carried the smell of sweet wine with it to Rāvaṇa.

to be the face of Rāvaṇa.

That Vana of Rāvaṇa’s women,
as they lay with their beautiful arms interlocked
and their hair twined with each other’s,
looked like a Vana of creepers
that bloomed in full by the
touch of the month of spring,
with their masses of flowers
pressed against each other and
enmeshed into each other into a garland.

(have taken the opportunity to fearlessly)
stare at those women, each of whom
was splendid in her own way.

All those women, who came
from the families of royal sages,
Daityas, Gandharvas and Rākshasas,
had given themselves to him
out of infatuation for him. These Ṡlōkas, from 68 to 71, which are confusing and contradicting, do not seem to be authentic. Some translations do not carry them.

A few among those, the lustful,
however, came to him, consumed by infatuation.

for the Rakshasa King,
if Rāghava’s lawfully wedded wife

strīvanaṃ rāvaṇasya tat ॥
That Vana of Rāvaṇa’s women,
as they lay with their beautiful arms interlocked
and their hair twined with each other’s,
looked like a Vana of creepers
that bloomed in full by the
touch of the month of spring,
with their masses of flowers
pressed against each other and
enmeshed into each other into a garland.

Then, with those women in that state,
even those who knew them well
could not tell apart one’s ornament,
garment, garland or limb from the other’s.

With Rāvaṇa sound asleep,
the blazing golden lamps seemed to
(have taken the opportunity to fearlessly)
stare at those women, each of whom
was splendid in her own way.

rājarṣipitṛdaityānām
gandharvāṇāṃ ca yōṣitaḥ ।
rākṣasānāṃ ca yāḥ kanyāḥ
tasya kāmavaṡaṃ gatāḥ ॥
All those women, who came
from the families of royal sages,
Daityas, Gandharvas and Rākshasas,
had given themselves to him
out of infatuation for him. These Ṡlōkas, from 68 to 71, which are confusing and contradicting, do not seem to be authentic. Some translations do not carry them.

rāvaṇēna hṛtāḥ striyaḥ ।
samadā madanēnaiva
mōhitāḥ kāṡcidāgatāḥ ॥
Rāvaṇa, ever interested in a fight,
carried them all off by force.
A few among those, the lustful,
however, came to him, consumed by infatuation.

nādakṣiṇā nānupacārayuktā ।
bhāryābhavattasya na hīnasattvā
na cāpi kāntasya na kāmanīyā ॥
And no one had become his wife,
who was not high-born or lacked beauty,
who was not capable or was not well treated,
who was not energetic or was undesirable to a lover.

babhūva buddhistu harīṡvarasya
yadīdṛṡī rāghavadharmapatnī ।
imā yathā rākṣasarājabhāryāḥ
sujātamasyēti hi sādhubuddhēḥ ॥
Then that chief of Vānaras,
who would think no mean thought, told himself,
‘How nice it would have been
for the Rakshasa King,
if Rāghava’s lawfully wedded wife
also was like these wives!’

த்ருவம் விஸிஷ்டா குணதோ ஹி ஸீதா ।

punaṡca sō'cintayādārtarūpō
dhruvaṃ viṡiṣṭā guṇatō hi sītā ।
athāyamasyāṃ kṛtavānmahātmā
laṅkēṡvaraḥ kaṣṭamanāryakarma ॥
Then he felt very sad, thinking,
‘Seetā is certainly a woman
of extraordinary character.
What the mighty lord of Laṅkā has
done to her is ignoble! What a pity!’
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே நவமஸ்ஸர்க:॥
