasādhipaḥ ।
yathā hyuḍupatiṡṡīmān
tārābhirabhisaṃvṛtaḥ ॥
Surrounded by them, the lord of Rākshasas
shone like the splendid moon surrounded by stars.

puṇyaṡēṣasamāvṛtāḥ ।
imāstāssaṅgatāḥ kṛtsnā
iti mēnē haristadā ॥
‘All the stars, that have fallen from the heavens
before their Puṇya was completely exhausted,
must have gathered here’ thought the Vānara.

tārāṇāmiva suvyaktam
mahatīnāṃ ṡubhārciṣām ।
prabhāvarṇaprasādāṡca
virējustatra yōṣitām ॥
The radiance, color and grace of those women
shone like those of the most bright and splendid stars.

prakīrṇavarabhūṣaṇāḥ ।
pānavyāyāmakālēṣu
nidrāpahṛtacētasaḥ ॥
With their big and plump garlands and
exquisite ornaments strewn hither and thither
while they played love sports and became drunk,
the women were now robbed of their senses by sleep.

kāṡcidudbhrāntanūpurā: ।
pārṡvē galitahārāṡca
kāṡcitparamayōṣitaḥ ॥
Some of those lovely women had their Tilaka smudged.
Some had their anklets displaced.
Some had their necklaces hanging to one side.

kāṡcidvisrastavāsasaḥ ।
vyāviddharaṡanādāmāḥ
kiṡōrya iva vāhitāḥ ॥
Some are wrapped in pearl necklaces.
Some had their clothes slipping off.
Some had their waist strings tangled.
They lay like draught fillies
let loose to relax on the ground.

vicchinnamṛditasrajaḥ ।
gajēndramṛditāḥ phullā
latā iva mahāvanē ॥
Others wearing splendid ear-pendants,
with their garlands torn and crushed,
looked like forest creepers whose blooms
were trampled upon by the lord of tuskers.

candrāṃṡukiraṇābhāṡca
hārāḥ kāsāṃcidutkaṭāḥ ।
haṃsā iva babhussuptāḥ
stanamadhyēṣu yōṣitām ॥
The necklaces worn by some
lay between their breasts,
glowing with the sheen of moonlight,
shining like sleeping swans.

காதம்பா இவ பக்ஷிண: ।
ஹேமஸூத்ராணி சாந்யாஸாம்

kādambā iva pakṣiṇaḥ ।
hēmasūtrāṇi cānyāsām
cakravākā ivābhavan ॥
The lazulite necklaces of some
looked like Kādamba birds
and the gold girdles of others
looked like Cakravāka birds.
