With four golden lamps shining
on him from four sides,
his entire body was illuminated
like a cloud by the flashes of lightning.

as if it were her lover with whom
she was united after a long time.

was Mandōdari, (Rāvaṇa’s) beloved,
and empress of the inner apartments.

The son of Vāyu, of mighty arm,
seeing how well she was adorned
and how charming and youthful she looked,
concluded to himself that she must be Seetā.
The Vānara chief was filled with joy,
overtaken by immense happiness.

Then he became delirious. He kissed his tail.
He patted himself on his shoulders.
He indulged in antics and sang.
He moved about back and forth.
He climbed up the pillars and jumped down
true to his monkey nature.

rahaḥ priyatamaṃ gṛhya

Another, of lotus eyes, slept hugging a flute,
as if she fell asleep, caught in deep passion
with her dearest lover in a secret place.

Another, a highly skilled dancer,
took a seven stringed Veena
and fell asleep hugging it,
as she would with a lover.

Another, of golden complexion
and soft, plump and lovely limbs,
was sleeping, tightly hugging a Mṛdanga,
her eyelids closed under
the weight of intoxication.

Another, a flawless one with a slender waist,
exhausted with intoxication,
held the instrument Paṇava
under her arms to her side and fell asleep.

Another woman hugged the
instrument Ḍiṇḍima that was beside her
like she would her young son, and fell asleep.

Another woman of lotus eyes fell asleep

holding the instrument Āḍambara tightly in her arms.

Another woman who kicked a pitcher as she slept
looked like a multi-colored garland
that was sprinkled with water
in spring (to keep it fresh).

Another slender one was overpowered by sleep
and slept holding her breasts,
that were like pots made of gold, with her hands.

hugging another one of wide hips.

Thus the beautiful, impassioned women slept,
with the various instruments
which they had been playing
pressed to their breasts
as if they were their lovers.

Then the Vānara saw a woman,
of extraordinary beauty,
sleeping on a beautiful bedstead
that was set distinctly away from all others.

Her own innate radiance combined with the
dazzle of the ornaments studded with pearls and gems
with which she was well decorated,
seemed to brighten up that extraordinary apartment.

That woman, a charming beauty
of bright golden complexion,
whom that Vānara saw there sleeping
was Mandōdari, (Rāvaṇa’s) beloved,
and empress of the inner apartments.

நநந்த ஹரியூதப: ॥
sa tāṃ dṛṣṭvā mahābāhuḥ
bhūṣitāṃ mārutātmajaḥ ।
tarkayāmāsa sītēti
rūpayauvanasampadā ।
harṣēṇa mahatā yuktō
nananda hariyūthapaḥ ॥
The son of Vāyu, of mighty arm,
seeing how well she was adorned
and how charming and youthful she looked,
concluded to himself that she must be Seetā.
The Vānara chief was filled with joy,
overtaken by immense happiness.

நநந்த சிக்ரீட ஜகௌ ஜகாம ।

நிதர்ஸயந் ஸ்வாம் ப்ரக்ருதிம் கபீநாம் ॥
āsphōṭayāmāsa cucumba pucchaṃ
nananda cikrīḍa jagau jagāma ।
stambhānarōhannipapāta bhūmau
nidarṡayan svāṃ prakṛtiṃ kapīnām ॥
Then he became delirious. He kissed his tail.
He patted himself on his shoulders.
He indulged in antics and sang.
He moved about back and forth.
He climbed up the pillars and jumped down
true to his monkey nature.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே தஸமஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
